Ah, Pokemon Red, one of the original Pokemon games… Back before there were near 500 Pokemon, b

Ah, Pokemon Red, one of the original Pokemon games… Back before there were near 500 Pokemon, back when all that mattered was catching them all and beating every Trainer in your path, none of that frilly Beauty Pageant or other stupid mini-games. Just 150 Pokemon (well, a few more if you could find Mew or messed around for a bit near Cinnabar) and YOU.

Er, so anyway… I’ve been wanting to play a Pokemon game… I don’t why, maybe it’s to hype myself for HeartGold and SoulSilver, or maybe I just felt the urge to “catch ‘em all” or whatever. Regardless, I picked up my old Pokemon Red and started to play. Of course, as one might expect from the title, I did something a little different… I decided to play as one, and ONLY one, Pokemon throughout the entire game. Something not new, obviously… people have done it before, but I wanted to see if I can challenge myself and do it. Well, I succeeded, and… to be honest, it was easier than I thought it’d be, unfortunately. But, let’s start at the beginning, shall we?

Hmm, who to choose...?

I went into this with only my knowledge of the game (which I hadn’t played since I was… twelve or so) into this, I decided that Squirtle would probably be the best choice for the solo run. Not that I thought it’d be the easiest, actually. I originally thought going through with Bulbasaur would be the easiest, seeing how easy Grass types have it against the first two Gym Leaders. Also, I already figured I wasn’t ready for the “challenge” (i.e. grinding for five or so hours) of choosing Charmander, seeing the huge disadvantage it has against the first three Gym Leaders. Of course, as I was soon to learn, picking Squirtle made it just a little easier than I’d thought it’d be.

One thing I forgot to think about, however, was the raw stat points of the three Pokemon. While it can vary slightly, Squirtle and its evolutions have the highest Defense of the three starters. Of course, one can get pretty unlucky and its Squirtle to level up without big boosts to its Defense, but… that wasn’t the case for my little Pokemon. I don’t know if he’s just average or slightly above (seeing as I don’t know what generation the stats on Bulbapedia are from), but its definitely not bad. That basically means my Squirtle (well, Blastoise now) is a TANK. Normal attacks only really take off about 5 HP, and attacks it’s weak against can’t OHKO it, though some of the stronger Thunder attacks still take off a good chuck of life. Yeah, I know, Thunder moves are typically “Special” moves, but it seems my Blastoise is good in the “Special” Stat too, which I’d assume would work towards its Special Defense as well. The point is… it looks like I was wrong about Squirtle being the “average” choice of the three.

It seems that one of the major things that you have to do when playing a Solo Run is to one hit KO (OHKO) EVERYTHING. If you don’t, you run a good chance of getting your ass handed to you with the enemy’s attack. Of course, the advantage of playing with only one Pokemon is that you level up quickly, since you won’t be switching other Pokemon in. Soon enough (for me, it was around Mt. Moon), you’ll get strong enough to OHKO almost everything, though you still have to watch you for those few high-level Pokemon.

What a cute little tank.

So, as one would assume, by the time I’d gotten to Lt. Surge’s Gym, I was OHKO’ing everything with Water Gun or Bite. Even when I fought the Gym Leader, I was able to do the same with two of his three Pokemon (though I missed my second Bite against Raichu and almost had a completely fried turtle to show for it). I didn’t even grind, I just fought the Trainers along the way! I’d never go out of my way to walk around grass fields, seeing as most of the Wild Pokemon are lower leveled than the ones Trainers had anyway.

One bad thing I DID notice about Squirtle and its evolutions was that they were really susceptible to status effects. Who knows, it may have just my luck, but it seemed I was getting confused and paralyzed a lot more than I usually did, and when I was put to sleep, I’d be asleep for 3+ turns. I can’t say if certain Pokemon are more likely to get hit by status effects than others, but it sure as hell FELT like it. Erika handed my ass to me when one of her Pokemon put my Blastoise to sleep and pummeled it to death with Grass attacks. D: Then again, it seems status effects don’t come up as often in the Red/Blue games than it does in later generations (at least, from my experience), so it seemed it was only a minor convenience.

