DISCLAIMER: The following article does contain spoilers that may apply to the gameplay and overall story arc of Assassin’s Creed II. Be advised that by reading this article, you may ruin your experience playing through the game itself.

Despite having much critical success, many gamers denounced Assassin’s Creed for being a repetitive “grind-fest” with little narrative closure to offer. What’s that you say? You did as well? Well, perhaps the time has come to shed those deep-seeded feelings. Enter Assassin’s Creed II. Ubisoft have offered up the sequel to their 2007 hit(which has sold 8 million copies to date) nearing the cessation of the holiday release window. Ultimately, you are likely to ask, “Why should I attempt to partake of a franchise in which I disliked the debut?” Simply because Assassin’s Creed II truly bests it’s predecessor in practically every way.

The first installment in the series was set in dual time periods: Desmond Miles(Nolan North), a kidnapped bartender in the year 2012, is forced to relive the existence of his ancestor, Altair, in the Middle East during the Third Crusade. Upon the first forty-five minutes of gameplay this time, it is come to be known that Desmond is to become the central “behind-the-scenes” character of Assassin’s Creed II as well. The cute and smart Lucy Stillman(voiced by actress Kristen Bell) reprises her role, but the player quickly realizes that she has much more of an “edge” to her character. Uttering a few four-letter obscenities, she springs Desmond for the evil clutches of the Templar corporation, Abstergo, leading to the conclusion that she is in league with the Assassins.

Lucy and Desmond.

Once the man with the world’s most sought-after DNA is secured in the safehouse, he soon discovers that the “good guys” have their own model of the tech used to decipher these “memories”- the Animus 2.0. Why is Des so willing to slip back into the chair? It would seem that Altair is not Mr. Miles’ only ancestor associated with the Assassins. Ezio Auditore de Firenze, a rough-and-tumble young man hidden under the cloak of being a nobleman’s son, happens to be Desmond Miles’ next inhabitable patriarch.

In contrast to the prior game, Ubi shows forth an extremely methodical and well-paced narrative throughout the entirety of Assassin’s Creed II. Each mission makes sense because, even though the player is using the same mechanics for most of the journey, numerous objectives and elements are introduced from beginning to end. But gameplay structure is NOT what keeps the title fresh for a majority of the 25+ hours you might spend with it. The development team achieved something special in the connection the player is drawn to make with it’s main protagonist. Simply by drawing back the white Assassin hood once every few hours and adding facial hair as time passes(years DO go by as the story progresses), Ezio becomes much more human than Altair ever was.

The control scheme is pretty much the normal faire that one familiar with the first title would expect, but with one rather large addition: the selection wheel. Akin to something a la Mass Effect or Dragon Age, the wheel is the only manner in which to make sense of the numerous gadgets Ezio amasses along the way. Left on the directional pad(which used to be the dagger) is now replaced with single-dose medicine. Yes, that’s right! Gone is the set amount of health as self-healing is now possible. Other than these changes, traversing the world is almost identical to Assassin’s Creed, but it’s been given a shot in the arm. Ezio climbs faster and, around the midway point of the game, he learns a “leap” addition to his climbing skill, eliminating the ever-present possibility of having to find the specific path of scalable objects.

“I sure could use that weapon. Thanks!”

Remember how vanilla and uninteresting the combat felt two years ago? It would seem that the development team payed attention to the fact that spamming counters was AC’s “insta-win” button. It feels much more tactile this time around- each button press really seems to correspond with in-game movements. One new component brought on-board is the ability to disarm your foes while engaged in unarmed combat. Nothing is more satisfying than pilfering an enemy’s polearm, then turning him into an armored shish-ka-bob.

Of course, every “public” kill or assassination adds to the gauge of yet another new element- the Notoriety Meter. Once the outer ring of the meter fills, Ezio becomes “notorious”. With this status, guards are aware of(and sometimes seems like expecting) your every move. Luckily, there are ways to reduce your newfound and unwanted fame: tearing down wanted posters cuts small chunks, but if you are in a hurry, simply pay off a few town criers and you may carry on as you see fit.

