Assistive technology doesn’t have to be an “official” Portable App for you to install it on a flash drive, nor does it have to be freeware. (But no, you cannot install Dragon NaturallySpeaking on a flash drive.) It depends primarily on  2 things: the ability to choose the flash drive letter for the install location (creating a folder on the drive if necessary) and, ideally, the option NOT to create any shortcuts on the desktop or start menu. It’s just cleaner that way, though shortcuts won’t hurt anything provided you install from your home computer. However, even after you’ve done this, there is still something you may have to watch out for if you’re trying to use public computers — particularly if those computers are on a queue that assigns you to a random machine, e.g. in a library.

There are 2 main types of licenses when you purchase software: per computer and per user. If you’re going to use your flash drive on a public computer, it’s better if your software has a per user license. This means that the license belongs to you, which in turn means that you can use that software on any computer you operate. The only requirement for using per user software on a flash drive is that when you plug it in, you will need to enter the activation code (and possibly the name you registered it with), so DON’T LOSE THAT. I keep a file on my flash drive containing all of my activation codes, so all I need to do is copy and paste. This step is both necessary and beneficial. It’s necessary because in this setup, nothing gets permanently saved to the registry, which is why you need to activate each time. It’s beneficial for the same reason, especially if you can’t use the same computer each time.

If you have USB software with a license that limits the number of computers you can activate on, trying to use different computers becomes dodgy if not impossible. Shades of per-computer enter here, because the program has to count the installation on each machine. When you activate computer-specific software, it saves that activation to the registry — or at least tries to — so that each time you plug your flash drive into that computer, you can run the software without activating. This is problematic on public machines for a couple of reasons.

First, depending on the security settings of the public computer you’re trying to use, it may not like your attempts to modify the registry by activating the software. The software may thus crash or otherwise not run properly. I suspect this is what happened with Typing Assistant, and is partially why I sought other software. Typing Assistant limits its USB version to 3 computers. Even if you get the software to run properly, that kind of license assumes that you’ll always be able to use the same 3 computers. This does not allow for use in, say, a library where you are assigned to available machines at random. You will not always get the same 3 machines. Therefore, you will most likely be out of luck, which kind of defeats the purpose of portable software.

Per computer license agreements are almost always specified at the outset, so that you can decide if that works for your circumstances. Sometimes, per user licenses are also specified, but sometimes they aren’t. For example, I didn’t know Turbo Type had a good, portable per user license until I copied the program folder to my flash drive and tried to use it a couple of times stick typing on friends’ machines, and was pleasantly surprised. It may be that per user licenses are a given unless otherwise specified, but I would be careful in making that assumption. The best thing to do is try the demo of your program, if one exists, because it will usually explain the license to you in case you want to buy it when your time is up.

We all have passwords, and they need to live somewhere.  My history:

Oh the days when they could all be kept straight in my head…that was great.  I was a big fan of picking a single word, then substituting in one numeric character for a similar looking letter.  5wordfish and c1etus were my favorites.  You may recognize Cletus as a (then) lesser known character on the Simpsons.  Who ever would think that I’d pick his name, and be smart enough to stuff a letter in the middle?  Those were the days.  My Geocities account couldn’t have been safer.

Eventually, sites started requiring an uppercase letter…fine.  Then C1etus it would be.  However, this soon morphed into inconsistent requirements from web account to web account.  Lame.  Okay…time to formalize this a bit further…add a rule so I’ll know it’ll be one of three potential password case combinations.  Swell.  It’s a little more complicated, but I can handle it.  Most of these sites don’t lock me out with three tries anyway.

This worked pretty well, but shoot, soon my standard username was taken by someone else.  Who would have thought that “soupanderson” would be such a popular handle?  Soon, two handles became three, became a dozen–and was sometimes one of my four email addresses (a lot at the time).

This turned into a text file with codes…website name, code for whether it was a username or email address, last letter of the user name, then a hint to which of my growing array of passwords.