I’ve noticed that throughout my playthrough my Blastoise would run out of PP. A LOT. I can imagine this problem with most Solo Runs, though. Since you typically use six Pokemon in a normal playthrough, you don’t usually have to worry about your Pokemon running out of PP, except for move that only had five points in the first place. If you’re only using one Pokemon, however, even with OHKOs you’ll be finding yourself running low on moves often, since most routes are crawling with Trainers, and caves have you fighting wild Pokemon at every other step. I had to keep going back to Pokemon Centers to recover SupaSoaka’s PP (yes, I named my Squirtle that) more often than I wanted to… and since I never bothered to catch a HM Slave for Fly, I was always walking the way back. It was a pain, but something I figured I’d get into from the start.

Let’s see, as for the Elite Four… I had a bit of trouble. At that point, I figured I was leveling up too fast, so I started to avoid trainers. I made it to the Elite Four at level 70, which I thought might have still been too high, but I decided against that once I started fighting them… Also, I decided to limit my moveset slightly by one, only having one Normal move and two, not using any TMs (though I did use the HM Surf so I didn’t need another slave). So, if anything was resistant to Water, I’d have to try and chip away health with Bite.

So, walking into the Elite Four, I got a taste for what I was in for with Lorelei. As an Ice Pokemon user, they are naturally resistant to Water, so… it was a pain. While I was also resistant to them, her Pokemon was just as good as SupaSoaka at chipping away my health… and her Cloyster, man… it naturally has high Defense, so Biting it to death took a awhile.

But, Blastoise prevailed, and I moved on to Bruno. He told me he weight-lifted with his Pokemon everyday. I’m not quite sure was that means, but it makes Bruno sound like a badass. Too bad most of his Pokemon were Ground-type, so my Blastoise could easily OHKO it with Water Gun. His Machamp was a pain though… a Hydro Pump followed by another move made relatively short work of him, though.

Old lady Agatha wasn’t really difficult either. After listening to her talk about how Oak was a handsome Pokemon Trainer waaaaay back in the day, I quickly beat down her Ghost Pokemon. I couldn’t Bite them, obviously, but seeing as my moveset contained three Water moves (Water Gun, Surf, and Hydro Pump), it didn’t really limit me. Damn old lady trying to get in my way for the next challenge…

…The leader of the Elite Four himself, Lance! As most already know, Lance fights with Dragon Pokemon, which are hard to catch, and even harder to level up properly, but are WELL worth the effort… and Lance will show you the fruits of such labors by beating your ass down. I had a rough time with him, seeing as his dragons had a lot of endurance, and most of them (if not, all) were resistant to Water attacks. The Dragonites took 4-5 Bites to take down… which wouldn’t sound so bad if they didn’t have the all powerful HYPER BEAM move. Hyper Beam does a TON of damage, though it leaves the user drained and unable to attack the next turn. Which is good, because I needed the time to heal SupaSoaka after those, usually. Also, the Dragon Rage attack, while not as powerful, still took a neat chunk of health off. Eventually, though, I beat him, and I was the new Champion! Oh, wait…

Dammit! Friggin’ Gary beat me here! (Yes, I named him Gary, not Blue…) Jerk. I’m just going to have to teach him a lesson. I honestly thought he was going to be harder, but I guess his strategy of using varied Pokemon types made it easy on me. There weren’t too many that were resistant to Water attacks, with two weak against it, so for the most part I was able to OHKO most of his Pokemon. Taking down his Venusaur was difficult, though… it was only nine levels under me, and with it having my weakness, I was taking a good amount of damage. However, Gary was quickly done for, for him to whine about it not being fair. Sucker.

