What’s the best thing for short-term missions leaders to do after four days of training, planning, and meetings?

Go on a mission trip, of course!

Twenty-five Global Challenge leaders from Europe and the Mediterranean region plunged into the middle of what has been called the largest daily open-air market in Europe to share Christ with Italians, and immigrants from the Balkans, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Porta Palazzo’s market fills nearly a square kilometer of piazzas and side streets with furniture, clothes, fish, vegetables, flowers, home appliances, shoes, cheese, jewelry, pirated movies… and most importantly, thousands of immigrants.

The team set up a market tent each day with several tables filled with Bibles, booklets, DVDs addressing faith in Christ, as well as boxes of winter clothes. Hundreds of internationals and Italians received Bibles and a chance to hear about the Good News of Christ personally from a team member.

Jill McAfee, a worship leader from the USA described, “Some people from our team would stay at the tent and talk to people who came by.  Others went out to talk to people.  One group came with me to different locations where we just sang and worshipped.  It was very cool.”

“I enjoyed watching people on our team, who normally wouldn’t be able to share freely, having the chance to share openly about Jesus.  It was beautiful. The atmosphere was different…freer even.” McAfee explained.

The outreaches were organized by OM-Italy and local churches and the team was joined by META (an Italian evangelism organization) and members from several evangelical churches in Turin.

Language barriers can be a problem at times on short-term trips, but this team came prepared with skills in French, Arabic, Italian and several other languages.

Tim Barlett, a Global Challenge leader in the Balkans, said, “One of the greatest thing was to have so many varieties of languages ready and available to talk with the people who visited the booth.”

For six days, the market is set up for normal trade and it closes down Sunday. However, the sidewalk fills with a different kind of market for Sunday as Arabic music fills the air and various items are displayed on sheets of cloth or cardboard.

The Sunday vendors, mostly men, visited the outreach tent and openly discussed the claims of Christ with the team members.

One employee from a Turin museum argued by declaring aloud to the team, “Convince me! Convince me!” Team member and Italian Field Leader Eliseo Guadagno recalls “I just kept coming back to the Cross and to his personal need for forgiveness in Christ.”

Not long after this discussion, one Italian man asked Guadagno, “Who won?” Short-term missions leaders would say that, after the tent was packed and the few Bibles and booklets remaining were boxed and loaded into the van: “Christ, and His Kingdom won.”

Below is a report from someone who is serving in the Middle East living the Christian life among friends and serving the culture in Arabic. To hear her tell the story in person was moving!

AM I IN ITALY OR NORTH AFRICA? – Italy
One OMer recalls her experience reaching out to people in a crowded Italian market:

Please pray that OM Italy is able to reach Italians and immigrants with God’s love. Pray that those who received the literature would read it and desire to learn more about Jesus.

Who wouldn’t agree that we need to pray… a lot… when we are faced with the insurmountable. But, “we need to pray” can become a phrase we say to segue to “the real work” of evangelism, servant-hood, social help, etc. Or it can at time sound tired, and almost empty, as if it’s the best we can do since the situation is, after all, insurmountable!

OM-Italy is convinced that the real work of ministry alongside churches, of servant-hood, of redemptive social help, and especially of declaring the Great News about Jesus, begins and ends with prayer.

“Our goal is to pray in preparation for ministry and outreach, pray throughout the campaign, and pray for the results after we pack up the tent, fold up the boxes, or put away the face-paint. We want to surround the ministry of the Gospel with prayer,” said Rick Harrell, discipleship leader for OM-Italy.

A recent cool Monday night, Rick and members of the OM-Italy team drove into the center of Turin to the Piazza della Repubblica to pray. In two weeks a team from all over Europe will join a dozen evangelical churches in an outreach campaign in the center of this busy piazza.

The area, locally called Porta Palazzo, is filled with high rise buildings of flats that surround the piazza and line nearby streets and alleys. The dense population is split among Chinese Buddhists, Moslem’s from various countries of Northern Africa, and a modest mix of various other nationalities, including Italians. Christ’s name is heard infrequently on the streets of Porta Palazzo.

