# make config-recursive install clean

make
/usr/ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk

Little did I know what an interesting and charming place Halifax, Nova Scotia would be. Besides knowing the name, I was ignorant about the place, which made it all the more entertaining when the Carnival Triumph slid into Halifax Harbor.

Georges Island, Halifax Harbor, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

As we passed an island that had a lighthouse and lighthouse keepers house, it appeared to have no people. I had to look it up on Wikipedia after I got back to Columbus, Georgia, my home town, to learn about it. Indeed, there is no one on Georges island. The lighthouse has been automated since the 1970’s. The Canadian government is working on turning it into a tourist attraction. After all, it has a historical fort, from which a shot was never fired in anger.

Only having a few hours to explore Halifax, we took a tour of the city on a London double-decker bus. We saw a beautiful, clean town. We stopped at a fort that is open to the puiblic, Fort George, which dates back to the 1700’s. A cannon is fired at noon every day for the tourists. Halifax has never been attacked. But it had the two forts in case France, or, later, the United States decided to do it. The Fort is now a park.

We got off the bus at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. If you ever get to Halifax, don’t miss it. you’ll learn a lot about the area’s history. Not only does it have a Titanic exhibit – survivors of the sinking were taken to Halifax, and a lot of those whose drowned bodies were recovered are buried in a Halifax cemetary – but it has have exhibits that explain that Halifax was a very important port in both World War I and II. Because it is a protected harbor that was safe from German submarines, it was the staging area for the convoys that took supplies to the United Kingdom in both wars.

Entrance to Halifax explosion of 1917 in Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Halifax, NS

The French also used the harbor in World War I, which led to a colossal disaster. It was and still is the largest accidental man-made explosion in the world. I learned about it while visiting the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. On December 6, 1917, SS Mont-Blac, a French cargo ship loaded with explosives destined to France, collided with the empty Norwegian SS Imo. The Mont-Blanc caught on fire, drifted close to shore, and exploded, destroying structures , killing 2,000 people and injuring 8,000. The explosion caused a tsunami in the harbor and a pressure air wave that demolished more buildings, grounded ships and carried fragments from the Mont Blanc for miles. I had never heard of it before.

1930 Snipe, a racing sailboat similiar to one I owned and raced, though this one is a lot older

I found the racing sailboat exhibit especially interesting because it sported a 1930 Snipe. I owned and raced a couple of Snipes for a number of years. One was destroyed by a tornado at Lake Harding, which is north of Columbus, on a Christmas day in the 1970’s. But that’s another story. Back to Halifax.

Having a 3-year-old friend who loves Thomas the Train, I found the exhibit about Canada’s answer to Thomas interesting. The television program about Theodore the Tugboat was produced in Halifax and aired on the Canadian Broadcasting Company. Kids love it, and still enjoy the re-runs and DVDs. The actual real Theodore the Tugboat used for the show was docked nearby. The model used for the annimated show, which is shown in the inset, is displayed in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

Halifax is the largest Canadian city east of Montreal and is the capital of Nova Scotia. Like Columbus, the economy gets a boost from the military; however it’s the Canadian Navy not Army, and Halifax is home of Canada’s Atlantic fleet. The Canadian Navy is not very large, only 33 ships. And though there are less than ten-thousand people employed by the naval base, Halifax’s economy is stronger than Columbus‘, with the median household income of more than $55 thousand. Columbus has a median household income of almost $40 thousand. Halifax is a very busy port, the fourth busiest in Canada, and there are a lot of government service jobs there since it is the province’s capital.

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada as seen from the Carnival Triumph cruise ship's dock All in all, we enjoyed Halifax. For one thing, we found a great Irish pub there where we had wonderful seafood chowder for lunch. Being the last stop, that should end this series of posts, but the trip back to New York had a little excitement. That will be the Cool Cruise finale.

Lately, I’ve been playing around with Mac OS X Snow Leopard in a virtual machine. Hey, you have to try it before you diss it!

I’ll save my overall review for later, but I just wanted to get this out to everyone: MacPorts? It’s no hack. In fact, it can rival or beat most major ports implementations.

For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about in terms of ‘ports’, it’s a generic name for a system that allows a user to rapidly download and install software from source.

