“I just wish that I could disappear, Someone take me far away from here, Do you suppose there’s more to life out there?”

Sometimes it really catches me off guard how some song lyrics can perfectly express what I’m thinking… probably because the writer has had the same feelings, duh. Anyway, The Summer Obsession, one of my pop-punk guilty pleasures, truly offer up some great songs when I’m feeling down. This Is Where You Belong, TSO’s debut 2006 release from Virgin Records, is full of “get me the hell outta here” anthems. Within one or two listens, you can’t help but belt out every ultra-catchy chorus. The song that originally got me hooked on the foursome and continues to concisely convey my current situation is “Disappear.” Enjoy.

SF Firehydrant was one of those bands that I was into when I first started going to shows in 01/02 that was before the time of their specific style being “in”. A mix of pop-punk and occasional screaming vocals, this band was a staple for me at AMC. I know they have other material (including my favorite song by them, “Brim”) but I have yet to track it down. I’m not sure of the early history of this band, but I know at some point they changed their name to Essef briefly before breaking up. Their singer Matt joined Kilowatt, Paul Menotiades’ first post-Punchline endeavor, along with Derek White of Substandard and Tel Star. Unfortunately that band lasted about as long as a fish out of water. Anyway, check out SF Firehydrant’s only(?) official EP. Big thanks to AJ for hooking me up with this CD.

On Thursday I interviewed Ty Vaughn, vocalist and guitarist for Oregon pop punk act Broadway Calls.

On Thursday I interviewed Ty Vaughn, vocalist and guitarist for Oregon pop punk act Broadway Calls. We talked about being a pop punk band from a hardcore scene in an indie rock state, singing in the shower and The Smiths.

On Portland’s musical heritage: “We don’t fit with typical Portland bands… The Decemberists, The Thermals, those guys. But Oregon means a lot to us.”

On converting from playing hardcore punk to pop punk: “The hardcore scene really welcomed us with open arms. I think the kids enjoyed having a break, something they could sing along to.” EB: I know hardcore scenes can be closed-minded. “If anyone was closed-minded, it was me… I didn’t want to play hardcore shows, but all our friends were in hardcore bands and we couldn’t get any others. I’m glad we did it now, though.”

On influences: “Green Day were a huge influence on us… well, everything they did more than a decade ago. They’re still one of my favourite bands though.”

On Billie Joe Armstrong’s part on signing the band to his label, Adeline Records: “He didn’t. I think right before American Idiot he realised he couldn’t juggle playing in a band, touring and running a record label while still having time for his family.”

On Warped Tour: “It’s… exhausting. You’re normally getting up at 07:30, and if you want to hang out at all after the show you don’t get to bed until past 12. It’s two months long. There’s no intimacy at all. But you meet so many people… we probably would never have gotten this record deal if not for Warped Tour.”

On basement gigs and festival shows: “It’s completely different. We like both. At Reading I saw Gallows, and that was amazing… for most of the gig most of the band were playing out in the crowd. They’re a great band.”

On The Smiths’ position of reverence within the US hardcore punk scene: “I didn’t get it for a long time. You’d go to shows and there’d be hardcore kids with “The Smiths” tattooed on their arms. But they were a great band.” Broadway Calls have often covered Smiths songs live and on record.

Favourite Broadway Calls songs: “Back to Oregon. It’s the best love song I’ve written, and it’s a great singalong at a show. And Basement Royalty, cause it reminds me of my friends and I back in the day…”

Favourite bands: “Green Day. They just always will be.” On Green Day or Blink 182: “Green Day of course, but for the record I love them both.”

Favourite song: “Trusty Chords by Hot Water Music.”

If you could open for anyone, who would it be? “Refused.” [The seminal Swedish punk band who broke up immediately after releasing the classic The Shape of Punk to Come: A Chimerical Bombination in 12 Bursts]

Whose songs do you sing in the shower? “My own. I’ve come up with some of my best lines in the shower.”

Hardcore or post-hardcore? “Hardcore.”

Hip hop or drum ‘n’ bass? “Hip hop.”

