Navy SEALs Face Assault Charges for Capturing Most-Wanted Terrorist

Navy SEALs have secretly captured one of the most wanted terrorists in Iraq — the alleged mastermind of the murder and mutilation of four Blackwater USA security guards in Fallujah in 2004. And three of the SEALs who captured him are now facing criminal charges, sources told FoxNews.com.

The three, all members of the Navy’s elite commando unit, have refused non-judicial punishment — called an admiral’s mast — and have requested a trial by court-martial.

Ahmed Hashim Abed, whom the military code-named “Objective Amber,” told investigators he was punched by his captors — and he had the bloody lip to prove it.

Now, instead of being lauded for bringing to justice a high-value target, three of the SEAL commandos, all enlisted, face assault charges and have retained lawyers.

Matthew McCabe, a Special Operations Petty Officer Second Class (SO-2), is facing three charges: dereliction of performance of duty for willfully failing to safeguard a detainee, making a false official statement, and assault.

Petty Officer Jonathan Keefe, SO-2, is facing charges of dereliction of performance of duty and making a false official statement.

Petty Officer Julio Huertas, SO-1, faces those same charges and an additional charge of impediment of an investigation.

2007 Marilyn Manson ออกอลบัม Drink Me Eat Me แต่ไม่ประสพน์ความสำเร็จเท่า The Golden Age Of Grotesque Twiggy Ramirez กลับมาอีกครั้งในปีเดียวกัน เขาบอกว่า ยิ่งอยู่ห่างจาก Manson เท่าไร ก็ทำให้เขาคิดถึงมากขึ้น Tim Skold ได้กลับไปอยู่วงเดิม คือ KMFDM ในปี 2009

10. For Better of For Worse (1979-2008)

We start off our top ten comic strip list with a comic which was perhaps not the funniest or most innovative, but had heart and wholesomeness and a touch of bravery. For better or for worse followed the lives of the Patterson, and throughout the strip’s run we have been able to grow along with the characters as the children grow up as kids into teenagers, then through to college, until they are grown and have kids of their own. Not many other mediums can allow for this sort of longevity through the lives of such characters, and Johnston took full advantage of that.
For Better or For Worse also had some defining moments which put it into the higher echelon of comic strips through dealing with some very serious and hot button topics for a comic. One of these moments was the death of their dog Farley, touching on a chord most other comics would never think of approaching. The comic also made headlines by having the son’s best friend come out as gay, a bold step for a family comic in 1993.

9. Dick Tracy (1931-present)
Chester Gould

Flash Gordon may have paved the way for comic strip serials, but Dick Tracy was the comic which truely turned that concept into something special. As one of the most famous fictional crime busters, Dick Tracy introduced many to a world of detective procedural and mystery-solving forensics, as well as creating a distinct noir world with all sorts of crime villains. Gould’s strip would also introduce violence into the funny pages as well as send out a strong message concerning justice, despite how conservative it may be for some.

8. The Boondocks (1999-2006)
Aaron McGruder

The best comic strips are usually political. Likewise, the best comic strips keep in perspective of the characters. The Boondocks in both. The Boondocks deals with the racial isolation of black Americans with comments on politics and black culture. McGruder managed to keep things fresh with many controversial strips due to his far-reaching liberal views. The Boondocks managed to catch a moment in culture with bravery and boldness, laying it out on the pages for all to see.

7. Pogo (1948-1975)
Walt Kelly

One of the most influential comic strips, Pogo delved heavily into satire and was one of the best at its trade. Satirizing both politics as well as basic human nature, Pogo was always interesting and often controversial. And oh yeah, it was also funny. Along with the clever humour that left its indelible mark on the funny pages, Pogo was also a masterpiece of slapstick and offered a massive variety of characters. It influenced a wide range of strips since its run and its impact will remain for a long time.

