Let’s face it…there are many a mathy post-rock band making awkward melodies at the present time. But i don’t personally see this as a bad thing, so long as one sorts the wheat from the more abundant chaff. In these terms, Hreda would be some tasty cous-cous….but i can’t see that analogy going much further.
Hreda are a self-proclaimed “Doom Pop” trio hailing from Oxford, UK, known for many a mathy export including This Town Needs Guns and The Edmund Fitzgerald. This 7″ sees the band ditch the cello that was featured on previous recordings in favour of a less cinematic, though no less grandiose sound. Duelling guitars create frenetic soundscapes held solidly together by the steadfast, driving rhythms of drummer Russ.

Review of Austin duo Damage Pants’ self titled album should be up soon enough, but until then here’s a taste of the band’s insanity.

Austin has cornered the market on indie and bluesy music, but the harder genres often get shoved into obscurity because of lack of venue cooperation and fan-base. Hopefully these guys stick it out; they aren’t as refined as Drive Like Jehu and artists in the same vein, but for a first release, they’re promising great (drunken, stupid, loud) things.

When just a little encouragement was needed, just a little would be good enough. Bummer.

I’ll just try and hope to look at the bright side, that place rejoiced once today, for all I know. Who knows, it might have been more than just once. =)

Provavelmente, o melhor álbum do género.

Primo post dedicato alla musica dalle nostre zone, la Romagna. In particolare questo disco viene da Forlì, che musicalmente parlando è probabilmente una delle città più fertili in Italia.

I Venezia erano (purtroppo) un gruppo completamente strumentale e decisamente originale. Lo stile musicale è classificabile come math-rock, si rifanno sicuramente allo stile proposto dell’etichetta americana Touch & Go negli anni 90, ma anche a band più moderne (un nome su tutti: Tera Melos). Tuttavia il pregio di questi pezzi è di suonare freschi e soprattutto sinceri e non artefatti, nonostante la complessità di alcune parti.

È un peccato che si siano sciolti, ma è ancora di più un peccato che questo disco non sia ascoltato, per cui accaparratevelo.

Dirty Three – Ocean Songs (1998)

Dirty Three to trójka facetów z Australii. I zaprawdę powiadam wam, że chyba rzeczywiście całkiem niegrzeczne z nich trio. Czym wzbudzają podejrzenia ? Ano tym, że z elementów przerażająco wręcz mało oryginalnych, potrafią wykrzesać iskierkę magicznej wręcz osobliwości, skromną, a jednocześnie zdolną do samodzielnego rozniecania zaskakująco dużej ilości ciepła. Podążając tym razem za wikipedyczną notą, której autorom zdarza się, czasem całkiem trafnie, wyliczyć takie rzeczy za nas: „The Dirty Three’s sound is distinctive, composed of folk melody, rock energy, elements of classical, chamber music, jazz and blues, Celtic, and other European folk styles – a diverse collection of influences, though the style of music the trio play is uniquely their own, born from years of musical experience”. Wyrwałem to z ogólnego kontekstu, także przynajmniej posilę się na małe sprostowanie. To nie jest śpiewający po celtycku potworek z głową Queen, korpusem jakiejś Apocalyptiki i kończynami w postaci wachlarzy zespołów pieśni ludowej (w ogóle „pieśń ludowa” => jak dla mnie równie obrzydliwe skojarzenia co ze słowem „pulpet”), ale takich koszmarów, to i tak chyba nikt się nie spodziewał.  Zapomnijcie w ogóle raczej o patosie, udręczonym wypruwaniu flaków w duchu romantyzmu,  o epickich, rubikowskich aranżacjach, jak i o zwieszonych głowach w pozycji krzesełkowej.  Chłopaki co prawda czerpią garściami z wymienianych na wstępie stylów, ale nie popadają przy tym w żaden niestrawny eklektyzm, czy też przesadne barokowe wylewności, jak już w ten sposób porównujemy. Linie melodyczne, elementy artworku i ogólna aura faktycznie przywołują na myśl muzykę celtycką i szeroko rozumiany folk. Bez tego muzyka Dirty Three nie miałaby racji bytu, choć z drugiej strony nie jest to aspekt aż tak bliski meritum sprawy. Wpływ jazzu natomiast słyszymy w sumie przede wszystkim we wspaniałej technicznie grze perkusisty Jima White’a, jedynego przedstawiciela sekcji rytmicznej w zespole, a paradoksalnie zresztą rzadko po stałą rytmikę sięgającego. Podobnie zresztą sprawa tyczy się Micka Turnera. Przy użyciu gitary elektrycznej czasem dodaje tej sunącej się z wolna muzyce nieco ekspresywnej energii. Tyle że jego gra również wydaje się zbyt mętna i niesprecyzowana, żeby utrzymać ciężar, jakim jest w wypadku tego swoistego minimalizmu, utrzymanie odbiorcy w zainteresowaniu. Kluczem do całości i najważniejsza rola przypada więc skrzypcom. To właśnie ta emocjonalna bomba łączy wszystko w jedną spójną całość. I tutaj warto się na chwilę zatrzymać.