Death metal or grindcore? “I’m not sure I know the difference between those…”

Emo or crunk? “Emo.”

Black Flag or Bad Brains? “Black Flag.”

Tupac or Biggie? “Tupac. Gotta keep it west coast, you know?”

Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee? “That’s a hard one… Chuck Norris, I suppose.”

Katy Perry or Lady Gaga? “Lady Gaga.”

Mickey Mouse or Darth Vader? “Darth Vader.”

Pirates or ninjas? “Pirates.”

Swine flu or bird flu? “Um… I’m not sure of the symptoms, but… bird flu.”

Broadway Calls are supporting Set Your Goals at the Islington Academy on 16th December.

He esperado horas para esto
He enfermado tanto

After I’d received my rejection from Jen, I spent most of Monday in a sort of daze. Almost the first

After I’d received my rejection from Jen, I spent most of Monday in a sort of daze. Almost the first thing I did was log onto iTunes and buy the album ‘Jane Doe’ by Converge. The last time I listened to Converge was when I had had a minor identity crisis/nervous breakdown the year before. The music can best be described in one word as ‘angry’. A very angry man, screaming over walls of angry guitars, bass and drums for 45 angry minutes. It is pain, anger and suffering distilled into music. Even better, this particular album was written exclusively about the vocalist’s (I refrain from saying singer) relationship break-up. As such, it is the perfect album for emotional turmoil. I also bought some other music – my reflex action in such situations is to retreat into the protective shell of music and spending money. But this music, I am less proud of. I bought an album by a band called Matchbook Romance. It was written about a break-up too. But it’s pop-punk. Or even worse, emo. Emo is a dirty word to most serious music fans. It used to be a dirty word to me. My 17-year-old self was a terrible music snob, and full-on hypocrite. I would mercilessly insult anyone who listened to Panic! At The Disco, or Fall Out Boy, and yet in private I had a sneaking liking for these bands. They’ve always been guilty pleasures for me; stick a half-decent pop melody over some power chords and then sing about a girl and there’s a good chance I’ll listen, even if I won’t admit to it. Since I met Jen, this sneaking enjoyment has become full-on, obvious love. A few weeks after I first met her and realised how I felt, I bought a New Found Glory album. And then another. I haven’t stopped listening to them since. I can’t help it; it’s like a disease that I can’t shake off. They’re catchy, cathartic, and bouncy, with great lyrics that speak to the wounded teenager in me. The fact that they are grown men, slightly older than me, but definitely not teenagers, only makes it better. Or worse. Neither does the fact that I am no longer a teenager bother me in the slightest. You see, I have a theory as to why people above the age of 21 don’t listen to pop-punk and emo. Theory seems too grandiose a word, actually, for an idea that popped into me head while walking home, half-cut. But I name it such nonetheless. I’d like to believe that people lose the need for pop-punk when they’re older, because their lives become more settled. They find a girl, and they’re able to keep them. They learn to move on, they learn not to torture themselves over women. They learn from the mistakes of their younger selves. All this would be very comforting, if it were true. But the divorce rate would beg to differ, as would the people in their 20s that I know who have been through horrible break-ups or are alone. People don’t lose their need for pop-punk. For all I know, they carry on listening to it in secret, as a guilty pleasure. But for the most part, they wean themselves off it, out of guilt for their listening habits. Coolness never ceases to be important, no matter what you’re told, and it’s difficult to maintain an image of being a successful, happy 20-something when you’re blasting out ‘My Friends Over You’ from your Bang & Olufsen. I have no such concerns. I have never been cool, or had people believe that I was. So I can listen to whatever the hell music I want. So there.

