This professional portfolio has been designed to display the accomplishments I have made, as well as the thoughts and feelings I have towards education.

Lighting design was another area I explored during college the following are pictures from an all student run production of The Mikado that I reference in my personal statement.

The following images are from lighting designs I created for an Evening of Dance, which is the student designed, student choreographed dance show.

This piece was a combination video and live action piece.

This piece was entitled Rainbow Bridge, and was choreographed by Caitlin Garwood. Unfortunately it’s not represented in the shots, because we couldn’t keep the fog around long enough, but one of the fun side projects of designing this piece was building a homemade chiller for the fog machine in order to create a pool of fog surrounding the fabric entrance to the space.

The Hershey’s Kisses logo has hidden negative space much like the FedEx logo. In between the K and I there is a shape that looks like another Hershey’s Kiss.

Today when I went outside to look for things to photograph, I wasn’t inspired by anything. Earlier this week my mom told me about another logo with cool negative space. It was the Hershey’s Kisses logo. We went to the supermarket and found a stack of holiday Hershey’s Kisses. I took some pictures and then my mom let me buy some; they were tasty.

Today after I took my picture I was wondering, “Will I run out of ideas before the 50 days are over? And if I do what will happen?” I really hope that doesn’t happen.

My scene design experience started when I became a carpenter for the department the second semester of my freshmen year. I continued to learn more about scenic design through my work as scenic carpenter, in Stagecraft and Advanced Stagecraft, Scenic Painting, Scene Design, and Direction classes. During college I had two realized scenic designs, for clarity’s sake I will focus on explaining how one of them, my realized design As Bees in Honey Drown relates to my goals at Interactive Technology Program.

As the scene designer for this production, my responsibilities were to create an environment that could accommodate quick cinematic transitions and support the overall theme of the corrupting influence of celebrity. My design choice was to create a world that operated entirely on the principle of “buzz.” I did this by creating a cityscape that had many moving parts and pieces that would open, close, fly, slide, and rotate to clear space for hidden acting areas, along with two projection screens that would alternately suggest various locations or provide additional background or information to suggest to the audience. I was also responsible for working out the technical details and requirements of the projectors, their placement, and control.

In the following ground plan you can see the stage right swinging doors, the moving limo seat, the sliding bench and the rotating desk that allowed characters to rapidly move from area to area along the bottom of the set.

I’ve chosen to show you this design because it emphasizes the technical bent of my design process in college. This was a great design to work on, because the script was written for a different type of space and I got to use all of my technical ingeuity to try and solve the problems inherent in the fast moving pace of the script and scene transitions. I also got to test my technical skills and create and troubleshoot a projection design, including some tricky video playback for the limo scene. By using a variety of surprising openings and closings, I tried to give the audience the same sense of whirlwind motion and surprise that carries Evan Wyler, the main character, through his journey into fame. Projections design gave me the oppurtunity to not only set location but provide imagery that related to the emotional core of the scene. I have developed twelve digital typefaces, some full character sets and others with limited sets for project specific applications. A solid knowledge of both readability and legibility issues are necessary in the creation of experimental typographic forms, hand drawn lettering, illustrative typographic applications, and font creation.

This portfolio has been specifically edited to represent my typographic experience. There are examples of: graduate studies / publication design / type design / font development / educational resources / + type dominant projects.
