Even before their “official” team takes over the book, James Robinson and Mark Bagley are having some fun with the remnants of the previous team in this Blackest Night crossover. The rag-tag team, including Vixen, Gypsy, Dr. Light,Zatanna, Red Tornado, and Plastic Man, stand in the broken husk of the Hall of Justice, where the Black Lantern corpses of many of their enemies have recently arisen. It’s not just the enemies they’ll need to deal with — Gypsy and Vixen find themselves facing their late teammate Vibe, Zatanna confronts the soulless corpse of her own father, and Dr. Light seeks out the villain whose name she has been trying to redeem for years.

As always, Robinson’s grasp of character is impeccable. He puts these heroes through real Hell, and they’ve started from a pretty nasty place to begin with. The duel between Zatanna and Zatara is epic, exciting stuff. Zee already had to watch her own father’s soul destroyed in the Reign in Hell series — fighting his body, battling him spell for spell… it’s wonderful. We also get some really good stuff here with Dr. Light. In fact, Robinson in general has become quite the champion of that character, both here and in Superman.

Bagley isn’t just one of the top artists in the business because he’s consistent. He’s also good. The women especially look good here, and the slowly-melting Plastic Man looks like he’s in major agony. Bad for Plas, of course, but it’s impressive in the terms of the artwork.

This story tales place after Robinson’s Cry For Justice miniseries which — as of this writing — still has two issues to go. But between that title and this one, I’m more than satisfied that the book is going to be in very good hands.

Rating: 8/10

With four Blackest Night-related issues out this week, including Blackest Night No. 5, there was much to read, re-read and digest.

After reading Green Lantern No. 48 and Blackest Night No. 5, all I can say is, “Wow.” This stuff just keeps getting better and better every month.

Also out this week were Teen Titans No. 77 (Blackest Night) and Justice League of America No. 39 (Blackest Night), which are interesting diversions, but pale in comparison to the main event and the two Green Lantern books.

Nevertheless, here are some random observations:

Larfleeze is hilarious, and when compared to the unfettered seriousness and rage of Atrocitus, it’s a winning combination. They deserve their own story arc as some buddy team-up or something.

Before Atrocitus got to Okaara, what happened with the Lost Lanterns on Ysmault? And how exactly did Atrocitus get to Okaara? Can he just teleport anywhere? And what happened to the other Red Lanterns? Did he just leave them to run wild on Ysmault or does he have a second in command? Maybe Dex Starr?

Yeah, it’s been said over and over, but, damn, Carol Ferris looks good in violet.

Blue Lantern…Atrocitus? Wow.

By the way, I never thought I’d see the moment when Atrocitus and Saint Walker would have a Hallmark moment. Seriously, I felt bad for the big red guy.

So, Indigo-1 keeps blabbing about Abin Sur, now referring to him as her savior. Makes you wonder what Abin Sur’s connection to Indigo-1 is all about and why Abin Sur is clearly mentioned among all that gobbledygook that is supposed to be the Indigo Tribe oath.

No surprise here…Hal Jordan says, “SCREW YOU” to working for the Guardians again, which gets a rise out of Thaal Sinestro (I wonder if you pronounce that like “Hal”). Now, if only Hal can stay alive to tell them that…

Now, I’ve seen it all…a cholo Black Lantern. Paco Ramone, holmes!

Awww…Plastic Man.

Teen Titans No. 77 (Blackest Night)? Shoulda just called it Deathstroke (Blackest Night). It was all about Slade’s family reunion, which makes you wonder what other plot got scrapped before they went with this one.

So, with their powers combined, the Lanterns summon Captain–wait…Batman? What the Hell? Totally unexpected. So, if their powers combined just made things worse…what now?

As if things weren’t difficult enough, Nekron pulls at bat out of his sleeve and turns Superman, Wonder Woman, Conner Kent, Green Arrow, Kid Flash, Donna Troy, Ice and Animal Man into Black Lanterns, with Hal and Barry Allen about to join the party, as well.

