Kebetulan hari ini saya instalasi windows XP di laptop baru sampai pulang kerja sekitar jam 10 malem. Tapi akhirnya selesai juga tu kerjan. Mungkin untuk instalasinya sama saja seperti ngistall windows biasa tinggal booting cd di CD-ROOM/DVD-ROOM. Cuman ada perbedaanya sedikit untuk settingan biosnya agar windows XP dapat deteksi hardisk SATA yang mulanya pada option “AHCI” diganti dengan “Compatible” or “IDE”.

So as all of you know, I did own a beautiful Palm Z22 and a nice (but old) Dell Inspiron 1300.. Well not any more; because of the simple fact that they are stolen the first day I was on holiday in the Netherlands.

That’s what the Dutch call a warm welcome.

Besides that my Creative Vado, external hard disk (with all the data of my company including the bank account details) and me and my wife’s passports and driving licenses were stolen.

How’s that for stealing someone’s life huh?

When it was stolen (in the train from Haarlem-Amsterdam on the Amsterdam central station) I immediately went to the local police station, which wasn’t very helpful either.

“You are lucky you are in the Netherlands now!”, they said, referring that I don’t need my passport right away. “Well, that is just the problem. Me and my wife don’t live in the Netherlands, but in the UK.”, I said.

How am I supposed to be lucky at all even if I was in my own country when it happened? And it didn’t stop there, when I told the police officer of all the other things which were stolen, she smiled and said: “Maybe there is any chance you can buy your stuff back on Marktplaats (Dutch E bay).”. My mouth fell open.. What is this? Street justice?

I knew the Dutch police were terrible – if not the most terrible ever – but this was beyond my imagination, the police not even recognizing my charge told me to buy my own stuff back?

So, a little tip for the future: Keep always an eye on your stuff in the Netherlands, because when it gets stolen, you don’t get anything back. Not even a police statement.

But of course, with all bad things come good things; and for me it was that I could buy all new stuff. Okay, not that good because it costed me money, but well, it was kind of fun.

As a replacement of my Palm Z22 I bought a Toshiba Portégé G910 which is in my opinion is the perfect hand-held (smart phone) for me. It has some downsides though. It is terribly slow sometimes, because of the massive LCD screen it is hard to build up the screen when you have like 100 applications open (not really strange though). The fingerprint reader doesn’t work well some times. But for the rest? Perfect!

And, of course I needed a new laptop too.. Because I only use the laptop to develop stuff on, it didn’t need to be such a powerful laptop¹ therefore I choose the Dell Inspiron Mini 10v with a 1.60Ghz processor and 1024MB RAM.

It hasn’t arrived yet, so I owe you a review on that.

¹ A developer using a slower computer thinks more about the user then about his own interpretation. Because he needs to code in such a way that it is workable for him, he also works in favour for the user. Users with a slow computer have better working application then developers who uses a fast computer. This was covered by the research of Dirk Bergman in 2006.

A good piece of (computer) hardware shows attention to the user and to user interface design (although not in the software sense). I have had an experience in contrasts of late that show what a difference good hardware engineering can make.

I have been working with the Toshiba Portege M100 laptop, and have found its design to be “interesting” to say the least. The LED lights that describe all of the various details commonly found on the outside cannot easily be seen when the system is in operation: they are pointing towards the ceiling on the top of the open display lid. The mouse buttons are confusing: there is no left/right button – rather, the “right” button is on the bottom and the “left” button is on the top of the two larger buttons. The purpose of the two tiny buttons are unclear.

The batteries and their installation is also an interesting study. The latch to “unlock” the battery is a slider with a locking mechanism in the middle: it is hard to describe. You’ve never seen anything like it, and operating it can be, at least initially, mystifying. There is also no way to determine whether a battery is charged or dead by looking at it.

This machine, the Toshiba Portege M100, can be contrasted with the HP nc4010. Batteries on the nc4010 have a four-LED light display which not only shows the state of the battery, but also provides (for the battery wizards!) an error display (but good luck determining what the error displays are…). The batteries snap into place and are set to go; removing a battery is a matter of moving a spring-loaded latch right next to the battery that shows a battery symbol. The battery symbol is built into the case itself in relief: this prevents the logo from “rubbing off”. Similar symbols can be found for RAM, hard disk, battery #2 (travel battery), and keyboard.

