La maggior parte degli utenti preferisce utilizzare, all’interno del proprio browser, i cosiddetti “segnalibri”, altrimenti conosciuti con la definizione di “bookmarks”.

Infatti, è proprio grazie ad essi che, in men che non si dica, ciascuno navigatore della grande rete riesce ad avere un accesso più rapido ed immediato ai siti web preferiti, senza dover necessariamente ricordare per intero l’indirizzo web ma, molto più semplicemente, il solo titolo della pagina che si ha intenzione di visitare.

Tuttavia, può accadere che uno stesso segnalibro venga inserito più di una volta, complici sia il disordine che la distrazione, o ancora che alcuni dei nostri siti web preferiti non siano più validi facendo dunque risultare il nostro elenco comprensivo di link inutili che non fanno altro che portare l’utente a confondersi.

Si tratta però di una situazione facilmente risolvibile per tutti coloro che utilizzano il celeberrimo Mozilla Firefox, poiché, proprio a questo proposito, è stato ideato un utile add-on che ha come scopo quello di controllare tutti i segnalibri salvati, individuando collegamenti morti, duplicati e cartelle vuote e cancellando in maniera semi automatica i link che andranno dunque a risultate inutili.

L’estensione in questione prende il nome di CheckPlaces, la quale, una volta installata, aggiungerà una voce al menù dei segnalibri grazie alla quale sarà possibile accedere rapidamente al pannello di controllo dell’add-on.

Tramite il pannello di controllo potremo dunque configurare agevolmente il comportamento di scansione di CheckPlaces, così da scegliere agevolmente cosa si desidera controllare e cosa no, offrendo inoltre la possibilità di escludere dei singoli segnalibri dall’operazione di verifica.

Dopo aver selezionato le opzioni di nostro interesse potremo dunque avviare il test, i cui risultati verranno tutti elencati in una finestra apposita nella quale saranno riassunti gli eventuali problemi, suddivisi per categoria, al fine di permettere all’utente di scegliere se passare alla cancellazione dei preferiti non più validi.

In sostanza, CheckPlaces costituisce un utilissima estensione per tutti coloro che dispongono di decine e decine di segnalibri ed hanno intenzione di rendere più ordinato e maggiormente gestibile il proprio browser.

Ok, eu sei que é um pouco tarde pra falar sobre isso, mas a pedidos venho aqui. Na mesma semana em que rolou uma matéria no NOIZ (pra quem não leu, é só clicar aqui) Nave a.k.a Zica da Base esteve em São Paulo, mais precisamente no dia 24/10, onde ministrou um workshop de Produção no CEU Jabaquara. Eu trabalhei nesse workshop, fotografando junto com a Janaina Castelo, apesar de que na hora da palestra eu fiquei bem sentada prestando atenção! ahuheiueaahuia… Então, muitas pessoas realmente interessadas estiveram presentes. Afinal, Nave é nada mais, nada menos que um dos melhores produtores da atualidade.
Eu penso que um grande diferencial em suas batidas são os samples sempre recortados com perfeição e  o fato dele usar Fruity Loops e conseguir um resultado/ sonoridade impecável, tanto que muitas pessoas ficam supresas ao saber que ele usa o software.

Munido do FL, alguns drum kits que até então eu nem conhecia (como Battlecat, Dj Muggs, The Roots e Quest Love), um teclado usado como controlador MIDI, e alguns discos, Nave compareceu e fez acontecer. Claro que o tempo era curto e ele teria que resumir bem o conteúdo. Legal é que ele deu dicas muito preciosas (pelo menos pra mim). Falou sobre os plugins Waves e Vst’s. Sobre compressores, e tentou explicar de uma forma simples, que ajudou até os mais leigos a entender, sem muita enrolação. Ensinou como fazer uma master básica que claro, vai exigir o empenho e boa vontade de quem quer evoluir. Mas o começo, a ‘largada’ foi explicada ali, no auditório onde o silêncio, olhos e ouvidos ficaram bem atentos a palestra. Particularmente, uma das coisas que mais gostei foi o modo como ele explicou. Não ficou apenas falando ‘Aí aqui nesse canal do sample você usa isso, no bumbo usa aquilo e nas caixas aquilo-outro.” Não. Nada dessa coisa mecânica. Ele explicou pra QUE você deve e não deve usar tal plugin. A diferença que vai fazer ou não. E sem complicar, ainda deixou bem claro que podemos conseguir muitos deles apenas procurando no Google (tem muita gente que fica regulando, e falam como se fosse quase impossível conseguir).