This night, however, the name of Jesus was heard, praised, and lifted up as the team moved from one corner to the next worshiping and interceding for the city, the churches, and the outreach campaign.

The format was simple with just a few words, or tags, to guide the prayer time.

Praise, to remember that God is Lord of this City. He is worthy of worship even in places other gods are honored. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and highest praise is due Him.

People, to remember that there are people groups, or “ethnos” clusters, that live here and need Christ. And more specifically, there are families, students, marriages, seniors, children, singles, widows, businessmen and women, all on the edge of eternity – and Christ left heaven to rescue them.

Pictures, to remember that God speaks to us and reminds us visually of what He has done, how He works, and what He delights in and longs for in this city. An image or metaphor brought to mind can be a catalyst for faith and prayer when we intercede (the Bible is full of these pictures, by the way.)

Promises, to recall that He has assured us that He will move on behalf of His children, and that He is active working in hearts and lives, even in the inner city of Torino.

Powers and principalities, to remind us that the enemy has designs and influential activity in the center city, that we need God’s Spiritual Armor to advance His kingdom, and that we can take the city for Christ.

The Italian word, inondazione, describes the growing prayer strategy of OM-Italy. “We want to flood the city with prayer before, during, and after the outreaches. Already, we see a coalition of churches who are reaching into Porta Palazzo multiple times this year. We want to see the churches and pastors join us in the streets and piazzas as we all intercede for the city”

OM-Italy invites you to join them in praying for Italy, for Turin, for Porta Palazzo, and for the outreaches planned on November 11 through 13.

Sperando  che non si tratti solo di fuffa(s).   E però io comunque al Pala il nome glielo cambierei.
Anche perché mi piace pensare che tutto il resto conta assai più dell’archistar in questione, il cui cavatappi — leggo qui — “completato nel 2004 …  finora ha solo ospitato eventi e mostre itineranti ma resta per gran parte dell’anno vuoto e distante dai fervori del resto della piazza”.

In my last post ‘Unhappy to be italian’ I stated the problem number 2 in our country is the mistrust in the judicial system. I said “only the good citizens are afraid of the police“. In the following post I’ll report some news appeared on a newspaper that let us taste the disproportion among the so-called crime news and the reality of things.

In the Turin section of Il Giornale, also called il Giornale del Piemonte, dated 8 may 2009, this “shocking” news is reported: the local police confiscated 519 lighters out of safety device. The frisked shop was located in the Porta Palazzo quarter (one of the two most immigration impacted areas of Turin, A/N) and its owner, a 24 years old chinese girl with regular residence permit, was denounced.

On the same page the main title is: ‘Anti G8 people: «Ready to break the red zone»’. What are we talking about? Genoa? London? Abruzzo? No. Still Turin.
On May the 19th is scheduled a manifestation led by ‘the Onda Anomala students’ against the G8 University Summit that will be held in the Castle of Valentino, the present headquarters of the Architecture Faculty of the University of Turin. Those demonstrators want to express their protest against the Minister of Education MariaStella Gelmini and all the chancellors present. The city prefect disposed a ‘Red Zone’, as in the case of 2001 Genoa summit, in which the access is limited by the police, that is to keep a good security level. But the “students” don’t agree. They issued a note in which they claim that this plan demonstrate “the will of the academic and municipal institutions to create a nervousness mood“.
Question: if a good citizen is told not to go in a certain place, why the good citizen has to break the rule to go in that certain place? Answers:

1. because the right to protest should be supported everywhere;
2. because he wants to create chaos, burning cars and breaking shop windows;
3. because someone else told him to do so.

All the answers are correct. The first for a matter of freedom. The second because if the students would like to do just a manifestation, they can do it outside the off limits areas anyway. And the third because it’s reported that many political parties, labor unions, unemployed institutions and social centers are planning to fill up with protesters special trains from all Italy’s corner to go making riots in Turin.

After Genoa was laid waste by demonstrators, judges condemned only 25 people for property damage and looting. Of the 329 arrested for criminal conspiracy to commit destruction no one was charged since the judge declared the charges invalid. Of the hundreds of policemen charged of abuse of authority none will go to jail.

