Description (page 121)

If you are interested in any of these files then please contact the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick.

“The documents in this series were kept by two brothers, William Henry Street and John Ambrose Sherman Street, who were born in Burton, Sunbury County, the sons of Hon. Samuel Deny Street and Abigail Freeman. They were educated at public schools in Burton and Fredericton.

William Henry Street was born April 11, 1793. After completing his education, he engaged in the mercantile business in Saint John. He was twice mayor of Saint John (1835-1836 and 1848-1849) and served in the militia. In the General Election of 1842, he ran for Saint John City and, after protest, was awarded the seat. He sat until the dissolution of the House in 1846 when he retired from politics. W.H. Street was married twice: in 1824 to Mary Bruce, and in 1847 to Sarah Boyd Orr. He died in Saint John on April 4, 1875.

John Ambrose Sherman Street was born September 22, 1795. He studied in his father’s law office and was admitted to the New Brunswick Bar on February 22, 1817. He practiced law at Chatham, Northumberland County, and in 1823 married Jane Isabella Hubbard. He was elected to the Assembly as a Conservative member for Northumberland County at a by-election in 1833. He sat in the House almost continuously until his defeat in 1856. He then moved to Fredericton and unsuccessfully ran for York County in 1861 and 1865. He was made a member of the Executive Council in 1851, and served as Attorney-General until 1854. He died in 1865.

The Street Records pertain to the legal and business affairs of the brothers. The material is catalogued alphabetically according to client’s name. The types of documents found here include: indentures, deeds, declarations, bonds, assignments, correspondence, and leases. The material dates from 1812 to 1863. This series measures 9 centimeters.”

So, what’s on your Thanksgiving drink menu? Wine, perhaps? Or maybe Cider? Wait, did you say water?!

So, what’s on your Thanksgiving drink menu? Wine, perhaps? Or maybe Cider? Wait, did you say water?! That’s it—I submit beer as the holiday beverage of choice! Luckily, I’m here to provide pointers about pairing your holiday meal with the perfect beer.

Approach appetizers with a light-bodied beer that goes easy on the taste buds. Try an amber ale or a pilsner—Victory makes the outstanding Prima Pils, but a Sam Adams Boston Lager would do the trick. If you’re feeling particularly dangerous, try a Belgian pale ale like Orval or Duvel, or maybe a Bière de Garde like Jolly Pumpkin’s Bière De Mars. These bright, funky ales will keep the palate fresh while slicing through those first-course flavors. And if greens are on the menu, pick up New Belgium’s Frambozen Raspberry Brown Ale. Its tart, fruity finish works well with non-ranch salad dressings.

Pairing with a primary dish can go a few different ways. Assuming you’re eating turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, etc., a dark ale will serve you well. Consider a Belgian-style beer like Ommegang’s Rare Vos or, for the brave souls, a quadruple like Rochefort 10 or St. Bernardus Abt 12. Be careful; quads are extremely potent. Conversely, you could revisit lagers. These crisp beers make great palate cleansers, and German pilsners in particular complement poultry.

For dessert, milk stouts harmonize perfectly with chocolate. You can experiment with bolder stouts, too: Pour a glass of The Abyss or Stone’s Russian Imperial Stout after dishing out the pumpkin pie. Several other styles, including porters, lambics, and weizenbocks, also pair well with dessert; the estery flavors in lambics and weizenbocks go well with rich fruit pies, while a porter’s chocolate and coffee flavors speak for themselves.

After dinner, let your food settle while you sink into a warm armchair of inebriation with a barleywine or dopplebock. But remember, none of these guidelines are written in stone. Experiment! Get to know the styles and play with flavor combinations. And have a happy and beer-drenched Thanksgiving!

36 Weeks to 50

Wow!

Well for the past month, I have been on the adventure of my life. My husband Kevin and I travelled to Nepal to Trek to Everest and spend time with the girls we save from Contract Bonded labour. And all I can say is Nepal was not what I was expecting. After a 32 hour adventure of planes, trains and airports, we arrived in Kathmandu at 11pm on a Thursday night. Our good friend and NGO director Dinesh Sapkota picked us up at the airport and derived us to our hotel. We were up by 6am to get ready to leave for Lukla (the small village where you begin your trek to Everest)

The landing strip in Lukla is one of the shortest and highest altitude in the world. It is also the steepest, which helps because it’s the shortest. We hook up with our porter (the Man who will be carrying our bags) Jelging and away we go. Kevin, Dinesh, Wangchuk (our guide) and his brother Jelging (our porter). The 5 of us become fast friends.

