Last night Racked broke the news that a Target pop up shop featuring holiday gifts, and some of the new Rodarte for Target pieces will make an appearance in NYC’s meatpacking district next week. Now Fashionista is reporting that the pop up will grace not only NYC, but Washington D.C and San Francisco as well! Yesterday I was reassured by Target’s PR department that official images will be out next week. But I can’t wait to finally see some of the pieces in person!

The pop up launches with a press preview on Thursday, and will be open to the public from December 11-13th, 10am-8pm. According to Fashionista, the locations are as follows:

“New York: Gansevoort Street & Washington (at the High Line)
Washington D.C.: M Street & Wisconsin Avenue (Georgetown)
San Francisco: 5th Street between Market & Mission (Mint Plaza)”

I’m so excited that Target is continuing the tradition of pop up shops in nyc! If the holiday/Rodarte pop up is anything like the Anna Sui for Target store I went to during fashion week (where I met Anna Sui herself!), or the Bullseye Bodega, it should be amazing.

Edit: A few of the official images recently showed up on InStyle:

Also just in case you missed it: There is a Rodarte sample sale tomorrow! (I’m going, so expect a full report later this week!) I hear it’s rather booked, but it might be possible to still make an appt. Info here.

Holt Renfrew will open it’s first ever pop-up shop this week. “The Fashion House” condo development on King St. W is obviously catering to a fashion-forward crowd by hiring local designers Jeremy Laing and Greta Constantine to decorate the building’s lobbies, and now by getting Holt’s to host a self-described unisex pop-up collection. The shop will be open from December 2 – 6 at 560 King St. W.

The coolest way to skate this winter has to be at Somerset House, London. Tiffany & Co present the 10th anniversary Ice Rink this winter adorning it with a little touch of sparkle and a giant Tiffany & Co Christmas tree. After a chilly skate you can warm your hands with a warm cup of Tiffany Tea! Need a sugar boost? Head over to the Tiffany Pop Up “Tuck” Shop. Yum Yum!

Inside the big blue present is like every big girls dream. Tiffany cupcakes and candy canes, peacocks and dears, and glitter and DIAMONDS! Lots of Diamonds. A cupcake or candy cane is a steal at £2.50 a fraction of the price of the sparkles.

Just a quick one to help spread the word; Print Club London will be opening a pop up shop for one weekend only. The fun starts on Friday the 18th of December with a private view and runs through to 6pm on Sunday the 20th.

I have to say that after Secret Blisters I’m looking forward to this a lot. The work that night was amazing and I came away with this fine print from Anthony Peters (who incidentally will, amongst others, have work available at the pop up shop), so I have high expectations this time round.

You’ll find the shop on Brick Lane (I think) and prints will be available from thirty-five pounds so I hope that I haven’t spent all my money on Christmas presents/boozed it all away by then

The term ‘pop-up shop’ seems to have been thrown around quite a lot recently; with fashion designers, artists and well-known brands opening temporary shops across the country. The trend for these fashionable units is a result of both the recession and throw-away fashion; what better way to stay on top of the style game than to close shops after just six months and move on to ‘the next big thing’?!

Last year London became thoroughly ‘pop-tastic’, with shops, restaurants and art galleries taking over the city’s coolest areas. There was a massive rise in portable restaurants, like the Reindeer Restaurant and Flash, and also art galleries like the Proud Gallery, which started merely as a marquee over a car park. Even retail expert Mary Portas opened a hyper pop-up, open for just one hour and selling vintage clothes, and again this year she teamed up with Grazia to open a charity shop in Westfield.

The trend has continued to grow with On|Off, Doc Martens, and heritage brand Baracuta joining the list of pop-ups. Even London Fashion Week fuelled a host of pop-ups across the Capital.

But it’s not just London benefitting from these shops, this year the trend has come to Birmingham.

Back in September, Councillor Martin Mullaney headed up the Style in the City fringe, Pop Up in the City. Using an empty unit on Corporation Street, he worked with a 14 local designers to open a market-place for shoppers during the three-day fashion and beauty festival.

Now that Christmas is here, Harvey Nichols has re-opened their Christmas pop-up gift shop on Level 3 of The Mailbox, selling the best Christmas gifts and to-die-for hampers. They are also holding a Festive Fete for shoppers on 30 November.

Jewellery festival Brilliantly Birmingham has also jumped on board the pop-up train. Teaming up with Pavilions, the temporary boutique will be open from 5-24 December and will showcase a number of designers, giving shoppers the opportunity to buy original hand-crafted jewellery and commission bespoke pieces.

But the latest and one of the most exciting of the pop-ups to arrive in the city comes courtesy of Punch Records and the Sauce Gallery. Pioneering typographer, sleeve designer and artist Swifty will be setting up shop at the Sauce Gallery in Custard Factory from Saturday 12 December 2009-10 January 2010. From originals and one-off prints, to T-shirts, skateboards and stickers, Swifty fans will have plenty to choose from. Partly inspired by Peter Blake’s ‘Toy Shop’, it will also feature Swifty’s Newsagents installation and be home to the A-Z of Swifty Show. For more info, go to www.punch-records.co.uk.

