Haven’t you heard? Tuesday is the new Thursday in terms of weekly Photoshopping. I didn’t realise last week but from now we’ll be doing this on Tuesdays. This week the theme was Stephen Ireland. Then Thierry Henry decided to handball his way to becoming the worst human being in the history of mankind and thus the theme was changed by The Guardian.

I personally think it’s all a big much ado about nothing. Yes he cheated, but it hardly tarnishes a whole 16 year career. There’s been a distinct lack of perspective, and too many people in the media forgot that it was hardly a given that Ireland were going to World Cup. It was 1-1 on aggregate at the time after all. 

Also, as has been pointed out in many places, weren’t Ireland the beneficiaries of their own ridiculous handball decision in World Cup qualifying? Swings and roundabouts. Anyway, my internetless woes at home continue somewhat so it’s another simple entry this week.

The France-Ireland playoff in Paris on Wednesday was memorable for both the right and the wrong reasons. You will know all about these already and there is a good chance that you  feel somewhat overexposed and perhaps even a little nauseous as a result of it all. I know that by Saturday morning I was completely over it; not the match outcome, but the moral indignation. As a nation, perhaps the only prize similar to a trip to the World Cup finals is a spot of moral outrage, of wallowing in the mire, of feeling (rightly) aggrieved. The only thing that could’ve made it better is if we had been wronged by England.

The way in which the chain of events unfolded was startling. On Wednesday night, I went to bed rather the worse for wear feeling that Ireland had – of course – been robbed of a place at the World Cup, but that as a minor football nation, nobody would really care much for the injustice which took place in Paris. The next morning (or rather afternoon – the previous night’s events inhibited the usual early start) the papers were full of it. Not only Irish newspapers, but British ones, French ones, and others across Europe. The story was becoming a real scandal. By the day’s end, it was the talk of American newspapers too, and the whole world seemed to feel that not only was Ireland wronged, but they perhaps even deserved a replay.

The online community mobilized. A Facebook group had, by the end of Thursday, taken in almost a hundred thousand members, and by the end of Friday, there were almost a quarter of a million onboard. These were not only Irish fans, but football fans from across Europe and the world. While the group began as a petition to FIFA calling on them to replay the game, the organizer had decided by Friday afternoon to hold a protest march. Hilariously, his initial proposal to march the traditional protest route in Dublin from Parnell Square to FAI Headquarters was scuppered when someone pointed out that the FAI was no longer located in Merrion Square, in the city centre, but in Abbottstown, a far flung suburb. Eventually it was decided to instead march from Lansdowne Road to the French Embassy.

By Friday afternoon, talk of a replay was everywhere. The FAI submitted a formal appeal to both FIFA and the French Football Federation, asking the latter to replay the game in the interests of sportsmanship and fair play. The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, and minister Dermot Ahern both pronounced on the subject in Ireland’s favour. Nicolas Sarkozy and Prime Minister Francois Fillon responded for France.

Talk of a replay never sat well with me. On Thursday I was hungover and outraged. By Friday I was annoyed and still feeling a little tender. At no point did I want a replay. I wanted vindication in the vaguest sense possible. In the back of my mind was a nagging feeling that even if Ireland did secure a replay, they’d  go back to Paris and get stuffed three nil (see the below post on Irish optimism).

What made the entire media storm even more bizarre was that people from across the sporting world and beyond chimed in, taking one side or another. This meant that by Friday, Ireland could count on the support of two members of Arsenal’s famous back four, Nigel Winterburn and Lee Dixon, as well as that of the leader of the school teacher’s union in France, as well as their Minister of Economic Affairs, Christine Lagarde. And, oddly enough, Thierry Henry. The most notable name to oppose Irish designs for a replay was Henry’s Gillette buddy Roger Federer, and Roy Keane.*

* Roy Keane’s involvement in any debate tends to kill it stone dead. When Keane pronounces on an issue, it’s the equivalent of hearing a song by a semi-obscure band who you hitherto thought were yours and yours alone being used on a TV ad for chewing gum or breakfast cereal, or, even worse, being covered by Mundy.

