An article in Britain’s Daily Mail documents the admiration that John F. Kennedy had for Adolf Hitler. You also learn where that came from: his father. Joe Kennedy was a big admirer of Hitler’s and even tried to meet with Hitler early on in the war, in an attempt to smooth things over. Here are some key passages: President Kennedy’s travelogues and letters chronicling his wanderings through Germany before WWII, when Adolf Hitler was in power, have been unearthed and show him generally in favour of the movement that was to plunge the world into the greatest war in history. ‘Fascism?’ wrote the youthful president-to-be in one. ‘The right thing for Germany.’ In another; ‘What are the evils of fascism compared to communism?’ This was before, of course, Fascism and Communism revealed themselves to be largely the same thing. Kennedy did get the assessment of communism right! Some more: And on August 21, 1937 – two years before the w
The state of Maine is a period of conflict. On one side, you have dumbass governor Paul LePage who refuses to pass any spending bill until hospitals are paid, and on the other side, you have the state congress who wants to add about 70,000 Mainers to the MaineCare system and also get bonds already approved by the voters placed in action. It seems that neither side is giving in anytime soon. However, I believe that the governor is more in the wrong than the state congress. Here’s why: When I was in the hospital for about a week a few years ago, I noticed that my bill had charges for things that I NEVER had done. The problem is that it is always the hospital’s word against yours. Since I had insurance at the time, I decided not to fight it and just accept what occurred on the bill. After the insurance was paid off, I still had nearly $1000 to pay on my own. Could more of this bill been covered by insurance if some of these charges didn’t exist? Quite possibly, but again I decide

CHICAGO (CBS) – A 3rd grader from the South Side has become an Internet sensation, after delivering a rousing speech at a rally against school closings earlier this week. WBBM Newsradio’s Bernie Tafoya reports there have been more than 88,000 views on YouTube of 9-year old Asean Johnson speaking at the podium for nearly three minutes on Monday at a protest rally in Daley Plaza. [cbs-audio url=http://cbschicago.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/mp3_bc__carts_garvey-bt-report1-may23.mp3 size=340px download=false name="3rd Grader Slams Mayor" artist="WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya"] He might be pint-sized, but Asean had no problem standing up to Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett. “Rahm Emanuel thinks that we all are toys,” Asean said. “We are going to City Hall, we’re confronting Rahm Emanuel. We are not toys. We are not going, not without a fight.” He was fighting to keep open Marcus Garvey Elementary School, which was one of the four scho
John Steinbeck’s 1942 novel The Moon is Down is about people of a small village occupied by Nazi forces somewhere in Northern Europe. They become sullen and their obedience is bought at an increasingly high price. Free people cannot remain conquered. Re-reading The Moon is Down left me with nagging questions about the extent to which the People of the United States remain free. Those questions did not arise when I first read it, many years ago. It now seems obvious that we are less free than we once were; yet perhaps (one can at least hope that) there are still enough to make a difference by remembering freedom, remaining free and hence remaining beyond conquest. It has never been easy. One of my favorite bloggers today posted an essay titled When Abuse of Power is Considered a Virtue. It asserts that liberals see all conservatives as evil for daring to be against Big Government. Therefore, anything they do to fight that evil must be virtuous. Look at this quote of Kirsten Powe
Until a few months ago, I’d never even heard the prefix cis- outside of a chemistry textbook. Now I have been called out more than once for using it in the last few weeks. I admit that I don’t find it to be a particularly elegant or natural prefix. Regardless, I have slipped cis into my vocabulary quite easily since I first encountered it a few months ago. In situations where transwomen and non-transwomen are being discussed together, cis is a convenient way to make sure that things are clearly distinguished. However, the so-called RadFem movement doesn’t like cis at all. They think that it’s unnecessary, a label foisted on women by men who want to marginalize them. If they had their way, we’d all stop using it. So, should we stop using cis as a gender prefix? I think an individual’s answer to that question speaks to how one views transpeople. For example, are transwomen women or are they not-women? If one’s worldview says that women is an umb
MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS SF) – Gov. Jerry Brown Thusday urged scientists to dedicate themselves to convincing a distracted public and news media about the dangers of climate change and other potential disruptions to human life. Brown, speaking to about 100 people at the Water, Energy and Smart Technology Summit at the NASA Ames Research Park at Moffett Field, said, “We are really in a war here. You have to reach people who are disinterested and somewhat hostile.” “This is about activism,” Brown continued. “This is about converting people. This is an important challenge. If it’s like this five years from now, it’s over.” [cbs-audio url="http://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/nyc.podcast.play.it/media/d0/d0/d1/d2/dV/dI/dX/12VIX_4.MP3" size="" download="" name="Brown Presses Climate Change Crusade In Mountain View" artist="Mike Colgan"] At the summit, Brown signed a 20-page statement about climate disruption, extinctions, pollution and population growth that was also signed by more than
In a remarkable speech earlier today, President Barack “Don’t call me Barry” Obama announced that his administration has new guidelines for using remotely piloted serial vehicles, or “drones.” “I am pleased to announce that we will simplify the operational use of these robot planes by means of a streamlined plan so simple even an IRS agent can follow it,” said Obama in describing the plan. To summarize, the new operational plan limits targets to two categories: politically motivated opponents and critical reporters. Politically motivated opponents can include terrorists, conservative bloggers and Rush Limbaugh, while critical reporters include pretty much anyone who asks follow up questions of Jay Carney. Additionally, the plan includes improved operational protocols. Under the new guidelines, only the President, Vice President, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Secretaries of Homeland Security, Treasury, Defense and Agriculture, the Directors of t
I’m opposed to the Marriage (Same-Sex) Bill. I have no problems with gay – or, as the PC term is now, LGBT – equality as a general concept, i.e. that LGBT people should be treated equally to any other citizens and should not be discriminated against. However, I do take issue with some of the ways LGBT equality has been implemented in practice, such as the requirement under the Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007 for adoption agencies to take on gay and lesbian couples on an equal basis to heterosexual couples. That has meant that many Christian adoption agencies – which were generally recognised as providing an excellent service – have had to close, as they took the view that it is in the best interests of the child to be adopted by opposite-sex, preferably married, couples. By holding out for this view and not taking on same-sex couples, they would have run the risk of breaking the law. Gay, or same-sex, marriage had, and arguably still has
