1896: Se considera como el nacimiento del cómic con la aparición de la primera tira cómica, The Yellow Kid creada por Richard Fenton Outcalt que además introdujo los “globitos” como recurso para que sus personajes se expresaran.

1929: Surge el primer intento de comercialización del cómic con Funnies No. 1, sin nada de éxito.

1930: Las tiras cómicas ganan popularidad, con personajes como Anita la Huerfanita, Popeye, Dick Tracy, antecesor indirecto del Cómic Negro y creado por Chester Gould, Flash Gordon de Alex Raymond y el más exitoso de todos, Tarzán, creación de Edgar Rice Burroughs.

  1931: Aparece por primera vez Superman en el fanzine Science Fiction: The Vanguard of Future Civilization #3, creación del escritor Jerry Siegel y el dibujante Joe Shuster. La idea les pareció buena pero no tuvieron éxito cuando trataron de comercializarla ya que las editoriales pensaban que un personaje tan poderoso no podría tener éxito.

1933: Famous Funnies es considerado el primer cómic. Fue una re-impresión de varias tiras cómicas, en formato de comic book.

1936: Se crea el primer superhéroe tal y como los conocemos, aunque irónicamente no tiene ningún poder sobrenatural. The Phantom dibujada por el artista Lee Falk, aparece como tira cómica en los diarios norteamericanos y cuenta la historia de un hombre que utiliza un disfraz púrpura y un antifaz para proteger su identidad y así poder combatir el crimen. Porta dos pistolas calibre .45 y monta un corcel blanco.

1937: Se lanza Detective Comics No 1, posteriormente la compañía toma las iniciales para crear DC Comics, una de las casas editoriales más importantes actualmente.

1938: El cómic comienza a tomar cada vez más importancia, pero es hasta que Joe Shuster y Jerry Siegel presentan en Action Comics #1 (junio de 1938) a Superman que nace la Época de Oro.

1939: El segundo superhéroe en cobrar importancia es Batman, creado por Bob Kane y presentado en mayo de 1939 en Detective Comics #27. Aparecen por primera vez juntos dos de los superhéroes más importantes de todos los tiempos, Batman y Superman, en la portada de New York Worlds Fair Comics #1, aunque nunca aparecieron en una misma historia hasta 1952. Se crea Timely Comics, que a la postre se convertiría en Marvel Comics, con el lanzamiento de La Antorcha Humana (no confundir con Johnny Storm) y Prince Namor: El Sub-Marinero.

1940: Para esta década el personaje más popular es Capitán Marvel (Shazam) cuya primera aparición se dio en Whiz Comics (Número 1 en portada y 2 en interiores), publicado por Fawcett Publications. Posteriormente DC obtiene los derechos y crea la revista Shazam! cuyo primer número corresponde a febrero de 1973.

1941: Se lanza el primer cómic con contenido bélico, haciendo aparición el superhéroe más patriótico de todos los tiempos, Capitán América, en Captain America #1 creación de Jack Kirby y Joe Simon. Otra inclusión importante es la de Wonder Woman de William Moulton Marston (creador del detector de mentiras).

1952: Aparece en Superman #76 la primera historia de Superman y Batman juntos escrita por Edmond Hamilton y dibujado por Curt Swan.

1954: El New York Worlds Fair Comics cambia su nombre a Worlds Finest Comics. En el #71 de dicha serie Superman y Batman aparecen en la portada y se incluye una historia de los superhéroes juntos. A partir de entonces la revista se dedica a publicar exclusivamente historias protagonizadas por Superman y Batman, y desde ese momento el dúo se conoce extraoficialmente como World´s Finest (Los Mejores del Mundo) y aparecen varios crossovers en sus respectivas publicaciones.

La década de los cincuentas fue difícil para el Noveno Arte, ya que la censura Mcarthista afectó a todos los géneros del cómic y, con la conjunción de diferentes circunstancias termina una de las mejores etapas del Arte Gráfico Secuencial. La Época de Oro termina, lamentablemente, con la publicación del libro Seduction of the Innocent del psiquiatra austriaco Frederick Wertham donde planteaba la teoría ultraconservadora anti-cómic de que éstos inducían a los jóvenes a cometer actos delictivos y atentaban contra la moral.