Re: pop punk updates (dress code, music, etc…)

Attn: pop punk fans, as we find ourselves in a post-Lookout! world the guide lines and definitions of pop punk are changing. It is time we re-evaluate the genre and styles. Here are a few key points the pop punk figureheads all agreed on during the annual meetings at the Insub-Fest, Gainsville-Fest and Riot-Fest…

dress code:
-blue cut off jeans (to be cut at the knee and threads left hanging, both men and women are expected to adhere to this mandatory fashion and discard all full length pants save for two pairs of levis [skinny fit preferred but 501's are acceptable for heavier set people or mid-west residents] for winter wear)
-thick framed glasses (even if not prescribed)
-band shirts (nothing older than 2000 unless SubPop or SST related)
-plaid flannels (fun if you’re a boy or a girl)
-footwear shall either be standard chuck taylors or cross trainers (any leather shoe is unacceptable)
-hoodies (replacing leather and gas station jackets of days of old, these cotton wonders are far more animal friendly and do not support the looks of the attendants of the fascist big business gas companies that are ruining our planet)
*note: ball caps and beards are encouraged as well (for both genders).

music:
-cookie monster vocals highly endorsed (who needs harmony or vocal talent when one can growl or rouse throaty group choruses?)
-lyrics shall now contain obscure references to literature or landmarks, depressing content, mention of alcohol consumption and love and romance should only be sung of the the past tense in a heartbroken and sour manner, female praise should only be given as much as self deprecation in any particular song
*note: under no circumstances should the lyrics contain any self esteem, swagger or cockiness (let’s leave that to those hipsters)
-breakdowns and harmonic leads are here by officially endorsed
-while Ramones-core is not completely frowned upon (yet) it is only appropriate from groups with former sidemen from Screeching Weasel and the Queers, Canadians, Europeans and Chicago residents.
*note: vocals should now favor Danny Vapid over Ben Weasel for this particular sub-genre.
-GPC is the official guitar choice

random:
-bikes and skateboards are preferred over cars for urban dwellers (let’s keep it green)
-stance on Green Day depends on company

Offering a solid progressive follow-up album, Cheap Girls are the current experts on paying homage to 90’s alternative and powerpop – if not the only experts in the field today. With last year’s debut Find Me a Drink Home, you might be reminded of 90’s greats The Lemonheads, Archers of Loaf, and sometimes Dinosaur Jr. My Roaring 20’s offers familiar comparisons as they don’t stray far from that original style, but Cheap Girls really shine on this album with an added twangy, bluesy acoustic element to their alt-powerpop. Compared to their debut, this album gives off more of a southern vibe (despite their Michigan location).

As they seem to really be coming into their own on this release, there’s good energy from start to finish on this album. Steady mid-tempo to fast drums behind poppy strumming and catchy, melodic guitar riffs keep the album upbeat yet mellow from start to finish. Cheap Girls still retain that 90’s alternative influence and mash it with a more folky drinking-song style for an overall feel-good experience.

While he’s not the most talented vocalist, Ian Grahm’s unique smooth and folky style is consistent; leaving a lasting impression. Just as with Find Me a Drink Home, lyrics remain honest and creative as they stick to the album title’s theme. While they’re a bit meloncholy, the catchiness of the tunes offers sing alongs throughout the entire album. Stand-out catchy lyrics are in the end track, “One & Four” as he belts with melodic sadness “Where did you come from? Where did you go?” in each catchy chorus. “Hey, Hey I’m Worn Out” offers a sing along of the track’s title a few times throughout. Over the twangy guitars, Grahm’s voice is nearly intoxicating, fitting well into these perfect drinking tunes.

My Roaring 20’s is the perfect follow up album. Cheap Girls retain their awesome influences as they take on their own unique style and bring something new to the table in today’s independent music scene.

Yes, I know that this album was released in 2003. However, recently, it’s been playing a lot while I’m at home so I figured I might as well write about it. I don’t know what it is about Blink 182 that makes me like this album so much, but I love it. It might be that Travis Barker, whether you love him or hate him, is one of the best drummers in recent years. His drumming is intricate, adding a whole new layer to the music and fleshing out the sound for the trio. It might be that they have two different vocalists, Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge, who can alternate between sounding heartbroken, angry, giddy, and a wide range of other emotions. It might be that the simple lyrical content actually makes the songs stronger; they are easy to relate to and won’t make you scratch your head wondering what they really mean. You just listen and bob your head and hope that the energy in these songs is transferred to you by some sort of cosmic intervention. Or it might be that these three guys write some very catchy pop songs which I just can’t stop listening to. Yeah, that might be it.
