The Orangeville Banner: Sideroads Magazine

I had the fantastic opportunity of designing the logo for Sideroads Magazine, which is a quarterly publication distributed by various south western newspapers under the Metroland Media family. The first edition of this magazine was released through The Orangeville Banner where I worked part-time. I also designed many of the article and story layouts and loved every minute of it! Receiving the copy and raw photograph files, developing my sketches and thumbnails, receiving feedback from my peers and presenting my concepts to the editor and publisher was an outstanding experience.

As part of R&R Printing’s quarterly direct mail campaign, each piece was given an adjective that described an important aspect of printed communication. This particular piece was titled “Success”.

* R&R Printing is a small but busy print (digital and press), graphic design and copy facility in Fergus Ontario. Having to compete with big box stores such as Staples, I was giving the task of creating a direct mail campaign that would be sent out quarterly to various businesses that could benefit from our services. Simple and cost effective in terms of material but vibrant, educational and unique in design – the response was excellent!

Book: Narratives on the Belfast Black Hack

One of my most prized accomplishments, this book is a small collection of different personal experiences, memories and encounters with Belfast’s Black Taxis. Each entry is a unique, emotional and inspirational piece provided by a real person. It displays locations, illustrations and photographs from within the city of Belfast, showing the area where each entry took place.

Typeface Design: Long Tall Sally

Designing a typeface is NOT easy. I would compare it to a that old “love-hate” relationship theme. I love typography but I am very particular about certain aspects as every designer is. To start a typeface from scratch is near impossible because you keep revisiting every change. In the end, i got there and Long Tall Sally was born! A great design experience.

VIQUA: IHS Dealer Reference Tabbed Booklet

The VIQUA Sales Department requested a simple, straight forward, effective and impressive reference tool that stood out from the typical product brochures that bombard their dealers when a new product is released. In partnership with Marketing, Engineering and Purchasing Departments, I designed this tabbed reference booklet which outlined every aspect of the product with a quick flick of the thumb.

VIQUA: Sterilight Brochure

Just one of several brochures that I re-designed, The Sterilight product line was geared towards a “no fuss” consumer type. With this aspect in mind,the marketing team selected a vibrant cyan to accent all Sterilight material to evoke a fresh and pure quality that consumers would associate with clean water and reliability.

A part of my job as VIQUA’s graphic designer was maintaining brand integrity. This corporate brochure was designed based on existing attributes. I had the opportunity to deal with various translators from Norway to China, flowing different languages into various VIQUA marketing pieces.

R&R Printing: Non-profit book

A local animal lover came to R&R wanting to put together a coffee table type book displaying their photography and in-depth knowledge of the many animals that live along the Grand River. After developing a style guide and typographic theme, certain photographs were selected, re-touched and the book was prepped for print. I most enjoyed designing the book’s cover.
