Pop art live!

Limenians head south on the weekends to their beach houses.  We checked out Fiorella’s families place (a real cool, sorta of Frank Lloyd Wright/Greek style), swam, got burned and then headed out for a delicious lunch of fried fish and a tacu-tacu,  a bean and rice dish with crab meat in a yellow cream sauce.  The fish dish, besides the shrimp, had calamari, octopus, mussels and sea found miscellanea and is served with Yuca fries which are really tasty and much lighter than potato.

The road to the south (and beyond) is the 29,000 mile long Pan-American highway.  The billboards along the 90km stretch we did were like studies in minimalism and pop-art.  As was the mural in the parking lot of the restaurant which could have doubled as a Lichtenstein or Warhol.

You have to give it up to gaga for her knowledge of the art world. she recreates and refers to works that she is influenced by and intrigued by in her videos, fashion, creative ideas and music. she is a talented artist who choses to do as she pleases… pleasing herself and sharing with those who know about art, her perspective and views. shes deep! she shared her admiration for such artists such as Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and many more.

Se acercan las Navidades y en esto de la música se nota. La maquinaria se fuerza en producir recopilatorios, ediciones de directos en CD y DVD, reediciones con algún que otro material inédito y novedades más que esperada.

Empezamos hablando de lo nuevo.

A pesar de no haber ganado el certamen, el paso de Adam Lambert por la última temporada de American Idol generó un gran revuelo gracias al enorme talento demostrado en el show. Así que no sorprende demasiado que a medida que se acerca la salida de su debut solista, la expectativa del público crece sin parar, a tal punto que los pedidos del álbum lo ubicaron en el primer puesto del chart de Amazon. El LP del moreno dejó atrás a lanzamientos de la talla del de Barbra Streisand, Madonna y los Beatles, entre muchos otros, imponiéndose en el primer lugar del ranking.

El 24 de noviembre es la fecha de salida del debut de Adam Lambert, quien confirmó la colaboración de diversos productores y compositores como Max Martin, RedOne y Ryan Tender, productores de Lady Gaga y One Republic respectivamente.

El pasado 2 de agosto Beyonce grabó I am…yours: An intimate performance at Wynn Las Vegas y la “Sacha Fierce”, para cerrar este inmejorable año, edita un CD+DVD con 30 canciones, alguna que otra perla de su etapa Destiny’s Child y material biográfico y backstage que seducirá a sus incondicionales.

Luego de la “Invasion” de sus maxisingles Boom Boom Pow y I gotta feeling, Los Black Eyed Peas presentan ahora “Invasion of Meet me halfway”. Entertainment Weekly: cuando el pegadizo funk – futurista del grupo se sincroniza con las melodias sin pudor femenino de Fergie, como en el dulcemente insidioso “Meet Me Halfway”, nos encontramos con un top 40 Nirvana Prefix Magazine: Meet Me Halfway, es notable sobre todo por ser la mejor balada new-wave hecha por los Black Eyed Peas.

En cuanto a los recopilatorios, celebramos el décimo aniversario de Britney Spears con tres opciones: un CD con sus 17 mayores éxitos y el inédito “3″, un CD+DVD o una caja especialmente ideada para fans con 29 temas, videoclips cronológicos de Britney y un libreto especial con imágenes exclusivas y comentarios divertidos y curiosos sobre cada canción.

ECDL hace doblete al publicar Radio la Colifata presenta a El Canto del Loco y Por mí y por todos mis compañeros. El primero es un proyecto en el que regraban en Argentina 18 de sus éxitos y un tema inédito Quiero aprender de ti, dedicado a los internos del Hospital Borda. El segundo son versiones realizadas por El Canto del Loco de clásicos de Smash, Piratas, Quique González-Enrique Urquijo, Los Ronaldos, Joan Manuel Serrat, Brighton 64, Los Brincos, Carlos Cano, Loquillo y los Trogloditas, Cecilia y María Jiménez.

Otro de los repasos a una larga carrera está en The very best of Enya, que recoge canciones como “Orinoco flow”, “Anywhere is”, “Caribbean blue”, “Book of days” o “Amarantine” y de una versión inédita de “Aniron”, canción incluida en la BSO de “El señor de los anillos.