The whole thing quickly took on the air of farce, and by Saturday morning, I felt myself a tad embarrassed by it all. It had run its course, we’d had a good old whinge, we’d gotten our Prime Time special, and now we should move on. Which it seems we are, helped along by the fact that a number of Irish towns are currently under water and people have real problems to deal with.

So, now that the saga appears to be over, how will we look back on this? I really have no idea and no answers. I’m all done with righteous indignation.

TCU has struggled a bit on the road in November (4-9-1 ATS). Wyoming is 13-5 ATS off a SU win and 5-1 ATS at home with revenge off a straight up and ATS win. Letdown is a real possibility with this inflated line.

So, France are going to the World Cup. Keane and co can begin booking their summer holidays for 2010, as they are not going anywhere. The Football Association of Ireland has lodged a complaint with FIFA asking for their World Cup play-off against France to be replayed. Good luck getting Michele Platini to sign that one off! Ireland are out though. That is final. The result says so. And FIFA will not intervene and reverse the result or call for a replay.

In case you haven’t already heard, Thierry Henry broke Irish fans hearts’ last night by scoring in extra time to send France to the 2010 World Cup. As if there hadn’t been enough injustice in the lead up to the World Cup playoffs with the seedings debacle, Ireland were outdone after being arguably the strongest team in their two legged playoff match with France. They battled for 180 minutes across and after being beaten in Ireland showed tremendous courage in beating France 1-0 in Paris to force extra time.

Step up on Monsieur Henry. A double handball hand ball later in the penalty area and a pass to William Gallas who put the ball into an empty net sent Les Blues through 2-1 on aggregate. Irish protestations obviously followed but nothing came of it. A referee never changes his decision. In a statement today, football’s world governing body said: “As stated in Law 5 of the Laws of the Game, and also in Article 13, paragraph 6 of the Regulations of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, ‘no protests may be made about the referee’s decisions regarding facts connected with play. Such decisions are final, unless otherwise stipulated in the Fifa Disciplinary Code.’”

The media reaction and the reaction in Ireland has been phenomenal. A sense of injustice is being felt and the arguments will ramble on all the way to South Africa next summer where the finals are being held. The Irish FA and even the Irish government (who have been heavily involved today) should ask themselves what they would have made of it Robbie Keane scoring a similar goal at the other end of the stadium to take Ireland to the World Cup? Robbie Keane would not have turned round and told the referee he had handled the ball and there should be no goal. This simply does not happen. Football begins as a level playing field each match and some decisions will go with and some will go against your team. Giovanni Trapattoni, the Republic of Ireland’s manger is hugely experienced and knows very well that if it had been the other way round that he would have thought it was hard luck the French but there is nothing that can be done. Trapattoni is a realist and said after the game, he does not expect a replay. “When a referee decides a game has finished I know it is impossible to replay the game,” said the Italian.

Some pundits, like Tony Cascorino, a former Republic of Ireland international have suggested that Henry should have done the gentlemanly thing and owned up to the referee that he had controlled the ball with his hand. This is ludicrous. We cannot get to the stage where players have the power to overturn referees decisions even for the better. Self regulation of a football match by players will lead to chaos and the referee will not have a clue what is going on (which by the way is often the situation now anyway) It would be a case of the lunatics running the asylum. Not all players will own up to the referee on diving or handling the ball, some might but others (most) won’t.

But can we follow Cascorino’s train of thought and blame Thierry Henry for not owning up to his indiscretion? The simple answer is no. If Ireland’s talismanic striker Robbie Keane had scored in similar fashion at the other end, he would have run off towards the Irish fans and done his trademark cart wheel in celebration at the thought of playing on the world’s biggest stage next summer and being the Irish hero who had sent them there. The Irish FA have cleverly introduced mind games by lavishing praise on Henry’s talents as a footballer before pointing out that his legacy will be tainted with this scandal. But it won’t, as Henry is protected by the fact that the decision was not his to make. Henry knows he hand balled it but jurisdiction for this decision was not his. It was the match officials’ choice and that is where the buck stops; unfortunately for the Irish fans.