The capability of using a second battery shows foresight on the part of the designers as well: there is no obvious way that the M100 could take a second battery.

Instead of a sliding catch to unlock the top lid like the M100, there is the more commonly seen pushbutton latch. Several LEDs are built into the front edge of the machine – on the corner, so that the displays can be seen both from the top and from the front – that is, these LEDs can be seen easily by the user whether the machine is in operation or not.

Even the logo on the top of the computer itself shows attention (or lack thereof) to detail. The logo on the Portege M100 is only readable to the user (who presumably owns the machine); the HP, like Apple, has their logo large and in the middle and readable to passersby when the machine is open. Apple took this one step further and lit up the logo!

Another common mistake is the port cover on the back of the machine. The Compaq Armada E500, for instance, like so many of its kind, has a large one that goes nearly the entire length of the back of the laptop. Toshiba uses a small one with no obvious way to open it: instead of pulling it down from the top, it is opened by pressing down near the hinge, though there is no description of how to do this on the machine itself.

In all cases, these “latches” or covers will often get broken off and disappear. The HP nc4010 has no cover/latch in the back – thus nothing to break off.

Once again, all ports on the back of HP nc4010 are labeled by labels in relief built directly into the plastic; the Toshiba M100 labels nearly all of them with painted on labeling.

Even the plastic itself shows an attention to detail: the M100 uses a silver-painted white plastic; the nc4010 uses black plastic with no paint. This means that as the machine gets older, the Toshiba M100 will show evidence of the white plastic underneath as the paint is worn away – and the HP shows none of this.

The HP nc4010 is not without its mistakes: there are several painted labels, and there is a PCMCIA insert that can be lost. On the nc4010 the speakers point to away from the listener to the left and to the right – the Compaq Armada E500, though bigger, put them in the front pointing directly up at the listener on the left and right sides.

This sort of engineering can be seen in other areas as well: how hard is it to repair the product, for instance? Many servers – Sun and HP servers in particular – can be easy to maintain. However, consider the Apple laptop: pulling one apart (to replace a hard drive for instance) can require removing 30 or more screws – a definite mistake. Does pulling the system apart require special tools – or any tools at all? Some servers can be maintained, at least in part, without any tools at all – replace PCI cards, install memory, install or replace hard drives – all without tools.

All of this design is not specifically user interface design, but the fundamentals are the same: consider the user, consider what will happen in the future, and consider how the system will be used. In my experience, HP and Compaq have both been excellent in their design engineering.

What are your thoughts and experiences?

I don’t know how this slipped past me. Earlier this year, Toshiba and Sun announced that OpenSolaris would ship on certain Toshiba laptops then followed through with their announcement on schedule.

This is not necessarily as unusual as it might sound at first glance: Toshiba has been remarketing the Sun Sparc chip for some time, and has a history of working tightly with Sun Microsystems. The only other company that was just as likely to create an OpenSolaris laptop would be Tadpole, although Tadpole laptops have in the past used the Sparc chip from Sun instead of Intel chips.

Two different models are available: the Portege R600 and the Tecra M10. They are available from the OpenSolaris folks at Sun with free shipping until the end of June.

Dải cáp mỏng nối ổ SSD 128 GB với bảng mạch chủ. Ổ lưu trữ thể rắn này không cần đến vỏ bọc, lộ rõ 8 chip nhớ. Toshiba mới đây công bố ổ SSD lên tới 500 GB.

Ổ quang trong R600 cũng là ổ ghi DVD mỏng nhất trên thị trường (7 mm) và cũng được gắn với bảng mạch bằng dải cáp mỏng.

Những phần không cần thiết đã được cắt bỏ để bảng mạch trông gọn nhẹ hơn.

Cổng nguồn cũng không được hàn trực tiếp vào bảng mạch và được đặt ở cạnh (thay vì phía sau) để người sử dụng không quên cắm vào hoặc rút ra khi di chuyển laptop.

Quạt làm mát dày hơn một chút so với phiên bản Portege R500 và hệ thống sử dụng chip tiết kiệm điện năng Intel Core 2 Duo U9400 1,4 GHz.

Bàn phím vẫn gắn với phần màn hình cả khi các linh kiện bên trong được gỡ ra.

Màn hình được tháo rời.

Màn hình mỏng và có thể uốn cong.

Nắp gập màn hình rất mỏng nhưng vẫn đủ chỗ để lắp webcam.