A equipe do Noiz providenciou tudo para que o workshop acontecesse sem problemas. Mas…o bendito Windows Vista do notebook foi meio que um ‘vilão’ e não foi possível instalar alguns plugins que teriam suas funções explicadas ali…mas tudo bem. Nos bastidores, antes do evento acontecer, o criador da batida de ‘Desabafo’, rolou alguns samples INCRÍVEIS (sério, de arrepiar) que ele já usou e que poderemos conhecer em seus futuros trabalhos que já estão por vir. Ansiedade master pra ouvir, néam? Claro, e com razão. Em meio a tantos beats, pudemos ouvir o sample da ‘E.M.I.C.I.D.A.’ que pra mim é o som mais foda da mixtape. Interessante também foi saber que na maioria dos beats, Nave ‘esconde’ o baixo do sample com filtros. Ele prefere tocar a bass line no próprio controlador MIDI, assim ficam mais ‘elegantes’ e vivas.
Mas aí que tá…e pra conseguir tocar o baixo (assim como outros timbres) sem desafinar, acertando a nota, deixar tudo bonitinho e agradável aos ouvidos? Só fuçando e treinando muito. Ou estudando, claro. Ele citou que aprendeu a tocar fuçando…depois comprou um teclado, e fez aulas de piano, mas já tinha uma noção de notas, etc etc. É, as aulas de piano com certeza o fizeram aperfeiçoar a técnica ainda mais! E claro que isso também foi recomendando no workshop! Afinal, pra quem quer produzir nada melhor que mergulhar de cabeça na música…

First, Antress has updated his Modern pack to 4.75, and with the update come some real sonic improvements in addition to a new plugin or two. He’s really getting better at what he does, I think he’s getting up there with Bootsie in terms of the quality of his releases. Maybe a little more attention to bug squashing could be in order, but they work for most people without problems and the sound quality and versatility of his pack is really nice. A dev to keep watching, for sure.

KVR had their 2009 Developer Challenge, and while all of the entries are worth checking out, there are two stand-outs that I felt I should mention here. First, from the amazing Bootsie, an analog tape simulator that rocks: FerricTDS. It can be used subtly or overtly, and it’s really just (as usual) a pretty astounding freebie, easily on par with commercial tape sims. The second stand-out in the DC ‘09 lineup is HybridReverb, combining IR and algorithmic into one extremely attractive package. It’s not only free, it’s also open source, so free-as-in-freedom software fans take note. As they say it’s not an over-the-top or flashy reverb plugin, but rather an excellent way to exert subtle control over the ambiance of your tracks (provided, of course, you have quality IRs to start with; they have a sizable library of good ones on their main site, but they are not free for commercial usage, unlike the software itself).

A developer of whom I was not aware until today, TerryW, released a plugin on KVR called ReLife, which through some sort of amazing voodoo magic can take over-compressed, squashed material and breathe dynamic transients and separation back into it. As the developer says, don’t expect miracles if there is a lot of distortion from digital clipping, but take it from me, on a lot of material it sounds awfully miraculous. I wish I could post some examples of squashed commercial releases that I’ve processed with it, but as it’s a free plugin perhaps you can do the same yourself. There are a lot of applications for such a plugin in the studio – processing mastered tracks to reinvigorate them with some of the subtleties that loud mastering can eliminate is just one thing you can get from this this simple-to-use plugin. The GUI is just a bypass button and a post-gain control, with an input and output level meter, but the magic under the hood is very impressive.

BlueCatAudio has released a new and improved freeware pack of plugins with very broad cross-platform support, including (beta) RTAS versions, definitely worth checking out! I haven’t got deep in with these at all yet but my initial impressions are positive, this seems like a useful package.

