In this Photoshop tutorial I’ll show you how to add a comic book effect to an ordinary photo using a few layers, the Cutout and Poster Edges filters and a few different layer blend modes.

This is a little technique I picked up at Photoshop World and have tweaked to my own preferences. Because each photo is different you’ll want to experiment a little with the settings to get your best result. I’ve found that although this technique can be used for most photos, there are certain ones that have a much more pleasing final result.

Although this effect can be applied to any image with decent results, I recommend starting with a fairly large photo (mine is 2160×1440px). We’ll be using the Color halftone filter later in the lesson which has a 4 pixel minimum diameter and if your starting image is too small you’ll end up with more of a polka dot effect than anything resembling a comic book effect. Obviously I’ll have to resize my large image for each step in the tutorial and I’ve reiszed the .PSD download at the end of the lesson after applying the effects at the large scale.

All that being said, lets jump right in and build some setup layers. My photo is of my six year old nephew who was obviously getting a little too comfortable on uncle HERO’s Harley.
The first order of business will be to duplicate the original photo layer by pressing Command-J (PC: Ctrl-J). We will be duplicating the layer a few times, so memorize the keyboard shortcut now. Name this new layer
As it’s name implies, we will now soften this layer using a blur filter. Normally I prefer the Gaussian blur but for this tutorial we need the edges of our subject to stay crisp so we’ll be using the Surface blur filter. Click Filter>Blur>Surface Blur from the main menu to bring up the Surface Blur dialog box. For this particular image size I’ve found that a Radius of 5 and a Threshold of 15 works nicely. Click OK when you’re done.

For the moment we’re done with the
layer but we need the effect to also be visible on our next layer so lets duplicate the layer (I said we’d be doing it… do you remember the keyboard shortcut?). Call this new layer

Desaturated

and like it’s name implies we’ll be desaturating it. Choose Image>Adjustments>Desaturate to strip the color from the layer or simply use the keyboard shortcut Command-Shift-U (PC: Ctrl-Shift-U).

Now we need to load the luminosity of our image as a selection and the easiest way to do this is to switch over to the Channels tab in the Layers palette and holding down the Command (PC: Ctrl) key while clicking on the RGB Channel’s layer icon.
What we actually want to do however is select the exact opposite (the darkness of the image), so lets invert the selection by choosing Select>Inverse from the main menu or by pressing the keyboard shortcut Command-Shift-I (PC: Ctrl-Shift-I).

The Soften layer will be acting as the color layer for the comic book effect, but at the moment it contains far too much detail so lets use one of Photoshop’s Artistic filters to consolidate the color a little. From the main menu choose Filter>Artistic>Cutout.

The Filter window will appear with the Cutout settings visible. Set the Number of Levels to 8, the Edge Simplicity to 0 and the Edge Fidelity to 3. Click OK when you’re done.

Since the Cutout filter has dulled our color and typically comic book colors are quite vivid, lets press Command-J (PC: Ctrl-J) to duplicate the layer and then switch the new layer’s blend mode to Soft Light, effectively giving our colors more vibrance.

Now it’s time to create the halftone dot pattern that will complete the comic book look for our photo. From the main menu choose Filter>Pixelate>Color Halftone. For the size of my image I’m going to use a setting of 8 Pixels for the Maximum Radius setting, depending on the size of your photo you may have to play with this value to get a result that looks right. The minimum pixel value for the Maximum Radius setting is 4 pixels which is why it is important to start with a large image to begin with, otherwise you’ll end up with something that looks like polka dots threw up all over it.

We’re now done working with the layer mask, so lets click on the layer’s actual thumbnail to switch our working area back to the actual layer. You’ll notice that the brackets that were around the layer mask thumbnail before are now around the layer thumbnail now. Lets also change the way this layer interacts with the layers below by changing the layers blend mode to Soft Light allowing more of the color to come through while nicely retaining the halftone effect.
This overall effect sometimes ends up producing an image that’s a little darker than I prefer, so to remedy this I’m going to add a Curves Adjustment layer by clicking on the Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette (it’s the one that looks like a circle that’s split into two halves) and by choosing Curves from the menu. This will open up the Curves dialog box where I’ll grab the center point of the line and drag it up and to the left just a little to lighten the mid tones of the image while leaving the black and white points where they are.

[Also known as, the return.]

♥

Merry Christmas! I write this post on the Eve, though. Oh wait, it is just as of now midnight. ANYWAY, not the point. So I’m really very sad that I have not had anything to post for more than a month now! Pathetic. There have been outfits, but I have not had the time because I’ve been so busy doing christmas shopping and the like, as well as finishing up the semester and finals in general. AWFUL. But now I have a month to redo the few outfits I skipped over and post new ones! Sweeeeeeeet.

