Het overviel me vanmorgen o

Potverjanpielekes, ik schrok me rot.

Pfff. En dat allemaal op maandagochtend.

Center panel

Not much action here as far as the dress goes. Lots of stuff to do. Time sensitive. Responsibilities.

But I have made the center panel. It’s not crazy exciting, but there’s a reason for that. I think the polonaise is way exciting by its own. One could have gone all out with the center bodice panel, just for the sake of going all out, and to show off. But, no. That was not done here. Restraint was used.

Why did I decide to construct it with a center panel? Doesn’t it make it more complex? Yes, it does. But it also leaves some room for fudging in case I gain or loose weight. I often imagine I may need to wear the dresses I make more than once, though it rarely happens. Yet, I am hopeful.

The center panel is interlined in heavy canvas. There are two 4 inch bones crossing the waist vertically. I also sewed a piece of cotton tape horizontally across the waist to reinforce it. Most of the brute force of holding the bodice on the body should be taken by the waist plackard (see previous post), but structural integrity is important, and, well, why not?

The center panel buttons on the inside with metal snaps. Hook and eyes could not have worked, because they would show. The snaps make the join flat, without leaving the gap between the base of the hook and the eye.

The center panel is lined in lilac silk. I pleated two pieces of a plum sash into the top side of the panel and tied them into a bow. I’ll iron the bow to be more flat and such later.

It’s hard for me to make the dress look good on the dummy. First, though its close, it’s not exactly my measurements. Second, it can not stand up straight.

To the right is the lovely back, all plaid and poufy.

I have some antique lace I will sew into the neckline, and the plan is to make a scarf that ties around the waist for yet another exciting bow.

The back half of the underskirt needs its pleats. I’m waiting to see how much plum I have left before I make them. The plan is to make the sleeves plum with some plaid trim. Almost all of the fashion plates I have seen using plaid fabric have the sleeve fabric contract from the bodice: either the bodice is solid and the sleeves plaid or vise versa. Again, there is also so much going on with the polonaise. It’s good to give the eye a break.

The dress will be photographed at the Lilac Festival here in Rochester, so it will have to be done soon. I’ll be making a hat, too.

Since I don’t have much else to show, I am posting a picture of my garden gnome. He’s really cute. One could stare at him for hours…

Well well well” (vrij vertaald: put put put). Of bij Reynders, een dansje op “It’s all about the money” (Meja) of “Money money money” (Abba). Dank u!

I started cutting into the gown fabric today after making the pattern pieces and a mock up of muslin

I started cutting into the gown fabric today after making the pattern pieces and a mock up of muslin. I will document here how to construct a dress. I couldn’t work on it too intensely today, so everything is all basic.

Here is a shot of the front panel pinned to the dummy. Understand, this is the base skirt. It will be adnored with puffs, pleats, scallops, and an apron that is also adorned. I’ll get to the apron later.

Side Panels attached to the front panel

There will be an attached back train of modest size. It is made up of three panels of the silk, sewn together. I gathered the train into a piece of sturdy cotton tape. Right now, it’s just pinned to the tape. The train is not yet sewn to the front panels for reasons that will become clear later. Basically, it’s being held on the dummy by friction.

Keep in mind, that the three train panels are something like 7 feet across, all of which needed to be gathered into the 19″ piece of cotton tape. There is a lot of stuff going on there, and things are not as simple as they appear.

A rather wide apron will be attached going across the three front panels and sewn into the seams above the train. The cotton tape that holds the train will be held to the waistband with rigging, and two purple panels that cover the rigging.

The Brown dress in the middle is the inspiration for my Polonaise design. Coming soon.

To the right is the 1874 Godey fashion print that is the closest thing to what I have in mind for the back of the polonaise. Of course, it’s brown and not plaid.

The proposed underskirt will be much more elaborate than the one shown on the brown Polonaise in the 1874 print. Also, the front of the Polonaise will be shorter, which will allow for a lovely apron. But I really liked the long train effect on the brown polonaise.

