I recently was in need of a new bluetooth headset, the first one was far too loud on the receiving end up to the point that I was told to just go on mute on a conference call as others could not hear what I was saying at all. The first thing that I did, as often in testing, was to define what my desired end result was. For me what mattered most, above anything else, was the call quality on the receiving end. The other important factors were comfort, and a mute function (as my phone did not have one, and to mute with the conference call system, you had to press *1, something that is not easy while driving).

With the desired qualities in mind, I proceeded to do some research to try and figure out what device what meet my requirements. I found it was easy to narrow down the pool to a couple devices, the Jawbone Prime and the Plantronics Voyager Pro based mainly on editor and personal reviews. Both units were similarly priced, at the time the Jawbone prime was 120$ and the Plantronics Pro was 100$, so they were both upper end devices. This is where I ran into some difficulties; once I was down to the two devices, it was impossible to tell, from reading at least, which device would have the superior call quality. In words it is almost impossible to quantify call quality, often reviewers would say the quality was a four stars, or that it was better than its predecessor. I even found articles comparing the two devices, but I was surprised to discover none of them had any sound clips of what the receiving call sounded like. To me it seemed the only real way to get a feel for how good the call quality was.

This is when I decided move forward and do some testing of my own. I purchased both the Jawbone Prime and the Plantronics Voyager Pro headsets, and I then decided to leave myself a message on my phone, that way I could do a straight comparison of the receiving call quality. I actually ended up leaving messages twice for each device, as the first time I did not have a good idea of what I wanted to test, this was a good example of the importance of having various testing scenarios in mind. I wanted to hear the call quality in a variety of scenarios including, music playing, windows down, air conditioning pointed at face and different voice volume levels. (Unfortunately to hear the tests, you will need to actually download the .wav file, hopefully I can post them on another site that will stream them)

After listening to both clips it was clear that the Plantronics Voyager pro had superior receiving call quality. The Jawbone Prime, was almost perfect when I was not talking, but when I was the background noise started to leak through. Overall comfort was about equivalent for both devices, and the Plantronics Pro had mute functionality where as the Jawbone Prime does not.

I would therefore state that the Plantronics Voyager Pro is the superior device based on my criteria, but both devices performed quite well (especially in comparison to some of the cheaper products). I have had the voyager pro for about 4 months now, and it has continued to perform well. To tie this back to testing, it was interesting because I got to test a product in a non traditional manner and in a realistic setting as a customer. It also reinforced the importance of knowing the needs of the customer when testing, because had my criteria been different a different headset could have come out on top.

Как и обещал пишу что же кривого в SL375 с Bluetooth.
И так по порядку.
Сопряжение гарнитуры MHB-301 (InterStep) прошло нормально. Но вот что открылось, несмотря на то что кнопка на гарнитуре должна набирать предыдущий номер или поднять трубку одним нажатием, в реальности надо нажимать 4! и 2! раза. Инженеры накосячили по полной программе! Оказаывается когда нажимаешь кнопку на телефон посылается сигнал, по-хорошему телефон сразу должен набирать предыдущий номер. Но нет! Ничего не происходит, или почти ничего, но в гарнитуре раздаётся мелодия входящего звонка! Вы нажимаете кнопку гарнитуры (2-ой раз), и, о чудо!, на экране появляется последний набранный номер, но не набирается Дальше интереснее! Нажимаем кнопку 3-й раз, и… ничего не происходит но в динамике гарнитуры раздаётся мелодия входящего звонка. Ну конечно же надо нажать кнопку в 4-й раз, что бы принять этот эффемерный звонок, тут-то и случается то самое чудо — телефон начинает набирать номер за что ему и спасибо! Неправда-ли, весьма своеобразная трактовка сигнала “повторить звонок” инженерами Gigaset? Дальше интереснее хотите вы просто поднять трубку перевести гудок на гарнитуру и набрать номер, давайте попробуем: держим зеленую кнопку на телефоне пока не раздасться гудок, нажимаем кнопку гарнитуры… Да-да-да и тут в гарнитуре раздаётся знакомая мелодия вызова — нажимает кнопку еще раз и получаем гудок в гарнитуре, уф… можно набирать номер.
Вы скажите а может надо было двойным нажатием поднимать трубку и т.п. … Да нет, именно так как я описал — а двойное нажатие в гарнитуре означает голосовой вызов и так как его в телефоне нет то это ни к чему хорошему не приведёт!
Но всё это я узнал после того как разгадал загадку подключения гарнитуры Plantronics Voyager 855 к этой трубке. Поиск устройств, PIN 0000, всё по класике, но ерунда получается телефон никак не реагирует на нажатия кнопок на гарнитуре, хотя оба демонстрируют, что они подключены. Долго мучался, но в конце концов позвонил с мобильного на DECT — ответил на звонок одним нажатием на кнопку и всё… после этого телефон стал реагировать на гарнитуру таким образом как описано сверху…
А так как я сначала подключил 855-ую к SL375, то разгадка этой серии косяков напомнила мне белый и черный криптексы из “Кода да Винчи”, кто тут накосячил Plantronics или Siemens даже затрудняюсь ответить.
XXI век и устройства одаривают нас всё новыми косяками и гораздо более косякастыми косяками…

I’ve owned the Netgear SPH200D phone and use it primarily as a regular phone.  My Skype usage is very low but when I do Skype, this phone works well.  For my purposes the phone is great but this is not a review about it’s functionality or anything like that.

This is simply a small reference for those interested in connecting a compatible headset.  According to the Netgear Support Forums, there is only 1 confirmed 2.5mm headset that is reported as compatible:  The original Xbox game console headset.

I can also confirm personally that the Plantronics X30 Xbox 360 Headset works with the SPH200D.

Viel Zeit ist ins Land gestrichen seit meinem letzten Post und ebenso viel hat sich verändert (daher auch das herumtümpeln des Blogs…leider:().

Mittlerweile hab ich meinen Präsenzdienst abgeschlossen, bin Student der Wirtschaftsinformatik (mit anfänglichen Problemen beim inskribieren) und steh nun endlich vor der praktischen Fahrprüfung (nach fast einem Jahr, da mir einfach die Zeit&Motivation gefehlt hat).

Auch auf der technischen Seite hat sich einiges getan; Snow Leopard has arrived, mein neues Lieblingsgadget ist mittlerweile das Plantronics Discovry 925 Bluetooth Headset und noch so manche Spielerei und Software mehr…

Meine Musikalische Seite (auch wenn im Moment nur passiv ) hat sich ebenfalls austoben können mit den Releases (und lang geplanten Anschaffungen) der letzten zwei Monaten.
