another cover story assignment for Forbes in Touch Here’s another article I wrote about Floren

another cover story assignment for Forbes in Touch

Here’s another article I wrote about Florence Kho, owner of FurnItalia store, for the January 2008 issue of Forbes in Touch.

Home is where one starts from. – T.S. Elliot

Most people say that finding one’s character can start by simply observing one’s possessions, like asking someone, “What is it in your bag?” From there we’ll get interesting finds that may somewhat describe the person. I also recall this web site I learned from a colleague at which it encourages visitors to show all the things that are living in the pockets of their bag, scan them with their faces on, and send a copy for their project. A way of artistic expression so to speak, it is also fascinating to see and interpret the lifestyle and the personality of each individual with her personal things.

What more when we visit their most important possessions of all—their homes. A bubbly and sophisticated woman named Florence Ko just let us in.

Florence who also houses the rare, uniquely classic and high-end Italian masterpieces in the metro today, opens her doors to give us a glimpse of what is truly inside her home. It is a hard fact that her upscale store, FurnItalia is popular for home designers and urbanites that are in dire search for creations of the hottest names in Italian furniture designs like Carlo Colombo, Jean-Marie Massaud, Ferruccio Laviani and Antonella Mosca; and for the timeless classics of Poltrona Frau and of Fontana Arte.

Yet there is more to Florence’s über chic Italian furniture store or to her cozy modern home in northern Forbes than meet the eye.

At Home with Florence
Florence lives a quiet, comfortable life with her husband and her kids in their Forbes home for more than six years now. The house has significant touches of both the timeless and the modern, and a balance of simplicity and of edginess. Particularly, her living room is a spectacular sight. The room predictably stays with the basic colors of black and white—from the couches to the glasses and vases. But it suddenly creates its own quirks when a red mini sofa chair décor sits atop of the center table with a dozen of light green apples at the side. On top of that, a view of lush greens and a sound of gushing water from the pond are definitely breathtaking to make one stay home.

She dubs her personal home designing, a modern classic. “I aspire of having a modern style home, but not too much edge,” as she explains. She describes herself as an easygoing and gregarious woman who is also not afraid of trying something new and even perhaps, talking to strangers! I remember as she tells us a few of her life’s time-tested adages. “Don’t be afraid to ask. When you don’t know anything, seek help. Ask and speak your mind,” as she puts it. Personally, it could be interpreted that her bravado and zest of life contribute to the modernity of their niche. “As a wife, I bring joy to my husband. He’s a quiet person and I always make him laugh.” She says. A yin-yang pair as I may describe it, this explains why such a balance exists in their home.

Of all the spaces at her home, she and her family love their kitchen the most. “It’s pretty obvious naman!” she nonchalantly jokes around and points at her figure. The family loves preparing and eating Chinese and Italian foods. “Whenever we have Italian visitors (our clients) around, we get thrilled with their presence because we will be preparing something Italian!”

Apart from having the love for food, Florence shares us how significant the kitchen is in their family, “I am unaware how this came about, but whenever there is someone in the family who celebrates his or her birthday, we often gather together and we let the celebrant blow his or her birthday candles in the kitchen. Even our yayas and our drivers do!” It is pretty amusing how this cooking space can magically get Florence’s loved ones happily together.

Florence in FurnItalia etc.
During those times when their house in Forbes was still being built then, Florence and her husband could not seem to find the furniture and home décor they much wanted. Because of that, they both decided to put up their own furniture store.

FurnItalia was first established around 2001 in Greenhills, San Juan. In 2006, FurnItalia opens itself another in The Fort. The store got its name at the spur of the moment when the construction team once asked the couple the name they’d want to put on the project. Florence flippantly played with words as she answered the engineer’s million-dollar question: what will the store sell? “We will sell furniture from Italy. Furn. Italia!” Florence recollects.

FurnItalia prides itself for being a distributor of first-class Italian and European furniture brands in the country today. One of which is Poltruna Frau, an Italian brand in furniture making since 1912 that is also widely known for providing outstanding furniture and home décors to state-of-the-art facilities all over the world. Definitely, this brand as such is popular for its very classy designs that home designers and enthusiasts feast on.

