1. Mozilla Firefox Portable.

Chances are that you own a flash drive to hold your personal information with you when you travel – wouldn’t it be nice to take your browser with you? Well now you can! This has been out for a while but not many seem to know about it. I use it and I have to say it is excellent to be able to slap a stick in the computer at my college and just have it load up with PortableApps (more on PortableApps in the other article). With Mozilla FireFox able to go with you on any windows system it is apparent you no longer need to lug around your laptop to do all your work. In addition it works exactly the same as the regular FireFox, and you can install as many add-ons and plug-ins as your heart desires – I have. Speed might seem like an issue with boot up – and it can be if you are using an olderflash drive that doesn’t support USB 2.0 – however from what I have done so far I have to say that Mozilla Firefox PE is much FASTER than my computer! It actually loads up really quickly and is really nice – forget Ativa’s U3 software (which I also use because I have a U3Flash Drive ) which only has FireFox 1.5 available at the last time I checked. All you need to do to run the application is to first download PortableApps (which comes bundled with it) or to downloads the version of PortableApps which is plain and then use the utility within the launch program by clicking options to install. It’s extremely simple and user friendly. I highly recommend you check this out along with PortableApps – but that you do so with a newerflash drive (This can also work on Writeable CD’s and other devices that contain memory assigned a drive letter – even your camera)

Von Softmaker kommt demnächst ein neues Office-Paket: 2010 für Windows. Die Download-Datei ist 133M Byte groß. Bis Ende November kann man das Office Paket kostenlos testen. Auf der Homepage muss man für den Download eine Mailadresse hinterlegen, um die Seriennummer zu erhalten (Trashmail funktioniert).

Was unterscheidet Softmaker Office von Microsofts Megapaket und dem kostenlosen OpenOffice? Für mich sind mehrere Punkte wichtig:

• man kann auch problemlos eine portable Version für USB-Sticks erzeugen
• es ist sehr schnell (Textmaker innerhalb 1 Sekunde vom USB-Stick!!!)
• es ist übersichtlich
• beschränkt sich auf das Wesentliche

Ich habe es unter Windows 7 64Bit Professional installiert und es läuft ohne Probleme.

Unter dem Menü Hilfsprogramme findet man das Tool für die portable Version:

Da ich den Total Commander nun seit 12 Jahren einsetze (meine erste Version müsste die 2.0 gewesen sein), starte ich ein kleines “Spiel”:

Das Gratistool zum bequemen Erstellen von bootfähigen USB-Sticks ist erschienen. Es läuft auch unter Windows 7, wie ich mit meiner 64Bit Professional Verison validieren konnte.

Die portable Programme Opera und Firefox werden immer beliebter. Doch eine gemeinsame Plattform für Bookmarks/Lesezeichen gibt es noch nicht (zumindest ist mir nichts bekannt).
Es gibt jedoch einen Weg, die Lesezeichen von OperaUSB in den FirefoxPortable zu transferieren:
zunächst startet man OperaUSB und exportiert die Bookmarks als HTML-Datei:

Mit dem OperaUSB sind wir hiermit schon fertig. Nun startet man den FirefoxPortable und ruft den Lesezeichen-Manager auf:

Es erscheint ein Dialogfenster. Dort ruft man unter “Importieren und Sichern” den Import von HTML-Lesezeichen auf:

Jetzt aber nicht auf Opera klicken (dies bräuchte man, wenn man die Anwendungen regulär installiert hätte, also auf den portablen Modus verzichtet), sondern auf “aus HTML-Datei”.

Nun nur noch den Pfad suchen und die Datei anklicken.

Nach ein paar Sekunden sind die Bookmarks als Lesezeichen importiert.

Schritt 1 besteht darin, die gesammelten Lesezeichen im FirefoxPortable als HTML-Datei zu exportieren. Hierzu ruft man wieder den Lesezeichen-Manager auf und klickt dann auf “Importieren und Sichern”, dann auf “HTML exportieren”:

Nun den OperaUSB starten und im Menü auf “Datei/Import und Export” und dann auf “Netscape/Firefox-Lesezeichen importieren” klicken. Es erscheint ein Windows-Dateidialog, in dem man die vorher exportierten Lesezeichen in der HTML-Datei sucht und öffnet:

Hat alles geklappt, dann meldet OperaUSB die Anzahl der importierten Lesezeichen:

Things You’ll Need:

• Universal Extractor
• WinRar
• Setup exe. file of the program you wish to use.