Henry obviously did something wrong if he deliberately handled the ball and deceived the referee. This is cheating. But the simple way to eradicate this is to introduce technology to stop it. These things happen in sport and they will happen again. It goes back to the famous 1966 World Cup Final where England benefited from a dodgy Russian linesman. What would have happened in 1986 if one Diego Maradona had so, ‘oh hang on a sec, I didn’t head that in, I used my fist.’ England may have won the 1986 World Cup. But Maradona was never going to own up to it in the same way Henry wasn’t going to. The stakes were too high. Whether they should have owned up could take another entire blog post. But it is Football as a sport that is in the wrong by remaining in the dark ages of technology. Other sports have demonstrated how easy it is to incorporate technology that aids the fair outcome of a sporting tussle. Look at how hawk eye has been introduced into Tennis Grand Slams. Video replay technology has been introduced into international Rugby for try decisions and is used in Cricket to decide on run outs. Football is big business and the amount of money the Irish FA are going to lose out on in sponsorships and endorsements is huge considering how easy it would have been to ensure they had a fair chance of realising their World Cup pot of gold dream.

The game last night is undoubtedly more evidence for the need for technology to aid the match officials for goal line decisions or penalty area decisions but not all over the pitch. It won’t spoil the game and will vastly improve it. Had it been introduced this year and France were beaten on penalties, Monsieur Henry may well be at home now flicking through holiday brochures for next summer as he wouldn’t be going to South Africa.

Okay, I know that I am going completely off-topic here. I just could not help to see what happened to the national Egyptian team supporters at El- Khartoum, Sudan after the Algeria vs. Egypt 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ playoff match yesterday and not act upon it. So I decided to send a letter to the FIFA, here is what it says:

“To whom it may concern,

To say that I am shocked with your negative attitude regarding the aftermath of the Algerian victory against Egypt in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ playoff held on Wednesday, November 19^th at Omdurman – Al Merreikh stadium in El- Khartoum, Sudan would be an understatement. On 2003, you declared “My Game is Fair Play” to be the code associated with your organization and football for the years to come. The events that occurred at El- Khartoum on that day were not remotely close to fair play in any way, shape, or form.

Apart from the terrorization that happened to the players of the national team of Egypt in Sudan before and during the course of the game, and referee Eddy Maillet not being able to cope with the pressure as he is rumoured to travel to Algeria in 10 days for a match there, the Egyptian supporters whom sole fault was that they travelled to El- Khartoum to support their national team were harmed and abused by the hands of the Algerian team supporters, even though the Egyptian national team did not even win the match. The coaches that carried the Egyptian supporters to the airport were brutally attacked and many of the supporters were severely injured. So I am asking you, is this what football about?

- Respect opponents, team-mates, referees, officials and spectators.

- Reject corruption, drugs, racism, violence, gambling and other dangers to our sport.

Those are the fourth and seventh principles of the Fair-Play code, respectively. Do you believe that those principles were applied during the course of the playoff match? Were the Egyptian players and spectators really respected, and was violence rejected? You do not have to take my words for that; see the images on the news channels and the videos on YouTube. And I ask you again, was that, really, fair play?

You may believe that the national team of Algeria won fair and square and fully deserve the last African place at the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. However, what kind of message will you be delivering to the football world with that? The team with the most aggressive supporters qualifies? The team that breaks the greatest number of the Fair-Play Code principles wins?

I urge the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ organizing committee to take quick action regarding the unfortunate events that occurred at El- Khartoum, Sudan prior to, during the course of, and posterior to the Algeria vs. Egypt playoff match. The Fédération Algérienne de Football has to be penalized and be made an example of in order to prevent such events from ever occurring again in the name of sports. Please, save the spirit of football and act upon your code: “My Game Is Fair Play”.

1. A escolha do 4×3x3

Ao longo da desastrosa fase de qualificação o principal problema de Portugal foi a animação ofensiva. A selecção não era capaz de produzir movimentos colectivos de qualidade. Este problema foi resolvido com a mudança de sistema táctico, Queiroz abandonou o 4×3x3 e adoptou o 4×4x2. A diferença notou-se logo. Portugal jogou melhor, parecia mais equipa e sem jogar um grande futebol consegui qualificar-se para os playoffs.