Guy Gardner won’t be happy that Nekron messed with his girl.

Well, at least Scar is gone. What an annoying and detestable character. So, what becomes of “The Book of the Black?” Is Lyssa Drak still stuck in there?

At this point, it looks like nothing can stop Nekron.

As it turns out, Bizarro is much more interesting in Black Lantern emotional spectrum vision then he is without it. Haha. I like that he said he was full of rage when the Black Lantern saw love. Nice use of the opposite speech and twisting it to fit Blackest Night perfectly. It was also great to see Frankenstein and the Bride. This was good but a little rushed. It was a quick read.

5/5

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #19

(Marvel Comics)

Was schwerer wiegt ist, dass ihn erneut viele H.A.M.M.E.R.

2/5

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #38

(DC Comics)

4/5

THUNDERBOLTS

(Marvel Comics)

by James Robinson (writer), Mark Bagley (pencils), Rob Hunter (inks), Pete Pantazis (colors), and Rob Leigh (letters)

The Story: Someone dies, the remnants of the JLA discuss their future, and Despero attacks.

What’s Good: Even though it’s the death of an absolute z-lister, I really did like the opening scene this month. In providing a massive, faceless new enemy, it delivered that sense of foreboding danger that should be in the opening issue of any writer’s run. It felt meaningful and intense and promised good stuff to come.

Robinson also writes a powerful and likable Zatanna and her presence is probably the high point of the issue. She’s just a lot of fun, light-hearted but also the undeniable heavy of the team at the moment. Robinson also does a good job on approaching Plas’ current predicament, including referencing his agelessness, limitations, and Plas’ own frustrations when he’s unable to act upon his creativity.

On art, Mark Bagley’s work is superb. This is basically the standard for the “modern DC superhero” look, and what better place for that than the JLA comic? It’s a bright, colorful, and pleasing comic full of youth, energy, and vitality. Bagley was definitely the right man for the job.

What’s Not So Good: Despite all this, this comic is something of a disaster zone. It’s not the fault of Bagley or Robinson, who outside of one atrocious punch-line by Despero, acquit themselves admirably. Rather, this is a case of “wrong place, wrong time.”

The problem is that Robinson and Bagley are being thrown into a company-wide event before even managing to get through one issue. As a result, Robinson has far too much on his plate: the aftermath of Cry for Justice, McDuffie’s baggage, and leading in to a Blackest Night tie-in.

That said, his hands are also tied. Given that the Blackest Night tie-in will run for two months, his run won’t really start until January. As a result, he can’t fully introduce a new enemy. He can’t start his first arc. He can’t even introduce his JLA roster. He’s forced to give us 22 pages of chaos and water treading.

We get an utterly pointless and horribly familiar conversation about whether the JLA has a future or not. It’s one we’ve heard a million times and it’s without any real emotional impact or distinct flavor. It’s just the same tired material without nuance. It’s also more or less without consequence. Nothing changes and nothing is revealed thanks to the conversation. It’s just there to fill pages. Then we get a random, and I mean random attack by freaking Despero of all people. Huh? Where in the heck did that come from? Despero’s reasons are never explained and even if they were, it’d still be random. You can’t have a guy like Despero launch a surprise attack out of the blue with zero build-up.

Then BAM! Blackest Night image of a zombie floating in the air!

Conclusion: This is a bad comic that still has hope for its run, given that none of it is Bagley or Robinson’s fault.

Grade: C -

Justice League of America #38
Written by James Robinson
Art by Mark Bagley

Holy shit! This must be the most underrated comic of the fucking year. After reading all of the horrible reviews and the abysmal so far Cry for Justice mini, I actually enjoyed this a lot. That’s a good thing – because this book has been bad for a really long time. Bagley can certainly draw better then any artist this book has had and Robinson’s dialogue is much better then it has been over in Cry for Justice. I liked it. Sure, Blue Jay dying was stupid and we don’t need another superhero dying but forget that, I liked the moments in the cave and all of the talking about its history and even Young Justice. It’s too bad Plas is going to stay on the team because he is always fun. The fight with Despero was even exciting because Bagley is an artist who makes it easy to see what is going on. Forget what you have heard, I think this is a good start to the Robinson – Bagley run.