So, where is our judicial system? Where are the guilties? In Italy we are all under investigation but no one is ever guilty. There are no guilties for the slaughters, for the building collapses after the earthquakes, for the school ceilings that come down, for the acts of vandalism, for the railway disasters (like the Crevalcore crash of January 2005 in which 17 died and all 10 accused are absolved).
But if you are a regular immigrant who sells lighters without safety device then the events succeed differently.

Isn’t that enough? Maybe you don’t know the story of Gabriele Lodigiani an unemployed of Crema who stole 20 euro cents from a church offer box because he was hungry. The fact happened in august of 2007, now the judge condemned him to return the coin, to pay a 70 euros fine and to spend two months in jail.
Why this disproportion? In a country in which elderly people get condemned because they steal apples in the supermarkets but members of the Mafia are released from prison because of bureaucratic quibbles, what could Cesare Beccaria say?

“[...] the certainty of a punishment, even if it be moderate, will always make a stronger impression than the fear of another which is more terrible but combined with the hope of impunity” (“On Crimes and Punishments” pg. 58).

Quello che segue è un nuovo “intervento ospite“. Sono proprio felice oggi perchè ospito una persona che si è laureata con me. Ho avuto molti laureati con ottime ricerche ed è sempre stata una cosa da cui ho avuto soddisfazione.

Marilena Valeri, laureata recentemente, ha fatto una bellissima tesi sulle piazze e sugli spazi pubblici, comparando la trasformazione delle aree urbane di alcune città italiane. In particolare, partendo dalle esperienze di Roma e Torino, Marilena Valeri ha presentato il caso di Piazza Risorgimento a Pordenone. Ne è uscita un’ottima ricerca e quindi ho chiesto a Marilena di farne una estrema sintesi che potesse divenire un post, che, per brevità, non rispecchia la ricchezza della sua tesi ma che sono sicuro contribuisce ad approfondire in modo interessante i temi che Metapolis vuole portare avanti.

La Piazza tra centro e periferia.

Dentro la città, centrali o quasi prossimi al suo centro, eppure marginali rispetto a quest’ultimo e alle sue dinamiche, esistono aree e quartieri cosiddetti di periferia, in senso non solo geografico, ma anche sociale e umano. Sono luoghi fragili che divengono a loro volta centro per altre periferie. Vengono contrassegnati da molti vuoti, una sorta di “discarica” di individui, attraversati da flussi e contrassegnati da questioni che sono di natura globale e locale contemporaneamente.

Due quartieri, con due piazze famose a livello nazionale, sono Barriera di Milano a Torino, con Porta Palazzo, e l’Esquilino di Roma, con piazza Vittorio Emanuele, che, a prima vista, possono apparire aree omogenee. Nella realtà sono caratterizzate diversamente per storia, popolazioni, culture, condizioni di vita; sono zone in cui si concentrano e si intrecciano problemi sociali vecchi e nuovi. Tra periferie tradizionali e quartieri storici c’è una convergenza caratterizzata dall’eterogeneizzazione della popolazione e dall’illeggibilità del territorio. La caduta dei tradizionali fattori d’integrazione, l’innesto di nuovi elementi funzionali e l’ingresso degli stranieri, fanno esplodere l’eterogeneità. Ciò spinge tali aree verso spirali di degrado simili a quelle registrate un tempo nelle periferie. Nell’insieme, eterogeneizzazione e illeggibilità portano a una perdita di specificità e di memoria dei contesti locali e alla loro trasformazione in un luogo comune, un non-luogo, un’equivalenza indefinitamente moltiplicata delle direzioni e delle circolazioni. Molte aree sembrano ridotte a mero effetto di aggregazione, come gli spazi pubblici.

Ma chi sono oggi gli abitanti delle nostre realtà urbane, e nello specifico dei loro spazi pubblici?  Si è sviluppata una città della dell’esclusione negli stessi luoghi che tradizionalmente dovrebbero essere gli spazi dell’incontro e della pluralità. Un tempo i nemici erano coloro che stavano al di là della linea di demarcazione. Oggi il legame tra civiltà e barbarie si è invertito, come affermano sia B. Diken che C. Laustsen: la vita di città è accompagnata da una paura onnipresente.