Parecia-me então lógico Portugal continuar a jogar em 4×4x2 e por definitivamente de lado o 4×3x3. Mas não, frente a Bósnia Queiroz voltou ao 4×3x3. Ele quis aproveitar o facto da Bósnia jogar com três defesas e no papel até pode parecer boa ideia, mas não creio que frente a uma selecção claramente inferior a nossa Portugal tenha que adaptar-se. Antes pelo contrario, frente a Bósnia, Portugal devia ter imposto o seu jogo o seu estilo e não ter deixado o adversário ditar o seu esquema táctico.

Este foi um grande erro de Queiroz. Não tenho duvidas que ao jogar em 4×4x2 Portugal teria obtido um resultado bem melhor.

2. Quem tem medo compra um cão … ou fica em casa.

Via-se na atitude dos jogadores, do seleccionador e até do publico que havia medo. Portugal podia ter pressionado mais, arriscado mais, tentado mais e já ter arrumado este playoff. Mas não … os jogadores estavam poucos confiantes e isto fez com que ficamos com este pobre 1-0. Como costuma-se dizer quem tem medo compra um cão ou fica em casa … ou seja se era para jogar tinha que ser a atacar, a arriscar e a querer mais do que um 1-0.

3. Bósnia: uma selecção fraca.

Muito se falou desta selecção Bósnia. Dos seus talentosos, do seu poder físico, do seu seleccionador experiente. Eu não vi ai nenhuma selecção que Portugal não pudesse golear hoje. Ha jogadores de talento, aquele Dzeko é muito bom e consegue proteger a bola muito bem, mas fora estes dois ou três bons jogadores é tudo muito fraco. A defesa só cometia erros (basta ver o posicionamento dos defesas no golo de bruno Alves), não eram capazes de controlar o jogo, se Portugal tivesse jogado com a defesa mais alta, pressionado mais … teria sido muito mais fácil, mas repito, a nossa selecção teve medo, recuou, deixou jogar e deixou esta selecção ameaçar-nos.

4. Sorte portuguesa

Até hoje Queiroz e a selecção não tiveram muita sorte. Frente a Dinamarca logo no primeiro não merecíamos perder e ao longo desta campanha houve muita falta de sorte … mas sábado saiu-nos o Euromilhões. Tivemos muita sorte, a Bósnia só não saiu da Luz com uma vitoria porque desta vez tivemos mesmo muita sorte. Mas tal sorte não se repete duas vezes …

4. Putos mimados

Sábado Ronaldo não jogou mas graças a péssima realização até pareceu que ele estava la dentro do campo. Não sou grande fã do CR7/9 nem sou um anti-ronaldo mas não gosto da sua atitude. O hino a acabar o puto mimado já estava em pé a ir para a zona vip. Golo da selecção o estádio a festejar, Ronaldo olha para o relógio. Ele faz o que bem lhe apetece, não sou ninguém para julgar as suas reacções, mas estas atitudes, estes detalhes são muitos reveladores da sua personalidade … só não vê quem não quer. Durante o mesmo tempo Figo batia palmas … aqui esta a diferença entre um Senhor e um puto mimado.

Após a sua entrevista de puto mimado, Nani tinha sábado a sua tão desejada titularidade. Era uma oportunidade em ouro para mostrar ao pais inteiro que ele merecia este lugar. A pois é Nani não são com palavras polémicas ditas nas entrevistas que se ganha um lugar mas sim com grandes exibições em jogo desses … e ele foi uma nulidade, um individualista de primeira. Eu que até fui um grande defensor de Nani, eu que pensava que ele tinha uma atitude mais altruísta do que Ronaldo … enganei-me.

5. Coentrão o anti-puto mimado

O Fabio Coentrão que é da mesma geração (ou quase) de Ronaldo e Nani não é um puto mimado. Tem talento, se calhar não tem tanto que os dois putos mimados, mas compensa com a sua motivação e atitude. Mas hoje foi uma nulidade. Porque? Porque ter a sua primeira oportunidade na selecção logo num jogo destes … é a pior coisa que possa existir. Mais uma vez Queiroz esteve muito mal … mas é compreensível, Queiroz nem tem muita experiência e nunca teve que lançar jovens pois não? Ah já teve? Ah perdão. Não há desculpas Queiroz!