Day 1-4 We hike through a very lush, green and garden laden part of the trip. It is beautiful and parts of it are very steep. Our last 3 hour up to Namche is pretty much straight up and we get our first glimpse of Everest from 2 different spots on the trail. We arrive at Namche about 3pm, ready for a beer or something. We are now at about 11,000 feet. What I can’t seem to get used to is the bodily function noises most of the Nepalese men make. Lots of snorting, and spitting. And lots of smells…

After dinner, we play cards for a while and hit the hay by 8pm.

We spend the next day doing a 600 meter day hike up and then back down to Namche to help with acclimatization.

Day 4 we hiked to a famous small little village where there is a large Monks Monastery. The first half of this hike was easy and the second half was again, pretty straight up. I am now starting to get headaches. And as we arrive, we find out they are preparing for a famous Monks festival. So we get to see some of the ceremonies. We stay in a VERY Modest (I’d say primitive) tea house. So I have to do lots of talking to myself to handle it. I even have a moment when I realize I am not as tough as one should be for a trip like this one. Ahhh, the Linda ‘princess syndrome’ is showing it’s face.

Day 5 Up at 6am, and off we go to climb another 500 meters to a small town called Dingbouche. I am starting to get headaches again. I take a short nap to try and get it to go away. We have tea and dinner and once again hit the hay by 8pm.

(here is where I feel we make our hiking mistake) We should have stayed one more night to acclimatize a bit better.

Day 6 I slept really well here. Kevin is still not sleeping. He has not slept for 5 nights now. They say you start to get crazy dreams when you are in high altitudes, I dreamt last night that Al Pachino was the master mind behind the 9-11 disaster. I think he needs to play a few more nice guy roles…

We hike up yet another 500 meters to Labouche. And once again the second half of the day was straight up. When I reach the top of this hard ridge, we are at the place where many memorials have been built to honour hikers and climbers who have died on these trails. And there are many. Kevin and I have a photo taken in front of Scott Fisher’s memorial. He is the expedition leader of the Everest Summit team that experienced so much tragedy back in 1996. The book “Into Thin Air” was written about that event.

Here is also when my “BAD” Altitude Sickness really kicks it up a notch. I am not doing so well now. As my head feels like it’s going to explode! And I mean literally. It’s like the worst red wine hangover you many have ever had. I guess that’s what they mean by swelling of the fluids on your brain.

Day 7 Kevin has been up since 2am, with diarrhea and vomiting. These are also part of the “Altitude Sickness” And to think we paid for this for our holidays. The temperature in our room is about -15 degrees Celsius. And the entire place we are staying in smells like an outhouse. It’s tough to say the least.

Up at 8am, and we decide to spend a few more hours seeing how we feel to try and make a decision on whether we should spend the day and try and acclimatize or go down. I leave this decision up to Kevin as this is his dream. So at around 10 am that morning, after Kevin reflected on helping a man into a helicopter the day before who was unconscious from Altitude Sickness, he decided we need to go down and try and get better. That was a long, cold, windy, and very silent day let me tell you.

More Everest and Nepal in my Next Instalment.

Linda

Akin to Guinness when Fuller’s is poured is offers a very dark almost black color, whose denser and heavier brew gives a very sweet aroma while poured. This ale is an excellent example of a porter style beer, the depth dark flavor, distinct foamy head make this beer one to remember. Honestly this isn’t a beer I would drink on a daily basis, it is simply too heavy for that and not intended to be, it is meant to be a beer that you sit around a pub or your mancave with “The Boys” watching a game.

Rating:
• Drinkability - 4 out of 5
• Flavor - 5 out of 5
• Refreshness - 3 out of 5
• Overall – 12 out of 15

Tasting Notes:

Pours nearly solid black with large brown head that sticks around for a long time, leaving great, sticky lacing around the glass. Smells of roasted malts, a hint of chocolate and coffee, and citrus-y hops as well. Tastes of malts and darker, non-sweet chocolate, and has a distinct bitterness from the hops. Very tasty. Crisp mouthfeel, slight carbonation which finishes nice and smooth, almost a smokey feel in your throat.
Drinkability:

Great beer, but definitely not meant for sessioning, even though I split 2 of these in one sitting. Great brew, gonna be sad to see it go when the season is over.

Until then, I will just enjoy this delicious beer.