In the end, the thing about doing a solo challenge, no matter who you choose is that… it doesn’t quite feel like you’re playing Pokemon. One of the main catches of the game is you “Gotta Catch ‘Em All!”, but you don’t do that with a solo run. Sure, I caught a few “HM Slaves” so I can use Cut and Strength when I needed to move on, but that’s it. My Pokedex rounded out at a meager five, and I’m sure Professor Oak was extremely disappointed with me. The excitement of going to a new area to find new Pokemon, and that small chance of finding that rare Pokemon and the anxiety of trying to catch the Legendary birds without using that Master Ball… all gone. What you’re left with is basically a normal RPG where you have only one party member (that happens to be a monster). Since the game’s meant for something different, overpowering was pretty easy, and most of the game’s just spent Biting everything to death (which sounds quite morbid). It just sucks the fun out of it.

I think that sometime, though probably not soon, I’ll try another Solo run. However, I’ll do my homework, and pick a Pokemon more worthy of the challenge I want. Also, I’m thinking I’ll do a game for the Gold/Silver/Crystal series (though probably not the upcoming remakes… I want to enjoy them the way they were meant to be), since I think it’ll be more interesting. With two leagues to fight through and lots of added features to second generation, I think that’ll add a lot to the fun as well. Guess we’ll see when I decide to try it out again!

WHO’S THAT POKEMON!?! If you’re in my age group, chances are you were shouting the answe

WHO’S THAT POKEMON!?! If you’re in my age group, chances are you were shouting the answer at the tv screen because it was so damn obvious and you were that much of a tool to the Nintendo Machine. You owned the cards, you owned both versions of the same friggin’ game, you traded via Link Cable with friends on the schoolbus to make that Graveler evolve dammit, and you watched the television series religiously every day at 3pm on the kids WB. You knew each pocket critter’s stats, you knew where all the rare ones hid, and you knew that rock candy cheat was for pussies unwilling to truly dedicate themselves to the cause. This list is dedicated to those fans who LIVED the Pokemon experience.

The following are the Peanut Gallery’s key Pokemon for perfect success in Pokemon Red/Blue. This team was carefully crafted over hundreds of painsaking hours studying player’s guides and is therefore the best, the greatest, the all-time 6 creature team that guarantees great success… That and they come with some of the most bizarre Pokedex descriptions. Some of you may question this list. Others will point out “better” options. To those people, I say “Suck it, Trebek” (and also, see the Honorable Mentions list before whining).

6. Electabuzz

Ladies, check out the guns.

From Pokedex: “Electabuzz feeds on electrical currents. Its methods of securing its food vary: during thunderstorms, an Electabuzz climbs to the highest place possible, in hopes that it will be struck by lightning.”

Apparently, Electabuzz adheres to the ‘Highlander’ method of getting stronger.

5. Primeape

From Pokedex: “Vicious and frenzied, even making eye contact with it can anger it. If it is annoyed, it will never stop chasing the offender. Its frenzies are most dangerous when forcefully woken up, as it relentlessly chases the quarry while half-asleep.”

This is exactly the kind of Fighting/Earth Pokemon you want, the one prone to killing a dude just for looking at them wrong. Get this monkey a Bloods bandana.

4. Haunter

The ultimate female pleasurer. Gene Simmons eat your heart out.

From Pokedex: “Haunter is said to be from another dimension. They seem to eat by first paralyzing their opponent with Lick, then draining a bit of their life force.”

So what you’re saying is, Haunter is the ghost of a pervert. That’s the perfect character for a kids’ game.

3. Magmar

Come 'ere and give Uncle Magmar a hug.

From Pokedex: “It has the ability to expel orange-colored fire from every part of its body, including its mouth.”

……………riiight…………… EVERY part of its body. Not to mention, as The Heap has pointed out, Magmar’s head looks like a flaming ass. Sporting two flaming assholes sounds dangerous, which is exactly what’s needed for this team.

2. Alakazam

You see how long this thing is?!?! The MOUSTACHE, you sicko.

From Pokedex: “Alakazam has a long, gold moustache – nonetheless, some Alakazam are female, though females have dramatically smaller moustaches than males.”

