It’s the morning after Thanksgiving (I would like to point out I am Australian, not American…Not that there’s anything wrong with that) got me thinking about how one takes to living in a  different country. I don’t mean making the change from Australia to New Zealand or America to Canada. I mean a big cultural change.

I live in Florence, Italy if those of you following haven’t caught that yet.

There are a tonne of Americans living the Rennaisance city as they seek the knowledge of Art history and fashion and what it will bring them in the future. Laying in bed last night listening to the drunken taunts and screaming coming from the mouths of American early twenty-somethings made me realise there are a lot of people who don’t really want the “cultural embrace”. I have been living here for 2 years, I speak Italian, I live with Italians, I HAD an Italian girlfriend my best friends are Italian. I didn’t know anyone when I arrived and I didn’t speak a word of Italian apart from “grazie” in a terrible accent. I would like to say, that after putting in the effort I have certainly embraced the culture.

My flatmate (American…… And please don’t think this post is anti-American) locks himself in his room 24/7. Eats in his room, generally goes into the kitchen when there’s no-one else around, never makes the effort to interact or give Italian life a chance. It’s a shame …. But he seems more like a lodger than a flatmate. We had a big lunch with 8 people including him and he didn’t say thank you at the end, nor did he contribute to the cooking, buying of the food, the conversation or the cleaning at the end. When the lunch was finished he went straight back into his room, needless to say it didn’t go down well with anyone in the house. It makes me wonder what the point is of coming over and living in an Italian house, he is honestly better off living with other Americans, not that it’s a bad thing- I just think it would suit him better and he’d be happy and a lot less awkward.

It’s funny, the saying “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” rings home in every sense when living abroad.

I have never lost my Australian pride or patriotism but living in Italy I would like to think I am having an Italian experience.

If I can give anyone a tip…. For what it’s worth from someone who has lived in 5 different countries. Be yourself, never let that change, but embrace everything your adopted country has to offer. Don’t go back home with a sour taste in your mouth thinking that you could have done more or that eating a piece of pizza counts as “a cultural experience”. There’s no such thing as “locals only” and if you make the effort they will treat you like a local. If you don’t- you will certainly feel a lot more outside the circle than what you need to be.

I did a little bit of C and D.. honestly I don’t mind being single in SL.. except for the moments when I’m feeling all cute (as I am right now) and there isn’t a boy to nuzzle (virtually at least) my neck and tell me “you did good babe”. And I miss that at times… but very few and far in between I assure you! I will say that what I miss most about a relationship, RL and SL.. is that awesome connection where it’s just lots of talking, flirting and giggling. When someone just get’s you and you stay up til all hours of the night because sleep would just cut into the time you have. WTF, I think I just revealed to all my readers exactly how mushy and girly I REALLY am? DOH!

So check this dress, so incredibly sweet isn’t it? It’s by Artilleri but is no longer available, I didn’t realize that until after I put this look together and did the pictures, I feel a teensy bad, but next post, I think I’ll do an Artilleri that’s still available, so my bad, that was major fail on my part! I’m big into mixing textures, and it’s funny how some things just work! When I saw the neckscarf at Decoy a few months back during their massive sale, I just couldn’t pass it up. It’s very elegant in a way, and draws attention to your neck and face, which is always a good thing!  A scarf so pretty needs a updo to properly show it off, so I pulled out of my massive inventory of hairs this very sweet style from Dernier Cri.  I love the flawless sweep of the bangs and wished my hair in RL would behave like that!

   So when I logged in today to find Truth’s new Cyndi Hair… I just knew I had to put together a fabulous 80’s look. And Im also going to confess to that the entire time ive been getting dressed, taking pics, making pics more pretty and writing this post i have been listening to the 80’s station on the television. Right now Conga is on, by Gloria Estefan..and Im singing. “come on shake your body, baby do that conga, you know you can control yourself any longer…feel the rhythm of the music getting stronger” But, I Digress… back to the post..