“How many guaranteed kills on used weapons?”

As if all of these new ingredients were not enough, Assassin’s Creed II also boasts a monetary system. Treasure chests are sprawled out across the landscape and merchants wait with baited breath as they heckle you to loosen your purse strings. Once Ezio discovers the family Villa, it is up to him to revive it from it’s run-down state. Doing so nets you merchant discounts and incoming revenue, making play that much easier. It is a great addition, but once the surface is scratched, it’s lack of depth becomes apparent.

But what about the graphics, you ask? Assassin’s Creed II sports a graphical engine that improves over it’s forebearer in look and scope. The only niggle here is that, while increasing the size and height of each city/location, fogging is a bit more apparent to the eye. The textures are beautiful, placed correctly, and amazingly, there are many types of them on several different structures. The recreation of Italian locales must have been a painstaking process as each landmark is almost it’s real-world doppleganger. These famous buildings are not just placed here for your parkour pleasure, though: some grant you the ability to explore inside.

If your love for Assassin’s Creed as a series began with interest in titles such as Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia, you will find even more diamonds in the rough here. There are six optional Assassin tombs(plus a few Templar strongholds) that are the inner havens to the landmarks described above. These are more physically puzzle-based rather than combat-focused(although there may be guards present). There are timed switches by the boatload, advanced techniques are needed to progress, and if Ubisoft is smart, the sections will be more fully integrated into the last installment.

“Can we chat a bit before you expire?”

With as many innovative progressions as have been made in ACII, one thing was conspicuously absent- “glitches” in the cutscenes. Simple button presses corresponding to screen flashes would allow the player to watch it for a fresh angle. Also, after a satisfying assassination, these semi-quicktime events gave the opportunity to view the dead mark to pace back and forth, all the while revealing pieces of the plot. It definitely helped to prevent yanking the player out of the action. This needs to make a return in the future.

This article is the first in the Platinum Retrospective Review series, so how could it not culminate in trophy discussion? Assassin’s Creed II should be the shining example on how do implement trophies(and achievements) correctly. Silvers for completing each chapter, a Gold for completion, and various Bronzes for physical accomplishments. Most are earned simply by finishing the main story, but three to four hours on the back end can net you a really satiating Platinum. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ATTEMPT THE TROPHY FOR “FLY SWATTER” AS YOU ONLY HAVE LIMITED ACCESS TO THE FLYING MACHINE. Ubisoft has also setup their own rewards system entitled “Uplay”. Certain actions can offer your choice of reward. The player can spend their points not only on this games, but future Ubi titles as well. Items extended to you are themes and DLC, among other things- yet another worthwhile augmentation.

In summation, the latest installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise is improved in voluminous manner. Aside from a few extremely limited detractions, ACII markedly ups the ante and shows that the series has been prepared to ascend to the realm of AAA titles. A large part of this is thanks no doubt to the growth as well of the soundtrack’s composer, Jesper Kyd. The series can now be considered among the greatest of the industry. The Assassin’s Creed is simple: “Nothing is true; everything is permitted.” Apparently, Ubisoft took those words to to heart.

SCORE: 94 out of 100

¡Has sido advertido!

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (PSP)

“We are very excited to present fans of the highly acclaimed Borderlands with the first expansion,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned presents a bold new storyline that entertains and excites, and simultaneously ensures that fans still receive the same great gameplay experience that made the original game a success.”

Press Release from Ubisoft:

LONDON, UK – November 24, 2009 – Today Ubisoft announced record first week sales performance for its Assassin’s Creed™ II video game with 1.6 million units sold through worldwide according to internal estimates. This represents 32% growth over the first week sales of Assassin’s Creed. Launched in November 2007, Assassin’s Creed remains the fastest selling new video game intellectual property ever in the U.S.

Assassin’s Creed II has received an overwhelmingly positive reception from gamers around the world and from the video game trade press with to date an average user rating of 94% on Gamespot.com and over 91% average critics score according to GameRankings.com.