Lately, every site thinks their formula for password requirements is somehow better than any other site.  Must be 9 characters, have at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number, one special character, no spaces, and no repeating letters.

IE and Firefox (ok, an chrome too) have integrated password managers.  I adopted the Firefox password manager with an extension called “master password timeout” which forces me to enter a super password if I’m not active in the browser for any 2 minute period.

This worked great…but made me nervous.  I’m not the best at locking my workstation if I walk away, and I was an early adopter of portable applications (read: carried my digital life around with me on a 512MB USB drive, later my iPod).

Then came the popularity of online banking.  All of a sudden, I could access secure information about my financial life through my home (or public–yikes) PC.  It started with credit cards, then moved to online brokering and banking like e-trade, then got mainstream with Wells Fargo, TCF Bank, and US Bank. At this point, it didn’t take a slack-jawed yokel to recognize that a simplistic password strategy was just asking for trouble.

I decided to abandon the browser-saved-credentials ship while I was ahead of the game.  My go-forward solution:KeePassPortable (based on KeePass Password Safe).  I’ll deep-dive on the app another time, but the important bullets include:

• Encrypted password file: All of my passwords live in one file, which i can back up as desired, and have a single, ridiculously difficult password to remember, as well as an optional keyfile.
• Easily searchable: one search box to go through my entire password database.
• Lightweight, portable application: It’s not intrusive into my computing experience, and open source to boot.
• Each entry gives me latitude to add notes and other meta data so I can keep things straight.

The biggest downside is that I find myself more and more dependent on KeePass.  As this compounds, I need to open my password file more often, which provides more opportunities for my master password to be compromised.  Though this can be a bit nerve-racking, a good password rotation should keep this in check.

I’ve held firm with the KeePass approach for a solid couple of years now, and it’s still the best play as far as I’m concerned.

Rar Pass Finder is a portable lightweight tool. The interface is only available in German language but since it consists of only two buttons it does not really make a different. The user should start loading a rar password list using the Passwortliste button.

Hellow all, sekarang saya pengen share program apa aja yang powerful di kompie n lappie saya selama ini. Tapi kali ini software-software ini bersifat PORTABLE, alias tidak perlu diinstall di komputer Anda, atau katakanlah di Windows Anda yah, karena filenya berupa .exe yang notabene adalah filenya Windows, bukan Linux, Mac atau OS lainnya.. hehehe.. Enaknya software portable adalah ga perlu diinstall, jadi tidak merusak registry seandainya kalau mau uninstall softwarenya seandainya tidak ingin kita gunakan lagi. Apalagi saya kan double booting, di komputer desktop ada Win XP dan Win Vista. Bisa dibayangin klo seandainya musti install program yang sama di XP n Vista, bisa-bisa kapasitas harddisk habis duluan buat data program nih.. hehehe… Nah betapa berterima kasihnya saya dengan adanya aplikasi portable ini. Jadi tinggal simpan saja program-program portable ini dalam satu folder, tidak perlu pake Share-ing Share-ing an deh, pokoknya XP n Vista sama-sama bisa mengaksesnya.. Dengan demikian aplikasi ini bisa dipergunakan baik di XP n Vista deh.. Dan yang paling jelas semua aplikasi ini FREE lho… ^^

1. 7-Zip Portable. Nah ni buat ekstractor file .rar, .zip, .iso, dan beberapa format arsip lainnya. Ni aplikasi yang paling powerful deh. Musti ada di kompie Anda.

2. CDBurnerXP Portable. Ni burner segala file kedalam media CD atau DVD, entah BluRay bisa apa ngga, ga pernah dicoba sih. Maklum ga sanggup beli playernya. ^^

3. ImgBurn Portable. Nah kalau ini buat ngeburn file-file ISO atau image ke CD atau DVD, jadi kalau dimasukin ke kompie pas booting, bisa langsung jalan deh…

4. OpenOffice Portable. Untuk aplikasi office setingkat Microsoft Office, OpenOffice adalah yang paling tepat, nah pake yang portable aja deh.. Tapi waktu startup program ini lumayan lama, tapi masih bisa ditolerir kok.