Step1. The first thing you are going to need to do is download two programs, Universal Extractor and WinRar. To download the Universal Extractor, to to the software section at http://www.legroom.net . Follow the simple instructions on download and installation. To download WinRar, go to the download section of http://www.rarlabs.com . Download the free trial version, and follow their simple instructions.
Step2. Once you download the two programs you will need for this process, decide which program you would like to install. For example, you could download the free music recording and editing software Audacity from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ .
Step3. After your program is downloaded, right-click on the setup file. If you have properly installed Universal Extractor, one of your options should be to uniextract to sub-directory. A command prompt will open and it will automatically extract to a folder, on your desktop or wherever you save it.
Step4. Open the folder, and search for the folder which contains the executable file that opens the application(you can test it to make sure it works properly). Highlight all of the files needed for the program in that folder. Right-click, and click on add to archive.

Step5. Change the archive name to whatever you want, such as: Audacity Portable. Click on create SFX archive. Choose “best” under the category “Compression Method”.
Step6. Go to the advanced tab. Click on SFX options. When the options window comes up, type the name of the executable (Audacity.exe) in “Run After Extraction” in the SetUp Program category. In the Modes tab, click on unpack to temporary folder and hide all. In the Update tab, click on “Overwrite All Files”.

Step7. Click OK to exit both windows. If all has gone correctly, it should create a single executable file that you can copy to your flash drive, mp3 player, or external hard drive and use from any computer you choose.

After the unpleasantness, I could very easily have gone quietly but demonstrably insane. Left without a working computer, I was cut off: no social networking, no news, no music. Of course, I could always use an internet café, but what about my settings? What would I do without my usual files, my emails, my calendar? Could I really be expected to to recall the myriad logins and passwords for an untold number of websites? Luckily, being a fairly neurotic sort, I had already recreated the majority of the stuff I needed most on a USB stick.

The Portable Apps suite is a collection of portable versions of popular programs to help you take your computer with you wherever you go. Install the suite as it is and you will have Firefox for browsing, Thunderbird for your emails, Pidgin for instant messaging, the KeePass password manager for all the websites you usually visit and OpenOffice for all your documents. There’s even a version of ClamWin antivirus to give you some security! With a little bit of work, there is no reason why you can’t have an approximation of your hard drive on a USB stick, not only to make computing at different computers easier, but also so that you have a backup if you are as clumsy with screwdrivers and power sources as I am.

There are two versions of the suite available. The full-fat package needs at least a 512MB drive, as it will take up 355MB of space, though this is relatively modest when you consider the size of USB drives that are available. The Light suite is slimmer stilll, needing just 256MB of space; for this though, you forego OpenOffice and only get the AbiWord word processor instead. That’s still a lot of functionality in a tidy little package, though, and I haven’t come across any sub 1GB USB sticks for a while now.

The Portable Apps suite is incredibly easy to install. Simply download the installation package, plug in a (preferably clean) USB stick into a port and install. It’s not the quickest process, but once set up, you can open up the Portable Apps platform and have a look at the programs installed. There is also a folder for any files you work on that you wish to save. The one quibble I would have is that there isn’t a way to automate syncing between hard drive and portable programs, so you will have to take the time to recreate your accounts for a couple of the apps. Nevertheless, using the suite is more convenient than having to remember all of the details by several orders of magnitude.

USB sticks are great for carrying files around, but the Portable Apps suite means that you can take your programs as well. Even better, once installed, provided you have enough capacity, you can also install additional programs that aren’t included in either version. Visit the Portable Apps website and you can find a host of other portable programs, from graphics editors to systems utilities and more games. Adding them to existing suites is a breeze, and it means that you can configure your portable suite to your liking.

I honestly have trouble thinking of a more convenient way to carry my passwords and favourite programs with me when I’m not using my own computer. As I said, I could easily have become unhinged after my rig blew up, but thanks to the fact that I had backed up my identities and work files on to my Portable Apps suite, what could have been a travesty in the end was simply a major headache. You may not be religious about backing up, but if you’d hate to lose your most important data to a data meltdown, the least you can do is install Portable Apps on a USB drive today. Even if you just stick it in a drawer and forget about it for a while, you’ll know where to turn if things do go bad.