(5% English make from 550 ml bottle) Wonderful full-bodied porter from one of the last remaining independent breweries in England – Samuel Smith. This gem was enjoyed from the bottle at The Rising Sun Pub in the Smithfield Market area within the City of London.

It is poured with a deep mahogany body with a smell of sweet roasted barley/malts. It has a delicious taste of vanilla and sweet roasted malt with a feel of creamy root beer on the tongue. Overall, this is a flavorful, well balanced porter that I would recommend above the Samuel Smith Extra Stout, which is enjoyable in its own right, but the complexity of the taste pushes the Taddy to the top.

So, the next time you are lucky enough to find a Samuel Smith pub in London, as they are cheap and usually brilliantly well-preserved Victorian pubs, go for the Taddy and relax enjoying a fine porter.

The term ‘porter’ is tied to the first consumers of this great London beer – the porters of this prosperous city in the 18th c were known to consume this dark beer in great quantities. It was ripe for production, as it was the first beer to be ready for sale upon arrival at the pub (aged at the brewery), and also good for bigger batches so they could produce it in great quantities.

Also, the porter is intrinsically tied to stout. The name stout is a shortened version of ’stout porter’ as stronger porters came to be called extra, strong, double, or stout porter. Eventually, in the mid 19th c the porter was dropped from the beginning, and stout porter took to being just stout. Porter saw much of production hampered here in the UK, when during WWI the grain shortages saw strong beers’ production decrease dramatically. However, in Ireland, there was more relaxed grain restrictions and they were able to lay claim over the porter and stout market (i.e. Guinness). During WWII production mostly ceased, until a resurgence of the brew came about and has been going strong now for about 30 years.

Yesterday was a rare day off for me and I figured it was about time I got my H1N1 protection. (“Just Say No” is not an option.) Then Soph and I found we had some mid-afternoon time free (that annoying time when it’s almost time for dinner, but definitely too early), so we went to the Victory hoping for some Durham Black IPA or Mill Street Roggenbier. It was a fail on both counts, so I opted to try the Nickel Brook Marzen, even though it is not a style that does much for me. It had a nice amber colour and decent caramel maltiness with a citrusy tang, but was disappointing compared to Soph’s Mike Duggan #9 IPA. I haven’t had many marzens, but it seemed to fall within the style.

Later, after a delicious Jamaican pumpkin roti, a delicious Fuller’s London Porter was all I needed before going out and dancing to some 90s music. A rich porter with tastes of chocolate and coffee, it manages to taste excellent while not feeling heavy or filling. Pretty much heaven in a can.

Back when I started this blog, someone asked if I would include ciders. While there is some commonality, I think of beer as a product of barley and hops, which excludes ciders from the conversation. So the cider I had while dancing does not count.

It started pouring so Brian and I took shelter under an overpass. The wind was cold so we made a small fire between the lanes.

A lady and her quiet mother stopped way down the road and reversed back to us, to our relief. We dashed through the downpour and hopped in. She recommended the llama ranch for work if the firefighting didn’t work out.

I wouldn’t recommend going to Merritt but I also wouldn’t miss the mad adventures I was thrust into there.

I brought team two up on comms, who had located the environmental controls to discover Arthree altering the controls, slowly returning pressure to the ship. They reported that the ship should return to standard atmosphere within the hour. Then a familiar voice interrupted our transmission.

“That’s nice and all, but we’re in a bit of a spot here Vance.” Crix’s statement resounded through the small sound emitter.

“Crix, Is that you? What’s your location?” The adrenaline that was beginning to fade kicked into overdrive once again. ” Where the hell have you been?”

“I’ll be happy to tell you all of that if you can get us out of here. Our cutting equipment and one of my men got sucked into the ship… through what looks like a fifteen centimeter hole. We did what we could to prevent further casualties.”

“We’re on the way then. By the way, you missed out on a great fight…. It just goes to show that they truly don’t make droids like they used to.” I smiled with the thought, and winced at the pain in my shoulder. Without looking, I knew the arm to be lost. It would never again use it with success. With today’s technology, I can get it replaced easy enough. Or I could just let it hang there, useless for the rest of my life. Knowing that I would let it fall off first before going to one of those hack job surgeons. No, you will not, you will be born anew, answered the dragon.

As we made our way down to the engine compartment, some of team two’s commandoes were already cutting Crix and Alpha team out of their would-be tomb. I stopped in my tracks as I rounded the corner to see the remains of a tech could be seen spread all over the engine room’s floor, and nearby walls. The gelatinous blobs looked as though the man had exploded, which wasn’t too far from the truth.