So, it looks like the pop-up trend is going strong, and I have to say that I’ll champion it all the way. An article by The Times summed pop-ups up perfectly, calling them “The epitome of our high-speed, short-attention-span culture.”

Not only do pop-ups keep the cool crowd entertained but they also gives artists and young designers a platform to showcase their work. They also makes the most of empty and under-used units. A win-win all round, I’d say!

Save Fashion officially opened this morning. But last night special guests got to shop early, and celebrate Save Fashion’s return at the opening night party.

When I arrived, the party was already at capacity, and the line was 30 people deep. After a short wait outside in the wind, we were allowed in. This was my first time at Inven.tory, but I’d been meaning to go for ages. The space is pretty large, and laid out much better than the first Save Fashion pop up shop at Port Authority was. Racks and racks of clothing lined the walls, accompanied by a small bar area, and a DJ booth. The event was so packed it took a few minutes to make it from the front to the back of the store, where the shoes (what I was looking for) were located. The shoe selection was much better than last time–I snagged a cute pair of bright blue Devotte sling-back sandals for $45!

While mingling with the crowd, I spotted a few Inven.tory staffers:

And ran into my new friend Chrissy, who recognized me from the internet (from another site)!

The huge crowd of shoppers.

There were lots of fashionable guests as well:

PICTURE THIS: YOU ARE WEARING WHAT THIS WEEK’S DAZEDDIGITAL.COM HAS PREDICTED TO BE THE HOTTEST THREE TRENDS OF A/W 09, IN ONE OUTFIT. YOU ARE EXPERIENCING THE FIRST POP-UP VIRTUAL MUSIC FESTIVAL IN CENTRAL LONDON, AT THE CENTRE OF WHICH IS A

HOLOGRAM OF FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE, BELTING OUT HER LATEST TUNE. OF COURSE, YOU ARE RECORDING IT ON YOUR

IPHONE WHILST TWITTERING AWAY ABOUT HOW AMAZING IT IS. LATER YOU BLOG IT AND ADD ALL THE FOOTAGE TO FACEBOOK AND YOUTUBE. IN A SINGLE

SCENARIO YOU ARE A MASCOT FOR SOME OF THE LATEST TRENDS IN MUSIC, FASHION, CULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY. CHECK YOU OUT! BUT DON’T GET TOO EXCITED, YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO BASK IN THESE TRENDS FOR VERY LONG.

What is most visible about trends is their ever-increasing transient nature: no sooner has one trend come along, another is appearing on the horizon and we want to know about it. So why the obsession and how are they all

affecting us?

If we look at evolution, consider the ‘Me Tarzan, you Jane’ era for a moment, social cohesion, adopting modes of behaviour and appearance and being part of a community is human nature.

This explains the desire to follow trends in order to ‘fit in’ but has the over-exposure to so many trends and the speed at which they change, invited us to want to, not only stand out from the crowd but ahead of them? I spoke to Tom Savigar, a director (and fountain of knowledge about the future) at leading trend forecasting agency, The Future Laboratory. He tells me that, “trends of the attitudinal type, such as those involving style and those formed by opinion, evolve faster. The amount of cultural references we are exposed to is so many, that people become more fickle and thus attention spans become shorter.” This results in ‘an appetite for change’, and thus we all end up pursuing new trends faster. On top of this it seems, no longer content with just jumping on the bandwagon, we also want to be the first to adopt new trends and even be the instigator of them. A hard lot to please, no?

Plex is very proud and excited to announce our participation in “Worth Your Salt,” Object Design League’s Pop-Up shop, produced in partnership with Chicago design boutique Pavilion, and sponsored by Orion Offset and Subports. Plex will be displaying and selling our Temari Japanese Art Ball, from Black Friday through December 11th. We kindly invite anyone interested in joining us at the opening reception on November 27th (Black Friday) from 5-9 PM at Pavilion.

The Temari is a traditional Japanese ball, which prior to the advent of rubber and plastic, was an everyday object in every Japanese child’s life. Since the industrial revolution the Temari has shifted from being a utilitarian toy, to being recognized for its intricate and beautiful stitching and colors. Today the Temari is used either as a charm to adorn bracelets and mobile phones, beautiful holiday ornaments, or as a larger household decoration, adding warm splashes of color to any room, easy to replace and customize for any time of year or special occasion.

In an environment of growing technological dominance, Plex would like the Temari Art Ball to remind homeowners of the importance of hand craft and everyday beauty. The evolving meaning and use of the Temari is a reminder of the necessity of change, and with the new line of fun and modern color pallettes, we hope for you to find your own use and meaning for the Temari Art Ball in your life.

