This is Daipayan Chattoraj, a 26 year-old mechanical engineer (originally from Asansol) working at Kolkata in the Power Sector. His hobbies include listening to music, photography, biking, solving puzzles and riddles (he is a three-time Hall of Fame entrant in an online puzzle solving game- KLUELESS). His favorite bands, other than the Poets, are Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Linkin Park.

How and when did you discover the Poets?

It was in 2005, I had completed playing Max Payne 2- The Fall of Max Payne (which I took a record day and a half to complete). In the end credits, I heard ‘Late Goodbye’ and was completely mesmerized by the song. I went to college the next day and shared my experience with my friends. There was another guy who was equally smitten with the song. We found out the name of the song and band. Since then, we have both been loyal followers of the band.

If you had the power to decide what their next music video would be, which song would you choose? Why?

I have always visualized ‘Carnival of Rust’ in a different way. Although I liked the video, (it’s awesome. Period) I wanted it to be different. However, if given the power, I would like ‘Rewind’ to become a video. It is a powerful composition and I love it.

Which song of theirs do you think describes you/relates to your personality?

It has to be ‘Dying to Live’. “Tell me this, would you miss it, trying on another face again to see if it’s you?” Every line from that song makes me think and feel one with the writer and question myself on decisions I made at major crossroads What if?

Do you think POTF’s music enhances your gaming experience? If so, how?

I used to be an avid gamer during college and I still try my skills whenever I find the time. When I played CoD recently, I had Twilight Theater playing in the background. Marko’s baritone voice has such a calming effect. It’s always a pleasure listening to POTF and more so when you are killing people mercilessly (in a game, of course).

This is Sneha Narayanan, 22, from Kochi, currently working in the Hospitality line.

The best days of 2012, for her, were August 27th (the Wine-and-Dine event with the Poets) & 28th, the concert at Kolkata. It was a significant event for her as she was leaving for Mumbai the next morning. “So, I left the city I love, with memories of the band I adore! My best friend and I had good food and drinks, and managed to click snaps with the Poets”, she says.

How and when did you discover the Poets?

I first discovered the Poets some time between late 2008 and early 2009. I heard two of their songs then, ‘Carnival of Rust’ and ‘Illusion and Dream’. A friend had transferred these two songs on my phone and I kept hearing them on loop. I particularly connected with these two songs then, as I was going through a bad breakup. I still maintain ‘Illusion and Dream’ to be in my Top 3 POTF songs list.

Which song of theirs do you connect with the most?

I have connected with a few Poets songs over the years. It’s amazing that if you search, you have a POTF song for every moment, emotion and equation. I’d say I connect with ‘Kamikaze Love’ the most. This song took me by surprise. My best friend asked me to listen to the song. I added the song to my phone (I always listen to songs on shuffle). So here starts off this amazing song and I am hooked. I don’t know the name as yet as I haven’t looked at my phone, but as they say, the rest is history.

Who is your favorite band member? If you were to ever meet him, what would you like to tell him?

I love Marko’s voice and versatility, but I’d like to be a bit biased towards Jari. I didn’t know who he was before 27th August 2012. But meeting him on the 27th and viewing him in action live on the 28th was love at first sight. I don’t think I’d be able to utter any words if given the opportunity to speak to him. Mustering up the courage to ask him for a snap was just me following suit of others around.

Life progress. Fun with languages, something you might not have known. Poets of the fall rocks!!

Today

Went down to the employment offices, and i’m now instituted (I think that’s the right word to use) into it. Going to call the social services (Don’t know the English equivalent) tomorrow and hear what they might say. That’s all i can really say about it. Let’s hope for the best.

Looked up lexial similarities today. It’s a measurement you use to see how alike two languages are. Norway and Sweden has a 95% similarity and Amerian and british are 99%! So i think that should tell you just how similar Norwegian and Swedish are. 85% being that of a dialect. So that was pretty fun.

I gave a friend on twitter a link to a great song i love (Which will be in the feature) to see if she would like that one. Since she had dissed the great rap songs i sent her last time, i felt that i should try to find some music she likes. Turns out that the first song i sent her, she loved. So much so, that she wanted to find out more of their songs. I’ll list some of my favorite ones at the end of this post.

So yes! I’m feeling a bit better, after having stayed here for a while now. So that’s good.

Tomorrow

I will be heading home tomorrow, and call the social services.. or whatever they’re called.

Anything I say about these guys is not enough

This is Adhidev Mukherjee, a 22-year-old, living in Kolkata. He works for a leading television channel. He loves his music, time in the swimming pool and going out with his friends and having a good time. Other than the Poets (of course), he is a big fan of Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree and several other artists. He aspires to head his own television channel some day. He dabbles in photography and is into theater technical direction and production.

How and when did you discover Poets of the Fall?  

It was 2006, when I was still in school and heavily into music as I still am. My friends and I were practicing for the school band and were struggling. It was then that we discovered this new band and their new video was amazing. ‘Locking Up The Sun’ was the song and I quickly caught on to them and we were soon jumping with ‘Lift’ as my friends and I became big fans of the band.