In questa nuova forma degli spazi urbani di esclusione, la questione degli immigrati presenta degli aspetti che legano atteggiamenti culturali e dinamiche spaziali. Lo spazio destinato allo straniero viene usato, ma non realmente vissuto. Gli immigrati vivono con poca aderenza il territorio, occupando aree economicamente fuori mercato o gratuite (come le zone pubbliche), con scarso potere contrattuale e d’interlocuzione nei confronti delle Amministrazioni locali. Ci sono un ghetto volontario e un altro involontario. Manuel Castells definisce questi due mondi la “platea” e la “galleria”. 

Ci sono allora due modi di vita, segregati e reciprocamente separati. Per Z. Bauman  quelli che vivono nel primo sono <nel luogo>, ma non <di quel luogo>. Gli altri, quelli “della galleria”, non appartengono al comune di residenza. Lo spazio pubblico è così diventato la prima vittima collaterale di una città che sta perdendo la lotta affrontata per resistere all’avanzata della globalizzazione, o almeno per rallentarla. La stessa piazza urbana può essere la sede del mercato al mattino e un puro nodo di traffico nel pomeriggio. La mia ricerca, sfociata in una tesi, si occupa di piazza Vittorio a Roma, Porta Palazzo a Torino e piazza Risorgimento a Pordenone, tre aree che stanno evolvendo. La piazza, però ha molte facce. Come si è verificato a Pordenone, può diventare sia un nodo d’incontro per gruppi di stranieri, che una copertura per attività illecite. A Pordenone, come a Roma e Torino, realtà profondamente diverse tra loro non soltanto per dimensione, tutti sono d’accordo nel guardare allo spazio pubblico come a un contesto ricco di notevoli opportunità. Le narrazioni chiedono la presenza d’intermediari (per esempio le forze dell’ordine, ma anche figure diverse, di supporto culturale,) affinché intervengano per perseguire obiettivi come il ripristino di una situazione che ha perso ordine e stabilità, la traduzione di regole generali per suggerire comportamenti omogenei, il ricreare nuove possibilità relazionali nel faccia a faccia e nelle circostanze di anonimato, piuttosto diffuse negli spazi pubblici. Si ristabilirebbe in questo modo un contatto sociale pensato alla luce del civismo e dell’urbanità.

Le piazze restano in assoluto i luoghi più esposti alle presenze globali e all’intervento massmediatico, ma non sono valutate alla luce di criteri oggettivi. Al contrario, dal mio lavoro appaiono evidenti e pesanti le rielaborazioni soggettive. La gente spiega che non va in piazza (o nel parco pubblico) perché non possiede più una buona conoscenza del territorio, che continua a essere modificato e trasformato (vedi Roma e Torino). Inoltre non c’è più un’effettiva relazione tra i soggetti: mancando semplici e reali elementi di conoscenza, si guarda all’altro individuo valutando fattori esclusivamente esteriori, come il modo di vestire, il colore della pelle, gli atteggiamenti temuti. I continui arrivi e inserimenti di stranieri, dettati dai flussi migratori, “obbligano” le popolazioni autoctone a confrontarsi con grandi diversità (lingua, religione, razza, abitudini sociali). Ciò alimenta la formazione di pregiudizi. Non sono solo gli immigrati a essere percepiti come figure minacciose. La stessa sorte tocca ai nuovi poveri, un fenomeno in crescita per la perdita del posto di lavoro o del sostegno familiare; ai tossicodipendenti; ai portatori di disagio psichico e culturale. Non basta un’etichetta per rendere pubblico e condiviso uno spazio anziché un altro: sono i processi sociali che si realizzano all’interno di questa cornice a decretarne la bontà. Un’area pubblica non corrisponde mai totalmente al progetto di chi l’ha creata; rappresenta, di fatto, il risultato delle mutevoli relazioni vissute da chi la pratica e la gestisce. Il successo finale di un oggetto culturale, secondo la sintesi di Wendy Griswold, dipende dai suoi spettatori, dai suoi uditori, dal suo pubblico e dai suoi consumatori.

