Hello Young Bloggers,

I recently returned from my adventure in Paris (before that, Berlin), and I have some much-needed blogging to do. I couldn’t post pictures while I was traveling because card reader died over break (stupid Wal-Mart!). Anyway, I have much to tell, and much to show–I didn’t take as many pictures as I would have liked–mainly, I was just observing everything around me, and taking pictures of everything that excited me. The museums that I visited were all superb, and I would love to eventually post some paintings that stood out to me. Some highlights from the trip were the Pompidou (there were so many amazing women artists), The Musee d’Orsay, and the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. Oh, I really liked them all. Anyway, here are some of the photos I took.

As you can see, I did some sight-seeing, and some museum-hopping, but I really feel like I got to know Paris on more of a personal level. I didn’t get to see enough of Berlin, and I apologize for not having any good pictures to show of my adventures there. Paris, however, was magical, and I wish I had documented it better. Besides amazing art, the city had so much to offer–especially FOOD. Oh la la, I had some of the best food there: the best steak-frites in Paris, and I had the best bacon cheeseburger of my life (made complete with a very tasty dark beer) at an American bar. I will post more later, and I will soon post my favorite artists, and all my favorite artworks.

A toute a l’heure!

Well I don’t think I know Paris very well at all really, but thought I’d give a few suggestions:

- Pere Lachaise: go see the cemetery near Belleville/Menilmontant to see the incredible tombstones of Jim Morrisson, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Chopin. A great area too with great restaurants and bars nearby.

- Hotel Mamashelter: Philippe Starck designed hotel in the same Menilmontant/Belleville area, with funky bar downstairs serving great cocktails and cool little rooms. Cheap and in a good area.

- Restaurant Heureux comme Alexandre: For cheap (15 euros) fondu and a relaxed atmosphere: http://www.heureuxcommealexandre.com/pages-UK/2-restaurantsUK.html

- For a posh dinner try Georges at the top of the Pompidou or Les Ombres: http://www.lesombres-restaurant.com/restaurant.html. Just make sure you can swallow the £100+ per head tab.

Remember its also the 120th anniversary of the Eiffel tower this year so on the hour you get very cool lightshows!

Let’s have a good look at what we are talking about…by sharing some of the best vantage points to survey these cities. The obvious; in Paris – the Eiffel Tower, in New York – the Empire State Building, of course they give you that panoramic bird’s eye view of your surroundings, though at heights that obscure the finer details. As magnificent as they are, I find many other sites in both cities provide perspectives that are just as breath taking.

The historical restrictions on the height of buildings in central Paris lends itself to having a small number of extraordinary locations, while in New York the availability of so many office towers provides endless opportunities for less common but still striking views assuming you know someone with access to them.

In Paris, you must often climb many steps to be rewarded with such vistas. You can hike up inside the towers of Notre Dame and while communing with the spirit of Quasimodo, gaze down the Seine. A winding tour of the Pantheon, the final resting place of France’s great men and women, leads you up to a balcony that surrounds its dome. At the top of the Champs-Élysées, in the center of the world’s greatest traffic circle, the Arc de Triomphe will share its majestic view with you. Trek up the famous steps leading to Sacre Coeur where you will be able to take in a grand view overlooking all of Paris. From the Palais de Chaillots looking back across the Seine provides one of the most spectacular views of the Eiffel Tower.

The Galleries Lafayette can lend itself to skyline gazing on its rooftop terrace and the outdoor terraces in the Pompidou and D’Orsay museums offer more modest but still lovely views. The roof top sculpture garden at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY provides a delightful view of its Central Park surroundings.

A boat ride along the Seine offers a comfortable way of obtaining a sea level perspective of the heart of Paris from the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame. In New York the Statue of Liberty provides great views of NY harbor and the downtown financial district, which can also be experienced by taking the free Staten Island Ferry. From Rockefeller Park by the Battery the harbor continues to beckon and is especially captivating at sunset. There are boat tours which circumnavigate the island of Manhattan giving a complete water borne perspective of the island.

In NY driving offers opportunities not readily available by other means. The numerous major bridges surrounding Manhattan each provide dramatic views, especially recommended are the Brooklyn and 59th street bridges heading into the city. The Brooklyn Queens expressway passing over the Kosciusko Bridge looks out at the entire length of Manhattan.

In both the City of Lights and the City that Never Sleeps try to visit as many of these places after dusk as possible. But the real thrill in exploring these cities will be when you come across an unexpected scene of such beauty that it will stop you in your tracks and leave a big smile of wonder on your face.

We recently asked our Twitter followers, blog readers and Paris Hideaways friends their suggestions for Family Friendly Paris suggestions, which resulted in the following top ten suggestions. Enjoy the read and feel free to make further suggestions in the comment box below!