5. XAMPP Portable. Nah ni webserver Apache, MySQL, PHPLite yang digabung jadi satu kedalam aplikasi ini. Sebenarnya ada sih satu lagi tapi saya lupa namanya. Kalau pengen jalanin, tinggal klik xampp_start.exe. Di browser tinggal ketik localhost… Beres deh.

6. Firefox Portable. Nah ni pasti udah pada tahu lah ya. Browser yang paten tapi dalam bentuk portable. Bisa diinstall add-on juga kok.

7. Pidgin Portable. Aplikasi chat multi platform, tapi beberapa bulan ini saya dapet warning kalau platform Yahoo akan segera tidak bisa dipakai di aplikasi ini. Mengapa ini terjadi? Tanya Kenapa?!

8. Scibus Portable. Kalau pengen buat Desktop Publishing, Ni aplikasi yang pas untuk melakukannya.

9. Dreamweaver Portable. Aplikasi dreamweaver tidak perlu ditanya lagi kehebatannya, tapi ini dalam bentuk portable, ukurannya pun lebih kecil.

10. Photoshop Portable. Image Editor Profesional pasti menginstal aplikasi ini. Tapi di kompie saja cukup tersedia versi Portablenya. Lumayan lah.

11. Flashget Portable. Tools downloader yang paten. Bisa diintegrasiin ke browser, juga bisa download file torrent lho.

12. vlc portable. Multimedia player handal, bisa mainin hampir semua format audio video terkenal. Tools ini harus ada di komputer anda.

Following on from my ZoomIT post and thinking again about presentation tools,  I started thinking about the ways in which magnification tools generally work an how you might want to use it in a presentation scenario.

The most common magnification applications for Windows I’ve come across are the operating system’s magnifier utility and (portable) Virtual Magnifying Glass (as this is probably the most widely known portable magnifier).  So I’m going to start by taking a look at the commonality and differences between these and ZoomIT.

Virtual Magnifying Glass

This application creates a window centred around the mouse pointer.  Wherever the pointer is  moved the window follows.  Upon clicking to interact with something the magnification window closes.

ZoomIT

The magnifier in ZoomIT is a whole screen magnifier.  The magnification is centred around the mouse pointer and as the pointer is moved around it scrolls the portion of the image that is being shown on screen.  Like the Virtual Magnifying Glass application when interacting you lose the zoom … unless your interaction is to use the drawing mode (as described in the ZoomIT post).

Windows Magnifier

The Windows magnifier creates its magnification window such that it can be placed somewhere on screen but it magnifies the area around the mouse pointer.  So rather than the window moving around or taking up the whole screen, it sits to one side and displays the area around the mouse cursor.  It also allow for interaction so it can “watch” you type for example.

Please note that the example used here is the Windows XP magnifier (as I believe that this is version of Windows currently most “in play”), but the latest version bundled with Windows 7 is more or less an extension of the XP version with some additional tweaks and some of the Virtual Magnifying Glass and ZoomIT application features included.  For specific details about the Windows 7 magnifier take a look at the BLTT post about it.

Issues for Presenters

Whilst these can all certainly help presenters, there is a bit of a limitation here.  Whilst I love the features that ZoomIT provides for a presenter I do find that not being able to zoom in on something I want to interact with is a bit of a limitation.  For example if I’m trying to show people how to use a piece of software for example.  The alternative is to use Windows magnifier and this is certainly a practical alternative, but there are two issues I find with this.

The first is that magnifier varies between versions of Windows and finding it can sometimes be a bit of hassle.  For me personally not so much, but for some end users trying to explain where to find them if they have to go out and use someone else’s presentation computers is just a headache I could do without.  Portable applications for presenters give consistency and are most certainly the way forward.

