I love everything girlie. I love floral prints. I love ruffles. Silk and chiffon. Skirts and poofy hairstyles. Polka dots, circle skirts, peep-toe shoes and mary janes. Everything late ’50s, and early ’60s is a dream to me.

I love menswear and military. Pencil skirts and pinstripes. Suspenders and fedoras. Anything with that old school gangster vibe. Polished brass buttons and high collars.

I love pirate. Anything striped. Red, blue, white. Very apple-pie all American. If it looks like it came off a pirate, I love it.

I love details, basically. For me, it’s not about the color as much as it is the details. I love little details that make a less expensive piece of clothing look like it cost more money.

Earlier tonight, I devoted some time to figuring out this Polyvore shenanigans which my online shopping and fashion design-freak friends have been linking me to lately. Turns out, you use images and articles online to assemble collections and sets of items that you feel have a common theme or unified look. Like an artistic, interactive shopping or wish list. Right off the bat, I set out with a mission:

I asked myself, “How can I look as much like Princess Leia in The Empire Strikes Back (specifically in the scenes on Hoth when she rocks the sick dutch braids and white sporty jumpsuit with the ivory vest) as possible without being one of those really strict cosplay assholes?”

The very first thing I decided to do was put together a collage of things you could buy that would make you look like Leia on Hoth, but not zealously or religiously so. If you click the image above, it will take you to a larger version, with notes and links to places you can get that stuff. I went whole hog. Purses, bitchin’ gloves, chokers, and lingerie (naturally) even.

I never, ever, even once claimed to be cool. I hope you are not let down by me!

So like most people I love all types of music. I pretty much have my iPod or iTunes going all day. In the morning getting ready for work, on the way to work, at work (got to love iTunes at work), going home from work, working out, and sometimes at night when I just want to relax.

I appreciate good music, and I tend to like a lot of genre’s . One thing that really “grinds my gears” though, are music snobs. I admit there is some pretty awful music out there *cough* Miley Cyrus *cough* but people like what they like. Just because you like emo and someone else loves pop doesn’t make you better than them. Just sayin’. Music can be appreciated by all types of people, and all types of people can appreciate a lot of different music.

They (although I don’t know who the “they” is) often say music defines your style. To an extent that is true. Right now I am loving Muse, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, Adele, the Noisettes, KOL, so my style is a little feminine (floral, flowing, and lace) mixed with a rock edge (boots, torn jeans, dark nail polish). With that in mind check out Polyvore.com. Here is an example of my styling choices for New Years.

Music is just so defining.  I can relate certain songs with certain points in my life, and when I hear the music it takes me back to those times. For example, on of my favorite songs when I was younger were “Gloria” by Laura Branigan & “Horse with No Name” by America. On the other side I have this cute little video of my dad singing “Walk Like an Egyptian” by the bangles, and I am just flailing my arms around in excitement.

One of the best Christmas memories I have was when I was about 5 or 6. My much older sibs were holding me up and would sing “Help,” then they would point to me and I would continue “I need some body . . .”

Elementary school was defined by the ever popular Spice Girls, Nsync, and Hanson.

High School went from B. Spears to 311, OAR and Sublime.

College was when I really expanded my listening pleasures. I have always loved blues but have become a bigger fan of it. As a kid I always loved “At Last” by Etta James (now made famous by the Obama’s), Billie Holiday, and BB King. I recently started to get back into it. I also enjoy musical show tunes. I used to love the songs from older movies such as South Pacific, the King and I, Oklahoma, Gypsy, Cry Baby. I also love Rent, We Will Rock You, Wicked, Grease, etc.

Anyway, I could go on forever. I will always be grateful for good music, old & new. It is what gets me through life.

Watching movies just makes me want to dress up! So I threw together a few coordinates with that in mind and I thought I’d share.

A Little Princess was one of my favorite movies as a child, and I really loved their drop-waisted dresses and giant giant hair bows, so I thought I’d use that as inspiration for this set. I tried to add a little bit of India with the jewelry as well, aren’t those earrings just lovely?

