Pokaz specjalny poświęcony wybitnemu polskiemu himalaiście Piotrowi Morawskiemu, tragicznie zmarłemu w tym roku na Dhaulagiri. O ostatniej wspinaczce Piotra oraz o swojej osobistej podróży do Nepalu opowie w piątkowy wieczór Olga Morawska. Dzięki wielkiemu sercu bliskich mi ludzi dwa tygodnie po śmierci Piotrka poleciałam do Nepalu. Wsiadając do samolotu, nie doceniałam tego gestu, tej pomocy, tego pomysłu. Miałam poczucie, że w chwili, gdy przeżywam tragedię swojego życia, ktoś dodatkowo mnie męczy. Nie miałam jednak wystarczająco dużo siły, żeby zaprotestować. Poleciałam. Była to najważniejsza podróż mojego życia. W ciągu dwóch tygodni przeżyłam krańcowe załamanie po to, żeby następnie powrócić z dna rozpaczy, z wielkimi nadziejami na przyszłość. Wróciłam z myślą w głowie i sercu, że człowiek żyje tak długo, jak żyje pamięć o nim. Stąd pomysł na pokaz slajdów. Zaprezentuję na nim między innymi zdjęcia robione przez Piotrka na ostatniej wyprawie, jego dziennik, naszą korespondencję.

Piotr Morawski -  posty na mojej stronie.

Piotr Morawski – jeden z najwybitniejszych polskich himalaistów. Do niego (w zespole z Simone Moro) należy pierwsze w historii wejście zimowe na Shisha Pangma (8027 m) w 2005 roku. Jest także zdobywcą Annapurny Wschodniej (8010 m), Broad Peaka (8047 m) – tzw. Tryptyk Himalajski i Nanga Parbat (8125 m). W 2008 roku wszedł na dwa ośmiotysięczniki, Gasherbrum I ( 8068 m) i Gasherbrum II (8035 m). Zginął w tym roku, 8 kwietnia, na Dhaulagiri w Himalajach [news].

Olga Morawska – z wykształcenia socjolog, zawodowo dyrektor wydawniczy, prywatnie wielka miłośniczka sportu, podróżniczka oraz mama Ignacego i Gustawa. Kobieta z wielką pasją życia i nieposkromioną energią. Przez ostatnie 8 lat także dzielna żona swojego męża.

Wyprawa na Nanda Devi East (7434 m) – 70 lat polskiego himalaizmu.

W  lipcu  1939 roku polscy alpiniści zdobyli dziewiczy wierzchołek Nanda Devi East, położony w indyjskich Himalajach. Droga Polaków na szczyt prowadziła  eksponowaną  granią i w tamtym czasie była to najtrudniejsza wspinaczka człowieka w Himalajach. Sukces ten zapoczątkował wiele innych polskich osiągnięć w górach wysokich.

70 lat później, w maju 2009 roku polscy alpiniści ponownie wyruszyli do Indii. Marcin Miotk, Grzegorz Mróz i Jan Lenczowski (kierownik wyprawy, wnuk Jakuba Bujaka – pierwszego zdobywcy Nanda Devi East) zaprezentują relację z tegorocznej wyprawy, której celem było powtórzenie drogi Polaków z 1939 roku.

Interesującym elementem pokazu będzie prezentacja oryginalnego materiału filmowego z   wyprawy   w  1939  roku,  odnalezionego w Londynie po kilkudziesięciu latach poszukiwań.

In case you are thinking of purchasing the new global version of Amazon’s Kindle for Christmas, be aware that there are still quite a few places that the global version will NOT work.  I was disappointed to find that the new version still will not work in my country.

Apparently the new global version will only work in SOME countries.   I thought it would be helpful to most expats to have a complete list of which countries it will, or will not work in (below).

It’s also interesting to note the PATTERN of groups of countries where the Kindle doesn’t work–some countries probably lack satellite coverage or delivery systems, while others probably don’t WANT readers to be able to download whatever they want by satellite.

Dzien dobry i witam!

I had no idea before I moved here what it would be like living in this city. Sure, I’d visited many times before and I thought I had an idea, but in reality I didn’t have a clue! Often as tourists in a foreign country we only see the veneer of a place without getting to know what it’s really like. I’d like to share some of the “real” Gdansk on these pages and what better way to start than with an introduction to the city.

Gdansk is located on the northern coast of Poland. Geographically speaking it’s on the same latitude (I hold my hand up – I had to check if it was longitude or latitude that goes across the globe!) as the northern tip of Germany, the mountains of the Lake District in the UK, large parts of Canada (sorry, but Canada is just so huge!), the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea, the vastness of Russia, and Vilnius in Estonia. Not surprisingly, with these other places as latitudinal neighbours, the climate of Poland is temperate. Still with me? Temperate, from my days in geography classes means cold, wet, and dark in winter (don’t I know it!) and warm and sunny in summer. Typical summer temperatures are in the mid 20s C and it can get down to -15C or so in the middle of winter. Put more simply, in the summer it’s fantastic and in the winter it’s depressing!

Gdansk is actually part of a group of three cities (Sopot, Gdynia and Gdansk) which have merged together over time to become the Tricity area (Trójmiasto in Polish) with a population of about 800,000 people of which Gdansk has about 500,000. So Gdansk is by no means a small city.