♥

This particular outfit was for my Christmas Eve dinner with my family. The title is sarcastic; it’s really not festive at all. But it is fancy and fun and RODARTE? I mean not real Rodarte but a girl can dream.

♥

- black tulle dress [rodarte4target]

- black dot thigh highs [parents]

- black ankle strap heels [bcbg]

- black militaryesque jacket [a|x]

- black headband [old navy]

- black tulle bow earrings [me~]

- makeup: silver eyeshadows, fluildline gel liner in blacktrack, zoom fast black lash mascara [sephora, MAC]

♥

SO this dress is from the recent Rodarte for Target line. Andddd I love it. We just got hit with about two feet of snow at home, and so I wasn’t able to go to Target with my mom the day the line was first available because we were stuck in our house. UGH, however, my parents went out the next two days and brought me back three dresses and two shirts. Such the best. This dress is pretty great. Adorable, good for warmer weather too. However, it is ridiculously staticky in the winter because of all the dryness and tulle. But still totally worth wearing. I liked matching it with these stockings because I’ve had them for a while now, and I feel like all of a sudden this kind of dot is very vogue, very in, very fashion layout. And I like it! I also just think they’re sexy as well, la la la. I liked putting the headband with this because it added more black up top, but just a bit, and added yet another bow. [I don't think it's super obvious here but the shoulders on the dress are huge flattened satin bows = awesome] I’ve also been fluffing my hair all day so it actually has some personality and is kinda cute. However, as much as I like all that I’ve just described, my favorite parts are the earrings and the makeup. I made the earrings to go with the outfit because I didn’t have any others that really did it for me. They’re simple – I just tied black tulle in bows and put them in with tiny black studs through the fabric – but I think it’s effective in a subtle way. I’m going to keep them the way they are because I like them so much. The makeup is also just fun and I like it. The shadows mixed really well today, I thought, and I personally like catseye eyeliner and they actually matched each other and were cute. I just liked it. It made me feel dark and dramatic without being too too much. I originally put on my dubonnet lipstick but I think it just made it feel too too dark and I felt weird so I just put on plain lip balm for smoothness.

♥

I’m glad to be back, however, I’m obviously still trying to figure out the best place to take my pictures, which affects how they turn out and how I can edit them and whatnot, so I’m sorry that these in particular are pretty bad quality, but one day I may be able to update it with better pictures of the dress. Hopefully.

Right now, I’m having a mayjah polka dot moment. I stress “moment” because I’m sure it will pass in due time. But as of now, I can’t get enough.

Lately, I’ve mainly been incorporating polka dots into my accessories – i.e. tights and headbands – because I just don’t have the hutzpah to pull off a head-to-toe ensemble of dots. But while I was in New York, I bought this polka dot dress at the Topshop store. Hopefully I’ll wake up one morning and have the guts to wear it because it’s just so darn adorable.

A few days ago, I was all about the masculine look with oxfords. Today, I’m really feeling girly and what’s more girly than a dress speckled with polka dots?? But at the same time, wouldn’t a pair of oxfords work perfectly with this dress??

Well I knew it was just a matter of time. And it’s now that time. Stampin’ Up! Is saying goodbye to Some stamp sets and Branch Out is one of the stamp sets retiring. If you don’t own it already . . Below is a super quick card I made using the Branch Out stamp set as well as the dormant Stampin’ Up! stamp set list. Look the list over to see if there is a stamp set you’ve been wanting because January 4, 2010 they will be gone for good.

Click On Card To View Full Size

As I said. This card was super easy and quick. I used the stamp-a-ma-jig . Which makes image placement a breeze.

This is the perfect tool to keep you from ever ruining a whole project with one crooked image! The stamp positioner gives you the ability to place an image exactly where you want it, every time. Allows for fast and precise stamp placement.

Malak El Ezzawy, one of our favorite local evening wear designers, tributes the “Little Black

Malak El Ezzawy, one of our favorite local evening wear designers, tributes the “Little Black Dress” this fall with her limited edition collection. What I love, is that it is a perfect addition to my LBD post (posted a couple of weeks ealier, click here). As mentioned before, the LBD transcends time and trends and is the perfect “throw it on and still look chic” dress. A staple in every woman’s wardrobe, just like a man’s white chemise. Below is a sample preview of her limited edition collection, more on this Facebook link, and in store at the Melodies Atelier at 24 Tharwa St., Mohandeseen, ground floor.

