The last ABAA meeting for the year is nearly upon us — 8 Dec 2009. The topic of conversation will be ‘what is a business analyst’s role in an agile world’?

At first I thought this would be a very interesting conversation but the more I thought about it the more I thought it was a little naive to be asking the question in this way. Is there an actual role? … see for yourself . . .

Kanban

• Prescribes no formal roles

ZenAgile

• Samurai – the defender of the project
• Roshi – the project lead, teacher and mentor
• Sensei – the team’s mentor, leader and users’ champion
• Team – multi-disciplinary where its members are chosen based on need

Scrum

• Scrum Master – protector and champion of the team from The Powers That Be
• Product Owner – customer representative and stack prioritiser
• Team – multi-disciplinary based on need

Extreme Programming (XP)

• Tracker - measures and communicates the team’s progress
• Coach – like the Sensei in ZenAgile this is a supporting role that helps a team stay on process and help the team learn
• Tester – helps the customer define and write acceptance tests for user stories in the same way a Product Owner might do in Scrum
• Customer - defines what is the right product to build, determines the order in which features will be built, and makes sure the product actually work
• Programmer - implements the code to support the user stories
• Programmer administrator - manages the programmer environment

DSDM [1]

• Executive Sponsor – commits appropriate funds and resources
• Visionary – initialises the project by ensuring that essential requirements are found early on. The Visionary has the most accurate perception of the business objectives of the system and the project. Another task is to supervise and keep the development process in the right track.
• Ambassador User – the knowledge of user community into the project, ensures that the developers receive enough amount of user’s feedback during the development process.
• Advisor User – the one who represents important users’ viewpoints
• Project Manager – manages the project in general
• Technical Coordinator – designs the system architecture and controls the technical quality in the project
• Team Leader – ensures that the team works effectively as a whole.
• Developer – interprets the system requirements and model it including developing the deliverable code and build the prototypes
• Tester - checks the correctness in a technical extents by performing some testings. Tester will have to give some comments and documentation.
• Scribe – gathers and records the requirements, agreements, and decisions made in every workshop
• Facilitator – manages the workshops progress, acts as a motor for preparation and communication.

RUP

• Well, it has over 30 roles … so let’s not go there

If the essence of agile is simplicity then there’s certainly something wrong with some of these ways of working. The most striking thing in all of these is the lack of an actual, dedicated, business analysis role. There are certainly elements of a standard BA in DSDM’s Scribe and Facilitator roles. The Tester and Tracker roles in XP could also be done by someone with a BA background. Craig Brown of Better Projects has even suggested that a BA could undertake the role of the Product Owner in Scrum. But Scrum, ZenAgile and Kanban essentially take the most appropriate people with the most appropriate skills in order to acomplish a specific task or activity. In these, there is obvious room for a BA role to lead or follow, but no defined role for a BA to play as it’s task dependent.

So what is a business analyst’s role in an agile world? Just like there is no PM role in agile there is also no actual BA role either. In some areas that focus more on software engineering there aren’t even any standard analyst roles but moreover a focus on eliciting customer needs directly. It means that in some agile projects there may not be a perceived need to involve an analyst at all.

In reality, though, someone needs to assist with the following:

• Understanding users’ needs, wants, expectations, capabilities and attitudes
• Communicating and documenting those needs
• Translating those needs to those who will implement the project
• Ensuring that the output meets the needs of users and the strategic goals of the project and, moreover, the organisation as a whole

This reinforces that skills in business analysis are important for everyone in the project and not just a single role as is prevalent in traditional waterfall projects. It suggests that everyone, from the project lead, samurai or scrum master, should have these skills.

So what is a business analyst’s role in an agile world? There is no BA role. But everyone should definitely have a business analysts skills.

From Cheryl Sone: Green Beans

Ingredients

Green beans
1-2 sticks of butter (or more!)
1 pkg of bacon
Cocktail onions
Brown sugar

Instructions

Boil fresh green beans, set aside with lots of melted butter
Cook bacon crisply, then crumble bits all over green beans
Brown cocktail onions in the bacon grease, adding some brown sugar and butter till you have a nice caramel sauce
Add sauce to green beans and mix together

From Chris Burns: Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread

Ingredients

2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 cups canned pumpkin                                     
1¼ teaspoons salt
½ cup canola oil                                                 
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ cup fat free vanilla pudding                           
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
4 large egg whites                                              
Cooking spray
3 cups all-purpose flour  

Instructions

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2.  Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl, stirring well with a whisk.  Lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife.  Combine flour, cinnamon, salt, and baking soda in a medium bowl, stirring well with a whisk.  Add flour mixture to pumpkin mixture, stirring just until moist.  Stir in chocolate chips.

3.  Spoon batter into 2 (8 X 4 inch) loaf pans coated with cooking spray.  Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely on wire rack. 

From Jodi Stevens: Strawberry Jello Salad with Pretzel Crust

Ingredients

2 c. pretzels, crushed
4 tbsp. sugar
½ – ¾ c. butter, melted
8 oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened
½ c. sugar
8 oz. carton Cool Whip
1 lg. box strawberry Jello
2 c. boiling water
2 pkgs. Strawberries (frozen), thawed and drained

Instructions

Mix pretzels, 4 tablespoon sugar, and butter together; press into bottom 9 x 13 inch pan. Bake at 400 degrees for 6 minutes; cool. In mixing bowl, fold Cool Whip into cream cheese and ½ cup sugar. Spread over cooled crust. Dissolve Jello into boiling water. Add strawberries to Jello and pour over cream cheese. Chill and let set. Cut into squares to serve. Serves 12.