I’ve been helping a gentleman named Efflam dial in some plugins he’s released lately, including the excellent freeware Sansamp G2 emulation, NoAmp, as well as the extremely affordable and quite versatile Fuzz Face simulation, Kung Fuzz. I think he has a good philosophy, keep products simple and make them function as well as possible at achieving their exact goals. His other products include an excellent non-sampled, physical modeling technology Wurlitzer virtual instrument named Blue Reeds which is again quite affordable, as well as a free Pianet-like virtual instrument called Glue Reeds. He’s still busy at work with an upcoming Fender Blender emulation and I’m helping him test something very cool right now which might be of a great deal of interest to musicians, I’ll update when I can.

Gain-heads rejoice, joining LePou’s excellent ENGL preamp sim comes a new, different take on the same idea: TSE X30 testimonials from ENGL lovers over at the Andy Sneap forums suggest that between the two of these plugins, there are a lot of people who won’t be needing their physical preamps any longer at least when it comes to recording. As usual with preamp sims you’ll need to use external cabinet simulation to get a good recorded sound, there are plenty of options available these days.

And work continues on AcmeBarGig’s G-Spot suite, he’s been keeping me updated on its progress and I’ve had several versions which show significant progress toward getting it ready for public usage. I’ll try to get some clips up of the most recent version soon. He’s issued an interesting and perhaps provocative statement over at the GuitarAmpModeling forums inviting commercial software developers to join him in releasing a freeware amp head. Judging from the linked thread, it seems he’s talked with a number of developers who all have great ideas, and he’s trying to get a big community effort going so that some of those great ideas can be realized for the benefit of everyone. I personally wonder how many commercial software makers are going to be willing to get involved, but from what I can tell from that thread it looks like he’s getting some bites, so who knows? Marc Gallo, the man behind StudioDevil, has pledged his support (which isn’t all that surprising, given that he’s had BritishValveCustom out for some time as a freeware product – maybe a new freebie from him will let him flex his muscles some more, he’s a heck of a programmer) and I’m not sure but it looks like Peavey might be interested as well. We’ll see how that goes, I’ll be keeping an eye on things and try to keep you guys updated.

Oh, I almost forgot – Native Instruments has made the current beta version of Guitar Rig 4 publicly available, with quite a number of things in it that seem to me to indicate that really this was their vision for Guitar Rig 4 when it shipped but some things took a little longer to finalize. No problem, happens in the software world all the time, that’s what patches are for – and letting the public get in on the beta means that everyone who just wants to have the most current version with the cool added features (a new amp, master effects section, and others) can get it, while folks mainly concerned with stability and who have more patience can hold off ’til it’s finalized. Nice thinking, Native.

That’s all for now, to all my American readers happy Thanksgiving – I will probably be somewhat out of pocket next week as my wife and I will be going to visit family to celebrate the holiday, but I’ll still be watching things and I’ll try to have an update here or there. Technology was suppose to save us time!  And that is true for many processes we encounter every day – crunching numbers, finding directory information, researching, word processing, taking pictures and sharing them, etc., technology has made life much easier.

But . . . . go outside the main stream services and products just a little and . . . . BANG!  . . . . your time disappears into a black hole of technological marvels all telling you what each widget can do.  Great! 

Lots of great programmers coming up with lots of new tools.  What they don’t tell you, are the glitches with applying each one.  You have to go here and you have to go there and you have to ask this person and that other support person and then you have to ask more questions (because they know their stuff but you don’t know what they know) - the time consumption is horrendous!  And, of course, you find out in articles that if you happen to pick the wrong basic thing and combine it with another wrong basic thing, you’ll have to start all over again!!! 

The industry is so segmented and each component is so specialized, there’s no one out there thinking through the business aspects and linking everything.  – oh – correction – there could be – but another chunk of hours trying to find them because you’re likely not using the right terminology! . . . .I could be asking for an orange but I was suppose to ask for a navel orange . . . !!!!

Yes, it’s okay to have specializations – it’s necessary – the same as a mall – you have a clothing store, a shoe store, a drug store, a grocery store but they are all linked into one common thread – shopping and there’s a path from store to store.  Stores display their wares – warts and all – and store people help you figure out if something is right or wrong for you.