Jag är säkerligen inte ett unikum gällande en önskan att kunna ha en blogg där jag ventilera och konverserar. Syftet är för mig, såsom för troligtvis många andra att framför allt, just kunna ventilera och få utlopp för de egna tankarna. En sorts självrannsakan, kring det jag gör, tänker, vill och mer konkret, vad jag har gjort, hur tänkte jag och slutligen, vart jag är på väg. Är det sedan så att det jag skriver och delar med mig utav intresserar och lockar så är det givetvis en stor plus-stjärna mitt på!

Befann mig igår på ett seminarium om ledarskap och en intressant flik som dök upp under samtalet var en del staplar kring medvetande om vad man vill uppnå. Där jämfördes medvetandet kring detta hos ungdomar kontra äldre. Det som var talande och trist att inse var att som yngre har människan många drömmar och vision, men att dessa avtog med ålder, uppenbarligen. Orsakerna till det är säkerligen många, allt ifrån att vi kanske blir mer och mer “realistiska” till att vi blir mer pessimistiska. Oavsett vad eller vilket så är borde det icke vara på det viset.

Vart ville jag komma med den lilla mellanparagrafen? Jo, att denna bloggs främsta syfte kommer att vara ett medel för min egen del att finna nya visioner, nya vägar och nya mål att uppnå. Jag anser mig vara en driven och innovativ person och intalar mig att jag har en plikt gentemot mig själv att göra så mycket av det som möjligt.

Härigenom så vill jag kunna spy ur mig tankar som ansar ligger och gnager och tär på själen. Ett lavemang för mitt inre, korta och litterära spa-sessioner för anden inom..

Jag skall försöka fatta mig kort, inledningsvis. I min blogg kommer säkert en hel del kontroverser att dyka upp, jag tenderar (har jag med åren förstått) att ibland ha en del snäva åsikter om saker och ting, något som jag gärna inte döljer.
För de åsikter jag besitter är utifrån en övertygelse om deras rättighet till existens. Vissa gånger får jag givetvis komma till insikt att jag har fel, då reviderar jag gärna och går vidare, än mer stärkt i mina övertygelser och åsikter. Men att utan diskussion och övertygelse så reviderar jag inte mina åsikter enbart för att “passa” min omnejd.

Idag vid lunchtid fick jag ett trevligt telefonsamtal. Jag kan ännu inte berätta vad det handlade om men det gjorde mig väldigt glad och jag kan avslöja att det handlade om min blogg och mat/recept. Om det blir som det blir så kommer det att ske i början av nästa år. Får antagligen besked om nån vecka hur det blir och då lovar jag att berätta.

Sitter just nu och tittar på Arga snickaren i kanal 5. Ett av de program som jag följer varje vecka, antingen direkt på TV eller också i efterhand via www.kanal5.se. Klockan nio börjar Pernilla Wahlgrens julprogram i TV4 Plus så jag lär bli sittande framför TV:n till klockan blir 22.

TRISTAR sent over an early Thanksgiving present yesterday and supplied me with a blaster of their new 2009 Prospects + product.  You can find these at many retail outlets such as Wal-Mart and Target.  For full hobby boxes be sure to check your local card shop or favorite online dealer.

Design:

TRISTAR has really improved the design of this year’s Prospects +.  Last year’s base cards seemed a little over done with the chrome like finish and what looked from a distance like a die cut design.  ’09 Prospects + returns to a simpler design that contains color in the background versus just plain white which has been done before.

Price:

You should be able to find these blasters for between $10.00 and $20.00 at places like Wal-Mart and Target.  That seems about right for the average blaster box.

Hit Quality:

You can’t expect to get a ton of hits, if any, from a blaster box.  Have blasters been known to yield big hits in the past?  Sure.  Is it possible to pull autographs and relics from blasters?  Absolutely.  But it is much harder than your standard hobby box, especially a decent hit.  Hobby boxes of ‘09 Prospects + yield 9 hits on average.  Blasters on the other hand don’t guarantee anything.  You get one pack with 20 cards.  I didn’t pull any autographs or relics but thats what you expect from a blaster.  I like the Stephen Strasburg Crystal Ballers which are retail exclusive and can be found in 5 different color variations.  I pulled the green version from my blaster.  For some reason they remind me of an insert that could have been pulled from the 90’s.  They also have that sketch card look to them.  Be sure to look for Obak update cards within this product too.  Obak was probably my favorite retro product this year.