Assassin’s Creed II invites players to become Ezio, a privileged young noble in Renaissance Italy who’s been betrayed by the rival ruling families of Italy. Ezio’s subsequent quest for vengeance plunges players into a captivating and epic story that offers more variety in missions, surprising and engaging new game play elements, diverse weapons, incredible depth and lasting appeal and a profound character progression that will appeal to fans of the original Assassin’s Creed as well as entice players new to the brand.

Lyfe’s Take: I have played roughly 75% of ACII thus far and, in my opinion, it is indeed in the running for Game of the Year honors. There is just a tremendous amount of gameplay offered up in the title. We’ll be going into greater depth as of why on the live show, but I will say this: if you appreciated what AC tried to do, there is NO reason why you should not be playing this.

SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced Andrea Bonaccorso as the winner of the BAYONETTA™ contest on Maxim.com, the digital counterpart to Maxim, the largest young men’s lifestyle magazine in America. The judges were looking for the one woman who best captures the essence, personality, style and appeal of the heroine of PlatinumGames’ upcoming action game and found it in Andrea. While some entrants perfectly mirrored the outfit of the character and others simply donned librarian glasses, Andrea married both elements to come out on top.

As winner of the contest, she is being spotlighted on Maxim.com and will receive an Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, a 50 inch Panasonic TC-P50X1 HDTV Plasma TV and a copy of BAYONETTA for the Xbox 360®.

BAYONETTA is a cinematic, stylized action game from the famed creative mind of renowned game developer, Hideki Kamiya of PlatinumGames. Bayonetta, the game’s protagonist, is a graceful, gun-wielding witch who awakens after being entombed in a coffin at bottom of a lake for 500 years with no memory. As players embark on this quest with Bayonetta, they will begin to unfold the mystery behind her past and her purpose in the game, such as why she fights against angels and other countless fantastic enemies. In combat, Bayonetta uses weapons, magic, acrobatics and her larger-than-life hair to redefine the look and feel of the action genre.

BAYONETTA™ is scheduled for release on January 5th, 2010 for Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. For game details, visit sega.com/platinumgames/bayonetta/.

From GameSpot:

One the biggest selling points of the PlayStation 3 is that gamers can use the console to play online at no additional charge. However, evidence has surfaced that the company is planning a two-tiered subscription model for the PlayStation Network similar to–but also fundamentally different from–Xbox Live.

Perhaps to assuage PS3 owners’ fears that they would soon have to pay to play online, Hirai issued a subsequent statement indicating the present level of service would remain gratis.

“SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral, and PlayStation Network,” Hirai said in a statement given to British outlets, such as CVG. “Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.“

One of the greatest Hack and Slash series of all time that I discovered first in 2008 through Skorch82 video-walkthroughs is about to get its third installment. I did not know what to expect from it. I was a big fan of the Soul Reaver series and after I have watched two videos of Skorchs guide I knew that I am going to like the God of War games, too. In 2008 I made my PlayStation2 ready again and bought me the two parts of God of War that I missed. I played 5 hours per day and finished both games inside one single week and I was still screaming for more! God of War III will come and now I get the chance to replay this two epic stories again on my PlayStation3.

A short overview

There is no need to explain the story of the game because it would spoil too much. All you should know is that you play as Kratos – one of Spartans greatest Warlords – but his fate condemned him to serve the gods and to obey their orders in reverse for everything he once loved. Terrible nightmares dont let him sleep most of the time until Athena offers his soul peace after one final task: He needs to destroy Ares – the god of war.

The God of War games are well known for their varied gameplay. Most of the time you will slaughter, tear up and kill enemies in a very brutal and bloody way. You collect orbs of different color to regain health, mana and to upgrade your blades and force wich you need to unlock while playing through the game and solving tricky puzzles. The games won a lot of prices, including “Game of the Year” honors from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences and is listed in almost every Top Playstation 2 game ranking of admitted sites and magazines.

The game was re-released on the Playstation 3 this year in a Collectors Edition, featuring a trophy system and remastered for rendition in High Definition. I got it for 23 EUR in reverse for my Playstation 2 releases at GameStop and played it today. Lets see if the promotion campaign that promises “a much better experience of two greatest hits” is justified.