Warming up helps your body prepare itself for training both mentally and physically, and reduces the chance of injury. The aims of stretching are to gently lengthen muscles before and after any form of exercise, and to improve tissue elasticity / flexibility. If done correctly, stretching will help prevent injuries and increase athletic performance.

Enjoy this 8 key steps !
_Begin with gradual mobility exercises of all the joints (natural lubrification with synovial fluid).
_Warm up the body prior to stretching (increases blood flow and makes the muscles more supple).
_Slowly bring your heart rate down before you begin stretching (take your time bro).
_Ok, start with your legs, and work up the body, in order not to miss out any of the stretches.
_Feel some slight discomfort, if you don’t feel anything, then you may be doing the stretch incorrectly.
_Hold each stretch for a minimum of 15 seconds.
_Breathing slowly, regulary and rhythmically (do not hold your breath tomato head).
_Stop immediately if you feel any severe pain, Plastic Man.

Mission : 10 minutes for warm-up and 20 minutes for stretching.
Yes brother ! 30 minutes to be ready.
During cold weather make sure you spend more time warming up.

Perform this sequence of stretches only after you have warmed up the muscles.

Justice League of America #37
Written by Len Wein
Art by Tom Derenick

This issue concludes Len Wein’s fill-in arc and I must say that it was a sucess. Wein utilized each of the powers of the team members in unique ways and gave them all equal screen time. That is much better then McDuffie or Meltzer ever did on this book. I wonder where this story is going to continue? Under Robinson’s pen? I don’t know because there was definitely a cliffhanger about the Key and a possible murder of Professor Fortune. But anyways, this was a good arc and Wein should be proud of it.

Royal Pain!

Chapter 3: Dead Man’s Hand

DC Comics

JLA RED
Over at Drawingboard.org the theme for this month’s superhero JAM is Red. A while back I did JLA team BLACK with Batman, Black Lighting, Black Canary, Phantom Stranger, and the Resurrection Man. The plan was to do a team Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange and Red. Well I’ve done the red team now and I have no plans to do the others at this point but it was quick fun to pull this team together. I wanted to do it quickly so i went the cartoony route with them. For those that don’t know, they are Adam Strange, the Flash, Red Tornado, Deadman, Plastic Man and Shazam the Justice League of America team RED!

I turn my back on a woman for 50 years, and this is what happens. Veronica Lodge has agreed to marry Archie Andrews. I will admit that Archie has aged a lot better than I have, although he’s 10 months older, but I still consider this the height of perfidy.

The news has been out for a long time, but the comic book containing the engagement story arrived on news stands today — or so I’m told. I didn’t have the heart to look.

Meanwhile, the news today that Disney is going to buy Marvel Entertainment — Spider Man, Captain America and all — got me to thinking about the other comics I read, when I wasn’t fawning over Veronica.

My pantheon was Plastic Man, Blackhawk, the Green Lantern, Superman and Batman. Plastic Man had one of the most complicated personal histories of any comicbook hero. I don’t want to go into it here (I do have to teach the first class of the semester tomorrow morning) but one aspect of it is reminiscent of the Toxic Avenger, now an off-Broadway attraction, thanks to the George Street Playhouse. Toxie, to his intimates, was a nerd who was thrown into a vat of toxic chemical waste that turned him into a superhuman mutant. Plastic Man was an underworld figure who was accidentally sprayed with a chemical that made his body so flexible that he could bend himself into any shape, though he retained the red color and black-and-yellow stripes of his body suit. I remember him, for instance, disguising himself as an icicle, but even as a kid I didn’t understand why his pursuers couldn’t spot an icicle with that color scheme.