En consecuencia directa se crea el Comics Code Authority, un código para regir los contenidos de los comics donde queda estrictamente prohibido la aparición de temas sexuales, políticos o de violencia (de manera ilustrada o escrita) además también prohibía que personajes terroríficos aparecieran como protagonistas de comics. Por si no fuera poco, se crea The Comics Magazine Association of America, que regularizó los temas de varias revistas de terror, prohibiendo la aparición de sangre, tortura, vampiros, hombres lobo, lujuria, necrofagia, necrofilia, canibalismo, zombis y las palabras horror y terror.

1956: Durante los años subsecuentes a la creación del CCA, varias casas editoriales fracasan, desaparecen personajes importantes y las ventas bajan considerablemente. Es hasta que aparece Barry Allen, mejor conocido como Flash, que la industria da un nuevo respiro y nace oficialmente la Época de Plata del cómic. Otro acontecimiento importante es el lanzamiento de Fantastic Four el cual dio inicio a la denominada Era Marvel del Cómic. Marvel lanza personajes tan importantes como Spider-Man, X-Men y Daredevil entre otros.

Actualmente el Noveno Arte es uno de los movimientos más importantes, con gran número de personajes, corrientes, temas y autores renombrados. La industria del cómic ha evolucionado con el tiempo, convirtiéndose en uno de las formas de contar historias más populares, dedicando convenciones a nivel mundial, programas de radio, revistas especializadas, tiendas exclusivas y un largo etcétera.

Another type of chicken fast food restaurant similarly to the KFC Fast Food restaurant. It has few different sets to be chosen from the menu. At my first visit, I didn’t know much about its menu so I followed my colleague to order the RM9.90 set.

It has 2 pieces of chicken (of course I will request for a breast meat, ehehe easy to eat without bones), a coleslaw, a mashed potato with shredded chicken with sauce, a bun and a soft drink of your choice.

I would like to say the mashed potato is very different than the KFC one. It tastes better than a plain mashed potato with sauce. The bun is not the normal bread. It is something like a scone type of bun.

This fast food restaurant can be found at Mid Valley lower ground. It’s just next to the Domino Pizza. I’m not sure if it’s also available at other places.

i am on the hunt for a spaghetti sandwich recipe! which seems sort’ve redundant, because the whole thing is just bread-pasta-bread, so i guess what i’m really on the hunt for is a delicious sauce & meatball recipe. and a tough hunk of good bread. and some big sail-sized slices of whatever kind of cheese is good on spaghetti. i have not been this excited about dinner in awhile. it’s friday and i feel like i need to hit the ground running once i leave the shop. there are checks to be cashed, bills to be paid, groceries/”necessities” (ie: things i apparently need to survive but never remember to buy now that i’m living alone) to be bought, photoshoots to be contemplated on, cars & apartments to be cleaned, all before my magical spaghetti sandwich dinner date. i’m sure there’s more, on top of the fact i work both days this weekend. booso, i’m trying to find whatever good i can in my(/our) current situation, so in the spirit of having our own apartments, i snuck over to his place this morning and taped a moderately risque photograph of myself to his door. haha! i hope our landlord sees it. ;-* i also hope he doesn’t end up taking a bunch of his friends home after work. i should think these things out better.watched the always sunny christmas special last night, and it only further intensitified my crush on charlie. we could huff glue all day long.

a girl on a bike got all thrown off balance and almost fell off her bike, but instead just dropped her flashlight or headlamp whatever it was, and I thought about all the mornings that things like that happen. I don’t know why it always becomes this big story in my head about how the day ahead is going to be difficult because some small little glitch happened like spilling coffee or tripping over the rug or something really miniscule. It really is all about perspective and keeping it in check. That is my goal this week, “keep it in perspective”.