Collectors Edition

Lets get straight to the point: The Collectors Edition for PS3 is better as I have expected. You get both games, including all their features and mini games that were inside the original releases and every “Making of” episode + new “Making of” content can be found and viewed directly from the blue ray disk. The games itself were remastered f0r rendition in 720p HD. That means that every texture and model was edited and drawn again by hand to give the edges the look of a 2x AntiAliasing (AA cant be rendered by the PS3 graphics chip) and better sharpness. But there are still some weak points wich I dont like that much: All with the ingames engine premade cut scenes look as awful as they were in the original releases for the PS2. Only the animated videos beat their predecessor versions by far! The graphic inside the game looks a way better as before but always reminds you on the fact that the God of War games were first released on the PS2. Some textures look very blurry and misplaced, but this is what you need to accept if you buy a game that was mentioned to be played on a platform from the last console generation.

Please dont misunderstand me, the Collectors Edition is great and the games look really awesome and you can see that they put a lot of effort into the remastering. I only wish that they had put in a little bit more time into making it. The same goes for the trophies. I thought there were much more but until now I just see trophies for God of War I. The CE does not remove the old gameplay and the game’s atmosphere is still the greatest you will ever experience. God of War I and II are outstanding games that I really love to enjoy both a second time. It’s a dirty, brutal and violent world in wich Kratos lives and a MUST BUY for every fan and people who never had the chance to play the originals.

You may think that your gaming console is obsolete and you want to purchase a new one before the year ends, this will serve as your gift to yourself for the holidays and also a gift for your children if you have them. One of the most anticipated gaming consoles today is the PlayStation 3 by Sony. Sony is widely known in the gaming console world and is also the company that gave the world the Sony PlayStation and the Sony PlayStation 2. Today, many people are now waiting for the official release of PlayStation 3 in the market this coming November 2006 in Japan and in North America. You can expect that people will be shopping early for the holidays for this much-anticipated gaming console. In fact, many people have preordered or made reservations for PlayStation 3 before it has even hit the shelves of PlayStation retail outlets. This is to ensure them ownership of a PlayStation 3 upon the official release of the gaming console in the market. Because the PlayStation 3 is one of the keenly anticipated gaming console in the world today, you can expect the PlayStation 3 to be flying out of the shelves as soon as the retail outlet opens. If you purchased a PlayStation 2 upon its official release, you know how difficult and frustrating it is to buy one. With people crowding over the shelves, it will be really difficult to get one. You would want to avoid going through this again. So, as mentioned before, in order for you to avoid going through the early holiday PlayStation shopping rush again, it is a very good idea that you should preorder or make reservations for your own PlayStation 3 in retail outlets in your local area. Or, you can always wait a little while until things settle down and you can go to the PlayStation 3 outlets without having to go through the difficulty of getting your own PlayStation 3. However, if you really want to have your own PlayStation 3 as soon as possible, you might as well call your nearest PlayStation 3 retail outlet and make reservations. This will ensure that you get a PlayStation 3 gaming console, “Game Console“, even before it is officially released in the market. Of course, you would want to, “Game Console“, know about the price of a PlayStation 3 before you buy. The latest gaming consoles tend to be expensive and you definitely want to know if it is worth your time and your money for the PlayStation 3. First of all, there are two configurations of PlayStation 3 that is going to be released in the market. These two configurations are the basic configuration and the premium configuration. The basic configuration costs US$499 while the premium configuration costs US$599. These prices will be implemented in the United States. Other countries differ in prices, such as US$480 for the basic configuration and US$580 for the premium configuration in Canada. PlayStation 3 prices vary from country to country, but you should also know what the difference is between the basic configuration and the premium configuration. In the basic configuration, you will get a 20GB upgradeable hard drive, a Blu-ray drive, HDMI port, and one Bluetooth controller. In the premium configuration, you will get a 60GB upgradeable hard drive, a Blu-ray drive, HDMI port, one Bluetooth controller, silver-colored trim, built-in Wi-Fi, and flash card readers. As you can see, the premium configuration offers more features than the basic configuration, hence the difference in prices.