6. Krazy Kat (1913-1944)
George Herriman

Perhaps no comic strip has had quite the creative impact on its medium as Krazy Kat did. Krazy Kat was an allegorical fantasy filled with slapstick humour, poetry and surrealism. Critics have been praising this comic since it first appeared and have even considered it a true work of art. It has a huge fan following even today and many comic enthusiast hold it as their favourite.

5. Doonesbury (1970-present)
Gary Trudeau

When one thinks of political cartons, one thinks of Doonesbury. A daily strip since 1970 (with a break or two in between), Doonesbury has been tasking the political temperature of America and the world in general for many years now. Trudeau is notorious for giving a liberal viewpoint through his strip, yet tend to criticize anyone who happens to be in power at the time. The comic is not afraid to delve into the current events of the time, covering everything from Watergate to Iran-Contra to the recent war in Iraq. Doonesbury is hot-button and controversial and always has something to say.

4. Peanuts (1950-2000)
Charles Schulz

There is probably no comic strip more well-known throughout the world than Peanuts. The trials and tribulations of Charlie Brown and his friends are perhaps the most popular to ever appear on the funny pages. Peanuts’ charm comes not in hard-biting satire or edgy humour, but rather it exists in simple, good-natured characters and simple yet effective comedy. Peanuts built a foundation on traditions such as the kite and football gags, and created some wonderful characters whose personalities actually run deeper than one may think, especially with the never-win Charlie Brown and the insatiable Lucy. Above all, Peanuts has heart and it has made its stamp on comics unlike any other.

3. Bloom County (1980-1989)
Berkeley Breathed

Showcasing a slice of American life and culture in the 80’s, Bloom County has become one of the most beloved comics of its time. Opus the penguin is one of the most memorable characters in comic strips. Once again, this is a political cartoon, delving into the fabric of America at that time and satirizing almost everything, from Apple computers to its fellow comic strip Garfield. Bloom County survives today in the minds of all who read this wonderfully funny and provocative strip and will continue to for many years.

2. The Far Side (1980-1995)
Gary Larson

Chances are if you ever see anything drawn by Gary Larson you will know instantly that it was drawn by Gary Larson. The world of Far Side is distinct in its style, to be sure. But why is it really number 2 on this list? Because it is downright hilarious. Larson’s one-panel jokes don’t involve long-running characters or a serial storyline. They are simply one-shot jokes which work extremely well. The Far Side is side-splitting humour at its best. Some punchlines are really easy to grasp the moment you see it, while others take some time to sink in. It is this layered humour which makes Far Side accessible to all. The Far Side is perhaps simply the funniest creation to ever hit the newspaper pages.

1. Calvin and Hobbes (1985-1995)
Bill Watterson

Picking the number one spot for this was actually pretty easy. Calvin and Hobbes; the greatest comic strip ever. Calvin and Hobbes makes us laugh, makes us think, and makes us cry and it does so better than any other strip out there. At times it is a cute, funny cartoon and at others it is a strong statement about the world. I wouldn’t call C&H a political cartoon so much as I would call it a philosophical cartoon. Watterson’s themes deal with culture and society and usually have very strong underlying messages. Watterson’s strongest theme, however, is the creativity of children and just how wonderful their imagination can be (especially if you are into building snowmen). His message throughout the strip is to never underestimate kids; they are smarter than we give them credit for. And their creative urges should be nurtured rather than marginalized. Calvin and Hobbes is a pleasure to read every time and has earned its place at the top.

As a huge fan of mashups and remixes, I found it refreshing that Pogo (this hour’s most interesting YouTube sensation) has created as set of entirely new tracks out of sounds found in movies. The tracks he composes are digitally embellished to tie the piece together through a thumping beat (the song featured above includes a sine wave bass and custom drum sequences) while staying true to the original movie sounds. Without the aid of auto-tune which – lets face it – has become the musical equivalent of Photoshop filters, Pogo has created some of the most inventive mashups/remixes on YouTube.

As an electronic music artist from Perth in Western Australia, Pogo first received recognition from his track and video labeled “Alice” (which has gotten more than 4 million views) and since has created several more songs from movies like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and The Sword in the Stone. All of Pogo’s creations are available for download, but I would highly recommend watching the song/video combo for additional entertainment, because who doesn’t love dancing penguins?