I am already in love with my grape-popsicle colored silk. It’s so soft, so sturdy, an so easy to work with. It rustles and drapes like a dream, and the color is just so Victorian.

The Polonaise of Marie Anntoinette pulled up from the dirt

The Victorian world saw an explosion of advancement, growth, and manufacturing. Factories were raising from the gentile fields of Europe, and America was stalking and pouncing on the power of steam and mechanization with a covetous hunger. From all the clank and soot arose new millionaires, all eager to establish themselves in society and ensure themselves a place in social/congregational heaven. But how so? How can these nouveau riche of Western Society be squeezed into an inherited pattern whose foremost requirement is that entrants not be nouveau riche? How can society create order with such seeming economic chaos? Easy. Give those mass produced parlor sets crotch mahogany veneer. Make all the new stuff nobly pay tribute to the old.

Victorian Revival of the Polonaise with a Watteau back

My next project will be something of a revival of a revival - a purple plaid polonaise c. 1874-1876. The Victorian Polonaise was meant to be a revival of a Roccoco style ‘gown’ for the aristocracy that was intended to copy the dress of rustic Polish peasants. Of course the Rococo Polonaise and the Victorian Polonaise little resemble that which the 18th century Polish peasant actually wore and were made of much more expensive materials, but that’s beside the point.

The Victorian Polonaise is something of an evolution of an evolution. In the age of Marie Anntoinette, when dressing like a simple, silk-clad, puffed, and embroidered peasant girl was a la mode, fashions were adopted by designers that wished to give elegance to the ’simplicity’ of peasant life. In order for designers to credibly claim their designs were peasant-chic, they would slap names on their garments to evoke some foreign, and perceived simplistic culture.

La Polonaise was a safe bet for a name of such a garment, first because Poland was a long way away from France, and second, because the former queen, and grandmother of the current King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Leszczyńska, was Polish and reknowned for her piety, simplicity and charity. Unlike Marie-Anntoinette, she had a well-deserved reputation for charity, piety, thrift in a decadent court, and she was popular. Also, Poland was poorer than France, so there must be simple peasants there.

What was a Polonaise? Basically a bodice that is shorter in front and with a very long back. The original intention of the 1770s Polonaise was to bunch the back, so as to imitate peasants who pull their robes up out of the dirt. Aristocracy, you see, didn’t need to pull their robes up from the dirt because they had peasants to walk on when the ground was muddy. [It's a joke]

A Sporty Polonaise from 1883. The styling here was the most common.

The Polonaise came into style just about the same time as the bustle. As the Victorian era grew older, it became sportier and sportier, loosing the old pick-up-from-the-dirt idea and turning instead into to simply a long-backed bodice. Some of them were made with faked shorter bodices, with long attached ‘tail’ or skirts. Eventually, they just became something of a jacket, but retained the name.

The Polonaise has likely existed in some form or another for quite some time. I remember seeing images of Tudor women, working class women from the 17th century, and 17th century courtiers wearing gowns of a similar concept. An Elizabethan gown ‘In the Polish style’ meant simply that it was high-necked, without a train, front closing, and decorated with horizontal braid across the front opening. That which would be most similar to the Polonaise was called an “open gown” or “loose gown,” which isn’t nearly as catchy, chic, and French as Polonaise. So when the term was coined, it stuck for a little over a century.

The polonaise I intend to make will resemble it’s Rococo ancestors only minimally.

Well, the white ball gown that we held so gently for weeks, lays crumpled on the floor. The tiara dangles from my daughters mirror. In my daughters eyes (and mine) the ball was a huge success and now will be a wonderful memory to cherish. Our reasons for its success are very different and for me a bit surprising on my daughters part.

The young men and women looked wonderful. All the debutantes in white and the squires in tux with tails. Everyone with white gloves. The formal presentation was long and tedious because the sponsors insisted the long list of interest and accomplishments be read. I joked with some of my daughters female friends who were there to listen and decide which ones of the squires they wanted to go after… I mean this is what this was originally meant for. But what was stunning — I mean absolutely breathtaking was the grand Polonaise and the grand Waltz. Most of these young people have been dancing with a Polish ethnic dance group and with one another since small children. Now as young men and women they carried themselves with such poise and dignity it was hard not to get carried away with the moment. Women in ball gowns. Men in tails. It was like a moment out of history. I actually started to cry so proud of them and so swept into the moment.