The second issue is something I call the “Doom Presentation Effect”.  This is after the first person shooter game of my youth – Doom.  Often when watching others play first person shooters the quick movements of the full screen shifting can start to give some people a bit of motion sickness.  It also requires a lot of additional concentration.  Not good for a presentation where you want people to be concentrating on the content.

So is there an alternative?  Yes there is.  After scouring the Internet and trying out more magnifiers than I ever thought existed, I found one that looks a little dated with its interface but offers a feature that does the job nicely.

Desktop Zoom

Desktop Zoom has a range of magnification features mostly reproduced by the other tools here – often in a way I found easier to use.  However the thing that is particularly noteworthy is an option to have “fixed window” zoom.  This creates an on screen area which you specify for which Desktop Zoom will create a window that displays a zoomed view of the area.  You can interact with the area on screen and it will give you a zoomed display (which it won’t seem to let me capture in a screen shot) of you interacting.  It even lets you specify how the mouse pointer displays which can help you in showing your interaction if you have the usual small mouse pointers.

So would I exclusively use Desktop Zoom?  No, but I would recommend having this in your collection of presentation tools alongside ZoomIT.  That way no matter where you are you can keep zooming tools to hand to help you get your message across.

After FlagIT, RebootIT, PostIT and SpotIT, ZoomIT sounds like part of the theme. Unfortunately it isn’t, but it is a great free tool from SysInternals.

ZoomIT is a tool that lends itself to assisting presenters by allowing them to not only zoom in on an area of the screen but also to temporarily add annotations on the screen.  The latest version (v3.03) also includes a break timer.  One thing I did find was that the instructions were hidden away and not laid out as I would have liked, so I’ve decided to put my slant on things and talk about how to use it here.

Running ZoomIT

ZoomIT is what I would describe as ‘ultra-portable’.  This is probably overstating things, but as well as being able to download it and put it on your hard drive or flash drive, SysInternals also offer an option to download and run  it directly (should your web browser allow).  It’s only really a difference between downloading a ZIP file and the EXE file, but it is a nice touch when you’re in a rush on someone else’s PC and want to grab a copy temporarily.

When you run it, ZoomIT sits in the system tray, and you can access the functionality through the system tray menu by (right or left) clicking on the icon or through hot key combinations.

Zooming

The main feature is zooming.  This is full screen mouse pointer based zooming which means that the entire screen will be used to project the zoomed area and it will be centred about the position of the mouse pointer.  To enter zoom mode you can either select it from the system tray menu or by using the hot key combination which by default is CTRL+1.

• The scroll option on a mouse or touch pad will zoom in and out as will using the up and down arrow keys.
• Pressing ESC or right clicking will exit zoom mode.
• Left clicking or pressing a key that can be used in draw mode will switch to draw mode.

There’s also a live zoom feature in ZoomIT that allows the screen to be updated/ interacted with whilst zoomed.  Unfortunately this is only available on Windows Vista and later versions of Windows.  There are also a number of limitations around using other features and from the description it also sounds prone to maybe using a little bit too much memory and producing a little too much flicker.  If you want this sort of option then there are alternative pieces of software which I’ll come back to in another blog post quite soon.

Annotating

ZoomIT allows you to effectively take a snapshot of the screen and then to draw on it by using the draw mode option which is again available from the system tray icon’s menu.  As mentioned above it can also be entered by using left clicking or pressing one of the keys that is used to draw something in draw mode (more details on these below).

When in draw mode you can left click and move the pointer to draw shapes just like you might in a paint program You stay in draw mode between clicks so you can draw multiple shapes – thank fully it isn’t an Etcha Sketch.  There are a variety of standard shapes that can be drawn including straight lines, straight lines with arrow heads (the head is drawn at the starting point of the line), rectangles and ellipses.  You can also add text to the screen.