Marie Antoinette is a bit of a generic choice, and to be honest I thought the plot was pretty lacking, but what lolita can resist a movie that’s 80% pretty clothes and cake? I sure can’t. I also couldn’t resist including the cell phone, just too cute!

Sleepy Hollow was a good choice for something a little goth I think. The black and white striped dress from this film is what stands out most to me, so I thought I’d go with that. As a side note, it was terribly terribly hard to find a stock photo of this dress because I had no idea what the name of it was, does anyone know?

I’ve been inspired by a few different things lately…  among them, Karen O (as always), a little dip back into Cabaret, skeletons, deer, sequins, studs, faux fur, and Bauhaus.

As the nights get colder and the days begin to gray, I find myself aesthetically drawn to dark themes, motifs from nature and how wolves can be juxtaposed with deer…  stylistically and metaphorically.

I really like the mulberry color of this OP, it’s an older dress from Angelic Pretty. I’m also just a bit excited for winter! So. I have this boss. She is from Kentucky, which is {apparently} the reason she was brainwashed to follow outdated fashion rules as if THEY WERE WRITTEN BY GOD. Full makeup is not optional. Always wear a slip even if your skirt isn’t see-through. No white after Labor Day. So, she frequently looks at me in horror when I wear gray with brown. Or my shoes don’t match my purse. I am, to her, a fashion disaster.

“You can’t wear blue and black together.”

“Yep, you can. That rule was revoked.”

“By who?”

“Kenny Wayne Shepherd band.”

Then today, I boldly informed her that black and brown are totally awesome together, and she was horrified. {I should mention, I LIKE to freak her out. It’s one of my favorite hobbies. Thank you for funding it with your tax dollars.}

So, determined to prove her wrong I told her I’m going to rock her WORLD tomorrow with a freakin AWESOME black and brown ensemble. Stephanie’s joining in for the great Black and Brown Challenge of 2009. It will be epic. And here is {roughly} what I’m planning:

Not too crazy, right? – don’t you think black and brown can look great together? I think it’s because it’s simple but still unexpected. It looks like planned rule-breaking. It has to look intentional and put-together to work, maybe, but it’s certainly not boring.

Doe Deere has a polyvore.com contest once a month and I thought it would be cool to enter two. Neither got even an honorable mention! Oh sad sad days!!!!

Nu för tiden hänger jag ohälsosamt mycket på weheartit. Inte så konstigt, med tanke på att där finns så mycket fina bilder. Som medlem kan man hjärta sina favoritbilder från hela internet, så samlas de där. Och så kan man titta på vilka bilder andra människor hjärtat – och kanske hitta ännu fler nya favoriter. Skitfint!

Och så anar jag att det hädanefter kommer gå åt mycket tid på polyvore. Vem kunde tro att man kan finna så mycket nöje i att sätta ihop outfits? Men det är faktiskt kul. Lite utmanade, lagom kreativt. Lagom simpelt. Och jag är faktiskt inte helt ute och cyklar, känner jag. Titta bara:

Je suis IN LOVE de ces bottes Vivienne Westwood. J’envie celles (elle et elle aussi) qui ont pu s’offrir les vraies. Quand à moi j’ai trouvé un ersatz plutôt pas mal et qui me convient très bien… pour l’instant!  Vous en avez eu un petit apperçu dans une note précédente, et je vous les montre bientôt en détails (j’ai pris des photos ce matin, vous aurez donc tout ça demain!). En attendant voici un petit set Polyvore avec les bottes de mes rêves…les vraies…les seules.

Looklet, a social shopping, or better yet, social styling site is a new destination for the fashionista in all of us. The company, which motto states “We don’t sell clothes, we create looks,” offers users a large collection of curated pieces to mix and match on a variety of models. And though you can’t buy pieces through the site, I still consider Looklet to fall into the rogue retailer category.