Smyczek Warrena nie rozpościera się wyłącznie między instrumentem a dłonią. Przestrzeń ta obejmuje całe ciało muzyka. Ellis, scena i skrzypce to narządy tworzące jednorodny organizm, odpowiadające w odpowiednich proporcjach za całościową ekspresję. System taki wydaje się być dość oczywisty i powszechny, w wypadku jednak tak kameralnej, oszczędnej w aspekcie instrumentarium muzyki, częściej go chyba zwyczajnie nie ma niż jest, albo kiedy już naprawdę mamy pecha, funkcjonuje podobnie jak nasz rząd. Czyli że ciężko uwierzyć, że to wszystko dzieje się naprawdę. Z drugiej strony zabierzcie brodaczowi instrument, wytnijcie dźwięk, zostawcie samego Ellisa, a i tak wciąż będziecie wiedzieć co właśnie wyraża. Trudno szukać tutaj jednak silenia się na jakieś (swoją drogą zawsze ocierające się choć trochę o tandetę) próby transformacji muzyki w przedstawienie teatralne. Oglądając występy Dirty Three bierzemy udział w czymś zupełnie mechanicznym. Wyrazistość Warrena absolutnie nie wyrasta z żałosnej celowości zachowań, zwykłej pokazówki typu „ej, zobaczcie jak bardzo nasza muzyka rozedrgana jest emocjonalnie”, czy szpanerskiego „zerknijcie tylko jaki jestem wczuty”. Za wszelką cenę chciałem tego uniknąć, ale na usta ciśnie się tylko banalny frazes: ta muzyka zwyczajnie żyje. Niezbyt wyszukane spostrzeżenie, ale to właśnie odsłuch takiego Ocean Songs prowadzi do tej konkluzji bardziej niż obcowanie z większością wydawnictw jakie mieliście okazję słyszeć. Zaręczam. I nawet nie traktujmy tego jako komplementu, bo “życie” to w końcu tylko fakt, nie zawsze potencjalna zaleta. Naturalnie jednak pojawia się zobowiązanie, które wymaga od słuchacza zaangażowania trochę innych, niż tylko tych bijących analitycznym chłodem, obszarów mózgownicy. Element zawahania pojawia się gdy staniecie na rozdrożu dwóch i wyłącznie dwóch dróg – albo kupujecie cały pakiet albo do widzenia. Proste. Żadnych półśrodków, bo to naprawdę nie jest wypełniacz czasu w postaci muzyki tła. Tylko proszę, nie róbcie żadnych głupstw, bo nietrudno jest zakłócić ten dwukierunkowy przepływ intymności.

Poniżej ostateczny argument. Takie rzeczy budzą we mnie sentymentalne skłonności. I nie potrzebują chyba zresztą żadnego komentarza.

I’m going to be the first to say that I’ve never really been big on the whole alt-rock, indie (for lack of a better phrase) ’scene’ and Biffy Clyro, as long as they’ve been in my mind (which is some considerable time thanks to the album cover for The Vertigo of Bliss), have never really grabbed me until recent months and the release of Only Revolutions provoked my interest enough for me to give a hoot.

I must say, I’ve been a big fan of recent singles ‘Mountains’ and ‘That Golden Rule’, however, with the release of the new single ‘The Captain’, my fan status has been revoked back to murder status. Unfortunately for me/everyone, said single is the opener on Only Revolutions. Now I’m going to let you in on what’s probably no secret and that is, I am a fairly angry man. I was lucky enough to be walking along when I heard this track so luckily there was nothing to hand to smash to pieces, I nearly killed someone who looked at me funny but I stopped myself. Anyway, ‘The Captain’ is like Scouting For Girls, it’s not lyrically terrible but musically frustrating. I guess they must have just got fed up of having NO money.

Anyway, rage aside, the following 11 songs are fantastic, which makes ‘The Captain’ such a strange inclusion on an otherwise flawless album. Stand out tracks like ‘God & Satan’, an excellent acoustic number and tracks like ‘Shock Shock’ and ‘Bubbles’ have some great musical ideas going on with the latter having a build up/breakdown that most bands could only ever dream about.

Simon Neil’s vocals are excellently heartfelt and harsh in equal doses and the album seems a very much personal affair. It’s worth noting that the album name is based on the book of the same name by author Mark Z. Danielewski (I frigging love/loathe The House of Leaves) which is a book on changes and intertwining lives through history, seen via the eyes of two characters; it’s a very personal affair and something which is reflected in this release.

