While pop-up shops are all the rage all in Manhattan, Fashion designer Kai D moved against the grain, taking his pop-up at 75 Orchard Street to a more permanent deal. He signed a 13 month lease for a spot in one of the most popular blocks in the Lower East Side. Kai D used the pop-up to feel out the neighborhood and gain clientele before moving toward his goal to become a staple in the neighborhood.

A Fashion Institute of Technology grad, Kai D worked for big name designers like Liz Claiborne, Structure, and Nautica, before creating his own collection. He describes his work as having an “American sensibility, industrial and work wear inspired, but with a modern twist, perfect for creative professionals.” While the line appeals to a variety of people, most of his clients are creative types, photographers, painters, travel writers, and interior designers, but more importantly people who appreciate quality and attention to detail.

Besides the 75 Orchard Street location, Kai D can be found at Neiman Marcus and will soon be available at Camoflage in Chelsea, along with a dozen other stores around the country. While the brand is growing, Kai D wants to maintain his integrity and quality with his small boutique style. But already with a global mindset, Kai D is flying to Taiwan this week to meet with the country’s Editor and Chief of GQ, hoping to grow to other Asian and European nations.

“I don’t want to grow too fast,” Kai D said. “Looking at other designers, we are on the right track, taking small steps.” With a busy holiday season ahead, the shop plans to celebrate the recent lease signing with a fashion event and party. Stay tuned for more details, and visit the Kai D website to see his unique designs.

Yesterday Obama criticised the ‘Great Firewall of China’ that prevents the country

Yesterday Obama criticised the ‘Great Firewall of China’ that prevents the country’s web-users from viewing ‘inappropriate content’. Quite right Mr. President – can you imagine what the British press would be like if such a policy of censorship were applied? Gordon Brown would be our national hero, Katie Price wouldn’t feature at all…hmm, maybe there would be some benefits. Still, without internet freedom, we wouldn’t be able to show you the most interesting and wacky design stories. Now that would be tragic…

mydeco’s pick of the top three news stories:

As Kirstie Allsopp informed us in the first instalment of her mydeco blog, ceramics are due for a revival. It could come at no better time, as some of Britain’s oldest potteries in Stoke-on-Trent have been forced to close in the face of competition from abroad. Luckily, several of Britain’s young designers are helping to save this traditional craft with contemporary crockery patterns that couldn’t be further from your granny’s china. Follow the link to see more examples.

2. Wallpaper: Pick of the pop-ups

I should explain that a ‘pop-up’ refers to a temporary cafe, hotel, boutique or restaurant which draws in customers with unusual location or design choices, along with the inevitable charm of transience. The latest venture to jump on the fleeting bandwagon is London’s lavish members club House Home, with a pop-up ’snug’ in its private courtyard gardens. A positive improvement on the usual patio heater and plastic chair combination in smoking areas, ‘Le Fumoir’ is designed in the style of a 19th century smoking lounge, complete with leather armchairs and antique wall hangings. The snug is only around until Spring, so unless you have the ability to scale walls, I would advise becoming a House Home member to enjoy the benefits.

As reported in the daily news blog last week, the final selection of fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent’s personal belongings are to be auctioned at Christies today. The first event, which auctioned off Laurent’s various artistic masterpieces raised €342.5 million, so the selected furniture and knick-knacks on sale tomorrow will be bargains by comparison. If you fancy picking up something like the very understated table pictured above, why not do your bit for charity and head down to Christies? (The auction is in France by the way – you might want to factor this into your expenses.)

Michelin-starred restaurant Sketch and Arts & Business Principal Member GSK are coming together in a meeting of minds with a pop-up patisserie and cafe inside the Royal Academy from the start of December, coinciding with the opening of GSK’s second annual Contemporary season.

GSK Contemporary: Art of a Changing World will feature international contemporary artists, both established and up and coming using a multiplicity of media including exhibitions, film screenings and talks concerning environment and the modern world. It mixes the political, the environmental and the cultural, creating a series of works set to inspire debate. In its first year East London’s Bistrotheque set up their pop-up restaurant in tune with the exhibition called Flash made from art storage boxes.

