Why did she not feel beautiful enough? She was young, she left behind a husband and eight year old twins.

Beauty queen and Miss Argentina 1994, Solange Magnano, died on Sunday as a result of complications from elective gluteoplasty, commonly known as a “butt lift.” Although authorities are still investigating the cause of death, Solange’s friend Roberto Piazza said that liquid injected for Thursday’s surgery “went to her lungs and brain,” causing respiratory failure.

I got a book that is a classic artist’s tool– the photos of Edweard Muybridge.
In the late 1800’s Muybridge used the new technology of photograpy in ingenious ways creating images of animals and people in motion. His work is still used today. His photos of the human body in motion show models, male and female, in ordinary daily actions–walking, running, climbing stairs. The models are naked.

They are all young and fit. They lived in times when people were active by necessity and ate all natural because that’s all they had. They are beautiful pictures.

The men have a timeless look. The women, by fashion standards, are all defective in some way. Stomachs are not totally flat, breasts are not augmented. In fact, they are normal women who have not surgically altered themselves. When they wanted a slim waist, they would have worn a corset. Women back then didn’t shave off their body hair. They kept their clothes on, except in the cause of art and science, or in privacy.

Generally, it’s alright for men to be men. Women have to try to be this year’s model. Most of us don’t put our lives at risk for the sake of perfection. Most of us recognize that perfection is never attainable. Tragically, some women have died trying to be beautiful enough.

The world revolves around commerce, and commerce depends on need. Create a need when one doesn’t exist. If women generally felt beautiful enough, surgeons would have to make a living curing diseases. And with all that extra time and mental energy, women might get up to something.

For those that wanted to  stick with non-invasive procedures, Botox and other injectables were available for 50% off the usual treatment price.

Surgeons have been looking for several innovative ways to attract more patients this year, especially since the economic downturn resulted in tighter consumer wallets and a steady decline of ‘luxury expenses’ such as plastic and cosmetic surgery. Doctors have been rolling out discounts, coupons, free treatment incentives and their own patient financing plans so that prospective patients can still consider surgery or a cosmetic enhancement procedure.

Americans spent nearly $12 billion on cosmetic procedures last year, and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has yet to unveil the numbers for the 2009 year.

Still, the American Society of Plastic Surgery warns that patients need to keep an eye on surgeons offering drastic deals and discounts to ensure that the practice is licensed to perform the procedures, and that the doctor has enough experience to administer the treatment or perform the procedure with minimal risks. Doing research about the practice, setting up an in-person consultation and learning about all the risks and benefits associated with the surgery or treatment is still important, regardless of the offer.

“I wonder if we haven’t entered into a period of what should be called “adjustment” feminism. The women’s movement is having to adjust to the realities of life in our culture, where many of its basic goals — including the very basic liberation of women from their pop culture status as a “mindless-boob-girlie symbol,” to borrow a phrase again from Robin Morgan — have stalled or are even backsliding. This week, for example, not only brought a public statement by the head of NOW acknowledging that the fight to have women valued for their inner beauty is essentially a wash; it also found NOW in the very bizarre position of urging senators to preserve the dictates of the Hyde Amendment, which for over 30 years has guaranteed that Medicaid funds would not be used to pay for most abortions for poor women. The House of Representatives’ recently-passed the Stupak amendment, which effectively prohibits both private health insurance plans participating in the future-envisioned insurance “exchange” and whatever public option may come into being, from offering abortion coverage to any woman, and the Stupak-like proposals currently circulating in the Senate are so much worse, after all. Hyde suddenly seems bearable.”

It’s a conundrum I’ve pondered many times, most recently in Volume 3 of my series entitled Musings On Science, The Human Body, And the Failures Contained Therein Which I Have Seen At The Shopping Mall:

Since half of cosmetic surgery is taking stuff out of people, and the other half is putting stuff into people, shouldn’t we just put the stuff we take out of some parts into other parts?

According to the New York Times, the medical community is finally thinking along those same lines:

THE latest kind of recycling has nothing to do with soda bottles. It entails liposuctioning fat from, say, thighs or buttocks and injecting it into breasts to augment them. After being condemned in the early ’90s, this procedure is generating newfound excitement among the handful of doctors nationwide who offer it and patients keen to enlarge their breasts without resorting to implants.

The practice was condemned because doctors worried that injecting fat into peoples’ boobies would hamper mammograms. But since our communist death panel librul mooozlim president says women shouldn’t get those anymore, it’s time to reconsider. Or something:

But this year, the plastic surgery society reversed its former position. A report from its task force reviewed the limited research on fat grafting to the breast and concluded that it “can be considered a safe method of augmentation.” On the issue of mammography, the report said fat grafting “could potentially interfere with breast cancer detection; however no evidence was found that strongly suggests this interference.” Thus, the task force’s statement turned a red stoplight into a yellow one, signaling to plastic surgeons: Proceed with caution.

I know there are a lot of people out there who look down on those who opt for cosmetic procedures, and I think that’s pretty sad. On the other hand, this new “relocation” technique could make it a lot more difficult to tell who has been enhanced and who hasn’t. I think you should be required to disclose whether you’ve had this particular procedure done. That way your office mates can make up funny nicknames for you, like “Ol’ Butt Tits” and “Belly Boobs.” Look, I never said your office mates were funny. Jeez, get a new job already.

Jah, verevarustust parandab, ja mingiks hetkeks tunduvad rinnad suuremad ka, samuti toimib ka rindade pidev mudimine. Pusivat moju aga ei ole. Ja rinnad, mis enne ilukirurgi abi ei vajanuks, voivad nuud tostmist ja kohendamist vajada. Juba aastal ? moisteti peale petta saanud naise kaebust USA Iowa osariigis uks selliseid pumpasid muuv muugimees suudi, keelati tal osariigis tegutsemine ja moisteti valja kokku 90000 dollariline valuraha. Lynn Curtain, one of the real housewives of Orange County, has recently undergone a facelift to get rid of the wrinkles and fine lines around her eyes and mouth.

The 52-year old star has admitted to getting fillers to smooth out the signs of aging, and some speculate that the mom of two teenage daughters has also had breast implants. Despite her otherwise slim and toned physique, her neck and forehead previously gave away her age. The star admitted that she had undergone this procedure to Star Magazine later last month.