Only Revolutions will win many new Biffy Clyro fans and doesn’t deviate so sharply as to alienate the older ones and good for them, but if they release another song like ‘The Captain’ I’m going to have to kill EVERYONE.

Little late on this one, but the Beijing underground music scene is getting a lot of attention in the U.S. press lately. Carsick Cars, along with Xiao He and P.K. 14, are actually finishing up a tour tonight in the U.S. For those of you who frequent Beijing, check out the club D-22 in Wudaokou. The video is Carsick Cars performing their hit, Zhong Nan Hai (apparently referring to the cigarettes, not the place…抽烟的抽)

So, Happy Songs for Happy People. Ever heard it? If not, stop reading and go buy it. The first track, alone, is worth the purchase and worth my writing.

“Hunted by a Freak” may go down as one the best instrumentals of the decade. Yes, there is a guy singing into a crazy vocal box thing, but the lyrics are indecipherable and a thing of internet legend. The pure style this album oozes fills your ears like wax, and is just as sticky. Before listening to Mogwai I thought this type of music was ultimately unfulfillable and unable to compete with the musical world, given the lack of lyrics and free-form wankery that throbs throughout. Knowing what I know now, and seeing what I’ve seen live, I take it all back.

Honestly, this album is not amazing. I know, I know, I told you to buy it already.

It has a few excellent songs, and when you hear “Killing all the Flies” live and the sudden orgasm of clusterfucked chords warbles through their amps and into the sky, your life may very well change. Coachella provided the space and environment for these guys to really show the power of this style and I thank Jebus they did.

Mogwai really strikes that happy medium for me that bands like Sigur Ros and Appleseed Cast just can’t seem to get to: ambiance with power. I enjoy all the post-rock shoegazing you can throw at me, but if there isn’t a release of that emotion, it feels wasted. With Mogwai, I know that when a track starts off slow, that it’s going to get somewhere and tell me a story. A story without words. That’s pretty awesome.

Old Pride

Earlier today, I was notified by a friend on last.fm that Pianos Become The Teeth might be playing a show in Columbus in January. I quickly made my way to their MySpace page where my highest hopes were sort of confirmed. While nothing has been finalized yet, I am incredibly excited for this show, especially since there is a rumored Max Levine Ensemble show planned in Columbus for a few days later.

Pianos Become The Teeth is a band from Maryland who recently signed to Topshelf Records (My Heart To Joy, Defeater). They’re an emo band who tint their sound with a lot of ambiance and beautiful soundscapes, not unlike Suis La Lune or Raein. While comparing a band to Raein might set the bar a little high, I think the energy the two bands put out are comparable. Since I’m seeing both bands live within a few weeks of each other, it’ll be interesting to see how the sounds and energy of both bands translate to live performances. Although both albums are full of excellent songs, one major standout is “Houses We Die In” off of Saltwater. The vocals sound so emotionally strained, mixed in with the mid-tempo, post-rock influenced music, that you can’t help but feel some kind of emotion. As I stated before, I’m incredibly excited to see this band live if their show does happen, and if it doesn’t happen in Columbus, I’ll probably travel to see it.

Gestern gastierte die dänische Band Efterklang im Ballhof Eins.

Ric, eine gemeinsame Freundin und ich genossen den »orchestralem Pop« (indiepedia) der Dänen, der in seiner ergreifend, energiereichen Form sich in einem Klanggebilde aus heiterer Schwermut zeigte und es uns zeitweise schwer machte uns nicht von unserem Sitzplätzen zu erheben, zu tanzen.

Letzlich konnten weder wir, noch einige andere Zuhörer an uns halten und folgten der Aufforderung des charismatischen  Sängers Casper Clausen bereitwillig, um  unmittelbar vor den Instrumenten der sechsköpfigen Gruppe zu tanzen, während jene den letzten Song ihrer Zugabe spielten.

Tatsächlich erlaubte die eher konzertoritentierte Aufführung, der unter dem Namen Ballklang einen treffenden Namen gegeben war, ein aufmerksames Beobachten und ein intensives Hörerlebnis, dessen Klangwelt mich von erster Minute an fort zu tragen wusste.

Infolgedessen hinterlässt mich  dieser Abend in einem Zwiespalt, denn Bewegungsfreiheit wäre angesichts der emmotialen Intensität, welche die Musik transportiere durchaus auch wünschenswert gewesen.

Mads Brauer, Caspar Clausen und Rasmus Stolberg wuchsen auf der Insel Als auf und zogen im Jahr 2000 nach Kopenhagen,wo sie noch in jenem Jahr ihre Band gründeten.  Zwei Alben folgten in den Jahren 2004 und 2007. Ein weiteres,  wie Sänger Clausen gestern verlauten ließ,  soll im kommenden Jahr erhältlich sein und Magic Chairs lauten.