You know you’re a badass when your women also rock facial hair. Don’t believe me? Ask the dwarves.

1. Gyarados

From Pokedex: “Gyarados tend to be very aggressive, and are powerful enough to destroy entire cities. They have a reputation for appearing where there is conflict, and annihilating everything with its Hyper Beam attack. Rampages like this have been known to last upwards of an entire month, and will not end until everything around them has been destroyed.”

It wouldn’t be a true Japanese experience without a giant city-leveling monster in it. Also, for those studying for SAT IIs, Death Star:Alderaan :: Gyarados:Japanese Cities…the correct answer is most certainly not that pretender Godzilla.

***HONORABLE MENTIONS***

Scyther – This is what you get when you solve (Praying Mantis + Ninja – Black Ninja Outfit^(Japanese Weird Factor)

Jigglypuff – It has a Britney Spears-esque ability to get more destructive the fatter it gets.

Mr. Mime – While Haunter may be the ghost of a pervert, Mr. Mime is clearly a child rapist pretending to be a Pokemon to get close to children. You heard it here first.

Eevee – This is exactly what every pet should be: OBEDIENT. If I want my cat to suddently become a fire-breathing Tiger, I should only have to tell it to (and give it some trippy ass rock). I shouldn’t have to slap it into some stupid outfit for Halloween.

***************************************

Angry Reader: “Where are the legendary birds? Where’s Mewtwo. Did you even play this game?!”

Me: “Did your mommie raise a little bitch or were you just born that way. I say it’s Throwdown Time. You. Me. Pokemon Stadium on the 56″ screen. Our original teams. Want some?!?! Of course not. You don’t even own the adaptor to let you play GBC games on the N64 do you. I thought so.”

More useless than R.O.B.

The video game industry, just like the film industry, is a very successful one, where products are not rated by what critics said, but by what consumers dictated. This is why we still have Eddie Murphy and Sonic, although I would rather Sonic to be redeemed. On this list there are four games that have been mostly overlooked by consumers (one hasn’t) and that if people had gone out and bought them, then they would have noticed how amazing these games were.

5 Video Games that Deserve a Sequel

5) Eternal Darkness: Sanity Requiem (Silicon Knights) (Gamecube)

For a console that has been branded as “kiddie-console,” Eternal Darkness, had a mature story that was much needed for the Gamecube. Sadly, even though it was praised by critics, the game didn’t have garner gamers money recognition. Perhaps because it was for a “kiddie-console” where said kids couldn’t have played it – it was rated M for Mature. Maybe if it had been released also on Xbox and Playstation 2 it would have been a success. The storyline spans 20 centuries letting players take on the role of 12 different characters through the ages, from a Roman Centurion to a priest during the period of the Inquisition. What’s fantastic and different is the gameplay. If your character gets hurt, they will start to lose their sanity and weird things are going to start happening – to you! Your television volume will go up and down, your screen will fade to black. In this game, your sanity will be at play! Hopefully one of this game will get a much deserving sequel.

4) Psychonauts (Majesco) (Xbox, Playstation 2, PC)

Psychonauts comes from the incredible mind of Tim Schafer – who will soon release the heavy metal game Brutal Legend with Jack Black – the game was praised and welcomed by critics, but again gamers weren’t too crazy about it – except the ones who did play it. In Pyschonauts you take the role of Rasputín, a boy who has been sent to Psychic camp to improve his abilities and become a Psychonaut, but at the camp something’s gone wrong. People, even students, are losing their brains – literally! It’s up to Rasputin to uncover what’s going on and return the brains to their owners. Each level of the game will take you into the mind of the camp counselors or students, as you know each “brain is it’s own world” and this game welcomes it. From World War types of scenarios to worlds of Disco and clubs, this game will take you anywhere. When it ended, it left the promise for more to come yet no news have been heard. Hopefully Brutal Legend will be a success and Tim Schafer can take another risk.