I don’t know whether this Disney transaction is good or bad, but I did read an analysis of the financial aspects of the engagement of Archie and Veronica. Roma Luciw, writing in The Globe and Mail, examined whether a couple with such disparate underpinnings — a wealthy she and a middle-class he — should enter into a prenuptial agreement. You can read what the experts think at this link:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-investor/personal-finance/do-archie-and-veronica-need-a-pre-nup/article1267701/

Wow…so this week has been weird huh?
It’s been killing me that things have changed suddenly here at the Watchtower… there’s nothing worse than have an awkward work environment.

We both know why, maybe it’s an embarrassment thing, or an ego thing, but I guess we just been trying to ignore the obvious.
Truth be told, I miss you. A lot! I miss my friend first and foremost.

Even Super Girl and Black Canary have been asking me what’s happened. So it’s become something that people have noticed – which I know you hate, because you just want to go about your daily tasks of helping the humans on earth, and not draw dagger stares from those in the league who like to toot my horn.

I blame myself for this situation.

Gotta be honest here Hawks, I really think I messed things up for myself, and I’m worried it’s beyond repair.

I have issues around women…especially those who…ok well; let me rather start at the beginning.

I’ll never forget that day some 2 and half years ago…we were both fairly new to the Justice League, and you were sent down from your planet for one of Batman’s dreaded debriefings (sometimes they come across as damn sales meetings). I was asked to sit in to see how it all works…and there I noticed you sitting next to Power Girl… you were wearing an animal print outfit and a yellow utility belt, that’s when everything became slow motion and I just melted.

Then you went back to Thanagar. And I was left to go on with my life…I didn’t think we’d ever work an assignment together.

The boys here at the Watchtower mocked me about my crush on you…but it was never an issue really…how could it be right? Id only seen you once.

Over the years we became interplanetary email buddies, you on Thanagar and me here on Earth.

Then I overheard Batman and the Man of Steel talking about how your powers would be a great asset here on Earth.

You and I both bonded over this news. I felt an excitement in me, (which can be embarrassing considering my limbs can stretch at will!)

The thought of seeing you every day and getting to know you on another level, man alive…the Gods were on my side for a change.

I remember the “seek and observe” assignment we were both given back in April, you remember when we thought Animal Man had switched sides and was working for the Injustice League??

Man the guy may have issues, but he’s on our side. And I know you had a thing with him back in the day…so I ended up being jealous, and couldn’t wait to expose him as a traitor. ( but deep down it was about making you happy that weekend)

When you finally got reassigned to Earth a few months ago, I was like a schoolboy again (see I previously had a thing for Catwoman, and while nothing happened, it was so draining, that I had become a bit cold to the *ahem* opposite sex).

We got along so well you and I.
Our private jokes about the other superheroes who thought their powers were better than ours…good times!

I knew something was changing however.
I tried to avoid it, nay stop it… I really did.
There was no denying it, and despite warnings (some out of concern, others out of jealousy), I began to fall for you.

I didn’t want that to happen, because hey, lets be honest here, Guys like me…they don’t get girls like you.

Last week of course we had our Super Villain seminar that The Flash put together in an attempt to get us all on the same page – Lord knows crime fighting has changed.

We spent so much time together, there was a definite awkwardness I could feel coming from you… I knew something was up. But then on Day 2 of the Super Villain seminar, all my fears were realized. When you were so close to me, and I looked into your eyes, I knew that was it for me.

That was the exact moment I fell in love with you.

When I watched the surveillance video of the seminar, I realized how absolutely perfect you were….and how flawed I was. Confidence plummeted. (yes despite you saying you can’t fit into your cape and tights some days, to me, I had never seen someone so beautiful).

Then earlier this week I heard you were going to see Animal Man again at the annual Superhero Convention…I panicked, what if he was setting you up…No…this couldn’t happen. You deserved better!

I tried to warn you against him and ended up coming across as a jealous A-hole. Then in a passing comment you said something which shattered me completely – you were seeing Aquaman.