While I originally thought MacPorts would be very hackish, at least compared to FreeBSD ports or even Gentoo’s Portage, the opposite may be true. MacPorts is slick, smooth, reliable, has a very well chosen set of shell commands and options, and is in general excellent in nearly every way. It excels at the one problem I’ve always had with ports systems — it is very hard to think out every angle for such a system, but MacPorts seems to do so almost completely. So, everyone interested in making their own ports system? Go try MacPorts, and learn from its awesomeness.

More info when I do a full OS X review!

I have used the ports collection to install JBoss 5.1 on my FreeBSD 7.2 Box. The installation went w

I have used the ports collection to install JBoss 5.1 on my FreeBSD 7.2 Box. The installation went well and as usual, the ports installation process did all the downloading and compiling of the package and its dependencies.

After installation, I need to test it to start developing. So I did a command to start it

/usr/local/jboss5/bin/run.sh

All works well and JBoss starts. I opened a browser in my local machine and visited http://127.0.0.1:8080 and the JBoss start page is loaded.

Next thing I have to do is to access JBoss on a different machine.

I then used my netbook to access http://192.168.0.***:8080 to my surprise, I didn’t get a response and an error message was displayed in my browser. I then searched the web for an answer. After a couple of links I was able to get an answer. I need to start JBoss with the option -b 0.0.0.0 supplied to the script run.sh. By default JBoss is binded to 127.0.0.1, meaning only the local machine can access it. So I have to find a way to start JBoss passed with that option.

Here are the steps to make JBoss automatically started on boot:
1. Add these lines at the end of /etc/rc.conf

jboss5_enable="YES"
jboss5_flags="-Djboss.bind.address=0.0.0.0"

2. The default jboss5 script in the /usr/local/etc/rc.d directory does not work with -b 0.0.0.0. Therefore, you have to replace it by the /usr/local/jboss5/bin/run.sh script. After replacing it, the “start” “stop” and “restart” options does not work with the script, but if you want to, you are free to edit the script to include it.

mv /usr/local/etc/rc.d/jboss5 /usr/local/etc/rc.d/jboss5-original-script

cp /usr/local/jboss5/bin/run.sh /usr/local/etc/rc.d/jboss5

3. Create a bin directory at the /usr/local/etc/

mkdir /usr/local/etc/bin

4. Make a symlink for /usr/local/jboss5/bin/run.jar inside /usr/local/etc/bin

ln -s /usr/local/jboss5/bin/run.jar /usr/local/etc/bin/jbossrun.jar

5. Edit /usr/local/etc/rc.d/jboss5 so that jbossrun.jar will be the file needed to start it

vi /usr/local/etc/rc.d/jboss5

6. Find the line runjar=”$JBOSS_HOME/bin/run.jar” and replace it with runjar=/usr/local/etc/bin/jbossrun.jar

7. Run jboss by using (this does not include the start, restart, and stop options, again if you want to, you are free to edit the script to fit your needs)

/usr/local/etc/rc.d/jboss5

8. On your next restart of FreeBSD, JBoss will start and will be accessible to other machines.

Enjoy!

We got together with my friends travel agent again last night, we had dinner in an Italian restaurant and enjoyed the evening very much. He is a really nice person and very professional. Last night we felt as if we were taking advantage from him as we bombarded him with many more questions. Do you recall that my friends will be going in a cruise for holidays? they got this cruise as a prize in a contest they participate in. As it is a prize, they have no choice but to take the cruise they gave them but all of us wanted to know the type of things we have to look for in order to get a good cruise deal in the future and here is what he advised:

1. Shop around he said, everyone is selling cruises right now, from Wal-Mart, Costco, travel agents who specializes in cruises, the travelling section of your Sunday newspaper, check what memberships might give you a discount, talk to friends and find out how they booked their last cruise.

2. Attention to the amount of time you will spend in each port; if you are excited about a particular place you will visit, check the time that the cruise will spend visiting, think of changing your dinner time if applies in order for you not to rush back to the cruise and be able to enjoy that magic place.

3.Consider travelling in off season; there a lots of cruise bargains out there and you will be able to avoid crowds. September through the beginning of December are generally slow times as well as the first 2 weeks in Janurary through June ( except for Easter week).

“I read it the same way I read fanboys,” he added. “Like there’s a guy who bought the Sony platform and he’s a Sony guy, so he decides he’s going to spend a certain percentage of his time bashing Microsoft. And there’s a guy on Microsoft doing the same thing. Those guys are childish and narrow minded; It’s the same kind of thing.”