For instance, someone told me to start a blog on WordPress so I did and I have found it to be a very interesting process.  Because I’m learning, I have been doing a lot of research and am now starting to understand how I turn blogging into an on-line business. 

So, I think up an idea, I want to try it only to find out that I cannot do that on .com but I need to go now to .org of the same name company - huh????  For non-techie’s, this simply doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.  Why not just simply include it in upgrades and make it seamless for the consumer.

So now I have to figure out the difference between the two, find a web host, download .org software, and I’m on my own for all kinds of things like controlling spam.   Makes no sense at all to me.

If I were the company, I’d make it possible to add on some widgets on the sidebar the same as Blogger does – I don’t have to go to Blogger.org to do it – and I still get all the same coverage as just the regular old Blogger – simple – easy! 

I have spent hours now talking to AWebber who are so terrific in explaning technology easily and making their services so user friendly, it’s incredible!  If all online services studied AWebber about how to explain their to services to clients and how to make their product easy to use as well as how to use their product with other products, then all of this process would be simple.  AWebber know their stuff and are willing to help – they know they are the technology experts and the people using their services are often not nor do clients have the time to “figure it all out”.

So, the moral of the story – technology can chew up time like there is no tomorrow.  If you are entering into a new part of the technology world, expect to spend a huge amount of time sorting what’s what and practically becoming a techie yourself. 

It’s like this – getting into new technology is like buying a car in parts – you have to research and pick your own body, engine, drive shaft, transmission, ignition, etc  and understand what each part does, figure out if they are compatible and then you have to put it together yourself, do the mechanical repairs yourself and monitor your car with all kinds of gadgets to make sure it’s all working properly!  Oh, yes, and you’d have to know little tricks too like adding the transmission fluid – if you didn’t know these tiny little facts that likely no parts person would tell you, your transmission won’t work!  If anyone had to buy a car this way, there would be few people buying cars – in fact, the car industry would likely never sold a one!

They say, well, there are techies who can help you.  Ah . . . . but . . . . that’s a whole other story altogether – which one?  for what purpose?  Unlike a car, there is no car mechanic who knows all the systems, how they are all work together and how to fix problems.  No, in technology, even for a small thing like a small website, you need a designer, a graphic designer, a SEO expert,  and the list goes on for just a simple website.

  Yes, you say, well get one already made.  Really?  Then, you have to figure out if the the company which is offering these “ready mades” will stay in business, are they reputable, do they offer large enough bandwidth, the amount of downtime they experience or not and the list goes on and on and on and on.  And, when you do arrive at the be all and end all of prefab websites, then you have to figure out all the plugins, shopping cards, merchant accounts, entering new products, creating new descriptions, uploading pictures (& hosting picture), and, there again, the list goes on and on and on.  See a Yahoo store – so popular today and some of the best prefabs you can get  - but it takes 1Choice 4 You – a whole company – to help you put it together properly so it all works as well as possible!  Great looking stores – prefab – but, again, it chews up time like mad!  Yes, it’s true – you can go to forums and blogs and get help – guess what???  More time is chewed up finding the good forums/blogs/etc. . . . .

And that time doesn’t include all the other things you need to do in order to give it your best shot at creating a viable business – business plans, product sourcing, capitalization, newsletters, customer service, etc. etc. etc. 

You say, well, if you had a brick and mortar store, you’d have to do leasehold improvements too – maybe – and once done, it was done – not so with websites – you continually have to work on them and keep them fresh.  Then you have to be connected to Twitter, Facebook, LindedIn – then you have webcasts, podcasts, webinars, etc.  And you have to intergrate all the old fashioned stuff too into your business plan - and both kinds – traditional paper and untraditional online advertising and promotion!

We are so connected to the internet now and the industry is still so “unconnected”, the challenges for the average person are overwhelming not to mention trying to understand lingo and instructions that don’t work because they missed a few steps that “you, the customer, should have known”. 

Lots of great people in the industry – great online help in some cases – but if they only could sit where I sit and so many other people are sitting, they would be amazed at the maze created by the internet and technology.  It’s no wonder that many people just sparingly use the internet for find a phone number or get an answer to a question but to actually use the internet in any other way for most people is very, very difficult and time consuming.