The world stopped…I didn’t even notice the attack by Starro on the Australian Reef…I was numb.

Being the guy who is always funny and keeping others entertained comes with a price behind the scenes. There is no place for personal hurt.

Plus as you know Wonder Women was leaving the Justice League this week, and she’s one of my dearest friends. I felt like I was about to lose everything in the space of a few days. I began to swing emotionally.

I closed up….and I’m hurting so badly because of my own silly heart and I know it’s not because of you’re actiona, you’re just living your life , and I don’t begrudge you at all…Aquaman is an awesome guy, and if he makes you happy… I really am happy for you. I did have a feeling your mates Red Tornado & Red Tornado II were trying to set you up with someone…but I didn’t think it would be Aquaman!

Deep down I know all the nice moments we shared, the little things like the ice coffee while we checked out super villains personal files, the stealing of Martian Manhunter’s candy coated sweets when we had a craving, and the gifts we gave each other, they were all just done because you are a genuinely nice person.

I’d never had that sorta attention before… I mistook it as the “signs” Green Arrow always talks about which women supposedly give us guys.

Hawkgirl – these last few days we have hardly said a word to each other and it’s killed me. You don’t visit, you don’t look me in the eye, and you don’t email me random things like we ALWAYS do…

So I’m writing you this letter…I don’t even know if you will read it…

What I do know is you don’t know how to react to me, and I don’t know what else to do.

All I can say is that I will lock away my feelings for you, I just want to be your friend again, your happiness is so important to me, and I don’t want to be the cause of any sorta tension here at the Watchtower, Bats would have my ass if I missed another invasion.

If you read this…and you want to talk. Please message me. You know where to find me. If you don’t…I guess I’ll just go on hiding in the men’s locker room every time you come past.

I joke, I joke.
The fate of the known world depends on us.

Yours always
Plastic Man

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #36

Royal Pain!, Chapter 2

Shuffel up and die!

DC Comics

4/5

The Comic Book Database, a great resource site, has a cool new feature where you can search comic books by cover date. So, naturally I had to search for comics dated for my birth month and year: February, 1976. Play along at home!

Look out! That Assassin guy is right behind you doing exactly what you thought was impossible!

I can’t imagine it gets much awesomer than this British comic. I wish I was as tough as your boots. (Wait, did you say “Actual size”?!)

I’m not sure what’s more shocking. The Jaws double’s terribly chapped lips? Or Ghost Rider’s flaming skull and the ocean ignoring each other.

OK, I’m detecting a certain aquatic theme, possibly inspired by a certain pop culture-defining film (see: coat tail riders).

Well certainly Batman is too cool to be that lame.

Oh Batman. Really? The Olympics? Sigh…

Surely Marvel is above this kind of cheap pandering.

What in the — ?!

OK, why is Spider-Man dragging a poor innocent girl into this implausibly ridiculous yet dangerous game? Unless the little girl is subbing for the football in this demented version of Not-Soccer. You’d think something this EXTREME would bring in at least a few spectators but it looks like they couldn’t give tickets away to this game.

Later: “Eh, let’s go back to playing regular football.”

So, was it possibly football season when this issue came out?

Oh-ho! It’s funny because it’s sexist!

Oh ho! It’s funny because they have eating disorders.

Come on Captain America, help me out.

Watch out for the phallic-helmeted Trojan Horde! Let’s face it, no one can resist cataclysmic Kirby action.

To be fair, this was from a time when superheroes had to announce their ethnicity in their name. But only if they weren’t white.

Oh. My. God. I have no idea what’s happening or why, but I must have this.

If this issue doesn’t include lyrics and sheet music, I’m writing an angry letter.

Watch the hands, pal.

I understand this was the inspiration for Bill Murray’s Scrooged.

Don’t… look… behind… you. You might need more American flags printed on large sheets of cardboard paper.

Wow, this is crazy!