Sketch will also be following the ethos of GSK Contemporary by using seasonal ingredients produced solely in Britain and using recyclable materials such as recycled heavy duty cardboard for furniture. Despite the eco-friendly credentials expect this pop-up cafe to be the height of glamour and design. The Sketch restaurants themselves went over a multi-million pound makeover at the turn of the century, and have strong links to art and music. They hold exhibitions in their own gallery, the last being of Noam Gonick and his works on Queer culture and human rights abuses in August. Exhibitions change every six weeks and they engage with new media with the use of projectors in their space. Furthermore, the space will have input from Sketch’s Artistic Director Mark Lawson Bell who has also worked with Absolut Vodka, Hendrick’s Gin and Body Shop.

Of course with the gorgeous surroundings there will be sublime food. Imagine oyster bars and creperies, along with Michelin standard afternoon tea and lunch. The outside section – where you can order takeaways – should be comfortable with the cafe providing hot water bottles and blankets.

With this event we see the finest, most chic food mixing with innovative, radical art that pushes the boundaries. The pop-up restaurant opens on December 3rd and will be keeping the public enchanted and well fed for three months.

What could be better than a shop filled with designer shoes, chocolate, and Bailey’s Irish Cream? I’m stumped. Bailey’s is sponsoring a pop-up shop in Soho with heels and boots by designers like Sergio Rossi, Farylrobin, and Barbara Bui for only $75. The proceeds benefit the nonprofit Clothes Off Your Back, which hosts charity auctions showcasing celebrity attire.

The store is filled with smooth suede couches and red-ribboned bottles of Bailey’s as decor. Open 11am-7pm through tomorrow, the pop-up is located at 421 West Broadway, and is an excellent way to get discount designer shoes while helping out a good cause.

On October 24th, Mapos wrapped up a months long project with joy, sweat, and world record times. Wel

On October 24th, Mapos wrapped up a months long project with joy, sweat, and world record times. Well, at least joy and sweat!

A large athletic company based in Oregon (the name escapes me), hired Mapos to develop programming, event management, recruitment strategies, graphic design, and exhibit design for a one-day running event dubbed “the Human Race”. Using GPS and online technologies, this 10k race was run on every corner of the world by over 100,000 people. To highlight the day, a handful of hub cities hosted planned group races. Here in New York, the flagship venue for the race (and arguably the entire human race!), over 5000 people joined up early Saturday morning for an organized race in Prospect Park.

As a lead up to the race Mapos designed a series of kiosks scattered around popular running routes around the city. These served as recruitment stations that advertised the race and encouraged online registration. They incorporated Mapos-designed graphics and scavenger-hunt-like give-aways. A couple of the kiosks were actually Smart Cars (covered in Mapos graphics), roving the city on set itineraries. If runners visited every kiosks – and tracked down the Smart Cars via Twitter – they could enter a grand prize sweepstakes.

For Race Day, Mapos designed a fun and inspiring “village” in the middle of Prospect Park. After the race, runners and VIPs could relax in a global lounge, get a massage, food and drink, learn about the newest running gear, get consults from running pros, and rock out to the musical duo Matt + Kim (check ‘em out, really. Mapos is now their number one fan). The highlight was a 20 foot long custom-designed Community Table where runners could check their times, download their favorite running tunes, upload pictures and learn more about Ni.. er… the aforementioned athletic company from Oregon.

Event design. Pop-up construction. Graphic Design. Project Management. Brand Centric Experience. Free massages. 10k record times!

I must say that I have always loved pop-up books; they’re pretty damn clever — and are a category or genre of their own. Recently my interest have been rekindled by reading pop-up children’s books at my kids’ bedtimes. Sadly, my little boy is in the middle of the terrible twos and so likes to destroy anything that has flaps or pop-ups. Oh well.

Maybe when they’re older, and can appreciate the art of the pop-up, I will be able to get them something fabulous — possibly something like the works of Marion Bataille — check out www.abc3dbook.com/.

The abc3d book is just wonderful, despite it’s simplicity, it remains creative and ingenious.