For instance, if my blogging software company just made a “mall” type service as its business, it could be making a lot of money.  A person shouldn’t have to know from the beginning that there are 2 different categories of  – .com and .org and that each allow the user to do different things.  Make it one company – one thing - then offer people options as people who choose to grow with the software can take advantage of. 

Yes, the Support at has been terrific in answering questions but after 3 days I still have no idea what the transfer will take in order to do what I want to do.  It should be seamless – what I want to do is so simple, it should be seamless and should really take no more than a few clicks to accomplish – it’s just a matter of adding an opt in box onto my blog – simple.  Over 3 days of trying to get that done and I’m still nowhere!  All I wanted was to put an opt in box on my blog from AWebber!  That’s all – and all of this for just that!

So . . . small business people . . . be prepared for a long haul or throw money at it – and, then, again, you’ll have to make sure the money goes to the right people to do right things for what you want – in addition to just regular ‘getting into business’ processes.  Prepare for one heck of a journey!

Die niederländische Softwareschmiede FabFilter hat wieder zugeschlagen! Diesmal mit dem parametrischen Equalizer-Plugin Pro-Q. Warum dieses geniale Plugin in keiner “Sammlung” fehlen darf, zeigt das folgende Review!

Der FabFilter Pro-Q

Oberfläche und Gestaltung

Pro-Q kommt im gewohnten FabFilter-Design. Ganz oben die Undo-/Redo-Buttons, der A/B- und der Copy-Button, sowie die Presetverwaltung. Anschließend folgt der Bereich fürs Auge, die Visualisierung der Frequenzbänder. Weiter unten sind dann noch einige Regler und Parameter gefolgt von weiteren Einstellungsmöglichkeiten, die sich in einer Leiste am unteren Rand befinden. Das Plugin hat einen schönen mattschwarzen Hintergrund, ansonsten ist der Equalizer sehr bunt um die einzelnen Frequenzbänder voneinander farblich zu unterscheiden.

Features und Klang

Im Vordergrund der FabFilter Plugins steht immer das besonders einfache Handling. So auch bei Pro-Q. Alles lässt sich bequem mit der Maus einstellen, die Regler werden eigentlich nur noch für ganz präzise Millimeterarbeiten benötigt. So lassen sich z.B. mit einem Rechtsklick der Maus auf die Pegelspitze des Frequenzbandes alle übrigen Parameter einstellen und sogar der Q-Faktor lässt sich mit Hilfe des Mausrades konfigurieren!!

Auch das gesamte Band lässt sich nach oben, unten, links oder rechts im “Koordinatensystem” bei gedrückter linker Maustaste verschieben.

Der Frequenzbereich von Pro-Q geht von 10Hz bis 30kHz, entspricht also nicht dem Standard der meisten EQs (20Hz bis 20kHz), sondern geht hier noch ein Stück weiter.
Der Gain-Wert lässt sich um bis zu 30dB vergrößern oder verkleinern und auch der Q-Faktor ist mit Werten von 0,025 bis 40 sehr komfortabel einstellbar!

Jedes einzelne Frequenzband lässt sich außerdem ganz einfach ausschalten (Bypass) oder gleich ganz löschen. Auch die Anzahl der gleichzeitigen Frequenzbänder ist enorm. Im Test habe ich bis zu 24(!) Bänder in eine Instanz von Pro-Q bekommen. Was natürlich übertrieben ist, aber es zeigt wie wie fein und präzise mit Pro-Q gearbeitet werden kann!

Auch das Editieren von mehreren Bändern gleichzeitig ist für das Equalizer-Plugin kein Problem. Einfach mit der Maus einen Rahmen um den gewünschten Bereich ziehen und anschließend ein Frequenzband nehmen und so die anderen mitbewegen!