3) Zombies Ate My Neighbors (LucasArts) (SNES)

Zombies ate my neighbors is what I considered the “father” of Left 4 Dead. In Zombies Ate My Neighbors you can choose to play as a boy or a girl and on each video game chapter, which acts like a B-horror film, you try to save your neighbors; these neighbors can be from cheerleaders to babies and that old mean lady. What are you saving them from exactly? Other than zombies you have lizard men, giant antes, mummies, water creatures and even a chainsaw wielding Jason Vorhees look-a-like. What makes this game even better is that you can even play with a friend, yes co-op is enabled – of course offline, we are talking 1993 here! If this game were remade, or had a sequel, today, with all of it’s campy vibe it can truly be a success.

2) Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy (Midway) (Xbox, Playstation 2)

This is one of the best and most overlooked games of the past generation. In Psi-Ops you assume the role of Nick, a soldier who had his memory wiped by the government so he could be captured my Mindgate and infiltrate their base – is there really any other kind – while on the inside you are being helped by a partner who you are not sure if you can really trust. Although the game sounds very generic and the story is somewhat predictable, it redeems itself with gameplay. As the game progresses you will start remembering who you are and what you can do. What can you do? You can move things with your mind (telekinesis), start fires (pyrokinesis), drain minds, control minds , aura view and remote viewing. It’s not only what you do, but how you do it that counts and in Psi-Ops, Midway, let’s you have all the fun you want. Set a crate on fire and then use your telekinesis to throw it to someone else, get on top of a crate and lift it up to reach new levels, why lose your life fighting when you can take over a soldier to do all the killing for you. There are many ways to get things done and it really doesn’t get old. The game was obviously done with a sequel, which hasn’t happened, in mind, leaving gamers without a real conclusion. Honestly, this game done today with what current consoles can do, it will be amazing. Throw that some online multiplayer (I don’t really think co-op is needed here) and Trophies/Achievements and Midway will have a hit. Sad thing is, Midway declared bankruptcy, so this may never happen.

1) Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow (Gameboy) (Nintendo)

Yes, Pokémon deserves a sequel. I don’t mean more Pokémon Platinum, or Pokémon Silver or Pokemon Gold. I mean a real sequel. One where you get to do more than the same thing over and over again. It still baffles me how kids keep buying the same repetitive game, no matter how it is explained. Pokémon is a very successful franchise and it can take risks of trying something new. They have a bit, for example: Pokémon Ranger, but they can do better. Nintendo, it is time to take chances!

2. Pokemon Red, Blue and Green

4. The Sims

Super Mario Bros. 2 para NES, 1988: 10 millones de copias

Rating: 10 Out of 10

We all remember Pokemon when it first came out. It was the biggest thing that hit the Game Boy for a while and everybody was playing it. This game had 151 creatures that you had to catch and you had to also be the League Champion. Along with those quests, there is also min quests. Also there is multiplayer using the link player support you can either fight each other, or trade Pokemon. The only problem was, in order to get all 151, you needed both Red and Blue Versions of the game.

Little needs to be said about the Gameboy. It is the Godfather of handheld systems. Video Games would not be where they are today without the Gameboy. Whether your first Gameboy was the good ol’ grey fatty, the slim and stylish Pocket, or the Color, you knew that you were in for a treat. Without further adieu, here are the Top 9 Gameboy/Pocket/Color games as selected by the Mediarahan staff.

#9 Kirby's Dreamland

In the pantheon of great Nintendo heroes Kirby is often overlooked. This is a shame because Kirby’s dreamland is one of the most fun and charming platformers ever created. There’s just something appealing about guiding a gluttonous cute pink puffball through hordes enemies, yum.

P.S. I’ve always wondered why he’s white on the box art.

#8 Metal Gear Solid

This alternate universe Metal Gear aimed to get its sneak in while you’re on the move. The Gameboy Color’s Metal Gear Solid blended the revolutionary game play of the original Metal Gear games, with the over the top story telling of the Solid games. It also used a mission based system which was perfect for the pick up and play needs of the Gameboy. Sadly, David Hayter’s voice could not be used but we’ll forgive that for a great MGS experience.