El 24 de Noviembre se pone a la venta el nuevo disco de Kepa Junkera, titulado “Kalea”.

“Kalea” (calle en euskera), es la segunda parte de la trilogía sobre las canciones tradicionales vascas que se inició el año pasado con “Etxea”, un disco que llegó al número 10 en listas de ventas y que ha vendido mas de 25.000 copias hasta la fecha.

Kepa ha viajado en esta ocasión al continente americano para encontrarse y grabar con multitud de artistas que han interpretado en euskera algunas de las mas bellas canciones vascas. Desde Juanes a Lila Downs pasando por Pablo Milanés, Ximena Sariñana, León Gieco, Lito Vitale, Carlinhos Antunes o Patricia Sosa, artistas de Chile, Colombia, Argentina o Brasil participan en este proyecto que traspasa las barreras de un idioma ancestral.

“Kalea” contiene 24 canciones en un doble CD y se publicará en un formato de lujo que incluye un extenso libreto con textos, comentarios de cada canción y letras en euskera y castellano.

No podemos olvidar que Lady Gaga nos ofrece un doble CD en formato Digipack para reeditar su álbum debut y ocho temas inéditos más con el nombre The fame: monster. Bad romance es el adelanto y también se incluye una colaboración con Beyoncé.

Por su parte, Laura Pausini ha querido recopilar en Laura Live las mejores actuaciones de su gira de este año. Sus grandes temas en su versión en directo grabados en Helsinki, Madrid, Los Ángeles, New York, Santiago de Chile, Barcelona, México DF, Hollywood Florida, Santo Domingo… además de tres nuevas canciones en estudio y videoclips.

The fall es el cuarto álbum de estudio de Norah Jones, que se aleja un poco del ‘folk’ para apostar en un sonido con guitarras eléctricas y baterías más marcadas.

 El álbum, que tiene como primer sencillo el tema Chasing pirates, llega con una versión ‘deluxe’ y ’standart’, en los formatos CD y vinilo. Jones contó con colaboradores como Jacquire King, productor e inginiero de sonido de artistas como Kings of Leon, Tom Waits o Modest Mouse.

 Entre los compositores reclutados por la cantante figuran Ryan Adams y Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, además de su habitual colaborador Jesse Harris, el cual hizo despegar su carrera cuando creó el éxito ‘Don’t know why’.

Otro directo de auténtico lujo es Good evening New York City de Paul McCartney. Una de la figuras claves de la música repasa 33 clásicos en más de dos horas y media de su paso por The Beatles, los Wings y en solitario.

Mañana nos desayunaremos el cuarto y esperado trabajo de Rihanna, Rated R. Un disco compuesto por 13 canciones en el que la de Barbados pasa página personal y confía la producción a un elenco de lo más interesante que va desde Ne-Yo a Justin Timberlake, Chase & Status, a The-Dream, Tricky Stewart o Stargate.

Timbaland es uno de los pocos que presentan material 100% inédito estos días. Su shock values vol. 2 cuenta con colaboraciones de SoShy, Nelly Furtado, Katy Perry, Jojo y Miley Cirius; entre otros.

I have always loved the anonymous painting, Dogs Playing Poker and so I especially love Silas Kopf’s take on  it in the below masterpiece, “I Think I Only Have A Pair”.

After an exhaustive and exclusive interview with Silas – spanning days, weeks, decades perhaps, in which I followed him around everywhere he went (at times with leaves taped to my turtleneck, jeans, and  wooden platform shoes, [in keeping with the elements of his work], in an attempt to get some candid anecdotalities), even going so far as to hire muscle to forcibly hook him up to various thought-stealing apparatus’, lie detectors, intravenous truth-serum drips, and the like – I managed a rare act of brevity, summarizing all of my notes into the following quote  from Silas regarding his work and the insinuations in this article:

“Perhaps Mr. Munger sees more than I do, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t subliminal perspective.”

It is yet too soon soon to tell if he will succumb to suggestive thought suggestion tactics administered by said muscle and present this piece to Gnome de Pluehm for his birthday bash tomorrow- which I am overseeing in this blog – but we can all only hold our breath and hop (typo, but I’m keeping it).