Ieri sera sono andato a sentire questo gruppo di Barcellona, The Kinky Beat. Nascono nel 2003 e fanno ska-rocksteady, per poi volgere al reggae  e da lì al dub-dubstep e infine drum&bass. Un bel giro, insomma Un po’ come i 99 posse quando iniziarono a remixare le loro canzoni in chiave d&b.

La Kinky non è male. Se la sono presi comodi, a dir la verità, per venire fuori a suonare. Saranno saliti sul palco un poco prima dell’una. Però se la cavavano, batteria-chitarra-basso-cantante e dj, molto animati e molto simpatici. Poi a 180bpm le cose sono molto più semplici, a dir la verità.

Il locale -perché di locale si trattava- si chiama Groute ‘77 ed è in culo ai lupi a sud di Madrid. Il biglietto di ingresso era onesto (6€ prevendita 8€ all’entrata), ma il posto era veramente piccolo e angusto. Bello, per carità, con una discreta collezione di adesivi militanti in bagno (i bagni sono il biglietto da visita). Però piccolo, veramente piccolo. Un paragone per i pisani, direi circa il doppio del Caracol.

Che strani, i concerti qui. A parte che la gente si esalta e si scatena con un nonnulla, hanno questa discreta abilità di mischiare in un unico evento un concerto dub, una dancehall d&b ed un pogo. C’era così tanta gente a spingere e saltare che praticamente potevi startene per un po’ coi piedi sollevati senza cadere. Insomma, ho un graffio sul braccio, causato da un contatto ravvicinato e alquanto involontario con lo spigolo del palco.

Mi meraviglio, data la situazione, che nessuna sia rimasta incinta, a dir la verità.

E poi era un sacco divertente, fare conoscenza coi vicini di spinta, finito il delirio e quanto la massa si era diratata fino a permettere il normale svolgimento delle funzioni respiratorie e conseguentemente verbali. Sei sempre una fonte di curiosità quando vai in giro in quattro, matematici che arrampicano e sono un po’ ubriachi e stanno sostenendo una colonna per non farla cadere.

Se non era per noi, si rischiava il disastro.

Se n’è parlato a Ferrara durante il festival del giornalismo indetto da “Internazionale” e se ne parlerà a Milano durante la mostra “Streep – Comix Journalism e dintorni“.

Il Graphic Journalism è la narrazione di fatti ancora attuali raccontati però per immagini. Non si tratta di storia poiché questi fumetti sono ambientati nei Balcani o nella striscia di Gaza, in luoghi insomma dove i conflitti sono ancora aperti. Si tratta di giornalismo, dunque, che però viene mediato e rielaborato da un linguaggio “lento”: il fumetto può essere pubblicato anche a distanza di sei mesi (o ben di più) dai fatti di cui narra, senza alcuna pretesa di fornire al lettore informazioni in tempo reale.

Riassumo qui alcune opinioni emerse durante la conferenza “La guerra a fumetti” tenutasi sabato 3 ottobre 2009 a Ferrara e che ha visto la partecipazione di Patrick Chappatte, (autore di fumetti svizzero-libanese), David Polonsky (illustratore israeliano e art director del film “Valzer con Bashir”) e Joe Sacco (autore di fumetti statunitense). L’incontro è stato condotto da Luca Sofri, il figlio di Adriano.

Luca chiede: Per tradizione il fumetto viene legato al divertimento, alla spettacolarità che intrattiene. Nello specifico, viene collegato all’umorismo, al far ridere (in forme diverse di sdrammatizzazione e coinvolgimento). Voi che lavorate con un tipo di fumetto maggiormente legato ad aspetti drammatici, come vi ponete con l’umorismo?