Wir hatten gestern das Vergnügen zahlreiche neue Songs zu hören, die auf Magic Chairs enthalten sein werden. I Was Playing Drums und Mirror, Mirror sind mir neben Full Moon nachhaltig in Erinnerung geblieben.

Ferner hatte die Band die Ehre mit dem The Danish National Chamber Orchestra dem gemeinsamen Projekt Performing Parades neuen Klang und Raum zu verliehen. Mike Driver, Musikjournalist des BBC, urteilte knapp:  »Prepare to be left breathless«. Der Song Cutting Ice To Snow, der auch gestern zu hören war, klingt unter Mitwirkung des Orchesters wie folgt:

Das WebTV-Magazin wenn’s rockt! hält neben einen Interview mit Caspar und Federik auch einen Mittschnitt des Auftritts in Leipzig bereit, der einen Eindruck der Wirkung der Auftritte Efterklangs vermittelt.

Anders  als die Spekatakel einer alten Hutschachtel so manch anderer vermeintlicher Ikonen des Pop-Geschäfts, wissen allein die Musik und das Spiel von sechs Künstlern eine kleine Gruppe von Zuhören zu berühren.

Efterklang befindet sich derzeit noch auf Tour durch Deutschland. Heute  Abend treten die Däne in Osanabrück auf.

It’s been a while, but good things come to those who wait. Hailing from opposite ends of Australia, Perth’s Tangled Thoughts of Leaving and Sydney’s sleepmakeswaves are proud to present you with a shiny new split LP. It’s a record from two bands that are very different yet one that finds an equilibrium between the seemingly disparate tendencies of the two groups. Although both bands find common ground in their latent electronic influences, sleepmakeswaves marry these ideas to their characteristic brand of energetic and uplifting instrumental rock while Tangled Thoughts of Leaving pursue a relentlessly improvisatory, innovative path. Warren Ellis loves music! People, not so much

This was news to me, but apparently when Warren Ellis isn’t lovingly insulting half the world on Twitter or writing some of the most acclaimed comics of the past two decades (Astonishing X-Men, Planetary, Transmetropolitan, The Authority, Stormwatch, etc.), he’s critiquing relatively unknown music for the benefit of the greater blogosphere.

For anyone who’s initiated in any way to Ellis’s writing (notorious for meticulously layered plots, course dialogue and biting social commentary), it comes as no surprise that he would have just as strong opinions on music in 2009 as he does on everything else he writes about.

In his latest blog post, some highlights he discusses include Zola Jesus (“a beautiful ghost moaning from the shadows of a bombed-out cathedral”), High Wolf (“wet lo-fi tropical dreamstates”), British Sea Power (“the best piece of classical building/soaring postrock I’ve heard since ‘Raise Yr Skinny Fists.’ I mean, flat fucking out…”) and Gary War (“A gorgeous gurgling gargoyle of a thing”).

Sometimes it’s just cool to know that a 40+ year-old misanthrope — who introduced you to higher science fiction and colored your opinions of establishment politics — digs some of the same genres of music.

To ape Ellis’s own words and his tendency to close with brevity: “It is really bloody good, yes.”

stereogumのサイトでghost colonyって曲をふらっと聴いてたらズシンときました。こんな感覚ひさしぶり。脳にくるような。すーごいかっこいい。
ギター、ベース、ドラム/キーボード。サンディエゴの3人組。
snowcloneというところから少数の作品を3つ出して、その後Lefseからカセット、7インチ、そしてこの11月にデビューアルバム、だそう。またこのタイトルがなあ…ほんとghostって言葉すきだな。あこがれかな。
聴いてノックアウトされたghost colonyは不穏な空気と重さが出ている曲だけど、ほかのはほんのりポップでほんのりサイケデリックなのがおおい。この差はなんだろう。どちらの音もかなり好み。紹介されているところによってはlo-fiからhi-fiまでってことで”mid-fi”なんて表現もでてきてたり。myspaceの影響を受けたアーティストの欄を見ると「the microphones, my bloody valentine, mew, dinosaur jr., sonic youth, pumpkins, sebadoh, deerhoof」となっていて、よく表れているような。マイクロフォンズがいちばん最初に書いてあるあたりがまたなんか。つながりはよくわからないけどOn My Honorって曲をletting up despite great faultsがremixもしていて、オフィシャルでダウンロードできます。ポップです。

Zjawiskowa i tajemnicza muzyka z Islandii – Sigur Ros.

Myślę, że nie da się jednoznacznie określić ich stylu. Zespół słynie z falsetowego głosu wokalisty, a także z wykonywania utworów głównie w swoim ojczystym języku – islandzkim. Dla niektórych będzie to pewnie tylko “miałczenie”, ale dla mnie jest to coś więcej…