Overall:

Overall, I give this product 3 baseballs out of 5 (1=poor & 5=perfect).  Prospects + will always be a great contender against other prospect based products like Bowman.  If your looking for guaranteed hits, I would suggest spending the extra money for a hobby box.  These blasters are great for that prospect collector who is looking for that quick fix.

As the bodies and body image of women has begun to shift, I think it’s safe to say that “plus sized” is no longer a dirty word in the minds of intelligent, stylish women. However, we too have some fashion principles we ought to follow in order to maximize our curves and minimize our faux pas. Here are a few pearls of wisdom that I have picked up over time as a size 14 stunner.

Prints are a Plus: Those mini-polka dots may not be doing you any favors after all. When plus-sized women where teenst patterns, we actually look larger and oftentimes much more frumpy. Due to our size, we have the ability to carry off larger prints without them swallowing us whole. So, go for that skirt with the large floral print or the blouse with the artsy stripes! But, some style rules still apply; be sure to steer clear of horizontal stripes. Also, work with color-black will always be a great hue to have, but the rest of the spectrum could use some love too.

Show Your Stuff: Think that a boatneck top will minimize your large chest? Think again. High necklines will make you look a bit too busty and take away from that fantastic figure. Just think about it: there are women who will pay thousands of dollars to have a cup size that you have naturally! So, toss those boatnecks and stock up on v-neck and scoop neck tops.

Tailor-Made: When gaping button holes or waistlines attack, simply buy  the item to fit the largest part of you and then find a skilled tailor that will snip away the difference. Sure, it is an extra financial investment, but wearing clothing that fits you perfectly without any peek-a-boo action will make it worth every penny.

Cutting It Close: Although fashion magazines seems to constantly recommend a-line skits for larger hips and derrieres, don’t completely write off pencil skits. When paired with waist-defining tops, they can actually create a knockout hourglass figure. Just add a pair of killer heels to show off those gorgeous calves and you’re golden.

Stretch the Imagination: Stretch materials such as jersey are our friends as they skim over curves and smooth unsightly bulges. But, they do not give you license to buy clothes two sizes too small in hopes that it will magically fit. Buy stretch clothes in your size and let the material work its magic.

Ayer acabó el I Festival de Series de Madrid, y aunque no se pueda decir que ha sido un éxito rotundo, pero sí se pueda considerar que por haber sido detallado a última hora  y promocionado un poco con prisa, ha concluido con un sabor agridulce.

Por un lado, las series han sido emitidas en versión original y en formato 16:9, y alta definición (con subtítulos en español, claro está). La sala acondicionada en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid era cuanto menos impresionante, rodeados del esplandor de siglos pasados en la misma sala, e impregnados de la belleza arquitectónica. Un lugar adecuado a la categoría del evento.

Sin embargo, no todo lo organizado ha tenido éxito. Los talleres del sábado tenían una ocupación de la mitad de capacidad de la sala, pero esto mejoró el domingo con la conferencia de Iker Jiménez, acerca de la ficción en televisión, donde se produjo un lleno. Las series han tenido sus más y sus menos, ya que tras una leve acogida en las series nocturnas del jueves y viernes, el sábado fue un día algo más abundante en público, y el domingo hasta la medianoche se puede considerar que se mantuvo el público cuativo.

Aunque, l I Festival de Series en Madrid no ha estado a las expectativas que se crearon, por temas de organización, establecer esta forma de promoción abre nuevas posibilidades a las series en televisión, de crear nuevo público y de fidelizar a ese que ha mutado a descargas y streaming. Este aspecto positivo es el que destacaría por encima de todo, y probaría para el año que viene con un horario menos nocturno (la última sesión acababa cerca de la una de la madrugada) y daría una promoción más anticipada al evento, empezando un par de meses antes teniendo la web operativa, no como ha ocurrido en esta ocasión.