When big players like Gucci and Proctor & Gamble jump on the same marketing boat and throw up a

When big players like Gucci and Proctor & Gamble jump on the same marketing boat and throw up a pop-up shop, it warrants a closer look. Pop-Up shops appear overnight in trendy venues and operate under the magnetism of urgency, exclusivity, and novelty to draw in curious consumers before killing the lights, closing the shutters, and locking the door. They are, for the most part, purely a branding and marketing play with little to no focus on revenue. Pop-Up stores open long enough to launch a new product, meet some explosive, immediate brand exposure goals, or to get a read on the latest consumer attitude.

Target’s 2007 pop-up showcase of the high-fashion, low cost Proenza Schouler line in New York City lasted 96 hours. Gap took a more mobile approach with their ‘60s style promotion and filled up a bus full of beachwear that made short stops at the beaches of New York and Los Angeles.

Pop-Up Done Right

Pop-Ups are quick, visible, and cheap. They can operate for less than the cost of advertising on television. With good PR, a $200,000 week-long pop-up investment can generate plenty of media attention. The U.S. Potato Board, with spokesman Mr. Potato Head, did just that with their New York City-based Thanksgiving week store promoting the nutritional value of potatoes.

“We were featured in The New York Times, in the network morning shows, and in many places,” reported Amy Kull of communications firm Fleishman-Hillard. “We could never have bought that much media within that budget.”

Near Success

Gucci fell short of achieving a chic and trendy image boost from a sneaker pop-up, showcasing DJ Mark Ronson’s branded footwear line, in New York City last weekend. While stars like Claire Danes and Mary J Blige were much in evidence, public confusion on the opening time left potential real Gucci consumers out in the cold. Reports that Gucci staff outnumbered customers the first few days highlight a major promotional blunder for a concept which measures success—like movie studios—on opening weekend attendance.

Repulsive or Genius?

A more alarming tale of pop-up culture is toilet paper manufacturer Charmin’s take on the marketing tool. ‘Charmin Ambassadors’ are being sought to work pop-up bathrooms in Times Square for the next five weeks . . . and blog about the experience. Ambassadors will be “maintaining their own blogs and content on Charmin-branded Web sites and popular social media sites, and sharing family-friendly video from the restroom space and surrounding areas,” states the Business Courier of Cincinnati.

The upcoming “Enjoy the Go” campaign is testament to the success Charmin feel they gained from their 2008 “Plush Potties for the People” coast-to-coast traveling pop-up store. But how effective is novelty as a marketing tool when it borders on repulsive?

Pop-up retail is ultimately a branding play, providing a great platform for creative marketing with minimal risk. Gucci’s snafu and Charmin’s lack of taste in their pop-up enterprises will not hurt their product lines or negatively impact revenue, but a little brand equity might have just gone down the tubes.

BBB’s 2nd floor ballroom was the perfect location for the shop, providing a beautiful interior for the one-off designer clothes and statement accessories to be displayed. NJAL’s first pop up shop was a great success, meaning that there will be plenty more to come-they are already planning their next location as we speak…

At a time when luxury sales are approaching revival, Gucci is getting their name out there in all the right ways. They have partnered up with Mary J. Blige’s charity and were present on Thursday at the opening of the Mary J. Blige Center for Women in Yonkers, NY. The center aims to educate, empower and encourage women. Gucci is also opening up a pop-up store in SoHo to showcase the Gucci-icon collection, complete with sold out DJ Mark Ronson sneakers.

A growing number of consumer fashion brands are creating mobile applications that promote the ease and social benefits of personal shopping. This is part of the latest efforts by fashion brands to bring consumers personalized shopping experiences onto mobile devices and social networking platforms.

“Many Big Marketers Go on the Hunt for New Agencies” (WSJ)

A long list of major marketers are shopping for new advertising firms, a sign that the ad recession may be easing. Switching to a new ad agency can cost $50,000 to $100,000 (or more), a price tag most companies held off on during the economic downturn. But, one of the biggest things companies are looking for in a new ad agency are an effort to keep ad agency fees down.

Coca-cola is enlisting three brand ambassadors to visit all 206 countries where the company’s products are sold. Over 365 days and 150,000 miles, these brand ambassadors are supposed to seek out what makes people happy at each location and share their happiness and enthusiasm with the rest of the world. Their adventures will play out like a year-long reality TV series (sans television) on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Flickr and other social networking sites.

The other day I was scurrying through the city streets during my lunch hour when I found myself suddenly at a stand still. I was at the corner of Fifth and 57th when I become engrossed in the Diet Coke Pop Up Store. I’m a Coke lover but not a Diet Coke fan but that didn’t really matter since the pop up store was screaming “come in, hang out.” So I did. I ended up being away from the office a bit too long. Opps! Best part about it, I left with goodies like my photo and jazzed up Diet Coke bottles.