I’ve spent some time over the past few weeks playing around with the “friendly beta” and while I think it’s a good concept, it falls a little flat for me in terms of usability and concept execution.

What I like

Good: The site has 135,000 registered users from around the world, which is a pretty high number for a fairly new product that has done little marketing.

Better: The usability of the ensemble tool is strong. Though the tool needs better filtering at the category level (color, style, etc) and more features at the items level. For example, users should be able to favorite items or add tags that are relevant to them. But overall, the tool is very easy to navigate.

Best: The best quality of Looklet.com is simply in the variety and quantities of the pieces. They offer thousands of pieces and are adding hundreds by the week.

What I don’t

Bad: I know it is all in line with Looklet’s mission, but I think they are missing the boat by not allowing users to add their own pieces. Even letting users make suggestions as to what should be added would be a nice first step. They are also missing the boat in not enabling users to easily share their looks.

Worse: While the usability of the tool is good, the usability of the site as a whole is poor. For example, it wasn’t intuitive that when I click on one of the images in the inspiration tab, that one of the articles of clothing featured would be added to the model. Since these are real people, wearing real clothes – I’d rather see more details on the piece and where I can buy it. Furthermore there is too much content on the home page. I know there is probably some useful information there, but I just can’t sift through it

Worst: There is something to be said for being able to see a look “on” versus just as an image – especially when building an ensemble. But the real value of these types of tools really comes from being able to see the clothes on a body-type similar to yours. All of the models are super skinny. Which at the end of the day may be fun for mixing, but doesn’t provide users with options to “try on” looks using a similar body type if one regularly eats sandwiches (or maybe even just salads)

All in all, I think that Looklet has a way to go before they have an impact on the industry. I did a quick Alexa comparison and this is how they stack up against Polyvore, The Gap, and Neiman Marcus. Their visits are low, which is to be expected since they’re a relatively new player. But they’ve seen a 93% positive increase over the past three months.

While the traffic numbers are low, I still think they’re worth keeping an eye on. Why? Because they’ve got a product that is engaging, which is obvious when you see how long their users are spending on the site.

And if the Looklet team can continue to attract new users, then brands are going to want to get their products in front of them.

Ble ittno søvn i natt… Føler meg helt på trynet nå, blir deilig å legge seg i dag. Nå har jeg vel ikke akkurat gjort mitt beste for å fikse døgnrytmen… egentlig litt mer sånn, eh, tvert imot. Så jeg har bare meg selv å takke, når alt kommer til alt
Sitter og diller på polyvore igjen nå. Tidsfordriv ja. Liv er et ukjent begrep, hoho.  Tenkte jeg skulle komme meg tidlig opp i morgen, så rekker jeg treninga uten for mange folk også. Sist jeg løp på tredemølla ble en teit fyr stående og glo på meg i evigheter. Dét var digg. Han bare SKULLE ha den tredemølla jeg brukte, enda det ble ledig både her og der.

Var på jobb i dag, mye å gjøre. Men da slapp vi iallefall å vase for mye rundt på slutten slik det ofte blir. Tenkte jeg skulle finne meg en brun, strikka lue. Men brunt er tydeligvis ut igjen? Hvorfor er det alltid sånn? Hver gang jeg finner ut at; oi, det der må jeg ha! så har alt bare forduftet… haha. Merkelige greier. Ikke greit å henge etter! Capsen kom jo ikke i dag heller, jeg begynner å bli litt desperat etter noe som kan skjule mitt skamklipte hår. Hm. Kanskje jeg må begynne å strikke ja…

Dagens låt! Funnet via min søster som har en forkjærlighet for gutter med emobriller. Ikke at det egentlig har noe med saken å gjøre. Sånn bortsett fra at man kanskje kan skimte et par slike briller i løpet av videoen et sted? Ellers synes jeg videoen var veldig søt. Kule capser, kjenner jeg blir litt misunnelig ja!
