The best children’s gardens are those that have the play areas integrated into the larger garden, as well as providing hiding places for kids (that you can still see, of course). Try making a teepee out of long poles and twine that can then be covered by climbing plants. Or you could create a “room” by planting a circle of plants of flowers with an opening in the middle. Some child sized furniture in the middle will really top it off.

Kids love to use the garden so don’t make it difficult for them to do so. Place a container outside that can hold all of their toys such as skipping ropes, balls, and sports equipment. A well-maintained lawn is a must and an area of the garden that the kids will always use. this could be for simple “chasey” type games or for games of soccer, football, cricket, etc.

More often than not, kids actually tell their parents what’s happening in their lives with this. They sometimes want to tell stories to their parents about what’s been going on but the parents also don’t seem to want to listen. Most Potentially Implementable Design

We would like to extend our congratulations to the winners and finalists of the YP Design Challenge – Portable Playground category!

Last December 5, 2008, the jury panel for Portable Playground selected six (6) finalists from twenty-five (25) eligible submissions and awarded three (3) Jury Awards. Arch/EnP. Faith Varona of TAO-Pilipinas, architect and animator / film director Ellen Ramos, and artist-designer Robert Alejandro composed the jury.

Here is one of the Jury Winners, submitted by the team composed of Ana Marie P. Abrilla, Annelyn B. Lacson, and Lea Constantina S. Cruz, all 5th year BS Architecture students, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM).

Redmond, WA’s Grasslawn Park Re-do

I am sure you’ve noticed some construction activity at Grasslawn Park along 140th Ave NE. Grasslawn Park is one of the gems of Redmond. It has some gorgeous park facilities. From a wonderful gazebo,

to beautiful soccer and

baseball fields,

and to play equipment and more!

I contacted the city to get the full scoop. This is the third phase of the park “remodel”. Redmond is doing a number of upgrades to an already great park and incorporating some “green” eco-friendly elements as well.

This is what’s happening:

• A neighborhood gathering structure is being built with the all important bathrooms.  There will be a covered heated area for outdoor seating.
• New playground and equipment, complete with a “splash” feature.
• A resurfaced basketball court.
• A area of boulders with climbing features.
• More parking.
• New landscaping with environmentally sensitive rain gardens.
• A new maintenance building which will have a green roof, a roof that will have vegetation growing on it!

Here’s looking forward to spring to use the new and improved park facilities.