Ieri sera, guardando il telegiornale regionale del Piemonte, una delle notizie riguardava i tanti torinesi che alla fine del mercato, uno dei più grandi d’Europa, Porta Palazzo, si recano a raccogliere quanto avanzato nei pressi delle bancarelle. Una delle persone intervistate, che rilasciava una dichiarazione che fotografa quanto drammatica sia in questo momento la situazione, era Sr. Paola, un’amica che da sempre si batte per ridurre la povertà, e non sto parlando di quella spirituale. Nella sua dichiarazione, frutto di una lunghissima pratica in quanto da sempre a contatto con strati di povertà sempre più crescenti, ribadiva come questa operazione di raccolta di frutta e verdura rimaste alla fine di ogni mercato, sia  un espediente di persone che fino a pochi giorni fa mai e poi mai avrebbero immaginato di attraversare una situazione così drammatica: gente che lavora ma che non ha soldi sufficienti per fare la spesa. Questa affermazione  e le immagini che scorrevano mi hanno fortemente impressionato. Nella stessa giornata di ieri, ho composto qualche numero di telefono di ex colleghi e ho chiesto  loro come era la situazione stipendio, dopo aver attraversato tutto il mese di novembre in cassa integrazione; il primo mi risponde: “600 euro“.  Pensavo si fosse sbagliato, così, ho composto altri numeri di telefono e quasi tutti mi hanno dato la stessa risposta. Per avere una situazione più reale sono andato a vedere la busta paga da me percepita nel 2002, nello stesso mese  di riferimento. I miei colleghi non si erano sbagliati. Sr. Paola ha fotografato, nel vero senso della parola, (in quanto la sua comunità alloggio è proprio sopra Porta Palazzo), e “toccato con mano”, (in quanto quello è il suo lavoro), ed i miei ex colleghi mi hanno fornito una triste rappresentazione della realtà. Eppure la Costituzione Italiana, la migliore carta presente oggi, tanto che Spagna e Portogallo l’hanno presa da riferimento, a mio modo di vedere, tutela la dignità del lavoratore e a quest’ultimo deve essere data una retribuzione tale da assicurare per se e la propria famiglia il giusto sotentamento…. Oggi, provo a fare un giro per le vie di Torino ed osservare alcuni negozi: mi sono fatto una certa idea, alcuni pieni, altri vuoti. Può darsi che la tredicesima abbia “ammortizzato” un pochino la situazione, ma a fine gennaio, ritelefonerò ai miei ex colleghi e chiederò a Sr. Paola come sarà la situazione. Torno a casa e con me molti pensieri, tante domande poche risposte. La situazione attuale quanto è diversa dal quel giorno del 1954 in cui a Palermo si teneva un convegno per la piena occupazione? Oppure quanto è cambiata dal 1954 quando in Italia si parlava dello schema Vanoni? Ma come mai così tanta cassa integrazione e nello stesso tempo parrebbe che alcuni utili possano essere ripartiti? Nello stesso tempo noto che circa dieci milioni di italiani hanno trascorso le feste di Natale presso un ristorante e che questi ultimi hanno così dichiarato poche perdite. Una società fortemente polarizzata, la nostra, in maniera accentuta prima che iniziasse la crisi, quando qualcuno ci parlava di detassare gli straordinari ed altre meraviglie.  E pensare che,  come molti, ho sempre rifiutato gli straordinari, come atto di solidarietà: meglio assumere che gli straordinari….peccato che quando con altri compagni della Fiom dicevamo questo, altri rispondessero, “se non faccio straordinario io, lo farà qualcun altro, quindi, meglio quei soldi in tasca mia….” Era solo qualche anno fa, chissà cosa penserebbero ora quelle persone e se forse ora riflettono sul senso della solidarietà, e non dico della carità.

Nel blog BerlinRomExpress, con una bellissima foto della Porta di Brandeburgo illuminata, viene segnalato il Festival of Lights di Berlino, un appuntamento ormai classico durante il quale la capitale tedesca si veste di una luce davvero affascinante.