Mặt sau bàn phím và bàn lăn chuột cảm ứng.

Wahhh… hampirr saja laptopku rusak! tapi alhamdulillah ternyata semuanya masih jalan normal dan gak kurang sedikitpun.

Ceritanya begini… kemaren pagi aku sempet pake bentar laptop tuk ngecek email dan sedikit browsing, da selesai aku matiin laptop tapi gak sampe nutup layarnya karna saat proses shutdown langsung aku tinggal ke belakang.

Gak lama, dzaky (da hampir 3 taon) yang baru mandi ganti baju diruang keluarga seperti biasa… kebetulan mamanya ambil baju di kamar sebelah n aku masih di kamar.

Gak seberapa lama, dzaky datang sambil ngomong.. “Yahh… dzaky cemprot-cemprot unya ayah”

Aku gak seberapa perhatian, paling-paling nyemprot kasur atau lantai dengan mainan pistol air barunya. Pas aku keluarrr… waaaahhhhh… laptopku da basah kuyupppp!!

Aku sebenarnya pengen marah ama dzaky… tapi liat umurnya jadi gak tega, aku cuman nasehatin dengan sedikit agak keras, agar hal itu gak diulangi lagi.

Karna laptop lagi basah kuyup, aku gak berani nyalakan… langsung aku keringkan pake lap kering, aku hadapkan kipas angin yang menyala setelah itu aku jemur di bawah sinar matahari langsung sampe sore.

Sorenya, setelah merasa cukup kering… aku mencoba nyalakan.. itupun sedikit ragu2.. takut keyboard and LCDnya rusak hehehe… pengennya aku mau bawa tukang servis biar dicek dulu… tapi nekat ajaa… dan…

Alhamdulillah semuanya jalan seperti biasa dan tidak ada yang rusak sama sekali… alhamdulillah… gak jadi ngeluarin duit buat beli/servis keyboard and LCD

Sayang gak bisa ambil poto saat laptopku basah kuyup.. maklum aku panik sekali saat itu jadi gak kepikiran ambil poto buat bukti di blog ini

Toshiba Portege M100

Akhirnya… setelah 1 bulan lebih dikit gak update blog, karna laptop da dibeli sodara…

Sekarang bisa nger.NET lagi karna ada laptop ‘baru’… sebenarnya bukan murni baru tapi laptop bekas yang baru beli hehe…

Boleh percaya boleh tidak… laptop yg aku beli ini sama persis dengan laptop lamaku yg aku jual ke sodara! jodoh kali pake Toshiba Portege M100.

Laptop yang lama kebetulan batere da drop jadi pengen dijual dan ganti baru. Pengennya sih beli netbook baru sepeti Acer Aspire One atao Lenovo Ideapad S9/S10.

Tapi setelah liat-liat di pameran komputer… wahh kayaknya gak cocok bgt buat aku… layarnya terlalu kecil cuman 8.9″ – 10″, gak ada DVD combo tuk mbaca DVD dan mbakar CD n yg jelas harganya pada naik semua karna dollar semakin melangit.

Akhirnya cari yang seken di beberapa forum jual beli, setelah browsing, memilah, memutuskan, menawar… akhirnya dibeli juga Toshiba Portege M100 seharga 4 juta termasuk ongkos kirim ke surabaya.

Harganya selisih 700 ribu aja, karna laptopku yang lama laku 3.3 juta…. ya itung-itung 700 ribu buat beli batere, karna laptop lama batere udah mampus dan yang baru beli bisa tahan 3-4 jam plus bonus tas dan softcase merk Targus yg lumayan yahud hehehe..

Ahhh… yang jelas sekarang bisa ngeblog lagi, dah lama gak blogwalking nih…

Pernah mengalami BIOS anda terproteksi dan anda lupa password-nya? Atau, laptop Portege M600 anda setelah anda nyalakan, kemudian meminta autentikasi sidik jari (fingerprint), tetapi selalu gagal setiap anda mencoba autentikasi dan akhirnya laptop tidak bisa masuk ke sistem operasi?

Ane punya tips bagaimana mencoba reset password BIOS/clear fingerprint key anda. Tetapi sebelum anda mengikuti langkah-langkah dari saya, pastikan anda sudah mengetahui resiko yang bisa terjadi pada laptop anda, seperti kehilangan jaminan garansi dan resiko lainnya.