Auf einige Besonderheiten die FabFilter in Pro-Q eingebaut hat, möchte ich an dieser Stelle auch noch kurz eingehen. Da wäre z.B. die Möglichkeit mit Hilfe des “Stereo Placement”-Buttons ein Frequenzband in den linken und rechten Kanal aufzusplitten. Außerdem ist da noch der eingebaute Spectrum-Analyzer, der das eingehende oder das ausgehende Audiosignal (nach der Bearbeitung mit Pro-Q) anzeigen kann. Auch die verschiedenen Filtertypen wie Tiefpass- und Hochpass sowie High Shelf und Low Shelf sind in Pro-Q auswählbar. (Mehr zu den Filtertypen findet ihr hier: delamar)

Das i-Tüpfelchen ist aber das Linear-Phase Processing, das man in fünf Stufen (Zero Latency, Linear Phase – Low Latency, Linear Phase – Medium Latency, Linear Phase – High Latency, Linear Phase – Maximum Latency) einstellen kann, um so auftretenden Phasenfehlern, die man ja vor allem den digitalen EQs nachsagt, entgegenzusteuern.

Fazit:

Die beiden Jungs von FabFilter haben mit ihrem neuen Plugin Pro-Q wieder einmal ganze Arbeit geleistet! Müsste man Pro-Q kurz zusammenfassen, kämen mir sofort folgende Wörter in den Sinn: Einfach, komfortabel und qualitativ absolut hochwertig!
Dafür spricht nicht nur das geniale Bedienkonzept oder das benutzerfreundliche, sofort durchschaubare Design des Plugins, sondern auch die Möglichkeiten die Pro-Q zu einem One-for-All-EQ machen!

Mein Tipp deshalb: Demo herunterladen, ausprobieren, begeistert sein!

One of the reasons why Chrome has been stuck in fourth place: extensions — Chrome hasn’t got them.

Or more precisely, Chrome (Chrome) doesn’t have them yet. At least, not officially. If you ask most Firefox (Firefox) fans the main reason they won’t switch to Chrome, a good majority of them will probably cite its lack of extensions. Dacă te întrebi la ce or fi bune plugin-urile astea jQuery, îți voi spune eu: îți permite extinderea întregii librării jQuery prin adăugarea de noi metode și funcții la aceasta. De exemplu, ai putea crea un plugin care, printr-un singur apel, va parcurge toate link-urile unei pagini, și la fiecare link către un fișier PDF va adăuga o iconiță descriptivă. La momentul actual, acolo sunt 3684 de plugin-uri! Deci idei sunt cu tonele, și tot apar plugin-uri zi de zi. Așa că, ori poți sta să cauți plugin-ul care-ți trebuie, ori poți învăța să creezi propriile plugin-uri, lucru despre care voi discuta în următoarele câteva articole.

Să intrăm în pâine!

Pentru început, e nevoie de puțină teorie interesantă. În caz că nu știai deja, jQuery e renumit pentru faptul că poate fi folosit cu ajutorul unui singur caracter: simbolul dolar ($). De puține ori, însă, vei da peste probleme folosind simbolul $, fiindcă nu este singurul framework care face uz de acest simbol. Așa că, pentru a evita conflicte, când este cazul, se poate folosi cuvântul “jQuery“. De exemplu:

jQuery("a").fadeIn();
jQuery.variabila = 2;

Acum să îți spun și care sunt acele puține cazuri când pot apărea conflicte cu simbolul $: când creezi plugin-uri, și când folosești încă un framework împreună cu jQuery, de exemplu ExtJS + jQuery. Știind acum aceste lucruri, să începem cu plugin-urile! Pentru a putea crea plugin-uri, e nevoie să știi jQuery, evident, și care sunt obiectele extensibile din jQuery:

1. jQuery
   • se ocupă cu procesarea internă
   • extinde metode (în alte limbaje de programare sunt cunoscute ca metode statice, sau metode de clasă)
2. jQuery.fn
   • se ocupă de elemente HTML și interacțiunile dintre ele
   • extinde funcții (în alte limbaje de programare sunt cunoscute ca metode de instanță)

Ca să fiu sigur că nu mă vei pierde, îți voi explica ce reprezintă metodele și funcțiile. Dacă ai deja experiență în programarea orientată pe obiecte, poți sări peste paragraful acesta. Deci, metodele pot fi apelate direct, fără a instanția o clasă. Funcțiile, pe de altă parte, pot fi apelate doar asupra unui obiect ce reprezintă o instanță a unei clase. Dacă nu știi nici ce reprezintă instanțierea, e cazul să te oprești aici și să iei un tutorial de POO în C++ sau orice alt limbaj vrei.