As an owner of this modish store, Florence advises her clients to prioritize comfort and practicality in choosing furniture and home decors. “In furniture, stick to basic, neutral colors—brown, black or white; they won’t go out of style too easily. If they want to vary the look of their room, dash it with a bright-colored décor. In that case, it is easier to take it out once you want to go for a new one,” she explains.

As a businesswoman, she is focused to her clients. As a boss, she is straightforward. “I always want to know what my customer wants. They’re my priority in business. With the people I work with, I am honest. I work with integrity. It is better that way than to make lies. And for me, play is play. Work is work,” she describes.

Besides FurnItalia, Florence and her husband have already ventured to another business niches. They set up another store at the location where FurnItalia first started. This time, the store caters to newly-wed couples and condominium owners. Another one has ideally reflected their passion to cooking and dining. Florence glows as she explains their newfound kitchen design business, “Every client has its own particular needs to their kitchen, which are very technical in nature. We have to delve both to the personality of the client and the functionality of his or her kitchen.”

On her spare time, she loves relaxing at the spa and reading lifestyle and showbiz magazines. She also loves traveling especially with her family. She doesn’t do much planning, but she wishes good health for her and for her loved ones.

With her zest for life and upbeat personality and the love of her family at the side, Florence has definitely defined the home she truly owns and cherishes.

Tonight I had the chance to listen to Piero Lissoni speak as part of the month-long Architecture and

Tonight I had the chance to listen to Piero Lissoni speak as part of the month-long Architecture and the City Festival put on by the San Francisco chapter of the AIA. Speaking at the gorgeous CCA campus, Lissoni proved to be as charismatic, affable, honest and genuine as he is talented. While I knew him well for his work with Italian furniture lines Boffi, Living Divani, Porro, and Cassina, only until he casually mentioned his other clients did I realize the true reach of his work, which includes projects for just about every blue-chip Italian furniture company like Kartell, Alessi, Flos, Cappellini, Poltrona Frau, Glas Italia, Fritz Hansen, Knoll, and Swarowski. OMG. In my mind he was already a legend based on the body of work that I knew about, but when I learned about everything else that he did, I was truly blown away. In sports speak, he’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer on par with a Starck or Newson, if not above.

As Lissoni’s lecture began, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Outwardly, he looked the part of designer: navy sportcoat with elbow patches, slim taupe jeans, brown driving mocs, and cream scarf. On the stage, he had a continuous, looping portfolio of his work on the big projection screen while he was seated and speaking at a folding 6 foot table filled with various objects including an analog clock radio, Mac Powerbook, printed books, Japanese rice bowl, wind-up robot, Alessi coffee press, foam model of a recent building he designed in Istambul, and even a red foam clown’s nose (more on that later). These would be the props that he used throughout his lecture, which was going to be about his “humanistic” approach to designing, apparently a last minute departure from his pre-planned retrospective of his work (which probably would not nearly have been as enlightening as his new topic, to our luck).

I have to admit that it took more than a few minutes before I could make enough sense of his Italian accent, broken English, and sense humor to concentrate on the content and intent of his speech. As his lecture wore on (for more than 2.5 hours) and his anecdotes and examples began to amass, his genius began to come through in spades. What was muddy for me about his humanistic approach became crystal clear – and then enlightening. While it would be hard to replicate Lissoni’s career path and success, there are plenty of nuggets to take away from his lecture that you or I can learn from.

Unfortunately, the lecture was not recorded nor could I record it or take notes real-time. So the following quotes, excerpts, points, and facts are purely based on my recollection (and my mad dash to takes notes right his lecture). If anyone in attendance tonight has anything to add or clarify, please join in on the conversation! In no particular order, here were the highlights:

His working relationship with Alessi began with an hours-long conversation with Alberto Alessi about wine before Alberto finally brought up the idea of designing a watch, which Lissoni agreed to on the spot and without additional conversation. He called his wine conversation his design “brief.”

His Alessi coffee press project was aimed to take on Bialetti’s venerable, classic coffee press, which he said was like challenging Pele to a soccer match – “It was a good game.”

On the ergonomics of his furniture: “Of course it’s uncomfortable, I’m Italian!”

On his favorite materials to use: he has none and all are specific to each project. He said “Materials are the language of every project” and that he never chooses to use a material just to use it.

