Getting students to do any homework is a fruitless task. One which I all but gave up on years ago. I don’t blame them – they all have exceedingly busy professional lives. But I do try and encourage them to at least try and listen to something in English. Now and again. Most of them spend plenty of time on buses, metros or in their cars, stuck in traffic. But all too often, my encouragement is to no avail.

And yet there is some fabulous audio content available these days. One of the biggest pluses of the existence of the internet is the podcast. For expat, student or anyone who just wants something reasonably intelligent and interesting to listen to. The BBC has dozens of fantastic podcasts, of which I must subscribe to about a dozen. Six of my favourite are in the image below and well worth checking out. It would be amiss of me to not mention the Guardians podcast offerings as well. Their science, tech and footy shows are the best of the bunch.

The Renga Ensemble is formed from musicians from the London Philharmonic Orchestra who work with performers and composers from outside the classical mainstream – such as jazz, folk, Indian and African styles. Director Scott Stroman talks to Edward Seckerson about the ensemble, and introduces the concert on 2 December at the Vortex Jazz Club in London. Plus contributions from two members of Renga, and some CD gift recommendations from Edward Seckerson.

Welcome to La Dolce Vita @ Bar Sia

Back in the days of catching the bus to school everyday, I remember the radio constantly blaring. There was a particular segment on one station called secret sound. A sound would be played, then listeners would call in and guess what it was. Some sounds were tricky, and took days, if not weeks to figure out. Other sounds didn’t take long to identify.

Still on a bit of a sound tangent, I thought I’d record my own secret sound and see how long it takes for you to guess!

I recorded this sound in GarageBand using the built-in microphone on my computer. In GarageBand it’s also possible to create podcasts (podcasts are informative/entertaining program files that combine pre-recorded voice, music and images). They are usually freely available and can be downloaded off the internet (the iTunes Store has a good collection of free podcasts to choose from and subscribe to, but you’ll need to download it). I might add that podcasts make a wonderful addition to your MP3 player or iPod if you happen to find yourself in Sydney using public transport.
