This week in my maths set we have been focusing on percentages. We discussed where they might come across percentages in real-life contexts.

I decided to try some different ways to gather data and so created a simple PollDaddy survey with yes no answers so that we could then look at the results and calculate the percentages etc. This nearly didn’t work as 97 people took the survey. 3 more and the maths would have been a bit too simple. The children were amazed by the fact people from Israel, Malaysia, Spain and Poland took part in the survey.

At the beginning of the week we played Family Fortunes – points being rewarded on the basis of the percentage for each answer. We then thought about creating our own Family Fortunes game. Using Etherpad I created a couple of questions and opened it up to my PLN to contribute answers for use in a future lesson.

Today I had hoped to set up the school’s Wii and play the bowling game from Wii Sports where, on successive bowls, more pins are added. Unfortunately I teach my math set in the one classroom that does not have the correct leads. So instead I found a bowling game online – www.smiliegames.com/bowling

Five children came to the front and took turns bowling. We recorded how many pins they were aiming at and how many they succeded in knocking down. Children then calculated the percentage for their Strike Rate. Usually this was easy – 8 out of 10 for example. But when a child hit 4 pins on their first go it then became out of 6 and calculating the percentage became trickier. We then took the results for each child, totalled up how many pins they bowled at during their game, how many they actually knocked down and then calcualted their strike rate as a percentage.

I really like the way tools such as Etherpad, PollDaddy and Wallwisher allow me to gather data to use in the class. The children seem to respond well to the fact the information has been gathered specifically for them and it means I can tailor the data to suit the lesson.

So, I am using this post to share some of my favorite “get your act together” tools I use for “dealing” on a daily basis. Keep in mind, I am a busy, quasi-stressed out mom, entrepreneur, and colossal nerd.

THINGS I USE TO DEAL ON A DAILY BASIS

1. www.Mint.com – A free finance tool
2. www.Doodle.com – Easy group scheduling tool (see “cat herding” above)
3. www.GoogleDocs.com – I use an excel sheet in Google Docs to manage my team, some of whom are virtual. Love it.
4. www.PollDaddy.com – Polls are a great. I really like them. The fact that they are free makes them even better. You can use Google Forms as well.
5. www.EventBrite.com – This was introduced to me by the guys at iStrategyLabs. Use it for your real life events or virtual seminars. You will see why.
6. 1888PressRelease.com – Good stuff. I always like things that give you reach you don’t deserve because you have no money. But, we can’t let that stop us!
7. www.TwitterAnalyzer.com – Gives me good stats I can share with the guys in my department and let them know I’m not TOTALLY wasting time.
8. www.SlimTimer.com – It’s like you’re back in high school with your mom telling you to get your homework done. Love it.
9. Six O’Clock Scramble – Healthy meals in 30 minutes. I’m sure I would use this if I cooked. Okay, also, this is not business. But, you gotta cook, right? And if you spend 30 less minutes on cooking, then that’s 30 more minutes for your business.
10. www.FitDay.com – While we’re on the health topic, my favorite free health tool. Most entrepreneurs I know in EO (Entrepreneurs Oranization where you’re under 40 and have sales of $1 million or more) have some major hobby, including working out, etc.

What tools are you thankful for (more like the above, and less like – uh – a jack hammer). Or, as my aunt and dad and other erudite folks might correct me, “For what tools are you thankful?”

THINGS THAT ARE HIGHLY ANNOYING.

I have just read this blog, and am feeling quite snarky now. I am less thankful for the following:

• Trump Network on Twitter– How did Trump let this happen to his name?
• The “make cash at home” people
• The “make money on Google” people
• The “you can earn money on Twitter” people
• When I am looking for a document on my computer and click through like six windows, and then do that every time I need to find a document, several times a day, for years.

IF YOU DON’T LAUGH, YOU’LL CRY

During one of my presentations at a recent DAM conference, the audience made a request for a DAM internship or mentorship program. This poll is meant to find out how many people are interested in an internship program and/or mentorship program, specifically about Digital Asset Management. This program would be led by DAM professionals who use DAM and are willing to mentor. Here’s how it went down.  I was invited by my sister Paula to take photographs of her new church.  She is having her church website updated and wants it before Christmas.

After three years of seminary and commuting to work part-time at a church near Milwaukee for even longer, she’s recently gotten an appointment at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, in Monona, Wisconsin.  She has been there for about three months as head pastor.

I am very proud of her and excited to help out in any way I can.  I went over on Sunday to get some shots of the morning service and activities.

She’s talking to one of the people helping her prepare for the service, a man, who notices me taking pictures.   She says something to him and  he smiles and says something.  She has an indecipherable but polite look on her face, which I can’t hear because they are about ten feet away but they are clearly talking about me.

I approach questioningly?

As I walk up she tells me: “He said that you got the  good looks in the family.”

A shocky-kind-of-limbo comes over me, which is what always happens in these situations, while I try to decipher what’s going on.  He really just said that to his pastor?  Seriously?  Should she be insulted?  Should I?  Yes, my gut tells me.  And yes.

This is one of the most subtle types of sexism.  A comment masked as compliment but clearly designed (whether consciously or not) to make women uncomfortable.

I say, “You got the brains.” as I try to remember that  joke about “age before beauty.” No that doesn’t apply and why am I trying to be funny, except that I feel uncomfortable and I don’t know what to say.  Commenting on her smarts was all I could think of, in the spur of the moment.

She says, “We’re just smart about different things.  You’re definitely the better dresser.”

We both fall into a lame quiet, while neither of us knows what to say.   They begin to talk about microphones or something related to the service.  I finally mumble something about more photos and walk away, feeling sad and wishing my sister didn’t have to deal with stupid people constantly reminding her she’s a woman.

Was it sexist of him to talk about my looks? To refer to and rate his pastor’s looks by implication?  He was meeting his pastor’s sister for the first time who cares about our looks, I mean really?

When I got home, after a twenty-minute drive, I was still bothering over it and I asked Tom what he thought?

And now I’m asking you.  Was it sexist and what would you have said?

Of course I obviously do believe that this comment was sexist.  It’s a work situation and a man is commenting on his pastor’s looks.  However he does it , no matter his motives it is wrong.  Saying something in a moment like that is hard because I don’t want to make things harder for Paula or create a scene. But saying nothing is worse. Looking back, I know that both of our silence is interpreted as agreement, indifference, or fear.

And so I sit here simmering, thinking about what I should have said.

Who is doing your uploading and metatagging? Who trains all new DAM users as well as power users? Who helps establish and govern workflows and process with your DAM?