Joe ritiene che Patric abbia ragione quando trova il modo di interrompere il momento drammatico introducendo sé stesso nelle proprie storie e facendo fare a questo personaggio la figura dello stupido, di quello che non capisce, di quello fuori luogo… E’ facile da fare: ti trovi in una situazione di cui non sai niente, sei inadatto ad una guerra, sei incapace di inserirti in un commando militare.
Ma lo humor esiste anche in una forma diversa, che non interrompe il momento drammatico: è lo humor nero, tipico ad esempio di alcune barzellette che ci si racconta in Bosnia.

David spiega di aver utilizzato molto humor nero, che però si è spesso perso nelle traduzioni. Lo humor dipende dal ricostruire le cose e cambiargli punto di vista. E in questo senso fornire il punto di vista di altri uomini può dare al fumetto un tocco umano che forse non è humor ma che è indispensabile.
Quindi David sostiene che occorra conservare la traccia delle cose, testimoniare: situazioni come la guerra non possono essere giustificate in nessun modo.

Patric utilizza umorismo anche nel tratto; svela di avere disperatamente bisogno di alleggerire la situazione: quando va in zone di guerra vede cose che fanno accapponare la pellle. Però si ritiene un cartoonist, quindi deve scrivere storie che seguano certi stilemi (tra cui far ridere e, come diceva David, il tocco umano). “Sono qui solo per dirti ciò che ho visto”. Ma Patric lo ritiene un trucco, l’unico modo per portare gente normale (i lettori) all’interno di una situazione assurda in cui si trovano altre persone normali (le vittime dei conflitti).

Luca chiede: chi sceglie di raccontare ciò che ha visto pone inevitabilmente un filtro. Ma nel vostro lavoro c’è anche il filtro didattico? il tentativo di informare? Vi ponete la questione della verità esatta e della completezza di ciò che state raccontando ? Così come si fa o si dovrebbe fare nel giornalismo…

Joe ha studiato giornalismo, e spiega che la parola “oggettività” è lo standard che ti insegnano. Se la situazione è controversa, dovresti fornire entrambe le versioni. Ma Joe rifiuta quest’operazione, perché lui non vuole dare la versione di chi gestisce un conflitto al sicuro, lontano dal dolore. Lui mostra ciò che può vedere, sia che si tratti di vittime, che se si tratta dei carnefici.
E’ difficile non identificarsi con le persone con cui ti rapporti. Le loro paure diventano le tue. Si è trovato ad esempio anche assieme ai Marines statunitensi in Iraq e ha cercato di riportare il loro nervosismo, il senso di inadeguatezza, gli errori che hanno fatto. Cerca di essere oggettivo, ma solo all’interno della visuale che può offrire.

David sostiene che l’oggettività non esiste: c’è sempre qualche cosa che devia. Si pensi al fotogiornalismo, dove basta un’inquadratura differente per dare tutta un’altra impressione. Non si può essere oggettivi.

Patric è d’accordo con David. Spesso lui stesso non capisce niente di ciò che sta succedendo, come della guerra nei Balcani: e ritiene onesto mostrarlo. “Viaggi per un paese sconosciuto e ti senti stupido. Non puoi avere una visione complessiva”. Quindi Patric usa l’ironia per porsi ad una certa distanza dalle persone che lo circondano, ma non per farsi beffe di loro. Lo stupido sei tu, pensi a cose stupide, vivi uno shoc culturale: e queste inadeguatezze sono tutte da mostrare.
Si tratta di un’inadeguatezza che invece i giornalismi non mostrano, poiché per mandato devi essere competente e sapere sempre tutto (o fingere di saperlo).

