Hello everyone! This week’s DDPP was one of epic proportions. The laughing that everyone did in the midst of jumping around and feeling free was incredible! The mix was random to the max! This was just a skimpy collection from her fiancee’s computer because hers is on the fritz. DJ ELby scrambled at the last minute to make a mix from music she was not familiar with, and this is what she came up with!

Notes:

Harris Eisentstadt — “Keep Casting Rods” — Canada Day (Clean Feed, 2009) ….. As opposed to the trumpet-heavy, African-influenced music on many of his albums, Canada Day is closer to a straight free-jazz group, with a sound defined by vibraphone. He’s also got a sax and a trumpet in there, of course.

Hailey Niswanger — “Four in One” — Confeddie (self-released, 2009) ….. Straight-up contemporary jazz that includes a fast, fluid, and quick-jumping saxophone in the lead. Turns out it’s played by a 19-year old woman, Niswanger, who put together this quartet from her Berklee associates. It’s good, inventive stuff; she shows great sax chops on “Four in One” and a complex compositional sense on “Confeddie.”

Shibolet, Josephson, Baker, Looney, Smith — “Number 12″ — Untitled (1959) (Kadima Collective, 2007) ….. Acoustic free improv with local folks and Israeli guest Ariel Shibolet. The titles all come from Mark Rothko paintings, but they’re not all still and silent; this one quickly builds into active, jagged sound work. I followed up this track with Jacam Manricks’ “Rothko” (mentioned back on Oct. 27), and it was tempting to continue with an all-Rothko set. But the next Rothko-inspired track I found was a string orchestra piece that, while only a couple of minutes long, was soooo still and static. Wasn’t in the mood for it, so I went with Jen Baker’s trombone album instead (Blue Dreams, mentioned here), which is also rather static but has a colorful tone to it.

Herb Robertson — “Hallucinations” — Shades of Bud Powell (JMT, 1988) ….. Another vinyl gem tucked away in the KZSU library, this is an album of Powell songs performed by a nearly all-horns band (Joey Baron on drums). Naturally, Robertson leaves plenty of space for improvising, often with the whole group at once (two trumpets, french horn, trombone, and tuba). The track I picked, “Hallucinations,” has long segments of that group work, the result being a little like the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. When you listen carefully to PHJB, you realize that yes, they’re doing old-timey jazz, but the “solo” consists of every band member except the drummer going off in a random direction. Robertson is like that but more distinctly modern/avant-jazz in his sound, of course.

Phil Kline — “Grand Etude for the Elevation” — Around the World in a Daze (Starkland, 2009) ….. This is actually a 65-minute electroacoustic work intended for surroundsound DVD; they’ve provided a CD version for radio. It’s ambitious. There are enormous “boombox choirs,” a string quartet (Ethel!), lots of bells, and, for the final track, 15,000 African gray parrots. The whole project goes for bigness; when I say lots of bells, I mean LOTS. I went for one of the less bombastic tracks, featuring a thumpy “world” drum rhythm and Todd Reynolds on sweet-but-loud violin.

Over at My Sphere of Domesticity, Kate has a great post on character anthems.

I am one of those people who cannot write or paint without music. As I worked on Hemlock, I quickly realized that certain characters, pairings, and scenes each had their own theme song.

Though the entire playlists have become too large and cumbersome to list, I thought I’d share which songs have become central.

Patty Griffin, “Every Little Bit” – This became Mac’s theme early on. The song makes me think of someone who is just struggling to get by when life keeps hauling the rug out from under her and that’s very much what happens to Mackenzie in Hemlock.

Matthew Good, “Weapon” – This song has always belonged to Kyle though I also used it when writing one of the more violent scenes. It’s one of those rare songs that makes me feel like I could explode into pieces. It sums up Kyle’s love/hate relationship with himself quite well.

Aimee Mann, “The Scientist” – I didn’t think I could ever love a cover of Coldplay’s The Scientist. It’s one of the few songs I consider absolutely perfect. A few weeks into the rewrite of Hemlock, I found out that Aimee Mann had recorded a live version. As soon as I heard it, I knew it was Mac and Kyle’s song.

Aimee Mann, “That’s How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart” – It’s probably not surprising that I ended up with two Aimee Mann songs on my Hemlock playlists. What is a little surprising is that each Aimee Mann song represents Mackenzie’s relationship with either Kyle or Jason. Kyle got the Scientist and Jason got this one.

You might notice that there’s no theme song for Jason, the other point in the triangle. The truth is, I could never get a handle on his theme song. Certain Garbage songs — Temptation Waits, Bleed Like Me, Only Happy When it Rains — come closest but have never quite felt right.

Hi Everyone, Happy Friday! What a week! I am ready to detox mentally and settle into a weekend full

Hi Everyone,

Happy Friday! What a week! I am ready to detox mentally and settle into a weekend full of homework. Sounds fun, huh?

Apparently this is the season to guest post! I will be posting on a number of my favorite blogs over the next few weeks, so that’s pretty exciting. In fact, the guest posting frenzy starts right now. Rachel from Shedding It and Getting It suggested that we do guest playlists on each others blogs. I hope you will you check out my post, I have to say it is one of my favorite playlists ever!

Let’s get right into the Leaner Legs Workout #3!

As you might have guessed, I borrowed heavily from Tina’s workout and I loved it! I modified slightly:

Set 1

30 alternating lunges with bicep curls on bosu ball (5 lb. weights)

40 Squats holding weights on bosu

15 stationary lunges (each side) on bosu with hammer curls

30 plie squats with upright row holding weights

Set 2

30 alternating lunges with bicep curls on bosu ball (5 lb. weights)

40 squats on bosu

15 stationary lunges (each side) on bosu holding weights

15 plie squats with upright row

I forgot to stretch! Ooops

But I did go right into my second cardio session of the day. 30 minutes on the elliptical alternating one minute of moderate intensity with one minute of high intensity (I did the same thing that morning, so a total of 60 minutes).

I have a bunch of great leg workouts I am excited to try and share, but if you would like to do a guest post leaner legs workout, I would be happy to feature you!

For my AB ATTACK

aka Whittle My Middle, I busted out the ab moves I featured in a video post quite a while ago. The post is a little embarrassing, but the ab moves are good! Speaking of abs, someone asked what the ragdoll move is. It’s hard to explain in words, but basically, it is a standing ab move where you drop to one side quickly as if your arm was moving down along the outside of your leg, limp like a doll, and the come up from an L with one arm up and the other straight out and reach to the side. Repeat on the other side. While this is nothing like my standing ab routine, it’s a good example of a standing ab work (if the video doesn’t work just click over to youtube):

Other fitness musings…

I am loving my cardio intervals lately, they really help me get out of my comfort zone without too much discomfort For once, I have a good balance of cardio and strength in my regimen, I usually tend to get sucked into one or the other. But I do have to start running, less than a week until Turkey Trot!

Oh, we just switched cable companies and I finally have FitTV! Yay!

There aren’t generally a lot of fun things about being dumped. Except, that is, for the opportunity to create a tailor-made playlist that covers all the key breakup stages – feeling sorry for yourself, feeling sorry for them, being mad, being rude, feeling sorry for yourself again, and eventually getting over it. I was ‘lucky’ enough to have the chance to do this recently and this, along with contributions from others, is what I came up with – a mix of genres and emotions and likely the only time I will ever post a Kelly Clarkson track on one of these. So, for all of you who have been bruised, but not broken, by love, I give you Wonderful Noise Mix 3: Songs for the Dumped.