Gdansk itself has a lot going for it, not least its history. The opening salvos of World War II were fired not even a mile off the coast of Gdansk and the fall of Communism was heralded in the now ghostlike shipyards of the Old Port by the iconic Lech Wałęsa (pronounced Leck Vowensa phonetically…oh what fun it will be to go over the unfathomable polish language in another post!). If that’s not enough for you then Gdansk has some fantastic architecture (if you ignore the ugly, grey communist apartment blocks that are scattered throughout the Tricity area like giant lego bricks).

If architecture and history don’t float your boat then head along to Sopot – the middle city of the string of the Trójmiasto. In Poland, Sopot is probably most well known as a coastal “spa” town. I put “spa” in inverted comas because as far as I can tell there are no spas in Sopot, and you may as well replace the word “spa” with “party”. Sopot is definitely known as THE party town in the summer. There are more beach nightclubs and bars than you can shake a stick at and the young and beautiful make Sopot their own in the summer months – basking on the beach under the glorious sun and endless blue skies by day and partying under the stars by night. Sopot also boasts the excellent Monte Cassino street which is full of, you guessed it, bars and restaurants with the odd shop here and there. Finally Sopot is the proud owner of the longest wooden pier in Europe which measures in at a deceptively long 515 metres. The pier is a perfect place for a stroll on a summer’s evening, if you don’t mind paying the 10 or so zloty charged to gain entrance. If your timing is good you can catch the Orange Film festival which shows nightly at the end of August on the pier. For the romantics among us, you get to watch a classic film on the pier with your kohanie (sweetheart) in the open air in a deck chair – don’t forget to bring a blanket and/or a discreetly stashed bottle of wine! It’s a perfect way to end a summer evening.

And finally to Gdynia, the last jewel in the Trójmiasto crown. I have to say that I don’t really know alot about Gdynia because I’ve only really driven through it on the way to other places. What I do know is that Gdynia is the proud owner of the hideous carbuncle that is the Sea Tower, and also a big, old, blue ship in the harbour which I can’t remember the name of now (if you know anything about this ship please add a comment). If you know what Gdynia has to offer the visitor I’d love to know and I’ll be happy to update the article.

So there you have it – an introduction to Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia, the beautiful cities on the north coast of Poland. If you’ve got this far, well done and as well as learning about this lovely part of the world you’ve the added bonus of learning a few polish words along the way (oh just wait until I do a post on learning polish!)

     Preserving species and their habitats is important for ecosystems to self-sustain themselves. Yet, the pressures to destroy habitat for logging, illegal hunting, and other challenges are making conservation a struggle.

    The variety of life on Earth, its biological diversity is commonly referred to as biodiversity. The number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth.

   

    Appropriate conservation and sustainable development strategies attempt to recognize this as being integral to any approach. Almost all cultures have in some way or form recognized the importance that nature, and its biological diversity has had upon them and the need to maintain it. Yet, power, greed and politics have affected the precarious balance.

For example, a larger number of plant species means a greater variety of crops; greater species diversity ensures natural sustainability for all life forms; and healthy ecosystems can better withstand and recover from a variety of disasters.

Loss of Biodiversity and Extinctions

It is feared that human activity is causing massive extinctions. From various animal species, forests and the ecosystems that forests support, marine life. The costs associated with deteriorating or vanishing ecosystems will be high. However, sustainable development and consumption would help avert ecological problems.

Settlement of payments problems are the cause of an increasing number of bankruptcy of Polish companies. In the first half of 2009 the courts declared the provisions of the Bankruptcy 309 companies, representing an increase of 53% against the same period last year. The transport and logistics sector recorded 27 of the provisions of bankruptcy, as compared with 2008 (5 bankruptcies) an increase of 440%.

It is even worse. Many small truck businesses eliminates activity (or transport), without making formal insolvency procedures. This occurs also in transport, where transport is dominated by small companies – says Joanna Syzdół, director of the office recovery Coface Poland. Increase in bankruptcy in this sector are the result of the impact of many factors – the decline in exports vehicles from Europe to the U.S. to several dozen percent, Russia’s difficult to protect its market, the high price of oil, inflationary factors, rising costs of capital increase due to an “difficult Strippable” or restricted by banks . It is the first major project the Norvegian-Jewish singer Bente Kahan supports with her fondation:

“In 2007 a consortium of these two institutions – together with the municipality of Wroclaw – was established. The consortium managed by the Bente Kahan Foundation is very effective at acquiring financial means for the complete renovation of the White Stork Synagogue and its courtyard. The restoration works that have begun in 2008 and will last until the end of 2009 will cost about 10 million PLN. This stage of renovation will be financed by the EEA Grants, funds of the non-EU countries, (members of the European Economic Area) won by the consortium in a competition for the projects for the renovation of historic buildings organized by the Polish disposer of the grant (the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage) as well as by the municipality of Wroclaw and the owner – The Association of the Religious Communities in Poland.

The synagogue will keep its ritual functions but it will also strenghten its role as a modern international centre for culture and education including the Jewish Museum that will be established in the basement and on the balconies of the temple. The city will finally regain the Jewish part of its soul.

The White Stork Synagogue is yet again a place of worship – its walls resonate with the sounds of Jewish prayers led by the rabbis Ivan Cane and – since 2006 – Icchak Rapoport.

The Wroclaw Jews gathered here for special occasions and times when the old praying hall is too small to house every member of the community and its guests. The synagogue is also a dynamic centre of Jewish culture – a place of exhibitions, concerts, theatrical performances workshops and meetings. The temple benefits from the great acoustics in its interior as well as from its size – it can accommodate a couple of hundred people.” (FBK, website)