Jika laptop anda masih dalam masa garansi toko tempat anda membeli laptop, sebaiknya klaim garansi untuk memperbaiki masalah laptop anda, karena pada tips yang ane berikan, kita perlu membuka panel penutup bagian bawah laptop anda yang dimana pada bagian panel tersebut biasanya terletak segel garansi dari toko anda membeli, jika segel rusak maka garansi tidak akan berlaku lagi. Sebaiknya stop saja niat anda jika anda ragu.

OK…bagi yang sudah mengerti poin diatas, berarti sudah tidak ada masalah lagi bagi anda soal garansi, dan akan saya lanjutkan langkah-langkahnya.

1. Matikan laptop dan cabut baterai laptop terlebih dahulu, gunakan obeng untuk membuka sekrup pengunci cover.
   
2. Setelah cover terbuka, kemudian tarik secara perlahan kabel berwarna merah-hitam yang melilit (lihat gambar dibawah), yang merupakan kabel penghubung baterai CMOS ke board laptop.
   
3. Berhubung konektor baterai CMOS sangat susah untuk dicabut (karena posisi yang berada di dalam board laptop, maka kita mengakali menggunakan pushpin.
   Sediakan 2 buah pushpin (pin tekan yang biasa untuk menempelkan kertas di papan pengumuman), kemudian selipkan masing-masing pushpin pada bagian negatif dan positip baterai CMOS yang terbungkus plastik (berwarna hijau).
   
   
4. Ambil sedikit kabel biasa (kabel serabut) dan hubungkan bagian jarum pushpin negatip ke jarum pushpin positip selama beberapa menit, sehingga terjadi short (korsleting) yang dampaknya akan me-reset konfigurasi BIOS/fingerprint.
5. Dan terakhir, cabut masing-masing pushpin dan kembalikan baterai CMOS ke posisi awal, dan tutup cover secara perlahan dan rapi, kemudian pasang baterai utama laptop. Coba nyalakan kembali laptop anda.

Battery disassembly

So I modded my laptop a bit yesterday – replaced the keyboard & touchpad with parts out of an identical broken portege. Sooo much nicer to type now.

And then I swapped my battery cos the original one was fried – the replacement isn’t much better – about half an hour battery life but oh well.

So here’s a photo of the old battery disassembled – I would try replacing the dead cells but I don’t think I can get lithium ion cells in NZ :S

Any ideas? (Short of buying a new laptop – cos that’s what I should really do, just need money first)

Update: I retreived the battery from the broken Portege and have been running unplugged for about an hour So now I’ve got a working battery – and a semi working backup. Still keen on ideas for reconditioning batteries though.

Toshiba no solo apuesta por ordenadores lígeros, sino que invierte también sus esfuerzos en conseguir ordenadores resistentes a golpes, vertidos de liquidos y mucho más, como bien representa el nuevo Tecra S5.

Toshiba on Tuesday launched a new ultraportable laptop that it claims is the world’s lightest, putting it in contention with vendors including Apple and Lenovo. The company said the full-featured Portégé R500-S5007V weighs just 2.4 pounds (1.08 kilograms), compared to Apple’s MacBook Air, which weighs 3 pounds, and Lenovo’s Thinkpad X300, which weighs around 2.93 pounds. The laptop measures 0.77 inches at its thinnest point, according to Toshiba. The company also claimed that the new laptop was the first to include a 128G-byte solid-state drive (SSD) to replace the hard drive. Laptops to date have had 64G bytes of storage, though both Lenovo and Apple provide 128G bytes of storage through two 64G-byte modules.

Battery life is also preserved by the laptop’s transreflective 12.1-inch screen, which can shut down the LED (light-emitting diode) backlighting by reflecting the sun’s rays to illuminate the screen, according to Toshiba. For US$2,999, users can get a laptop powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo U7700 processor at 1.33GHz, with 2M bytes of cache and 2G bytes of RAM. It will come with Windows Vista Business OS, which is also downgradable to Windows XP Professional. The laptop includes a SuperMulti optical drive that can read and rewrite DVD and CD media, wired and wireless 802.11 a/g/n networking, Bluetooth 2.0 support and built-in safety features to protect laptop data during falls. The Portégé R500-S5007V is a standard configuration, however, Toshiba offers similar configurations with a hard drive option, a company spokesperson said.
