Es war wieder einmal Zeit für ein Afrobeat Special bei Soul Unlimited. Einige sehr interessante neue Veröffentlichungen warten zum Teil schon seit einiger Zeit auf eine angemessene Präsentation. Ende Oktober ist bereits die vierte Folge der Inspiration Information Reihe bei Strut erschienen. Dieses Mal trifft der finnische Musiker Jimi Tenor auf Tony Allen, den legendären Drummer von Fela Kuti’s Band Africa ‘70. Tony Allen gilt als der Erfinder des Afrobeat.
Auf Soundway Records ist eine großartige Compilation die Musik aus Ghana der Jahre 1968 bis 1981 präsentiert. Diese 5LP-Box (Doppel-CD) wird in der Sendung ausführlich vorgestellt.

Here’s another playlist. Playlists are probably my favorite thing to post for some reason. Music is such a main attribute to my life and I love listening to new stuff. And alot of times when I make these playlists I haven’t heard a lot of these songs. I just go through my library and find songs that I like. These posts take the most time. They are also the best to make.. I love pretty much all kinds of music but jam bands aren’t really for me. Or reggae. Just not my style. I have nothing against them I just don’t enjoy the listen. So sorry if your into that kind of music. None of it will really be on any of my playlists. Beirut, Cold War Kids, and Arcade Fire on the other hand will be. Song-Arist-Album.

We’ve come to the end of November. Hello December… You’ve come way too fast. November has been a month filled with too many activities – be still my heart. Emotionally, it has been a rollercoaster too. But this is a place for frivolous things, so let’s skip the heartwrenchers.

Maybe if I just ram my post title with every popular tag imaginable I’ll get more site hits. My wordpress stats tell me that most people stumble onto my blog through searching key words like: Vulva, Engagement Rings, Tiffany & Co. Those are the three key search results that always come up! I’m surprised that not many people end up here for free mp3s… especially when the place is full of it. Incidentally, I’ve got some new lovelies for you to check out. By NEW! I mean like oh em gee this stuff has only been blogged about a bazillion times and my friend’s friend Nico who’s screwing this guy Ted who’s childhood mates with this guy Ben is probably a friend of the band and they’ve been around for longer than a week so they’re not really new per se, but that’s not the point really.

I don’t care much for novelty value, when I put music up it’s music I really really like, regardless of hype. Music, like (good) love, doesn’t come with an expiry date. Tanlines – Power Everything (mp3)

Tanlines from Brooklyn make “calypso disco electro music for various kinds of sex”. This one song would be great to, you know, wake up to… on a Saturday morning.

Radiant Dragon – Cloud Seeding (mp3)

Described as Anglo-Sino-Kraut, Larry Ming Long of Radiant Dragon makes space music that takes you to happy places. If you like Django Django, you’ll like this too.

Termeric – Stryde Off (mp3)

The Girls at Dawn – Every Night (mp3)

The Girls at Dawn are three pretty good lookin chicks from Brooklyn. If I was a dude I’d say I was hot for the one hanging off a branch. This song will make you feel a bit like you’re dancing on clouds with a pint of beer in one hand and a joint in the other. I haven’t heard their other stuff yet but this song reminds me a lot of Dum Dum Girls.

These Are Powers – Life of Birds (mp3)

These Are Powers deliver ghost punk sounds in Life of Birds that are slightly eerie but fun enough to headbang or dance to.

Fuck Buttons – New Crossbow (mp3)

I’ve already blogged about Fuck Buttons before. They make crazy music that fries all your senses in one go, in a good way though. This song is off their Surf Solar album, it sounds a lot more psychedelic than their other songs. Less noise more melody.

Trash Kit – Cadets (mp3)

I met Rachel from Trash Kit at a TEETH!!! gig. She was wearing a badge that says ‘ask me about feminism’. I thought that was funny, although it didn’t make me feel like asking her about it. She’s lovely, and it turns out we have a lot of mutual friends. 6 degrees, innit. Namedropping aside, I think I’m in love with Trash Kit. If you listen to this song you will understand why. It’s not like anything I’ve heard recently.

Surfer Blood – Swim (mp3)

Yes I know, another psych/surf band. But I think you will like Surfer Blood if you’ve listened to a lot of Minus The Bear, Wavves, and Ganglians. I’ve posted another song of theirs in Blood & Salt Water.

Cold Cave was recommended to me by last.fm because I have HEALTH, Silk Flowers and HTRK in my library. You know, darkwave synthzzz, like if Gary Numan had a bad day or something.

Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse ft. David Lynch – Dark Night of the Soul (mp3)

You might have already heard, Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse decided to make an album full of exciting collaborations. I actually found out about this after my friend Jocelyn gave me this track in a mixed CD. It’s so broody and beautiful, can’t stop listening to it. When I first saw the artist tag I was like DAVID LYNCH!? I thought he only made epic movies. These are the bastards you’d love to hate but hate to love: the ones who can do everything.

Reading ‘Red Men’ by Matthew De Abiatua – a near future farce on marketing and consumerism – the protagonist is analysed by software and his tastes served up exactly. Whilst user spending profiling is with us, and I don’t want to start getting all paranoid and muttering about living “off grid”, there are some things that algorithms can’t quite pass muster at.

Playlists being one: Genius Bar from Apple, Last.fm and thesixtyone all work quite well but they rely on genre tags, customer also likes and similar. What makes a great mixtape is the throwing in of something unexpected; out of character but which just makes perfect sense. A bridge between worlds. No point in getting too philosophical here, Nick Hornby’s ‘High Fidelity’ covers the ground well enough.

8tracks are made by humans (actually this post is a kind of repeat of one a few months a go so I will cut to the chase, to the drop), it’s a great source of discovering new tunes so I felt duty bound to return something to the pool and slung together a triptych of mixes – each a very different flavour. Hope something catches.

A few Twitter users will have noticed some users are posting tweets from something called Blip.fm.

Quite simply, it’s a free web page that allows users to post songs and videos to various social media sites – such as Facebook and Twitter.

It’s really pretty good – I didn’t really get into at first – but after giving it a fair try I’m getting into it now!

You can just tune in to favourite DJ’s (or rather people who also use Blip.fm). Other users select songs and their playlist builds up, and you can just select to listen to it.

To be more involved you can start to create your own playlists. This allows other people to then go to your list to listen to your chosen and growing selection of songs.

It’s quite simple – and a top way of finding long time forgotten songs, and discovering new ones you wouldn’t have otherwise thought about.

I particularly like searching through the “Mash Up” selections – song mixes such as Lady Gaga vs. Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas.

For iPhone users there is currently an app called “Boombox Pro” which allows use of Blip.fm via the iPhone. It is a bit temperamental, but there are fixes for it. I have found that it failed totally after my first tries, but by resetting my application key in my Blip.fm settings/password section, Boombox started working again. It’s not faultless yet, as some of the playlist doesn’t update – but the search and Blip function works fine.

Hopefully, Blip.fm will bring out their own app soon… or Boombox will pull their finger out and sort out their bugs.

UPDATE: Received an email from Boombox designers today – They are working on fixes along with Blip.Fm. As that is the case I would recommend Boombox to anyone, simply because the app is a great idea, it almost works and the people working on it offer quick customer support. Good customer support is a must for me.

Anyway, I just thought I’d share a little bit more of what is out there on the web for those who hadn’t heard of it yet!