After the waltz dinner was served and the conversation nice. After dinner it was time for everyone to dance. One thing that I have always appreciated about such moments with this community of people is that everyone dances, young and old alike. There was a couple out on the floor for almost every dance who were in their 80’s. Most of the music, although loud, carried such a beat that the kids could just do their own thing while the adults two-step-ed, waltzed, polka-ed…

My daughter saw this evening as a success not only because it was a wonderful evening but because her friends, not apart of the community but as invited guests, had a great time. Yes, they were a bit bored by the presentation and such but when they could all relax and just have fun they did. The young people of the Polish community had no problem inviting these strangers into their midst and including them in on whatever the group did. But mostly she saw this as a grand success because her boyfriend, whom she has struggled with in the past to get him to want to be interested in her life, joined right in to everything. He was there with his parents and really did my daughter proud. I found out later (as my daughter and I drove the hour trip home) that he told her how impressed he was with the Polonaise and the grand Waltz and with the whole evening. She bragged on how much of an effort he made to include himself with her dancing buddies; and she was able to compare his attitude with some of her girl friends whose boyfriends were so clingy they wouldn’t let anybody have any fun; or non-existent. She has been worried about his willingness to accept and support her interests, likes and world and, in her words, “He passed – 110%.”

For me the evening, although difficult, was a huge success as well. I decided to make the first move and approached Peter’s (my ex) mother and friends. 99% greeted me in a positive and loving manner. There was only one lady who treated me like a leper. In truth those who we have been friends with through this dance group found that place where they could be friends with both of us. And funny thing was, without thinking, when Peter and I were introduced (a part of the process) I took his arm as we walked out onto the staging area. Someone commented to me later about it. And it was so wonderful to have some of my friends there. One friend in particular, divorced herself, took the initiative to understand what I might be going through in certain moments and put herself in a place to take care of me. (Such as when the event was just getting started, guests arriving and I saw my ex’s family come in the door. Debbie just took me by the hand and headed in the opposite direction — to the bar! Or later seeing me standing alone as we parents waited, knowing that they were all talking to each other in Polish, came and waited with me…) Some day I want to come back to this moment and blog about friendship. I re-affirmed a lesson in my life that friends don’t have to be perfect, just having the desire to care about you that they are willing to keep working through differences.

What made this evening the grandest in successes, for me anyway, was watching my daughter be the caring young woman that she is. I watched all the young people and its not just in this moment but similar moments in life, weddings, birthdays, graduation parties… the person of honor shows a good bit of their true nature, in my opinion. I watched and there were true “princesses” that night. The evening was all about them… their fun, their whines, their happiness and family and friends were simply present to make their lives “be perfect” if only for the night. And there were generous, caring young men and women. They seem to function on the idea that, yes, this evening was about them, but they focused not on themselves but the comfort and enjoyment of their guests. My daughter was the second. There were 11 guests on my side and 10 on my ex-husbands side that were there simply because my daughter was being presented. Four of the 21 were teens. My daughter spend much of the evening (once they were freed from their formal obligations) catering to the comfort and enjoyment of her guests. Yes, she sat around and talked with “old people.” She told me later on the drive home that she felt like a bride at her wedding. Not only being in a white dress but her enjoyment was from seeing her guests enjoy themselves. My baby is all grown up! So, we can but this moment to rest as a wonderfully positive memory in a very difficult year.

Well, if all goes as plan I am leaving tomorrow to spend Thanksgiving with my brother and his wife so I will be away from my computer for a while. Please let me take this opportunity to wish you all an attitude of gratitude as we embrace this weekend of family and food. I would hope that all will remember that faith was meant to be a big part of Thanksgiving. Giving Thanks to God for all the bounty of our year. I for one have a great deal to give thanks for. I remain, your servant in Christ

Ever since my mother died almost 15 years ago (has it really been that long?), and my dad immediately after, and all the family I’ve ever had has either grown up and moved away or flown off into the great beyond, I’ve been trying to figure out what to do at Christmas. It’s a little bit hard to have a huge family Christmas when “huge” and “mother” have been taken out of the equation.