Malak’s LBD collection is full of lace, as we call it in Egypt, dentelle. The dress below worn by Menna Shalaby is a dentelle top with a chiffon and tulle skirt and a sexy low back.

Menna Shalaby wearing Malak's LBD

This LBD is the perfectly structured tube dress, which I believe, will be flattering to many. The dress is very futuristic (which I don’t usually like, but this is cool). I also love how the designer utilized both polka dot and stripped prints on one canvas.

Polka Dot & Stripped Structured LBD

This matte paillette, aka sequined, one shoulder LBD is IT! The fall season is all about embellishment & sequins, in addition to asymmetric dresses. I guess this LBD is an ALL-IN-ONE must have!

Matte Paillette One Shoulder LBD

I decided to end this post on the perfectly simple, yet sexy, LBD. The uniqueness of this dress comes not only from its simplicity but its texture. Velvet is a material that faded away for a while, but is back it style and feels very rich.

Last week I blogged about the Christmas Lights turn on as an event. I did give the impression I woul

Last week I blogged about the Christmas Lights turn on as an event. I did give the impression I would be watching this event.

Sadly, I have let down go outdoors followers by not going to watch the lights with half of the city, but instead opting to go to the cinema. This was on account of the rain, which whilst not as treacherous as the fall seen down south, was a bit rubbish. Sadly, my choice to go to the flicks meant that opposed to being stuck in the rain, I was instead stuck in a sweaty auditorium with the other half of the city’s occupants who had the same idea as myself and the mister. (And who munch food. Very loudly. Ergh.)

It did give me a good idea for a relevant blog however, involving how to look good in the rain- If you absolutely have to head out, and don’t have a car, a friendly boy to take you to the cinema, or a bag full of excuses for not doing things…

Granted, if you live in Britain, you may well have spent your life adapting to a life of carrying around spare brushes and bobbles for hair freakouts courtesy of Mother Nature, but here are some ideas for looking good, without the look of a mountaineer, so whether it’s a cute winter walk, an autumnal date, or just Christmas drinks, be prepared.

(Don’t be the girl with her hair under the hand dryers in the ladies loo. Not cute.)

1.Already said it – carry a brush or a comb. Just for the ladies, this one, a man with a comb in his pocket strikes me as, politely, a fool. I’d rather see a syringe poking out of a pair of skinny jeans than a shiny silver comb I’m afraid.

2. Hair bands. Perfect for slicking back drowned rat hair, a hair band can keep the drips out of your eyes, hide the bulk of the dampness, and if you scrunch the main ‘body’ of hair at the back, you get a nice ‘I meant to look like this’ effect. We have just got in a huge batch of (cheap) and pretty awesome Buffs, which come in every style imaginable. (If you have a tasteful imagination mind- the range comprises heaps of colours and designs, skulls, roses, polka dots, flames, mountains… You name it.) These also dry off really quickly, so if you, like me, raced into the cinema with a drenched head, you can whip it off and it will be dry and snug by the time the end credits roll.

3.Gloves. Nothing is less attractive than bright red hands. It gives the look of lobster, and makes your manicure look, claw like. I should know- with a hefty dose of poor blood circulation from my gene pool, I need a glove to keep in some of my skin’s yellowness.

BUT you don’t want to offset your tulip skirt and cute military chic look with hoiking great padded gloves. Look at Thinsulate gloves, which shield you from the weather, without padding you out. Super soft and quick drying, these are perfect for inviting a spot of hand holding. PG fun all round.

4. A cute waterproof jacket is the perfect cover up. Team it with some jeans, go for classic cuts and tones and you have a winner that will last season after season. Sure, flouncy funnel necked styles made from 100% cotton may look cute on the hanger in the shop, but team the wrong coat with rain and you get the scent of wet dog, bobbling and a heaviness to rival Hulk Hogan.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, The Marmot Furlong is uber cute, and it comes with fake fur detailing. It comes in a gilet too, if you plan on making snow angels. And who isn’t?! We also have some new Nike jackets in, which look quite nice and urban. (My body is the first picture in that link, in the little fuschia number. The buyers will see it again. Soon. Ish. )

To avoid chav connotations of the Nike brand, my advice is to wear it, because they look good, and fit the weather (win) but simply avoid styling it up with trainers and a baseball cap. Oh, and stay out of underpasses. And don’t kick pigeons. Or old people.