1. Cite des Sciences et l’Industrie (La Cite des Enfants)

Recommended by the most readers/followers and fans including ParisMB, the Cite des Sciences et l’Industrie is the top favorite of those travelling to Paris with kids. Science lovers young and not-so-young can enjoy the biggest science museum in Europe, which was created particularly with youth in mind. Located in the Parc de la Villette in the 19th, The Cite has a planetarium, a submarine, an IMAX theatre and a departments just for kids and teens (la cite des enfants is one of these).

www.cite-sciences.fr/english/index.php

30 Avenue Corentin Cariou Paris

2. Musee des Artes et Metiers

The second most recommended on the list was yet another science museum, this time the Musée des Arts et Métiers located in the rue Réaumur in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris. This somewhat misleadingly-named ‘Museum of Arts and Crafts’ boasts Foucault’s original pendulum, Formula One engines, and exhibits on everything from telecomms to quantum physics with a lot of hands on activities for kids of all ages.

Musee des Artes et Metiers

www.arts-et-metiers.net

60 rue Réaumur
Metro : Arts et Métiers

3. The Musee National d’Histoire Naturelle / Jardin des Plantes

Also a top recommendation and perhaps the most enthusiastically recommended by one of our readers, The National Museum of Natural History Museum and the Jardin des Plantes garden surrounding the museum together act as a full day out for the whole family. There is an evolution museum in a great hall filled with skeletons, specimens, organs and even genetic mutations! There is also a small-ish zoo, but beware – hours can be spent in this fun and walkable zoo.

The Musee National d’Histoire Naturelle / Jardin des Plantes

rue Cuvier, rue Buffon, rue Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire

Metro: Austerlitz

www.mnhn.fr

4. Parc de Belleville

Recommended by INVISIBLEPARIS among others, the Parc de Belleville is located on the hill of Belleville, and at 108 meters high, it is the highest park in Paris. and kids can climb a 30m tall terrace which provides panoramic views of Paris. Kids can let loose in the 1000m2 park, run among its 1200 trees, check out the 100m long waterfall fountain (the longest in Paris). There is also a purpose built wooden playground for kids, ping pong tables for all and an open-air theatre for the family to enjoy in the warmer months.

5. Jardin des Tuileries

This is the most central garden of Paris, and accordingly stunning. The Jardin des Tuileries is very near the Louvre, where you will inevitably visit at some point during your trip to Paris. During the summer the Fete Foraine is a ‘carnival’ of sorts, with a giant ferris wheel-slash-kid-magnet that adults love too, and the gardens and fountains throughout the park allow kids to run freely and safely while parents lounge in the many chairs and benches throughout the park.

1e arrondissement.

Metro: Tuileries

6. The Musée du Quai Branly

The newest addition to the major museums in Paris is this Ethnology Museum in the 7th. The exhibits are engaging for kids and the design of the building is very entertaining as well. The museum offers not only intelligent exhibits, but scientific events, a cinema, workshops for kids and classes, and both theatre and dance.

7th Arrondissement

Rue de l’Université / Quai Branly

www.quaibranly.fr

7. Paris Metro Line 14 – Front Seat

Kids get a kick out of sitting in the front seat of Metro line 14, an automated (driverless) line which crosses the center of Paris, from Saint Lazare and Olympiades. Line 14 does happen to pass through a few tourist sites such as the Church of the Madeleine, the Ministry of Finance, the Paris-Bercy sports area and gardens, Bercy village and the National Library of France. This was suggested by a an anonymous blog reader, and what a simple and easy idea to keep in mind to keep the kids entertained!

8. Bois de Boulogne

Slightly bigger than New York’s Central Park and over 3 times the size of Hyde Park in London, Bois de Boulongne is known as the ‘main lung’ of Paris, located on the western border of the city. Inside the park is the Jardin d’ Acclimatation, an amusement park which offers a zoo, rollercoasters, a carousel, swinging chairs, bumper cars, and even a railway, golf and a small waterpark. The lines here are almost non-existent and prices are much more economical than a trip out to one of the bigger amusement parks outside of Paris. Entrance is €2.90 per person (including kids 3 and above) with each ride costing the price of one ticket (around €2.70).

Bois de Boulogne
Western edge of the 16th Arrondissement

9. Centre Pompidou

While a modern art museum is not necessarily a place associated with Family-friendly tourism, it is the exterior design of the building that kids particularly love at Centre Pompidou, with its exposed airducts, outdoor staircases and primary-colored exterior paint-job. Also to note: Pompidou is closed on Tuesdays, while other museums are typically closed Mondays, making this a great place to visit with kids on a Monday, especially a rainy Monday.