To make things even clearer draw mode provides you with some colour choices for drawing and typing and a selection of eighteen line widths for drawing.  Unfortunately the text size and font is standard, but you can set this in the ZoomIT options (again available from the system tray icon’s menu).

TIP: Before you enter text mode set the colour of your text as you can’t change it once you’re typing as you’ll just end up typing the key you pressed.  Also be careful you don’t type off the screen.

As well as drawing onto the screen you can also clear the screen and set it to a black background or a white background.  Unfortunately it really does clear the screen wiping any drawing that you have already done.  If you just want to wipe the screen clean then there’s a key for that and the standard undo option of CTRL+Z which works against an eight step history of actions.

TIP: If you’re presenting and need a bouncing red ball is to enter draw mode, set the colour to red and whack the line size up to maximum.  The resulting cursor is a perfect red ball for you to use.

Finally there’s an option to centre your cursor to the middle of the screen area being displayed.  I’m not really sure what the purpose of this is, but if you want to draw a graph I guess this is a good way to get back to an origin.

You can exit the draw mode by right clicking on the screen.  ESC is also an option but will exit zoom mode and drawing mode, so if you’re zoomed in and want to remain in zoom mode use a right click not ESC.  Should you happen to have entered text entry mode (within draw mode) pressing ESC or right clicking will only bring you out of text entry (as will left clicking) and into the standard draw mode.  A little inconsistent but easy to get used to.

A nice touch is the addition of a shortcut key to take you straight into draw mode without having to enter zoom mode (and potentially zoom out) first.  The default hot key combination for this is CTRL+2.

Screen Capture

In either the zoom or draw modes you also have the option at any point to capture the screen.  As well as offering a copy to the clipboard option there is also a save option.  The save option will save the screen as a portable network graphics (PNG) image and offers you a choice of the screen at actual size or zoomed in … even if you aren’t zoomed in but are in draw mode.  That aside this save option is much more valuable than the copy as unless I was going to crop a particular area I’d only be saving the screen shot in any case.

Break Timer

The third mode is as ever accessible from the system tray icon menu.  This is a simple count down display but with a number of options that again lend them to use in a presentation or workshop environment.

The count down timer is set from the options dialog (available from the system tray icon menu).  The countdown is specified in minutes and can range from 1 to 99 minutes (though you can enter zero manually … though I’ve no idea why you would want to).  When it runs the countdown is displayed on screen an accuracy of a second  – i.e. “mm:ss” format.

Under the advanced options you can specify a number of features such as an audio file to play when the time is up, the transparency of the timer and the background image (if any you would like it to use).  There’s also an option to choose where to display the timer on the screen based upon a 3×3 grid layout of the screen.  This means that you can choose to show the background image of the screen or use an image with some instructions on and have the timer display in a clear area of the screen.

Another option for the timer is to display the time elapsed after it has reached zero.  You should be aware that it displays this in brackets beneath the “0:00″ display and it will cause the area the timer is being displayed in to expand up and down.  So if you have a carefully crafted background image be aware that it might not fit after it reaches zero if you have this option enabled.

It is also worth noting that there is not option to change the font (size, typeface, embellishments) or the colour (you can have any colour you like as long as it’s red), so you may need to account for this if you were planning on a background colour for your countdown.

It would be nice to see a few options to choose a range of preset timers (each with it’s own settings) in the future as if you are presenting and need different lengths you have to interrupt the presentation to set them, but with each revision I’m sure we’ll see the feature set around break timers improve.

So now you’ve read through the features and have some idea of how to use the application it’s time to give a bit of a summary on how to access all the functions.

Summary

As you’ve seen this utility has a rich feature set.  Hopefully the next version will address some of the little niggles I’ve highlighted here, but even without them being updated this is a really useful bit of freeware that I’d recommend to anyone running Windows.

I was bored so I wanted to make the most out of my usb device. I managed so far to boot a light version of XP and Vista from it and once booted there are lots of applications for almost any case. However in this particular post I will show only portable windows applications which will take approximately 400-800 MB space on your device depending on your needs.

