POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) – A homeowner reportedly shot and killed an armed man in the driveway of his townhome early Tuesday morning.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said the homeowner was returning home to the Conch Key Villas complex at 439 NE 1st Street in Pompano Beach when he encountered the near his garage. The two struggled.

“He was able to wrestle the gun away from that would-be robber, according to the man. And he shot that man who is dead in his driveway,” said Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Dani Moschella.

[worldnow id=8827128 width=385 height=288 type=video]

Sheriff’s investigators have yet to say why the man was there.

“It’s unclear why this man would have been standing there with a gun at five-fifteen in the morning,” said Moschella.

Investigators don’t believe the armed man was alone. They’re looking for a black four-door car; possibly a Nissan, Mazda or Acura which sped away from the area at the time of the shooting.

“It might have been related, so we are looking for that car,” Moschella said.

One of the man’s neighbors said he’s seen a black car in the neighborhood lately.

“I have seen a black, dark car back here before that’s been sitting behind our place with the lights off, so just kind of keep an eye out, hope they find him,” said Justin Polnac.

Neighbors of the homeowner described him as a nice guy.

“Super gregarious guy, very friendly, always waves,” said Brian Greene.

“Very nice, very talkative, always stops and says hello and never any issues whatsoever,” said Polnac.

Danyielle Louis owns a pre-school about a half-block away from the scene. The shooting happened less than two hours before kids start to arrive. She said the neighborhood has been hit by crime before and she’s taken safety measures.

“We still feel safe, and our kids are safe. The parents are safe,” Louis said. “We have cameras. We have high security at the school. At our house, we have that as well.”

The sheriff’s office has not released the name of the homeowner or the person who died.

At this point, no one has been charged with a crime.

POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) – The Broward Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who was shot to death by a deputy in a Pompano Beach apartment building Monday night.

BSO Spokesperson Jim Leljedal said deputies responded to a disturbance call around 6:20 p.m. at the apartment complex at 811 SE 22nd Street. There they saw 53-year old Kenneth Shewey on the second floor armed with a handgun which he had pointed at another person.

“Any time someone has a weapon and they’re brandishing it or pointing it in anyone’s direction it’s a life and death situation,” said Leljedal.

Deputies ordered Shewey to drop the gun, but instead they say he fired a shot. Deputies again ordered Shewey to put down the weapon. Shewy, still holding the gun, entered the stairwell to descend to the first floor.

“He pointed the gun at a person. I don’t know whether any of our deputies were in the line of fire at that point or not, but the deputy ordered him to drop the gun and he did not drop the gun. He continued to advance and at that point he was shot and killed,” explained Leljedal.

“I heard a shot, then ‘boom boom boom’,” said Barbara Hoffman who lives nearby.

She said the incident left her “shaken.”

The deputy who fired the fatal shot has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