So this morning I had some oatmeal and I put nutmeg in it (not my favorite). I ended up only eating half the nutmeg just added some not great flavor. Of course I had some coffee with milk. I honestly believe that drinking coffee has increased my metabolism (however slight). I am going to admit that about four months ago I bought a new toy the BodyBugg. This has only increased my obsessiveness with things like calories in vs. calories out. You would think I would be really thin, but alas I am not. Anyway it is a great tool, it has not helped me loss any weight, but it has kept things in perspective, which as I mentioned above is important to me. I can totally see how this would be a great catalyst for someone who really isn’t aware of the amount of calories they are eating or exercising. I had a pretty good idea before and thought maybe I was missing something. Turns out what I am missing is that I really haven’t been that committed to changing my diet. Not sure what the big problem is, but I just don’t like having to measure things out etc. Anyway if I would encouraged someone to get one if it interests you. I have really enjoyed just seeing how many calories I am actually burning and not having to guess if what the machine or magazine etc tells me I am burning. Guess that is my blurb about the bodybugg. If anyone has any question about it let me know. I’d be happy to answer any.

Off to go for a run. Then later need to get to the office to print off some MLS sheets for a showing tomorrow and I need to update my mailing list. updated HER a little bit–some new links and fresh stuff in the PEOPLE and K9 galleries. this shit weather and early winter darkness is making it nearly impossible for me to function like a human being, and makes the idea of shooting photos seem like the last thing anyone would want to do when you could just crawl in bed and wait for summer instead. i even gutted my bedroom to “make some space” (not a lot!) to shoot in if the mood ever strikes me. (which it’s not, by the way) now that it’s just me in the apartment, i feel like it’s ok to have every single piece of furniture i own crammed into one room.i’ve been watching a lot of documentaries lately, sort’ve to prepare myself for the vastly unentertaining wasteland of television programming i will have to survive once sons of anarchy goes off the air. i watched born into brothels, which was the most depressing piece of film i’ve ever had to watch. but it did help fuel my arguement that artists are mostly complete bullshit because ANYONE can make beautiful shit. and i just finished downloading searching for the wrong eyed jesus, brother’s keeper, (both as suggested by molly) and holy ghost people. i would LOVE more suggestions for any documentaries about the rural south, appalachia/”mountian folk”, serpent handlers, etc etc..absolutely in love with that photo. i’ve got the best boys in my life.i have been watching this flashy little boxer for a couple of days now (the idea of adopting her for myself is totally botched–she is NOT an apartment dog at all. and having her around really solidified my loyalty to boston terriers, frenchies and other SMALL smashface dogs.) and you can really see how impressed popeye is with the whole situation. as if it’s not bad enough he gets shuffled around from one apartment to another, now he has to deal with this. poor little man.

Met with Yuki-To, Zenical and the peeps from Zotaku to welcome Optic from Australia who will be visiting Singapore in a span of a week with the main reason being AFA’ 09.

We met up for dinner and a lil chat before getting off to the arrival hall for the main event @_@!

Tandis que les pommes deviennent cancérigènes, que les réfrigérateurs contribuent au réchauffement de la planète et que les arbres transmettent le SIDA (maudits soyez-vous, dendrophiles!), nous devons incessamment être à l’affut des plus récentes découvertes scientifiques et médicales afin de préserver notre santé et d’éviter une mort atroce et purulente. Parmi les différentes causes du malheur collectif, il en est une qui est désormais bien connue: le tabagisme. Ses effets néfastes sont prouvés, la loi le condamne et les notions de base du respect voudraient que l’on évite de le propager mais ce fléau persiste tout de même.

Cette hostile constatation, si soudainement manifestée, est directement liée à un événement qui a bouleversé ma vie en ce premier novembre 2009, un dimanche apparemment comme les autres, alors que mon seul désir était de bénéficier d’un suprême spectacle du groupe légendaire qu’est Metallica. Le Colisée Pepsi étant propice à une telle activité, je profitais d’un siège au confort discutable mais à la situation géographique tout-à-fait adéquate et il me tardait de hurler avec joie les paroles des chansons culte qui allaient se succéder au courant de la soirée. Tout était parfait jusqu’à ce que je sois forcé de constater que les deux individus situés justement devant moi consumaient les cigarettes aussi sûrement qu’une chaîne de montage performante aurait pu leur propulser en pleine visage. Non seulement mon gaminet de Mercyful Fate était-il voué à s’imprégner de l’odeur du pestilentiel tabac mais ce sont mes yeux et ma gorge qui allaient subir les assauts répétés de la fumée sous les yeux ébahis d’un agent de sécurité inapte et de l’affiche d’interdiction de fumer. Comment espérer raisonner avec un homme portant un chandail orné d’un aigle et d’une moto « chopper »? À coups de marteau Dead On, sans doute, mais les lieux n’étaient pas propices à une telle discussion.