Centre Pompidou

4th Arrodissement

19 rue Beaubourg
www.centrepompidou.fr

10. Disneyland Paris / Parc Asterix

It is with some reluctance that we include Disneyland Paris to this list of Top 10 ‘Paris for Kids’ recommendations. Several readers suggested Disneyland including FrenchTwistDC, and the theme park is obviously aimed at children. It is a perfect day outside of Paris, the kids will most likely love it, and so it is a safe option. Buy why go all the way to Paris and visit Disneyland? A more original option would be Parc Asterix, an amusement park based on the comic strip stories The Adventures of Asterix located just 20 miles from Disneyland Paris.

I miei collaboratori, per capirci, vanno a cento all’ora.

Walking, walking and walking. My dogs are barking. The Louvre in the morning, the Pompidou in the afternoon and the Arc de Triomphe in the evening. WOW.

I have already written about the Louvre, it was grand. I found a little crepe place for lunch and headed to the Pompidou. The Pompedou is the Paris Modern Art Gallery. I wasn’t sure what to think. Many people told me that it was OK, not their thing, but for the most part I like modern art. I walked through the Marais district and embraced the Pompidou.

At the front desk I asked what is the “can’t miss” art in the Musee’. They directed me to the permanent collection on the 5th floor. So away I go, I should tell you that the building is a piece of modern art itself. It is a museum that is turned inside out. All the mechanical guts are on the outside, not hidden in walls. The conduit, pipes, machinery, electric, and others are color coded. Water pipes are green, air conduit is blue, people moving machinery is red, etc. Very cool. Outside on the promenade is a people watching show. There are street performers, fun fountains, and lots of Parisian’s just hanging out. A party atmosphere, it’s happening.

Pompidou Musee'

I love this museum. Much of the art on the 5th floor is post impressionism, basically impressionism with no structure. There is art with raw emotion, some happy some sad and every thing in between. The colors and shape reflect the artist feelings and I find it fascinating. The art is very subjective and applied to the viewers feelings. I love the freedom.

This museum made me feel happy and young. To me the Pompidou was young and hip, new and fresh. The Louvre old and wise, the D’orsay middle aged with knowledge and youth. I love them all, in their own way.

Too much flash at the Pompidou Musee'

After I had a good viewing of the art, I went up to the restaurant on the top floor. This was recommended by every guide book and best done at sunset.

Paris, the sunset and a glass of vin. Perfection. Need I say more?

* * *

————————————————————-

well it was amazing, so so good!!

Not only did we get to visit the largest mcdonalds in europe, we got to meet disney characters and go on rides and have quality family time and buy loads of disney crap and see the parades and get scared on the rollercoasters etcc.

So happy days there, here are some snaps of things.

This last photo I really like as it purely reminds me of spirited away with all the lights on in an abandoned train station.

Disneyland was useful for my art as it also made me think of the 2D cartoons being the real things while the actual real 3D walking around characters were representations. This is quite interesting for me as its usually the other way round. The 2D being more valuable than the actual physical being.

On our day trip to Paris me and my Mum visited the Pompidou centre, it was amazing. SO brilliant, definitely the equivalent of the tate but in paris. I did feel whilst looking through the collection that it was very feminist based, and as I think feminism is great, it is only great up to a certain point. I believe that woman are definitely not discrimated against in the art world, bad art is discriminated against. You will only be seen as a good artist if you have good art. I felt whilst looking through that the gallery felt very differently to my own beliefs.

above is a Jim Hodges exhibition at the Pompidou which I found most fascinating. I won’t begin to evaluate it, but it was all about love, which is such a lovely subject which I think is possibly overlooked at the moment maybe due to it being so clicheed. I just really loved the simplicity of the work, and the aesthetic values, possibly the documentation of every flower he’d seen for twenty days being my favourite. It was similar to a documentation piece I’d done for my graded unit so I identfied immediately with it without having to look at the title or description.

I feel the highlight of the trip into paris was the meeting of a lifetime, a firm answer to my question of art and doubt.

Definitely one of those moments you’ll remember the rest of your life. I was so completely surprised that it was in the pompidou centre, well a version of it at least.

It made me just so overwhelmed. I had been so used to taking pictures with disney characters it was kind of a huge comparison to that, and it totally says something about art and the power it has.

I also pay a lot of credit to my mum for taking this photo as it really captures something mysterious about the value of art, the fact that I was so in awe as to just being in its presence.

So yeah, the trip was a complete success and I have every intention of going again very soon

au revoirr

While at the Centre Pompidou in Paris a couple of weeks ago, I took photos of some of the amazing modernist typography featured on the periodicals and catalogue covers that were on display. Really, really inspiring design. I especially like the typeface used on the cover of Intervention Surrealiste. I’d love to have a digital cut. Hmmm…maybe something to work on in my spare time. FontLab anyone?