He is currently designing a bridge using carbon fiber

He once worked with Kartell for more than two years to develop a new manufacturing technology for a chair, which ended up saving more than a kilogram of raw materials per chair.

His desk at his office is a 3 meters by 3 meters and covered with books and objects. He only works on a small 2 foot by 2 foot area on his desk, and only cleans his desk when the other things on his desk begin to intrude on this space (about every 2 months).

He cannot work unless he has espresso, bottled water and fresh flowers everyday.

He disallows computers in his meetings.

His office has 3 libraries, one each for design, architecture/furniture and classics (poetry, novels, etc.). He said if his employees are not using all three then they are not right for his firm.

His puts on a red foam clown nose when he feels his meetings are getting too serious.

He says we are all “prostitutes” – “People pay and we do.”

He calls his clients his “victims.”

On what makes Italian designers the best in the world: their great clients. He said he is always late to meetings, often shows up empty-handed, often is late with deliverables, and that clients either love him or hate him. His Italian clients clearly love him – and he quips “Could you imagine if I worked with Japanese or German clients?”

He says working with engineers is his biggest nightmare.

He thinks “It is impossible to live without technology” but that technology should only be used as a “tool.” If it’s is used as the sole way to design, then it is wrong and “dangerous.” He believes that working with your hands is still an essential part of the design process. He says people often show him beautiful images on a screen but they often have no life.

He started designing as a child, first using Legos. He still thinks like a child but “only on a different scale.”

He called his design school “hell” compared to the ones today (like CCA). He said they had limited tools but were challenged to stay “curious” – his advice to design students today.

His approach to designing architecture is different from his approach with products – “There is so much noise out there, I design my buildings to be quiet.” He also uses a “European approach” to architecture projects where he designs the exterior plus everything in the interior down to the cabinet pulls.

Asked if he’s designed a perfect thing: no, and he doesn’t strive for perfection because it’s “boring.” But he does strive for greater precision in design and greater control over the process. His example for the need for greater precision – a private home renovation where his budget of 1 became a 10 in reality.

His examples of perfection: the work on Antonio Citterio, the work of Carlo Scarpa, a dinner by Alain Ducasse, Church of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice by architect Andrea Palladio, the Barcelona Pavilion by architect Mies van der Rohe.

The one thing he has not designed that he dreams about: a daughter. He said with designing materials things “anything is possible” but it is things like life, a family, a daughter that are a real challenge to design.

On what makes him happy: “Of course, I like the girls.”

There not much more to say or translate as I think his humanistic approach is pretty clear, at least to me. While we can’t all be Lissoni or work the same way that he does (wouldn’t it be nice to go over budget 10 times and still have a job or demand fresh flowers at your desk everyday), I know that there are things I am taking away from his lecture that will make me a better designer.

As much as I love interior design, I’ve always had an almost equal love affair with cars, especially fast cars, Italian cars. Born from reading my dad’s Road & Track magazines, I grew up following automakers and remembering horsepower and 0-60 times like how other kids followed athletes. My fondness for Italian cars stemmed from their superior aesthetic design and performance, especially when compared to their German or American counterparts (of course, there are exceptions). Cars like Lamorghini ’s Miura, Countach, and LM002, and Ferrari’s Daytona, Testarossa, and F40 were game-changers; their designs looked generations ahead of other manufacturers during those periods of time. Who doesn’t remember the awe of seeing their first Countach or Testarossa? These cars had so much panache and appeal that shows like Magnum P.I. and Miami Vice were thinly veiled dramas that centered mostly around the cars that the stars drove. Even today, 30 years later, all these cars look as audacious as they did when they first came out. Unsuprisingly, my primary interest in cars was for their design aesthetic or architecture, like how the headlights formed the face of the car, how the various body panels aligned and met up, how the vents and ducts were shaped and placed, how crease and character lines on the hood and body panels affected the car’s impact, etc. To me it was the details that counted. I call this the CARchitecture.

With that as the backdrop, guess how excited I was when I was invited to “test drive” the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano at San Francisco Ferrari on Tuesday? VERY. Honestly, I am not sure how I got on this marketing list, but over the years I’ve been invited to a few events from them including test driving the Maserati (their sister brand than Ferrari controls) Quattroporte and Granturismo at Calistoga Ranch and attending the American launch of the upcoming Ferrari California at the Monterey Concours. But of all the events I’ve attended, I’ve never been given the chance to drive a Ferrari, let alone their flagship model that lists for $302K (base) and packs 620 horsepower. While I could spend this whole entry talking about the driving experience, which was AMAZING by the way, I’ll stick to talking about the CARchitecture.

Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano

Walking up to the Ferrari, the trademark red hue was arresting even on this cloudy day. As I walked around the car and studied the Pininfarina penned bodywork, I was struck by the proportions of the car, which has its engine in the front unlike most Ferraris. I didn’t realize how long the hood was, obviously a necessity to house the big V-12 underneath. Conversely, the rear deck was rather short and quite high. Taken as a whole, the 599 looked nice, if not a bit back heavy like a Mercedes SLR McLaren. This car is definitely a Ferrari but I don’t think it will go down as a classic, all-time Ferrari. My rationale for this slightly blander Ferrari is the company’s extreme focus on and influence by aerodynamics. In it’s quest for extreme speed (this Ferrari tops out at 205 mph), Ferrari has to design cars with finely-tuned aerodynamics to reach such speeds.

When studying the rear, I thought the designers did a wonderful job of masking the thickish rear end by lowering the license plate aperature while raising the sweep of the diffuser, one of the many aerodynamic tricks that can be seen all over the car. In the first picture above, the gray “tray” or diffuser along the bottom channels the air cleanly from beneath the car out the back to minimize turbulence and assist aerodynamics. From a design perspetive, making the diffuser gray is a visual trick to reduce the amount of aluminum body that we see, making the car look like it has less junk in the trunk, literally! Suprisingly, the tray was made of fiberglass and not carbon fiber as I expected for a car costing this much. The jewels of the rear end are the beautiful LED rear lamps, which sport LEDs for both the red ring of braking lights and the orange ring of signal lights. As a designer, you have to love the beautiful crystalline effect that the LEDs have; from an engineering persective, they use less electricity while providing a safer driving experience because they light up much quicker than standard incandescent bulbs. The way the rear fenders “wrap around” those lights produces a powerful, muscular rear stance for the car, a not so subtle remidner of the power on tap beneath the hood.

If you study the top of the car in the second picture above, you’ll note how the “C” pillar actually does not touch the rear glass; there is actually a space between the windows and this structual beam, which is called a “flying buttress”. The roof of the car is essentially a glass canopy like a fighter jet. The flying buttress was added for added structural integrity and to give the 599 a classic Ferrari boxer shape like an old 512BB Boxer or a 288 GTO. From most angles, this flying buttress detail cannot be seen as it is well disguised and blends into the body work. But upon closer inspection, I think this detail is really innovative and highly architectural, like the curve from a Santiago Calatrava bridge, like this one we saw in Venice over the Grand Canal:

The front of the car is its most unremarkable angle in my opinion. While the lines are perfectly clean and aligned, the front is not particularly distinctive. The headlamps look like a nicer version of those found on the previous generation Infinity G30 coupe. Nevertheless it is a nicer version – as the front fender crease continues through the headlamp covers. The primary intake is classic Ferrari with its large eggcrate grill, though having a separate lower grill along the bottom is very similar to current Audi’s. A distinctive touch is the two vents in the hood, which is barely perceptible in the picture above. I think that this not adds some masculinity to the design but also helps the hot V-12 engine breathe.

Having driven the 599, I can the interior is a nice mix of luxury and straight-forwardedness. For example, most of the surfaces are covered in fine leather from Poltrona Frau, the same Frau as the fine furniture manufactuer, yet most of the remaning surfaces are carbon fiber (seat back, door panel, etc.) which says to me “we should be saving weight but for $300K we’ll show you some skin.”

The most striking design element of the interior are the four large vents protruding off the dashboard. These vents perfectly embody Italian design: they need to be efficient and simple, but be gorgeous all at once. A Japanese or German car would have made the vents blend into the rest of the dashboard landscape, performing a functional but unassuming role. The Italians say “let’s make this functional art by making the vents huge and from carbon fiber.” I particularly like the photo above and how the lights from the Waldo Tunnel on the 101 reflect off the polished surface.