5. Which leads me on to – hats. If you aren’t a headband girl, go for a super cute beanie hat. Dare 2B have gorgeous named hats like the Liplock, which I would buy for the name alone. Tassles, toggles, pom poms and cute colours, perfect for a cute cover up that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Wear with sleek jeans (That don’t reach the floor- no-one likes to see mud wedged into denim) your classic waterproof jacket, slim gloves and you have a gorgeous, cute, weatherproofed look. And if you refer back to number 1, when you whip off your headband or hat, you can whizz through your mane with a quick brush and you’re good to go.

A perfect, 5 step solution to keeping your cool in the rain. I love it when a plan comes together.

:]

Enjoy.

Exams are finished and the holidays are here! Things where quite sedentary here I know but, now there is ample time to take hundreds of photos, so be sure to get back here for some cool photos of shoots I’m busy organising.

Some excellent news!! I just opened up the Weg (a Afrikaans travel/outdoor magazine) after eliska told me to have a look on page. 65, and saw something I am very excited about! They used a photo of mine I took just after I got my camera about a year ago. This one of the 10 first photos I ever took. It’s of a ladybug trapped amid moss like layer formed on the surface of a pool in the Stellenbosch botanical gardens. You can also see bubbles trapped under the moss which gives the photo another interesting angle.

Thanks for having a look at my blog! And good luck to those still busy with exams.

I wish I were more fashionable. I wish I were better at putting outfits together and knowing what ma

I wish I were more fashionable. I wish I were better at putting outfits together and knowing what matched and what didn’t. I don’t blame my lack of fashion on anyone but myself. I’ve never really been good at matching things, and I’ve never really known if I look OK. It’s been better this year, because my sister, the author of shoe-a-day, is really helpful and honest. I can send her a picture, or put something together on polyvore and if she thinks it’s ugly, or doesn’t match, she lets me know.

She’s trying to get me to mix patterns and to wear t-shirts in more stylish ways, mostly because I own so many t-shirts. I basically lived in t-shirts, jeans and sneakers during high school and college. I have so many concert t-shirts and vintage t-shirts, they rival my husband’s collection.

Well, this weekend I needed to run errands, so I decided to try to make my t-shirt look less like I was wearing PJs, and more like I was wearing a really cool outfit. This is what I wore:

Shirt: Old Navy
Jeans: Old Navy
Vest: Old Navy

Necklace: Modcloth

Shoes: Spring

Sunglasses: H&M

I actually felt really comfortable in this outfit, and I felt like it looked cool, without me trying super hard. The jeans are really skinny, which I’m not used to, but the t-shirt was pretty long, so I thought it looked good. I’ll have to start taking pictures of myself to add here, so it’s not just my polyvore layouts all the time.

Anyway, I also looked up the Pantone colors for the season:

According to the Pantone Web site, these are the hot fall colors. So, I’m trying to figure what I own that is in these colors. I haven’t figured it out yet.

While doing that, I was also still in search of a polka dot shirt that tied at the neck. I’d watched the episode of The Rachel Zoe Project (or whatever it’s called) when she has the Marie Claire photo shoot, and this picture from Kate Spade:

I REALLY wanted a polka dotted shirt with a necktie. All of the pictures from Kate Spade’s new collection made me want it. The only few I could find this season were either way too expensive ($200+) or sold out! So, I decided to turn my search to etsy, hoping for a vintage option, or someone who could make it for me. I found this shirt:

Now, it doesn’t have sleeves, but I think that’s better. It’s hard for me to buy long sleeve tops online, because I have long arms, so I need to try to stuff on. That and my office building gets really warm, so it’ll be nice to have short sleeves- I can layer!

What fashion item have you been looking for, and finally found?

I’m wearing a lot of makeup, but I feel like it doesn’t -look- like I’m wearing a lot, so it’s okay? I don’t mind looking like I’m wearing a lot of makeup because sometimes I like it to be evident, but I also enjoy what I feel are slightly more subtle looks, like this one. I used the bare study as a base up to my eyebrows, then the iridescent purple eyeshadow on and a little bit above my eyelid, and then a thin line of pink instead of eyerliner on the top. The pretty dress is unique! Literally. It was hand-made in San Francisco by the people who produce Minnie Wilde. It’s also a really pretty color that changes a lot depending on the light. Inside, it looks like a light dusty grey purple, but outside it looks much more like a slightly purple silver. There are also colorful but sparse polka dots on it that might not be very evident in the pictures, but they’re there. I also really like the ruffled collar detail, it’s just really cute. I wish I had more opportunities to wear this dress that were actually appropriate, but I do no. Also these boots are just fantastic. They’re comfortable and sexy and go with just about everything. I hate feeling like I’ve given in to a trend [this one being the "over the knee/thigh high boot" trend], but. I really really really like these.