Por lo tanto, y desde corresponde, Digital + ha organizado un trabajo novedoso hasta ahora, que si lo cuidan, puede darlo muchas alegrías en el futuro a la plataforma de pago que anda algo mal estos últimos años.

I’m not one for holidays; they, too, make me sad, but I am one for love. I’m so thankful for my family, and for everyone -good or bad, that has touched my life.

The New Plus/Minus

Hockey is the ultimate team sport. The only thing that matters at the end of sixty minutes is adding two points in the standings. But you know as well as I do that as a player you analyze every shift after every game in your mind to gauge how well you played. Goals and assists are a good measure of a players offensive contributions to the team. Hits and face-off wins can be a good measure of a player/teams energy. And taking too many penalties may be a sign of undisciplined play.

However coaches, parents, and players reference the plus/minus stat for accountability on the ice which I think is very misleading. Yeah Bobby Orr’s +124 signifies that he had a godlike season. But how many times have you stepped on the ice right when a goal is scored. Might as well jump back over the boards before the statistician can get your number.

Baseball has adopted the complicated sabermetrics system to get an objective measure of a players talent. Bare with me here. If a ballplayer hits the cover off the ball but a defensive player makes a great diving catch, then it’s essentially considered a hit. If a ball player strikes out a lot then it’s counted against him more then putting the ball in play. 

I had the great priveledge to play under Coach Jeff Jackson now at the University of Notre Dame. He adopted a similar system of plus/minus to provide accountability and measure progress for players. You can choose your own scoring system but here are some examples that I have used in the past:

–Player scores a goal –Player sets up a goal –Player has a great shot from the slot area/ good scoring chance –Player takes the puck wide and drives to the net for a scoring opportunity –Player provides pressure on the forecheck that leads to a turnover and a scoring chance –Player takes a big hit 5 feet inside his/her own blueline to get the puck out which creates a scoring chance –Defenseman provides a great outlet pass that leads to a scoring chance –Defenseman on the point gets the puck through a bunch of bodies for a screen/rebound chance –Player provides a big hit that changes the momentum of the game –Player wins a draw that leads to a goal or great scoring opporutnity.	–Player fails to tie up his man’s stick and they get a good shot off –Player doesn’t tie up his man on the face-off and they score or get a good chance. –Player is on the wrong side of his man down low and they walk out of the corner for a good chance/goal –Player pulls a flamingo on a point shot –Player is lazy backchecking which results in a goal/scoring chance –Player takes too long of a shift that results in a goal or scoring chance –Player makes a bad change that results in a goal/scoring chance –Player takes a bad penalty
****The main thing is that it directly leads to a goal, great scoring chance, or game changing play. The top player on your team will usually have about 5 pluses in a competitive game.****	**There are a number of lapses that can be considered a minus in this scoring system but the main thing is consistency of the scoring.***

Coaches

As a coach you may want your assistant coach to keep track of this in a notebook on the bench. If you’re lucky enough to have quality game film then you can break it down for the players so they can actually see the plus or minus.

Parents

As a parent it may be hard to provide objective judgement. Your son/daughter will undoubtedly feel you’re being too tough on them. I would suggest using the pluses as a positive reinforcement when your son/daughter explains every detail that went wrong after the game.

Players

As a player you can use this to chunk down your game. What I mean by this is that every player measures themselves by goals and assists. This can be a tough yardstick when things aren’t going your way. A slump is compounded when your name doesn’t appear on the score sheet game after game. But you could be playing well/working hard and just not getting the bounces. If you look at your game in this perspective you can pull positives out to build off of.

The great part about this system is that it provides something players can measure their on ice progress. Coach Jackson would have a score sheet the next day during video that would list each player by number and their true plus/minus. Good game or bad game you wanted to see your "grade." It was kind of like the beginning scene in Tommy Boy when Chris Farley is scanning for his name outside the classroom.