It is a fine line between Pop Art and kitsch. When Pop first made its way into the art world in the late 1950’s many regarded the movement as kitsch, basically mundane without any real artistic content. What are we to think of an artist who reverses the order, taking kitsch and trying to make it Pop? This is the direction of Silas Kopf’s entry, I Think I Only Have A Pair, in the recent Salon de la Marqueterie Biennial in Marseilles.
Kopf played off the famous painting by C. M. Coolidge of Dogs Playing Poker (1904) (sometimes called “The Bold Bluff”) and turned it on its head by using popular figures apparently involved in a game of cards. I say apparently because there is much more behind the imagery than a simple bit of gambling. At the table are the cartoon figures; Betty Boop, Mr. Peanut, and Daffy Duck. Seated between Duck and Peanut is the pop icon Marilyn Monroe. And does that shock of white hair at the bottom of the picture belong to Andy Warhol himself?

At first glance this appears little more than a cute image of characters engaged in a game of poker. Closer examination reveals many levels of complexity in this deftly executed wooden panel. We rarely see craftspeople draw on art history in executing their works, but it is obvious that Kopf has more than a passing familiarity with Hogarth’s The Rake’s Progress. It won’t be evident to many that Kopf is also referencing the 14th Egyptian Dynasty mural from the tomb of Rehkmire of men playing a game of senet.

Kopf’s gamblers make an odd grouping. Those familiar with his work from the last decade won’t be surprised to see the return of Mr. Peanut and Betty Boop. They were first seen in his 2004 piece, The Gladiators (which was a minor hit on internet porn sites). One wonders if I Think I Only Have A Pair is a sequel or a prequel. The tension in the current work is palpable. Boop appears to fidget nervously unsure of the game. Peanut rises to his full haughty grandeur, jauntily tipping his hat, knowing he is in control. And why shouldn’t he be confident. He has most of the chips! Kopf seems to be making a statement about corporate America and how one of its most important symbols is in charge. He has control of the game and the purse strings and therefore he is dominating the lives of those around him. Is Peanut a cheat? Just what might he be hiding under that top hat?

Poor Marilyn Monroe (literally poor, as she is almost out of chips). Is she a bad player or have others simply taken advantage of her innocence? It is clear that Peanut and Boop don’t have a monopoly on the sexual tension in the picture. Monroe and Duck are sharing more than a side of the table. Each has a hand below the table. Passing cards or copping a feel? You be the judge. Duck’s leering at the pair of the title will make most viewers more than a little uncomfortable. It is difficult to attach a racial aspect to the picture, but it is equally difficult to imagine that an artist of Kopf’s thoughtfulness would have used a black duck and the symbol of white female sexuality unconsciously. Why not the white Donald Duck or the less curvy Olive Oyl? It should be noted that both Daffy Duck and Marilyn Monroe gained fame in the 1950’s, when inter-racial dating was considered somewhat scandalous. Boop and Peanut both came from the swinging twenties, making I Think I Only Have A Pair encompass the sweep of twentieth century America.

The final bit of iconography involves money, wealth, fame, along with sex (isn’t sex really about the money?). Peanut is slowly growing his fortune. The individually colored stacks have grown so large that he is no longer able to keep them organized. He will stop at nothing to dominate the “weaker” sex. Boop seems vulnerable to Peanut (although The Gladiators depicted her holding her own and on top, bringing into question the prequel/sequel issue. No doubt that discussion will have to wait for a longer monograph on Kopf’s career). Although Daffy Duck has quite a bit of the money he is living up to his name, and his chips are all ajumble. The one player whose chips we can’t see is Warhol. Perhaps it is he who has the most chips by parlaying Pop Art into the money making machine that it turned out to be.

El autorretrato es uno de los ejercicios de análisis más profundos que puede hacer un artista. Implica escrutarse el rostro y conocerse hasta tal punto que la expresión que tenga en ese momento se traduzca en el dibujo o la pintura que aborda. En épocas pictóricas como el barroco o el renacimiento, una de las costumbres era que el artista se autorretratara dentro de un gran cuadro, para reafirmar su autoría o para dar a entender sus intenciones, como lo hizo Velázquez.

Un autorretrato no necesariamente implica un género realista. Tampoco implica necesariamente el término asociado a la pintura. Existe como recurso literario, muy próximo a la prosopografía y la etopeya.