What do you love most about Poets of the Fall? 

Everything about their music is just so great. For me their music lifts me up every morning and it’s great after a hard day at office. POTF has been special to me because they remind of times when I was a kid and their music has a perpetual place on my iPod. The recent and the biggest reason why they blow me away, is the fact that they are amazing human beings. This is something I saw when I was near them during their performance at Kolkata (which I may add was one of the best evenings of my life).

Marko’s voice, Jaska’s attitude, Olli’s crazy riffs when he plays those solos. They are an experience.

If you had the power to decide their next music video, which song would you choose? Why?

I was about to say ‘Kamikaze Love’ because of its sheer brilliance but then I thought, they should complete the missing song and do ‘Signs of Life’ (apt isn’t it?) This one song is an amazing bit of music and has honestly been one of their best compositions in recent times along with ‘Temple of Thought’.

This is Aditya Iyer, a 20-year-old computer engineering student, who aspires to be an entrepreneur one day and travel the world. He writes his own blog, is a photographer, gamer, movie buff, tech lover, and loves traveling. Apart from POTF he’s a die hard fan of Linkin Park and loves various rock and metal artists from Aerosmith to Green Day. 25th August, 2012 was the best day of his life, as he saw POTF live for the first time.

How and when did you discover POTF?

As I’m a hardcore gamer and a lover of good literature and music, I often search for music that I hear in video games, movies and TV. That is how I came across POTF years back during my school days, thanks to the critically acclaimed game Max Payne 2: Fall of Max Payne. ‘Late Goodbye’ totally blew me away, and after further digging I heard the first 2 albums, Signs of Life and Carnival of Rust and have been in love ever since.

What do you think separates POTF from other artists? 

POTF makes phenomenal music, which holds deep meaning that I can relate to. Not every artist can do this. They are not just versatile, from melodious ballads to screaming thunders, but every song relates to you, making one go, “That’s POTF!”

POTF is one of the sole examples of Cinematic Rock, as every song has a story of its own, which one can visualize in their minds when listening. No wonder they make awesome music videos.

I love Marko’s voice, he sounds heavenly especially when he sings songs like Cradled In Love and The Beautiful Ones. And watching him do his theatrics on stage is fun and truly awesome. Their live performances make them stand a class apart.

What is your favorite POTF album? Why?

Tough question. Though I have a preference order, I’ll cheat a bit here and go with Alchemy Vol. 1 as it’s the compilations of some of their best songs which are the band’s personal favorites, and the fact it was first released, here in India as a ‘Best of POTF’ CD which became vinyl as we know today. To be honest, my favorite is Signs of Life, as most of my favorite songs are from that album and that was the one I first heard.

Poets of the Fall are one of the bands my new friend Dan oddly introduced me too. Well he got a load of bands and shoved them on a usb, gave them to me and said listen (probably said more than that but you get the idea). And so I listened and listened and this band in particular stuck out to me. The whole album is brilliant.

They are a rock band from Finland, formed in 2003. They have five albums out, and Signs of Life is their first album.
Usually band’s first album is all about discovering themselves and their music. When I first heard this, and then found out it was their first album, well I’m really surprised, because it is really good. Like really really good. Like Oh my dear lord of all the heavens. This is their first album? Wow.

It’s got a excellent mix of tracks, some really up beat ones like “Lift” and then some really slow songs like “Sleep” My favourite song from the album is probably “Illusion and Dreams”. I must insist that was really hard to pick, I spent ages just thinking, and listening to all the songs for several times. Ha I make it sound painful.

I think that if you’ve never really discovered this band, starting at the beginning is brilliant, so this album is well where you start m’dear.

This is Shaswata Ray, a 16-year-old student from Kolkata. He is an avid music fan. Apart from Poets of the Fall, he loves Green Day, MCR and The Offspring. He also plays the guitar. 28th August, the day POTF played at Kolkata, was the best day of his life.

How and when did you discover Poets of the Fall? 

I discovered POTF during September 2011. A school friend suggested I listen to “Lift”. I watched the video, and that was it. It was one of the best things I had ever heard. That was the start to all the POTF madness.

What Poets of the Fall music video do you like the most? Why?

Tough one. Maybe I’ll go with Carnival Of Rust. Mainly because I think the video was ingeniously thought of. With references here and there to most of the other tracks, it is certainly one of the best videos I have EVER seen!

Which song of theirs speaks to you on a personal level? How?

I cant choose just one! I’ll have to go with “3 AM” and “Cradled In Love”.

“3 AM” gets me every time I listen to it. It seems to speak out the story of my life. Of some of the little fights I have with a certain someone, whom I happen to love very much.

“Cradled In Love” is simply mindblowing. It’s like a gust of fresh air. Every time I listen to it, it “Lifts my spirits, takes me higher, makes me fly”. Undoubtedly the BEST love song I have ever heard. Again, it reminds me of that “someone special” with whom I share a great bond.