I think we all see what’s coming.

Dodging is so WILD!

What jerks. Worst friends ever.

Every twin I know has this exact same problem.

Stay back! It looks like someone might actually read this. We don’t stand a chance!

I love it!

This would never get published today. For several reasons.

So… Spider-Man and Storm (from the X-Men) are now thieves who steal from helpless old men? Uh… great.

And finally…

But.. but… I thought they were the same person! OK I admit it. I’m actually intrigued.

And that’s my birth month in comics! Here’s the full list, if you haven’t had enough.

(One thing to note that you may have noticed: Comics have traditionally been dated about 2-3 months in advance of their actual release date in an attempt to lengthen their shelf life, so most of these had probably been released in November or December, 1975. Still, it’s much easier go by cover date than try to determine when each individual comic actually hit stands.)

Okay it took them thirty-six issues, but I think finally we have a Justice League issue where the characters are given equal screen time, have unique voices, and well…it just feels like the League. I think I was too easy on McDuffie, sure he was always being overly managed by DC editorial, but he really wasn’t good at writing this book. This was just a sigh of relief. I love having Plastic Man back. I really missed him. I liked how they actually showed Vixen asking Starfire to join the league. Heck I even liked the origin of the Royal Flush Gang that they recapped. When Robinson comes on this book, this book better stay this good.

Justice League of America #35
Written by Len Wein
Art by Tom Derenick and Pow Rodrix

What Professor Fortune said in the last line of this book about playing with the cards you are dealt – in other words you don’t need the big three, just create good stories about the characters you have – it could have been said to McDuffie. Heck, Wein makes Red Tornado more interesting with the two lines the character had her then anything Meltzer or McDuffie did with the character. This was a decent issue, I mean it wasn’t great but it had Plastic Man in it, so that elevates it quite a bit in my head. I love how Plas brought up how he was with the team through all those great storylines – that was a great use of continuity while at the same time commenting on how ridiculous that he has been out of the League for so long. Sure we don’t have the A-list big leaguers, but this fill-in arc is going to be a decent read none-the-less.

In the three-part Justice League of America story by veteran writer Len Wein, the Royal Flush Gang attacks a casino in Las Vegas. They demand that they receive $25 million from every casino on the Strip, or they’ll kill their hostages. Vixen calls the JLA members to a meeting, but with membership so low anyway, the only other person who shows up is Firestorm. They head out to deal with the problem and meet up with Dr. Light and Red Tornado on the scene. Plastic Man also appears to lend a hand. They deal with the Royal Flush Gang, though we find out that the Gang’s real intention was to steal the casino’s special nanotechnology for some nefarious plot. We find out that the Gang’s founder, Amos Fortune, is behind the heist, and he is waging a betting battle against Roulette, who is represented by the JLA. Each of them is using their proxies in a game, the purpose of which is not yet known.

Unlike Teen Titans, whose current three-part arc with a fill-in writer is actually meaningful, this one is not. It’s a cute story that seems to largely prove just how undermanned the JLA is. Vixen is basically the leader because she’s the person who has been in the JLA longest. Well, aside from Red Tornado, but since he’s not really there in a permanent capacity, he may feel that Vixen is better suited to lead. Or maybe not. Maybe I’m reading too much into it. I do like to see Dr. Light bicker with another person, but Len Wein’s antiquated writing style is very obvious. He does a much better job with this issue than his fill-in issue about Starbreaker, but every so often, someone says something that’s just… off. Like no one says that anymore. The plot’s decent enough, though, and Tom Derenick’s art is actually pretty good. Maybe his Reign in Hell work was just not representative of what he can do. Or maybe it’s the inker or the colorist. At any rate, this is decent filler. It’s sufficiently entertaining, even if I am excited to see what James Robinson will do with the JLA in a few months.

Plot: 7.4 Art: 8.0 Dialogue: 6.4 Overall: 7.2

Royal Pain!, Chapter One: Luck Of The Draw

DC Comics