6. Conclusão
Ir a Bósnia com uma vantagem de 1-0 deixa a selecção numa situação desconfortável e não liberta os jogadores da pressão. Hoje Portugal tinha tudo ao seu favor para resolver já o playoff, até a sorte estava do seu lado! Mas não … Queiroz e os seus jogadores não quiserem. Portugal vai ter que sofrer muito para ir ao mundial …

Head Coach Miroslav Blažević will be plotting his master plan to evict Portugal in this vital playoff two legged tie. Two players that Bosnia will count on in taking them to the world cup are Zlatan Muslimovic, from Udinese, and Edin Dzeko, Wolfsburg. Both players are top scorer for their country and if they can get things going then the Portuguese might find it tough to handle them. Bosnia will do their best to qualify for the world cup for the first time in their history.

It will be a tragedy if Portugal does not make it to the World Cup but a strong bond Bosnia team are a good replacement for them. Portugal will do their best to wrap up the tie in Lissabon and if that happens, Bosnia will be facing a uphill struggle to qualify. Bosnia knows this is already a tough task so they would try to avoid getting trashed in Portugal, if possible.

Can Robbie Keane shoot Ireland into the World Cup next summer in South Africa?

A two legged tie between Ireland and France will determine one winner who will join the big party in South Africa next summer for the World Cup. Keiren Westwood will be replaced by Brain Murphy.

France have surprisingly omitted Captain Patrick Vieira for their double encounter against Ireland. Coach Raymond Domenech decided to cut Vieira because he has not been a regular in the Inter team. Vieira has only appeared nine times for Inter in all competition. Domenech has an aura of doing his business in a mysterious way and he has striked once again by picking two uncapped players, Girondins Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso and Olympique Lyon defender Aly Cissokho. France will be travel to Ireland with familiar faces like Nicolas Anelka, Abou Diaby, Patrice Evra and Thierry Henry.

Ireland was unbeaten in their group and that’s a positive sign going into the match against France. There will be no shortage of excitement in this tie and both teams have players to attack at any given time. Last time France visited Croke Park, they were victorious with a 1-0 win but this time the Irish will at least claim a draw.

Sorry.  There’s no such thing.  You are “entitled” to nothing as a sports fan.  You don’t “deserve” anything for being a fan.

Of course, that doesn’t change the fact that you really want some things.  If you’re like the average sports fan, you probably want a college football playoff.  You probably don’t care about ”excessive celebration.”  You probably want instant replay in baseball.  You probably want to believe that money isn’t everything, and that the Kansas City Royals could, in theory, win a World Series.  You probably feel like they should have the DH in both leagues, because you’ve paid too much for your tickets to watch pitchers come to the plate batting .162 lifetime.  Maybe you want to see the “Steroid List” and just get it over with.

In short, you probably wish things in sports were a little different.  You want change.  So here’s been your plan to effect change so far:
1.)  Yell at your television while watching the game.
2.)  Post your complaints on Twitter and Facebook while watching the game.
3.)  Call your local sports radio show and complain after watching the game.
4.)  Sit with other fans in the sports bar while watching the game and complain together.
5.)  Gather around the grill at your tailgate and complain before watching the game.
6.)  Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper after watching the game.

All of these steps, taken by you and countless thsousands of others,  have resulted in raising awareness of the fact that sports fans want things to be different.  There’s no question about it.  If the success of sports franchises was based on customer satisfaction, they’d hear you chant “jump” and ask you “How high?”

But when it comes to sports, customer satisfaction doesn’t really matter.  See, none of your yelling and complaining and writing is effecting change, because your plan is fatally flawed.  Despite these steps, you’re still watching the game.

NBA on TNT Free Sports Betting Pick

The Cavaliers lead off in the double header tonight in on TNT. Lebron James and the Cavs will take on the young Chicago Bulls. The Bulls are off a very impressive win against the Bucks and will have to be on top of their game to take down the Cavs tonight.