Christmas Rituals

And even though I was the one child out of four who just had to have the precious Polonaise glass Santa ornament (that one of us had chipped, leaving Mom with a broken heart), and the hand-blown teardrop ornaments and glass Christmas trees with the frosted boughs, and the plastic, three-dimensional Sputnik stars, I find that I have no clue what to do with them now that they are mine and mine alone. I have boxes of miscellaneous holiday memorabilia, like the Nativity scene that is missing baby Jesus and two of the wise men, the tall frosted glass candle with the illustration of Mother Mary that we were never allowed to burn because it was so beautiful, the oddball ornaments my mother’s art students made for her and my sister’s strange friends gave to her, but somehow it doesn’t feel right to pull them out each Christmas.

I’ve been looking at my cousins whose parents are still alive— watching them show up for their family rituals, feeling so darn lonely for mine. And even though my aunts have generously tried to fit me in, I’ve been left feeling like more of an outsider than ever.

Their rituals underscore that mine are no longer alive. Having Christmas morning around a tree with chic, twinkling white lights, instead of bold, colorful globe lights, just doesn’t feel the same. The orderly opening of a few choice presents that were carefully selected by one member of the family for another member can never replace the glorious shower of flying wrapping paper that secretly hid the identity of oh-so-many presents. And how can an organized Christmas dinner, where one daughter cooks the casseroles, one the pies, while the mother bakes and bastes the turkey, ever replace those 5 a.m. disputes where my unmarried aunt, holding something wrapped in what looked like a baby blanket, would wake up my mother to ask her how long it— the roast— should be cooked, even though she would always overcook it no matter what my mother said? All the people who sat at our table would sit elbow to elbow and tell stories and not really care that the roast was burned, because the rest of the food was good and mothers didn’t die yet and all was right with the world.

And, OK, maybe I never really liked going to midnight service at the Episcopal church, wearing dresses that crinkled like wrapping paper every time I stood up, then knelt (which you do a lot in an Episcopal church), singing impenetrably tuneless hymns. But still. To have those Christmas Eves back would be wonderful. How fun it would be to wake up to all those glorious presents— ripping them open in a blizzard of ribbons and paper— and then knocking off that entire box of chocolate-covered cherries for breakfast, followed by the nuts and the hard ribbon candy Santa left.

And sure, getting that big Christmas morning present from Mom will continue to be a wish I’ll never stop having. The bicycle. The ping-pong table. One year, my brothers got clarinets, my sister got a guitar and I got a ukulele. They all became musicians and I became the writer who wrote funny things, like about getting that ukulele for Christmas. To have that ukulele back now would mean everything to me.

And, oh all right, even though I rolled my eyes when Mom crammed my brothers and sister into the car to go visit those frail little aunts on Christmas afternoon— the ones who never had presents for us, but had a busload of Pecan Sandies, year-old marshmallow Santas and enough jelly beans to last a month— I’d give my eyeteeth to be able to get in the car with my mother so we could go visit them today.

And, oh, for the day after Christmas when our extended family would…

Look at this delicious bit of fittedness:

I’m really, really proud of myself.

I’ve gotten tons more done since last I blogged. Finished flatlining…

…and moved on to assembling the back piece. Lots of hand-basting, which I actually really enjoy. Especially since I got some new basting needles which are long and sharp.

Once the side pleats are basted, the top gets pleated onto a piece of twill tape.

Then you sew it to the back pieces. The above picture is actually just the pleating, not the attaching, and it’s kind of a mess now with all the stitching, but it’ll be pretty strong. The trick is to attach it only to the interlining, not the outer fashion fabric. Tricky indeed.

Here’s how it looks after I sewed the back pieces together:

Makes a lovely chair cover!