I’m using a 2GB Qimonda usb device with the following portable applications. I have to admit many applications aren’t necessary for most people. Besides a lot of programmes are from the website PortableApps.com. Another awesome site is Pendrives.com by the way.

• 7zip File archiver and compressor
• Bluetoothview shows all bluetooth devices nearby
• BootIt changes the removable bit on usb devices. So any pc would threat the usb device as an external hard disc (be careful, it doesn’t warn you if you change a partition other than the one on your usb device for instance your 2nd hard disc partition. If it – by any means – did happen anyway you can use TestDisk in order to reverse the effect without any data loss)
• Cpu-z shows the current frequency of your CPU
• CurrPorts displays open ports
• Dev-C++ compiler
• DriveMan file manager
• FileZilla FTP client
• GIMP General Image Manipulation Program
• InfraRecorder Nero alike burning tool
• Irfanview image browser
• JPEGSnoop displays header information about pictures, for instance what program was used to create a picture or pdf
  
• Mozilla Firefox best browser there is (at least in my subjective opinion)
• Notepad++ awesomely fast text editor with many features, for instance it highlights all common computer languages
• OpenOffice open-source office application including word, excel, power point
• WinAudit displays lots of system hardware information
• VLC Player plays all kinds of video or audio files. The only disadvantage appears in displaying subtitles from time to time. Other than that it’s the best player there is

• Tor network tool to keep you at least a little bit anonymous
• RegSeeker powerful registry tool
• Restauration restores files that have been deleted in garbage (even after formatting the a device)
• RockXP4 shows some information about a xp system e.g. serial code; usually anti-virus tools detect it as dangerous software – don’t worry it’s not
• Network Scanner fast IP scanning tool, shows you mac-addresses of any PC in your IP-range and displays shared folders
• Sumatra PDF PDF reader
• SysSpec displays lots of system specific information
• Ultimate Windows Tweaker lets you configure many easy and good described adjustments especially useful for windows vista
• UltraVNC Viewer remote control utility (well since ultra VNC supports web clients, you probably won’t need it anymore)
• UsbWebserver copy & paste & run it, an apache, mysql and php server on your usb device; quite handy for presentation purposes (besides it’s way easier to run than  xamp/wamp)
  
• Usbdeview analyses usb devices, e.g. writing and reading speed (exactly the data common seller don’t like to put on the package for obvious reasons)
• WhoisThisDomain checks the public owner information of websites
• Winamp + Ipod support powerful audio player, especially useful for people that don’t like iTunes, you can put new mp3s and photos on your ipod with merely running this application from the ipod itself
  
• WinIPS tool to easily change IPs (much faster than the ordinary vista way)
  
• WirelessNetView displays all reachable wireless networks and their security configuration even when the SSID is hidden
• Xenon File Manager obviously a file manager
• XP-AntiSpy handy tool to shut down annoying default windows services (under vista you have to start it with administration rights in order to use all functions)

Awhile ago Technibble release an extremely popular download called “Computer Repair Utilities” that featured 57 apps that could be ran off of a USB drive, which was great for any computer user interested in some great portable software. However, they have since taken the package down citing

“Some of the applications, while freeware, wanted the only download location of their software to be at the makers sites and I respect that” (Source)

If you want to dig through some search engines for the kit you may be able to find it under “Computer Repair Utility Kit”, but beware of who is hosting the files as they may be malware infected. For those looking for a different route, I will list out the apps inside of that package (or outside) that I deem useful and worth downloading. The following are the 19 portable apps that I deem “must have”.

1. Open Office Portable – 231 MB installed. Great alternative to MS Office, especially for an on-the-go situation. The only downfall here is that it does run a little slower than you’ll be used to but nice to have nonetheless.
2. Pidgin Portable- 13-50 MB. Portable IM software that allows you to run a bevy of different IM clients.