L’appuntamento, tuttora in corso, rientra in un recente filone di attrazione che pone la luce come forma d’arte che si integra con gli spazi delle città, rendendo i palazzi e i manufatti più famosi luoghi di attrazione multiformi e multidimensionali.

Le luci non solo colorano, ravvivano e danno nuovo dinamismo ai luoghi, ma cercano, come forma d’arte, anche di dare messaggi alle nostre città attraverso le città stesse.

Su questo filone segnalo anche l’iniziativa Luci d’Artista a Torino, la cui edizione del 2008 è consultabile sul sito del Comune di Torino, dove si trova anche la Mappa delle Luci per scoprire le varie installazioni. L’iniziativa, giunta ormai alla sua undicesima edizione, ha davvero un fascino particolare e tocca i luoghi più significativi della città con diverse installazioni.

Tra queste segnalo quella di Porta Palazzo, che credo sia uno dei luoghi più interessanti delle città italiane, dove c’è uno dei più bei mercati all’aperto (quello di frutta e verdura, è spettacolare!) e dove da anni è in corso un importantissimo lavoro di recupero, ristrutturazione e integrazione. L’installazione si intitola “Amare le differenze” ed è di Angelo Pistoletto.

E proprio sul Magazine del Corriere di un mese fa veniva riportato lo scambio di vedute sull’illuminazione del Duomo di Milano tra il Sindaco Moratti e la Curia. In un articolo intitolato “Come ti cambio le luci della città”, nel quale si richiamano famose esperienze di illuminazione artistica delle città, la giornalista sottolineava proprio la questione: “illuminare una piazza storica, un monumento, non è solo questione di sicurezza o di visibilità: la luce ha un valore artistico intrinseco...”. Non posso che concordare…

E per chi storce il naso, ritenendo poco adatte delle “luminarie” in luoghi nobili delle nostre città, cito un altro passaggio dell’articolo, nel quale si sottolinea che se si trova la giusta illuminazione e quindi il giusto rapporto luce-architettura, si crea un dialogo tra questi elementi che non solo è rispettoso dei luoghi, ma li esalta. Il grande esperto in questo campo, Alain Guilhot, che non parla di luce artificiale ma di sole notturno, dice: “la luce ha un compito pedagogico, cercare i dettagli dell’architettura che di giorno l’occhio non coglie, e terapeutico, far ritrovare la nozione di bellezza “.

A few things that I vaguely know about Turin before I took myself there for the long weekend:

• Where chocolate was invented
• Not much else…

Not knowing anything about a place did not worry me as much as missing my plane to reach the said unknown place for the third time…

For some reason Gatwick airport and I were just not meant to be friends. My sense of direction, timing and anything else that made me a vaguely functional person went haywire every time I head towards Gatwick.

To those who are in a similar situation, grab the Gatwick express and save yourself plenty of grief.

Nestled in the north of Italy, Turin is surrounded by the Alps. When combined with the numerous number of gorgeous architecture within the city meant that I could and should have spent a few more days to really explore it properly.

If you are a bit of a Museum maven, Turin has a number of interesting museums and galleries. Ranging from the Eyptian Museum of Turin to the National Cinema museum. I was happy to wander around aimlessly for the majority of the time, but I did want to see Porta Palazzo, reputedly the biggest open market in Europe.

I love markets in general. Whether it is visiting Kyoto’s Nishiki market or London’s Burough market they are usually a pretty good reflection of how the locals live. In Porta Palazzo’s case, I have never seen so many different varieties of tomatoes being sold in one spot.Had I been a little more mad, I would have bought my weekly grocery and carted it all the way back home to London. Fresh vegetables were just so cheap, with most things costing one euro per kilogram. I could easily imagine spending a long and lazy weekend with some friends in Turin enjying the sights and the food, perhaps come next summer we might just do exactly that.

Foodwise if you have the time, drop in to Baratti & Milano, a confectionery to the Italian royal family that now operated as a cafe and restaurant. I loved the old fashioned charm of the decor and of course the chocolate!