An 8-0 loss to the 2nd place Waterloo Siskins. What more needs to be said? This was the Hurricanes worst loss of the season. After a scoreless 1st period the Siskins came out strong and scored 3 goals in 3 minutes and never looked back.

There is no rest as Guelph returns to the ice tomorrow night at home vs. the Stratford Cullitons. Guelph’s veteran skaters have to step up and show leadership to pull the Canes out of their slump.

Game time at the Sleeman Center is 7:30 p.m.

The Canes learned earlier to-day that their #1 goalie Chris MacDougall was traded by his OHL team the Kitchener Rangers for a draft pick and a defenseman to the Peterborough Petes.

“No Rio de Janeiro o salário é menor que R$ 1 mil e no Rio Grande do Sul é R$ 800. É muito baixo para uma categoria que trabalha tanto”, comentou em entrevista por telefone ao Notícia da Manhã.

Coloro che esercitano l’attività di Pubblico Ministero, o di giudice, sono stati “gratificati” da Berlusconi con i seguenti  epiteti: assassini, terroristi, brigatisti, faziosi, sadici torturatori, perversi da manuale, menti distorte, folli, manipolatori di pentiti, malati di mente, antropologicamente diversi.

I risultati di questa propaganda insensata ed illogica, Berlusconi e la sua ghenga li stanno raggiungendo.

In 96 procure italiane sono stati indetti concorsi per 197 posti di Pubblico Ministero. Le domande presentate sono state 85, ma di queste nessuna per la procura di Palermo, neppure una domanda nonostante fossero stati dichiarati 16 posti vacanti di P.M.

In Sicilia 13 procure su 14 sono rimaste senza pretendenti.

E’ venuta a mancare nei nostri magistrati la vocazione alla giustizia, soprattutto è passata la voglia di arruolarsi nelle file dell’antimafia. 

In ogni modo, è bene raccomandare a Canale5 di provvedere al pedinamento di  quei magistrati che hanno  osato presentare domanda, per  scoprire se indossano i calzini del colore idoneo.

The country that doesn't exist

Even though the Republic of Moldova has recently celebrated toppling its corrupt Communist party from government, the new regime have already landed on their first major stumbling block.

While Moldova itself is almost totally unknown in the West, the breakaway region of Transdniestria will be known to even less people.

The Priednetstrovian Moldavian Republic, as it has been styled, has been effectively independent from Moldova since 1991 while still being part of it in the eyes of both the Moldovan government, and western ones.

The country itself is one of the few remaining relics of the USSR, with a corrupt leader (Igor Smirnov), a police state mentality and even an unintentionally hilarious website proclaiming the countries “free and fair elections” and commitment to “minority ethnic rights”.

Smirnov and his cronies have remained so cosy since 1991 because the Russian (formerly Soviet) 14th Army of the Russian  has been there for decades and since 1991 acting as ‘peacekeepers’. Despite consistent calls for their withdrawal, they are still there.

It is this occupation that Moldovan PM Vlad Filat has demanded an end to, potentially setting the new government at loggerheads with Moscow.

Former Communist President/Boris Yeltsin lookalike Vladimir Voronin cosied up to the Kremlin and so conveniently tidied the Transdniestrian question under the carpet for his eight years of rule.

Filat and acting President Mihai Ghimpu realise that this question will have to be answered before Moldova can ever realistically think of admission to the EU, something it’s people crave.

Filat has rejected the notion that Moldova could join NATO, but wants Russia to respect the territorial integrity of the country by pulling its troops out.

Filat will undoubtedly be more vigorous in requesting this than Voronin and his ministers ever were, but seeing as the summit of the Community of Independent States (formerly members of the USSR), hosted in Chisinau, went by without any breakthrough it seems likely that his words will fall on deaf ears.

Filat is demanding that Russia treat his country with “dignity” in respecting its sovereignty, but it is rare that the Kremlin will treat small nations like Moldova as such. For the moment, it looks as though Russia’s real motives for maintaining its ‘peacekeepers’ in Transdniestria will remain a mystery.

Still, at least this blogger had an inventive way of solving the problem.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on November 17 asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to examine and complete a draft decision on an overall golf course plan through 2020 and said no golf courses should be built on rice-growing land.

PM Dung also said no golf courses should be built on land intended strictly for industrial zones, urban areas and forests, and not to use state budget funds to build the courses.

According to Luu Duc Hai, director of the Department of Urban Development, golf courses in the country cover from 80 to 700 hectares each with most built on farmland.

As well, some investors make use of land for golf courses to develop other projects, and land for the actual golf courses accounts for just a small percentage of the total land needed for the projects, Mr. Hai said.

Land rent for golf courses is lower than that of other property such as villas, houses and trade centers, so many investors have exploited this to recoup their investment faster.

To restrict the number of such cases, PM Dung asked the ministry to make clear in the draft law that no hotels or villas are allowed to be built on land intended for golf courses and the land cannot be sold or transferred.

In regards to granting licenses to build golf courses, it would be the responsibility of the provincial People’s Committees to decide which investors to grant licenses to and revoke licenses in cases where state rules are violated, he said.