Știind acum ce obiecte jQuery pot fi extinse, voi crea un simplu plugin care afișează un mesaj la încărcarea unor elemente HTML. Apelul va fi simplu:

$.mesaj("mesaj la comanda");     //metodă
$("div").mesaj("m-am incarcat"); //funcție

Și acum iată codul, trivial de altfel:

jQuery.mesaj = function(msg) {
   alert(msg);

//codul pentru funcție

}

Ți se pare complicat ? Dacă da, e grav, fiindcă în următoarele articole se mai complică, fiindcă voi discuta despre:

• variabile locale și globale
• ascunderea variabilelor
• orientarea pe obiecte
• setările plugin-urilor
• funcții cu opțiuni și parametri
• template-urile cele mai utilizate pentru plugin-uri
• și în final, o listă de guidelines, adică un mic ghid

If a blog stats are presented in this fashion, the numbers look like a block of meaningless information.

I know this may be hard to swallow, but that is the truth.

Let me just backtrack a little bit and elaborate before someone starts calling me names.

1. Currently, there is no method which can claim to produce web statistics with 100% accuracy. And the resulting numbers are dependent on what methodology is applied to generate those numbers. The fact that even Google has to explain the terms used in its analytics and how the Google numbers are calculated shows the difficulty in coming up with commonly accepted standards. You may wish to check out this page as an additional background.

2. Without being critical, WordPress.com in its Support page provided not enough information as to what the Blog Stats numbers are. Perhaps, to others the numbers need no explanation? Or perhaps there is another related Support page which I missed? I certainly don’t have the answer to that.

3. Again, without being critical, the same WordPress.com Support page says that we, the bloggers, can choose which word to use in describing the numbers. The two popular words, according to WP, are: “hits” (which is the default label in the Blog Stats widget dialog box), and “views”, the label “views” being more consistent with the label “Total Views”, used in the Blog Stats Dashboard | Summary Table.

4. The use of “hits” was okay, and even a buzzword, many many years ago. Is it still okay to use “hits” these days without defining what you mean by “hits”?

5. In technical terms, “hits” is not “visits” nor “views”. “Hits” are the number of files served when a web page (no distinction here between WP “post” and “page”) is requested from a server. A graphic, an icon, a banner and all sorts of files that make up a page are, technically, “hits”. For example, when you opened this page, the server’s log should have recorded at least 40 “hits” just on the bullets, icons and images alone displayed on this page.

Given this background, where does that leave us if we want to show off our WP blogs stats?

You may have other ideas, but right now I can think of only two things we can do to correctly show off our WP blog stats:

1. Stick to using “Views” to label those numbers. I will not use labels like “hits” or “visits” if I were you. In the absence of additional information from WP, these labels may be inaccurate information. You may be describing the numbers something that they are not. In the Blog Stats dashboard, the numbers are labeled “views”, remember?

2. Disclose the period covered by the stats. Again, the numbers are pretty much meaningless unless the period to which they relate is described. Here is an example to show how futile and frustrating it is to read blog stats crafted using the Blog Stats widget:

If you are the owner of this blog and you know that your blog stats are for 12 months, no problem. You know what your stats stand for. But if you are a visitor of this blog and you don’t have that same information, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? What do these 3,000 views represent? Are these yesterday’s views? Or perhaps, last week’s? Or last month’s? Or, last 12 months’? And how do I compare the “popularity” of this blog with another blog with only 1,500 views but I know that this other blog has been online for only 2 months?

Any suggested wordings?

By the way, I am not fond of showing off my site’s stats whether here at WP or in my company’s websites. We also do not display in my company’s websites any stats counter or meter. But if I were to show off my blog stats on the sidebar, I would probably disclose the numbers this way:

or something like:

A little bit long, you think? But no one will argue the suggested wordings are not misleading. And they are easy to understand.

Again, in a worst-case scenario too, you can present a screenshot of your blog stats dashboard plus some other information about your blog to prove that the blog stats you are claiming are factual. That is, if someone starts questioning your numbers and you need to show proof. About your friends being very pleased? I am sure your friends would be happy to come to your rescue and say they are pleased with your blog!

