Those of us in marketing remember the times when “packaged goods” like soaps, toothpastes, shampoos, biscuits, soft drinks, cigarettes, beverages etcetera were where the best brains in marketing went. The somewhat wishful term for these sorts of categories was Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG).

The guys who marketed stuff like consumer electronics, household goods and even automobiles: stuff that people bought once in a while did not really, or so the “brand gurus” felt, get the whole thing about brands and how one built them to get people coming back to buy your product again and again, more and more often.

The consumer durable (that was what these sort of products where then called) guys just faked brand-building and so were viewed as at best second-class!

Over the last fifteen years or so things began to change. The FMCG categories became more and more consumer staples and the consumer electronics and the world of microchip-driven categories exploded.

Consequently the world of cutting-edge marketing passed to acolytes of Steve Jobs who were basically showmen who hyped something new every quarter if not every year.

The brand was a totem pole under which a circus of ever changing ‘items’ played. I like calling this category FCCG: Fast Changing Consumer Goods.

Over the last decade once again the mantle of leading marketing practice,as leaps and bounds in the access of high quality manufacturing technolgy dissolved the brand differentials based on quality and features, passed on to those who create differentials through service.

Once again it was Apple that seized the initiative. Without Apple Apps the sale of iPod and iPhones would have tapered off. This decade I like to call this age of marketing the age of Full Service Consumer Goods: FSCG

And, over the past couple of years, I believe, is emerging the world of Formal Ecosystems of Consumer Experience (FECE).

As data mining, data analysis, communication technology and consumer sophistication climbs to new levels, individuals will stop buying products or services.

Instead they will pay for life experiences and states.

And these expectations can be met only through formal coordination of a whole host of products and services.

For example tomorrow’s consumer will buy a health service that monitors his health every second wherever he is and seamlessly delivers the care he needs. A experience which only a worldwide ecosystem of monitoring device manufacturers, drug and drug delivery systems, paramedics, logistic providers, nutritionist, food suppliers, personal care suppliers and of course doctors and hospitals can supply.

Imagine what could happen as this paradigm is applied to all the major life needs: education, security, relationships, entertainment and so on.

This post is just a surface level analysis of these trends.

I believe these trends have implications for the marketer of every product and service.

I have commitment issues, but Philip Kee is one of the few men I remain loyal to. I actually feel guilty when I entertain the thought of getting my hair done elsewhere. In the case of the curls, it was either that or I just get a boring old maintenance cut to my dull, fine hair. While my best friends and very critical styling advisers insisted against it, it was Philip who took the chance. I have no regrets. My hair actually has character now!

The curls were done in honor of the wedding of one of my other close friend’s, which I somehow agreed to plan for. It was an exhilarating experience, to say the least. Weddings in the Philippines are more about the families involved than the couple, and that formula makes for a double-edged sword. At the end of the day however, it’s all about the union between two people who have found each other. Best wishes, Joy Alano and Honey Chua!

In the meantime though, I recover. I also left my more regular job teaching Europeans over the phone, so am in the strange lull at the end of the year. I am on the lookout for new rakets and am slowly organizing my tutorial services to market properly, so here’s hoping that picks up.

On the writing front, I also also been blogging at the Materia Girl tumblr account for less serious, fandom-based musings while twittering haikus. I also have a few articles up at Vibal Publications’ Philippine Online Chronicles. Since I left my more regular job, I’m hoping to focus more on the writing. Let’s see how that turns out.

Today was probably the sleepiest Monday I have ever encountered.

The morning was quiet, disregarding the usual noise my class makes when there’s no teacher to keep it in check. My homeroom teacher was absent, so there was not much to do for an hour. We had a report to do for religion class, which was next, but it was sluggish because setting up the laptops took so much time. I think that the only thing of significance that I did for classes was the Geometry long test we had after religion class. I finished early, and I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so I don’t know why several of my classmates didn’t finish the test. We had English and Chemistry after that, but since my English teacher was absent (we had a substitute, but they usually don’t do full-length discussions at any given time) and my Chemistry teacher just returned test papers, another two hours passed by groggily.

After lunch break came World History and Health. My homeroom teacher is also my History teacher, so yet another hour dragged past. It didn’t help that the substitute teacher was someone that (apparently) several people in my class had a crush on. What made it worse was that they were so obvious about it. He could tell what they were thinking. @_@ (Please, please spare me from being labeled as one of his fans.) After that, we had the graded recitations on family planning methods. It went on and on and on for so long that my group, the third (and last of the many) to report today, didn’t make it, so we’re scheduled for the week after next instead. *sigh*

This is the result of my boredom. It’s also caused me to become addicted to the lyrics of BoA’s Control.

Sometimes a design will arrive for an everyday item that’s so blindingly obvious yet revolutionary you have to wonder why nobody did it before.

Such a design is the folding plug, designed by Min-kyu Choi.

Taking inspiration from the Apple Macbook Air, which is advertised as being the ‘world’s thinnest laptop’, Min-kyu found irony in the fact that this wonder of modern design was saddled with the rather archaic and clunky UK three-pin plug:

In a breathtakingly simple but inspired design, Min-kyu has created a clever folding plug which occupies under 1/3 of the space of a conventional UK plug.  Thinner than your little finger when folded, this beautiful bit of design refactoring takes plug design forward in leaps and bounds:

As software designers, we should be actively seeking out the ‘chunky plugs’ in our world – awkward, unfriendly, approaches to interaction that have somehow become the ‘norm’.  These are the things that people put up with despite their shortcomings.  If we put the effort in, we shall and will find them.  We may even be able to come up with something significantly better.

Min-kyu deserves great credit and recognition for making such an improvement to an everyday object.  I hope that you can find your own ‘chunky plug’ and make your own mark.  After all, that’s the essence of good design – improving our everyday lives.

I’ve been reading Blackbird bySakurakouji Kanoko-sensei again. OMG THE BABY TENGUs ARE SO CUUUUUUUUUUTE-desu.

Nah, that’s not what I’m going to be talking about today. I want to talk about Blackbird, but I’ll just end up spoiling everything for people who don’t want spoilers, or I’ll mislead people who don’t know the story. xD

Today I completely missed the fact that there was nothing to back up our main discussion points in the oral discussion of The Merchant of Venice using Marxist criticism. *headdesk* Then again, I was also quite successful in coloring something I want to submit to my boss for no real reason, but I think she’ll like it anyway. I started with a pencil work of a drawing I’ll be pairing along with a recently made lyrical-type poem, but there are still some things I have to tweak to get it just right. I hope it turns out well. Ever since summer break, I’ve only seen three episodes. I fail in the most epic manner possible.