3. VLC Media Player Portable- 20-32MB Installed. If you’ve never heard of VLC Media player, then boy are you missing out. It can play just about any media file but it’s especially useful to play videos that give Windows Media Player trouble. It may not have the robust display and and library options as WMP, but it’s a great lightweight alternative that I can’t live without.
4. Yod’m3D- 12MB. Yod’m3D is a virtual desktop manager that allows you to have 4 virtual desktops. This may sound abstract or confusing for long time Windows users, but Linux users have utilized this useful feature for some time now. I encourage you to give it a try, you may find it helps you feel less stressed if you often work with a cluttered desktop.
5. Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool- 9MB. This malware scanner does a pretty good job at finding and removing anything harmful on your computer. It includes quick scan, full scan, and custom scan modes and it’s definitely worth a download if you’re helping a lot of Windows users with virus issues. NOTE: Please be sure to check back with Microsoft’s website every month to make sure you have the most up to date version.
6. 7-Zip Portable- 2.5MB. You never know when you might need this compressing/decompressing app. It can handle such popular extensions as .7z, .zip, and .rar to name a few.
7. CCleaner Portable- 2.5MB. CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is an incredibly useful app that can help you save space on your hard drive and boost performance. It can scan your computer for old, unused, or temporary files that you probably don’t need anymore and let you choose whether to remove them or not. It can also scan your registry for errors or unused extensions, giving it a nice clean. It also offers an easy to use Start up manager.

8. JKDefrag- 3.5MB. A powerful defragmenting tool that gives the user a lot more freedom then the standard Windows Disk Defrag.
9. Unstoppable Copier- 100kb. Unstoppable Copier is a great tool for recovering corrupt data as it attempts to recover any little piece that it can, usually giving you a satisfying end result.

10. Autoruns- 1.2MB. Autoruns is an awesome app that will give you a great breakdown of your startup services and applications, allowing you to get deeper control of what loads when your computer boots.

11. Produkey-60kb. Produkey will allow you to view your Microsoft product keys which would be extremely useful in the event that you have to do a clean install and have lost your XP or Office CD keys.

12. TreeSize Free- 1MB. TreeSize lets you choose a storage space and shows you what files and directories are occupying the most space. Useful if you’re looking to free up some hard drive space.

13. Memtest- 60kb. Memtest is a great tool to have if your working with a comptuer that shows RAM failure signs such as certain BSOD’s or random restarts. There are more powerful and thorough RAM test tools out there though, so dont rely solely on this software.
14. Firefox Portable- 27-77MB. The great web browser now can run off a flash drive! I was once working on a laptop that couldn’t access webpages although it had a fine connection to the internet. Booting off of Firefox Portable and being able to access any website just fine quickly led me to find some errors on the users Firefox settings, and not something larger. Thanks Firefox Portable!
15. Recuva- 1.75MB. Recuva is a another recovery tool that offers a clean interface allowing you to easily select which files you want to resurrect.

16. TweakUI and Ultimate Windows Tweaker- 260kb and 650kb. These tweaking tools can be used to control different aspects of your OS such as performance and networking settings to name a few. TweakUI is for Windows XP users, where Ultimate Windows Tweaker is for Vista.
17. Malwarebytes- 2.7MB (Must be installed). While not truly portable, this antivirus often finds different kinds of malware that other scanners don’t. I would always suggest using Malwarebytes on a computer showing signs of viruses.
18. SUPERAntiSpyware- 19MB Installed. Another superb virus and malware scanner.  Just download the setup and install onto your flash drive, but don’t forget to update the virus definitions.
19. HijackThis- 400kb. For those that don’t know, this tool is the standard in finding out what’s going on with your computer when you have popups, slowdown, or any other annoying problem. It will scan all activity on your computer and give you a log of whats going on. From there you have three options: analyze it yourself, let a more advanced tech look at it, or upload the log to a site designed to check it for common signs of malware.