End Notes: The WP Blog Stats inside my blog’s dashboard is an excellent tracking and management tool. With the Blog Stats, I learn a lot about my blog. But when used as a widget and without additional information about the numbers displayed on the sidebar, the stats are meaningless. Did I step on sensitive toes with this post? I hope not. Nueva versión en periodo de prueba únicamente para 32 bits, pues la versión para 64 bits aún sigue en periodo alpha desde julio de este año.

Para instalarla hay que tener en cuenta que es una versión en desarrollo y puede causar problemas, aunque a mi me va bien. En el ejemplo siguiente la instalación la he hecho sobre una instalación en limpio de Ubuntu 9.10 . Desconozco dónde esté ubicado en otras versiones o distribuciones, pero podéis verlo en el buscador de archivos si estáis en Gnome menú Lugares–> Buscar archivos–> libflashplayer.so –> Buscar en todos los archivos, si obtenemos más de un resultado debemos desechar los enlaces simbólicos, descritos en el navegador de archivos con una flecha en semicírculo .

Para instalar el plugin abrimos la terminal y nos bajamos el archivo tar.gz de la web de Adobe:

wget http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer10/flashplayer10_1_p1_linux_111709.tar.gz

Nos situamos en el directorio donde descargamos el archivo tar.gz anteponiendo el comando cd, espacio y sitio de descarga, en mi caso lo he descargado dentro de mi carpeta personal marcada en rojo (cambiadla por la vuestro usuario y/o destino) :

cd /home/noctuido

Descomprimimos el archivo:

tar xvfz flashplayer10_1_p1_linux_111709.tar.gz

Nos situamos dentro de la carpeta:

cd install_flash_player_10_linux

Iniciamos la instalación:

sudo ./flashplayer-installer

Borramos el actual plugin de flash

sudo rm /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so

Y copiamos el nuevo plugin al mismo directorio (cambiar la ruta inicial marcada en rojo del descomprimido por la vuestra):

sudo cp /home/noctuido/install_flash_player_10_linux/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/

Ya deberíamos tener el nuevo plugin, para comprobarlo escribimos about:plugins en la barra de direcciones del navegador.

Una vez satisfecha la instalación podemos eliminar los archivos de descarga y el descomprimido:

rm flashplayer10_1_p1_linux_111709.tar.gz

Sustituir la ruta dónde os lo descargásteis ya que el ejemplo es  para dónde la descargué yo (marcado en rojo):

rm -rf /home/noctuido/install_flash_player_10_linux/

Ainda falando sobre melhorias no seu blog, Fabio ricotta autor do MestreSEO (Site votado a  estratégias por trás dos grandes portais e empresas na Internet)encontrou um plugin que possibilita a adição de códigos PHP dentro de páginas do seu WordPress

1. Para instalar o plugin, faça o download: PHP no WordPress
2. Renomeie este arquivo para phpexec.php e envie para a pasta /wp-content/plugins
3. Ative-o no painel de administração.

Para usar o plugin basta adicionar o código PHP entre as tags <phpcode> … </phpcode>

If you have ever tried using Flock, it has some cool features. I find myself wanting more though. I use Seesmic as my twitter/Facebook interface and it work beautifully and I was hoping that with Flock they would have improved on their interface within the browser and sadly I was wrong. For those who haven’t tried it, the best way I could describe it is an attempt to bring usability into a browser that plug-ins and apps are usually used for. From within the browser you can set up photo/video uploader, blogs, twitter Facebook, and al. The concept is brilliant but it lags in updates to the twitter client and the photo uploader bogs my old machine down. So I suggest using good old Firefox and installing the plugins (or not) to get what you need the way you want it.

Flock in concept is a great idea, for me it just slows me down. Good effort, but I will pass, again.

Zwar ist der OP-X Player nur eine Art Sampler mit ein paar wenigen Reglern und Einstellungsmöglichkeiten, dennoch wird er mit den gleichen Presets, d.h. mit der gleichen Soundbibliothek, wie seine “großen Brüder” ausgeliefert. Wem es also reicht nur auf die fertigen Sounds zugreifen zu können, der ist mit dem OP-X Player für unglaubliche 39$ bestens bedient!