The instrument binacle on the 599 was an interesting mix of new and old. Straight-ahead was the over-sized tachonmeter with a red background, clear markings for the 8,400 redline, and digital display indicating what gear you’re in. Now that 90% of all Ferrari’s are shipped as “auto-clutch manuals” (for a layman, essentially an “automatic”), a display is needed to tell the driver knows what gear they’re in. And given how easy and fun it is to shift, largely because of the intoxicating sounds of the engine, and how tractable the engine is, it is very easy to get lost in the gears. Its sixth gear pulls stronger than a regular car’s first gear. Within the binnacle, the other interesting element is the large LCD screen to the left, a homage to modern times. This screen functions as the communications center for the car, but in a nod to traditionalists some of the information is presented in digital “gauges”, a la the new Nission GTR, though Ferrari did not hire the GranTurismo game designers to make the graphics like Nissan did. Nevertheless, I had to take a picture of the instrument cluster for posterity – though I should have probably not done so while driving… the Ferrari consigliere who accompanied me was not happy about that at all and snatched my iPhone…

The coolest part of the interior though was probably the steering wheel. Half carbon fiber and half leather, this wheel is at once all business but again gorgeous. Along the top of the wheel are LEDs inbedded into the carbon fiber (see my first interior picture). As you pass 6,000 RPMs, the LEDs light up from left to right in an increasingly alarming array of colors – they are warning lights telling you about the need to upshift. This technology is directly taken from F1 racing – how cool is that! The funny thing is that in my very brief drive, I didn’t even notice the lights as I was concentrating so hard on 1) not crashing a $300K car while it was accelerating past 6,000 RPMs and 2) not getting a ticket from the CHP canvassing that stretch of 101 as I approached triple digits briefly. The other cool feature about the steering wheel are two buttons along the bottom, inner carbon fiber ring. Of course the 599 has the now de rigeur start button (I think Ferrari was the originator? Regardless, they have to be the best sounding cars upon depressing this button), and the manettino button, which controls the drive settings on the car depending on the external conditions: ice, low grip, sport, race or no CST. Each setting changes the program in the car’s computer which controls the suspension, traction control, electronic differential and change speed of electronic gearbox. I had a chance to try sport and race though race is supposed to be track only (no CST means all electronic driving aids are turned off – the suicide setting). Design wise, it just seems so Italian to put this key instrument on carbon fiber flange on the steering wheel operated by a little aluminum lever that points to some icons and some words. It’s kind of stubby, awkward and efficient all at the same time.

All in all, what’s there to not love about this car? I had a blast driving it and won’t forget it anytime soon, if ever… but then why did I leave my heart with another car that day, especially another car that was not a Ferrari? Stay tuned….

NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday approved 29 foreign direct investment (FDI) proposals worth Rs 616 crore including AAPC Singapore’s Rs 365 crore hotel project.

AAPC plans to set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in India for its hospital-ity venture, a finance ministry statement said.

The government has also allowed ABG Bulk Handling’s plan to convert its operating company into an operating- cum-holding company. It pro-poses to make downstream investments of Rs 90 crore.

Other proposals cleared by the government include Rs 50 crore invest-ment proposal of Cinema Capital Ventures Fund, US-based Telcordia Technologies’ plan to induct foreign equity up to 74% in the mobile number portability solutions business and Telcordia plan to invest Rs 45 crore in its Indian operation.

Poltrona Frau’s proposal to set up a single brand retail joint venture (JV) with Tata group company Eward also got the government’s nod, the statement said. The foreign company would invest Rs 21 crore in the proposed JV.

FDI proposals are cleared by the government on the basis of Foreign In-vestment Promotion Board’s (FIPB) suggestions. The board, constituted by the top officials of economic ministries, screens such FDI proposals where prior government approval is required.

The FIPB, however, deferred Gurgaon-based real estate company Unitech’s proposal to make downstream investments in real estate sec-tor.

It also deferred 18 other applications including FDI proposals of John Deere Construction, BNP Paribas Securities Services, Yamaha Motor In-dia, Quippo Telecom Infrastructure and Hiranandani Realtors.

This is my family’s showroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma, SR Hughes . . . it is so lovely. We are working on updating their website, srhughes.com, currently . . . just another little thing we do, shhcreative.com, besides the daisy princess paperie (look! something shiny!) . . . can’t wait to get it finished for them, it is going to be so GORGEOUS with all of these new photos, by Walt Beazley.