Bien que je démontre ici beaucoup de hargne, il faut tout de même savoir que je ne suis pas le bourreau des fumeurs et que j’estime que chaque individu a le droit de nuire à sa santé comme il lui plait. En ce qui me concerne, je préfère la nourriture malsaine et l’alcool mais je crois qu’il est tout-à-fait légitime de préférer souiller ses poumons. Le problème réside plutôt dans les habitudes de consommation de ces malotrus et de leur intervention directement nocive dans mon mode de vie. Lorsque des adeptes de la cigarette décident d’allumer l’outil de leur vice en public, ils nuisent non seulement à mon bien-être mais aussi à ma santé, sans oublier mes vêtements et mon humeur. C’est un peu comme si je buvais de la bière de piètre qualité et que je la régurgitais immédiatement au visage de mes voisins en quantité quatre fois plus grande que ce que j’ai moi-même assimilé tout en m’assurant d’affecter les systèmes digestifs et respiratoires de mes convives, le tout dans l’illégalité et en m’assurant de ne prendre aucune pause pendant les 5 heures que dure l’événement auquel je participe. Voilà qui serait fort désagréable.

Tandis que les consommateurs des produits du tabac s’insurgent et s’estiment brimés, même les Cigarettes Popeye se sont dissociées du mouvement en se rebaptisant Bâtonnets de Bonbon. N’est-ce pas un signe suffisant? Comme dans toutes les situations où des individus sont brimés tels que ceux qui veulent acheter de la bière à 23h19, les différents toxicomanes, les prostituées et les exhibitionnistes, tous veulent pouvoir profiter de leur hobby sans prendre en considération l’impact qu’ils peuvent avoir sur leur environnement. Le manque de respect inhérent à la société nord-américaine contemporaine est, je crois directement liée à cette incapacité qu’ont les gens à prendre en considération le bien-être d’autrui et en ne tenant compte que de l’impact qu’a leur geste sur leur propre personne. Je profite certes de cette tranche de vie afin de déverser impunément mon fiel sur ce tabac que j’exècre depuis si longtemps mais ce n’est tout de même qu’un exemple commun qui me permet de bien illustrer une problématique beaucoup plus large.

Dans un monde qui tend à prôner l’ouverture d’esprit, à encourager la différence et à favoriser la tolérance globale, on constate des manques de respect de plus en plus flagrants sous le couvert de l’individualité, de l’ignorance ou du droit acquis, les fautifs allant même souvent jusqu’à plaider leur droit à la liberté juste avant de brimer celle des autres. J’encourage fortement la populace à omettre de ramasser les excréments du chien, à consommer des stupéfiants, à chanter « Bobépine » au karaoké du Bistrot du Fjord ou même à se masturber dans les souliers de la voisine en écoutant des chants de baleines si c’est ce qui lui fait plaisir mais il est toujours crucial de savoir se mettre dans les chaussures (HA HA!) des gens qui nous entourent avant de s’adonner à de tels actes proscrits car les répercussions peuvent être dévastatrices. Vraiment.

A rough night for Popeye

Too bad former Raptor big man Popeye Jones isn’t as good at resisting arrest as he was at hitting the boards. The former rebounding machine was pulled over for DUI in Texas late Sunday and apparently bashed his own face into the pavement while trying to shake the cops, which they decided was punishment enough. They dropped the resisting charge, though Jones was still slapped for driving drunk. Fair, I’d say.

Jones, who played for the Raps for two seasons in the late-nineties and is widely accepted as having the biggest ears of anyone to ever play the game, is currently serving as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks.