[Piccola nota aggiuntiva: l'ultimo fumetto di Makkox, guarda caso, fornisce una definizione di Comix Journalism, anche se forse in modo involontario. Dice infatti Makkox:

Nagyon jó este volt. 19.45kor megkezdtük az alapozást, ami 2 sörből és 2 pohár borból állt részemről, majd elindultunk és belépés után még legurítottam 2 Jack Danielset jéggel. A közönség tombolva ordította a koncert vége felé, hogy REN-DŐR-SZTO-RI. Tegnap megtudtam, hogy November 13.án Tankcsapda koncert lesz, esélytelennek tartom, hogy ne legyek ott, de kanyarodjunk vissza a Supernemre. A Sagramort olyan max 40-50 fősnek mondanám, de szerintem voltunk ott 100an is vagy többen.  Nem is gondoltam volna, hogy ilyen sok ismerőssel találkozom, sőt még az értelmesebb réteggel is találkoztam a széchenyiből, akik nem diszkózni mentek a széchenyi hét záróbulijára. Sőt a Szabival sikerült egy mondatot váltanom:

Summa summarum: Éljen az alternatív zene.

A otto anni gli regalarono un giradischi con un vinile del re. Elvis Presley.
Lo ascoltò.
Se ne innamorò.
Lo riascoltò e finì col consumarlo.
Gli fu regalato un secondo vinile del re.
Se ne innamorò più della prima volta.
Lo ascoltò e lo consumò come il precedente.
Andò avanti così fino all’età di tredici anni.
Arrivò poi il giorno della gita scolastica al primo anno delle superiori. Quarta ginnasio, Liceo Classico Tito Livio.
Non si poteva sperare in un appagante futuro lavorativo senza conoscere la lingua inglese: la 4 A, la 4 B e la 4 C si involarono quindi alla volta di Londra.
Arte, cultura e cosmopolitismo erano i motti dei professori. Droga, birra e Converse erano quelli degli studenti.
Fu lì che Marco si frequentò per la prima volta con il brit pop.
Dalle scatenate chitarre e dalla calda voce del rock’n'roll ai suoni suadenti e penetranti di gruppi come Blur, Pulp e Suede.
Questa volta comprò solamente compact disc. Il giradischi e la parentesi dei mangia nastri erano stati ampiamente sostituiti dalla modernità. Cosa, questa, alla quale si abituò faticosamente.
Quando sul volo di ritorno, il suo amico Davide gli chiese perchè non si fosse comprato anche un CD degli Oasis, Marco rispose risoluto: “ma sei pazzo?!? Quelli sono dei venduti… sono troppo commerciali. La vera musica la suonano i Blur!”
Lui non voleva muoversi nell’immenso palcoscenico del mondo, preferiva rimanerne ai margini, dietro le quinte, e sognare di diventare una rock star intellettuale dannata e destinata a grandi imprese e ad una morte precoce. Un Achille della musica, insomma.
Ecco perchè disse sì ai Blur e categoricamente no agli Oasis, anche se, a dirla tutta, non è che ci capisse poi molto di musica. Non ancora, per lo meno.
Proseguì sul sentiero del rifiuto. Erano anni di irrimediabili mutamenti interiori, di prospettive capovolte e di desideri così grandi che per sino un cuore di ragazzo faceva fatica a contenerli. A diciassette anni controsterzò in direzione di borchie, piercing e contestazione: cavalcò la nuova ondata del punk. non che fosse il prototipo del giovane tutto cresta colorata, dissenso sociale e anelli sparsi per il viso. Fondamentalmente il suo aspetto non mutò se non per i capelli ora ritti quasi volessero toccare il cielo e sostenuti nel loro slancio da una massiccia dose di gel. Il tutto coronato da due piccole punte metalliche che attraversavano l’estremità alta dell’orecchio sinistro. Gli piaceva definirsi alternativo.
Furono gli anni degli accordi distorti, dei riff sincopati, ritmi frenetici e saltellanti, voci graffianti e fantasie di fuga.
I concerti erano il suo habitat naturale: si sentiva un gladiatore nell’arena brulicante di fiere affamate. Si lanciava nella folla e dava inizio alla sua danza disarmonica, composta da scatti e moti improvvisi, spallate e disequilibri, volteggi e repentine cadute.
Non voleva danneggiare.
Non voleva essere danneggiato.
Voleva solamente respirare l’estasi di universi che per la prima volta sentiva sui.