#7 Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land

The first time I heard about this game I was in total shock. The main enemy from Super Mario Land 2 is now the protagonist!? Not just that but he wasn’t after Mario, he was after all the treasure in the land. Wario is truely one greedy fuck, it’s no wonder those pirate ducks on the cover are pissed. Wario Land, much like Super Mario Land 2, brought many different powerups for Wario to use, my personal favorite was the Dragon hat which shot fire somehow. On top of the enjoyable level design, there were a shit-load of secrets to find in this game, which would require a few playthroughs to find them all without a copy of Nintendo Power. Put all of that together and you can actually have a really fun road trip.

#6 The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX

Link’s first outing on the Gameboy was also my (TripV’s) first experience with Nintendo’s grey fatty. The game was simply flawless. Every dungeon was expertly crafted with unique items like Roc’s Feather, which allowed Link to jump. Zelda DX took all the greatness of Link’s Awakening and colorized it making it the definitive version of a beloved classic. It also added a special color dungeon to give veterans of the original a little more.

#5 Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins

When I think of the Gameboy, this, along with its predecessor, are some of the first games I think about. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is without a doubt the best original Mario game on the Gameboy system. Following in Super Mario World’s footsteps, Super Mario Land 2 presented Mario with some new power-ups (bunny ears and bubble), as well as different takes on old ones (fire flower). The biggest downside of this game is that it is short, but that is easily forgotten because the fifth playthrough is just as fun as the first. This game is the first Mario game that doesn’t involve resucing a princess and due to that introduces Wario who is one of my favorite Nintendo characters. All of above reasons places this classic at #5.

#4 Pokémon Blue/Red

TripV might not have jumped on the Pokémon bandwagon back in 1998, but I sure did. Starting with the anime and trading cards, then moving on to the game, I was in a Pokémon craze for two whole years of my life so It should come as no surprise that I can still name the first 151 Pokémon. A game like this brought a whole new style of RPGs to America that had been around in Japan since the original Megami Tensei games. The “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” formula is very addictive and successful, not to mention fun. I probably don’t need to say anything more about this game, because everyone has played this game in one way or another.

#3 Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

I remember getting this game on my 12th birthday as I requested, and it did not let down. In fact it exceeded in everyway possible. The last time I played the original Super Mario Bros. prior to receiving this game was probably 8 years earlier, back in 1991 before my dad decided to send our NES away. Aside from the original Super Mario Bros., this game threw in the Lost Levels, as well as a few bonus modes, such as challenge mode(added a hidden yoshi egg and 5 red coins), a vs. race mode, you vs. boo (race against boo), and the toy box which kept all the mini games and non playable extras where you could really waste a lot of time. I remember you could edit the opening sound in the Toy Box when the game first loads, and my brother spent a lot of time putting in different riffs from jazz songs, a pretty cool extra if you ask me. If this was still in stores today, I would have no problem dropping $30 on it.

#2 The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages

When deciding the order of the Top 9 Gameboy games, TripV was trying to put Zelda DX above the Oracle games. Now I understand where he is coming from and I know that Link’s Awakening is a true handheld classic, but these games took everything that made Link’s Awakening as well as the N64 iterations great and improved upon them. It also must be noted that he did not play these games and that will be a perminant stain on his gamer record. He decided I was right when I told him that after beating both games and linking them together you get to fight Ganon, the pig version. I asked him what other games you fight the Pig version of Ganon and without much hesitation decided to heed my judgement. Most people will rank these games seperately, but it just wouldn’t be right to play one and not the other, heck I remember having a hard time deciding which game to start on. In the end I started on Seasons because the Nintendo Power guidebook started there also. Both games were classic Zelda titles from the beginning and had every bit of charm that prior games had. Back in April of 2001 the Gameboy Advance was on the horizon, and with these two games coming out literally a month before the Advance, I would say this is a great way to close out 12 years of handheld gaming while leading into the future. If you picked both of these up back in 2001, you’ll agree that instead of putting down $30 each for two new Zelda titles, you really paid $60 for a great Zelda experience ($75 if you’re like me and got the guide). The Oracle games delivered two of the best weeks of my adolescent gaming career.

#1 Tetris DX

Well, we’re finally at #1. Over 12 years of portable games and only 1 can be the best, that is why we have chosen Tetris DX. This is exactly what the gameboy was made for, an endless puzzle game that is filled with nothing but endless fun. Heck the original Gameboy launched with Tetris, and the Gameboy Color launched with Tetris DX. The reason we chose Tetris DX is because it added marathon mode and was in color. This is the game all my friends would play when I lent them my Gameboy on school trips. I would play this at home or in the car, and in some cases whenever I went to someplace boring that my parents forced me to go. It was only last week that I pulled out my Gameboy Advance to play some more of this game. The day my cartridge dies might as well be the day I die, or at least purchase another copy.

Now that we’ve listed our top 9, if anyone else is reading this, feel free to leave any comments or post your personal top 9.

This weeks Classic game of the week might have peoples eyes rolling, but its an undeniable fact that most of the readers checking out this sight have played this game. Pokemon Red and Blue version is our classic game of the week for so many reasons.

The original Pokemon holds a special place in my heart, it does for all three Retail Gamers, Junkfoodtony and Frank Johnson and myself, Roughneck2426. The game was released in Japan on Feb. 27th 1996, over 12 years ago and was released in America on Sep. 1st 1998, almost 10 years ago. The original Pokemon was always where it was at, 150 creatures strong, the best line-up to date in my opinion. It was original, new and something totally fresh and inventive when it came out on the original Gameboy. A game like this, a hybrid RPG, collecting, tamagotchi game, was never seen on a hand held, let alone a console.

When this game first came out it was reviewed well but never flew off the shelves. It wasn’t until the Pokemon cartoon hit on Saturday mornings did this game catch fire and fly off the shelves like hot cakes. To even fuel the fire they made a Pokemon trading card game (TCG) which was also pretty damn awesome.

The series that is Pokemon has extended over 493 different Pokemon, a trading card game, a hit cartoon show, toys and merchandise, it can even be seen on cars and airplanes! (SHIT, the word, Pokemon, comes up in spell checkers for goodness sake!) The Pokemon franchise will never die and will only grow stronger. If it were up to me Nintendo needs to get smart and make a Pokemon MMO. Just think of the ideas people.

Make sure to listen to Retail Gamers latest upcoming episode: 004 to hear all about our Pokemon addictions and sadness, trust me we have some CRAZY stories…for reals.

Call me immature, but I have an infatuation for the first series of Pokemon stuff. The original games were so out of the box that they are some of (<strike>if not the number one</strike> definitely the number one) best selling games of all time. It’s all about fun and grinding and getting that one stubborn Pokemon caught so you can complete your collection. The games were just magnificent. I have been stuck to FireRed (basically a remake of the original Red) all this break.

Not only that, but the first season of the Pokemon TV show was actually pretty good. Immediately you were emotionally attached to Ash and his Pikachu, and you actually wanted him to become a master of his craft. Funnily enough, after a few seasons the tagline “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” was dropped, because there was now way he was going to catch all of the Pokemon in the expanding realm of the series. I think he only ends up catching 53 total, and releases a good number of them.

Anyways, now I’m on the hunt for an original Game Boy and the first two original games. I never owned them. It’s that one Christmas present you always ask for but never got. For me it was a Game Boy and Pokemon Blue. I ended up playing Bakke’s copy, or borrowing the game and Game Boy from a guy named John Holden. That’s how I remember the game. Never having my own copy, but playing every chance I got.

So, I think I just lost any cool credibility about anything with this post, but I don’t really care. We all have our dark, guilty pleasures, mine happens to be a cult kiddy game named Pokemon.
