Gig Poster – roots and wings

I found a few gig posters that we had done for a local venue last year. These were not just web designs for myspace or facebook … they were actually printed as well. We can print these digitally on nice quality poster paper … not just copier paper. The files can be any kind of files … this one one was done with all vector files. You can check out the flickr (just click the pic) for other examples of raster files. We can print 11 X17 to movie poster size and we print small quantities. Just remember with smaller quantities come higher prices per piece. Plus usually there is an art charge for poster stuff.

Dos de las mejores cartas de presentación para que un film llame la atención del público son su trailer y el poster. En lo que respecta al segundo me estoy empezando a preocupar sobremanera viendo los últimos trabajos realizados.
Comencemos con la esperada “Avatar”. Si no supiera que está dirigida por James Cameron, que ha costado la burrada que dicen y que revolucionará (supuestamente) el cine dudo mucho que gastara mi dinero en verla con un cartel tan horrendo como este:

Photoshop a más no poder, diseño manido hasta la saciedad con los rostros de los dos personajes principales a cada lado y en medio un bonito fondo que represente el Mundo de Pandora. Si bien es cierto que por lo general los posters de las cintas de Cameron no llegan a ser memorables (siempre me quedaré con el de Terminator 2, con esa pose y la Harley), lo del presente poster de “Avatar” clama al cielo, hasta el punto de convertir a cualquier portada de una cinta destinada directamente a DVD en Obra de Arte.

Mejor no lo tiene la nueva cinta protagonizada por Robert De Niro y que, como supondréis lo que me conocéis, estoy deseando ver. La cinta en cuestión es un remake del film dirigido por Giuseppe Tornatore e interpretado por Marcello Mastroianni en 1990 con idéntico título. Según las criticas que nos llegan del otro lado del charco la nueva versión es de lo más simplona aunque cuenta con una más que notable interpretación de De Niro (qué ganas de comprobarlo y dar gracias por ello). Bueno, al tema, si no fuera por De Niro dudo mucho que pisara el cine, y es que con un poster como el que sigue…

… nadie en su sano juicio apostaría por una cinta cómo esta. Sam Rockwell, Drew Barrymore y Kate Beckinsale unidos medianamente bien para portada de DVD, pero parece que al diseñador del cartel se le olvidó meter a Bobby y lo resolvió al final de manera desastrosa. Otro horro de poster.

Atrás han quedado tiempos dorados de carteleras que llamaban la atención y empujaba a la gente al cine, tiempos donde la cartelería cinematográfica era un arte elaborado por nombres como Alvin o Struzan. Ahora manda el ordenador con resultados como los presentes. Una pena.

This weekend we’ll be in Faenza. We’ll be at MEI fest, the meeting of the so called Independent labels.
We’ll have the new MEI posters and some other candies, hope to see a lot of friends around.
Well, it’s just so to speak cause, as You’ll surely know, we don’t have friends. People hate us cause we do Art prints of our own art.
So the first M is for MEI.

The second one is for MELVINS.
One of the best bands on this Planet will play in Milano next wednesday and we’ve finished today the printing of the poster.
This is the first colour, a very out of focus silver ink. It’s out of focus only on the photo, don’t worry.
Getting older means trembling much more.

I know this picture is not the best one, You’re always hitting me where it hurts…
After silver we’ve a wonderful copper red metallic ink.

This one is a little better. Hope You’ll feel ok with this picture.
Then we thought something was missing on the poster and we add a third colour. It’s a sort of dirty silverish gold, we call this colour “merdolino” that could be translated with something sounding like “light coloured poo”… well, maybe it’s better not to think about it too much…

We got the idea of this poster in San Francisco, I remember we started in drawing it at Chuck’s home.
We miss San Francisco a lot, Chuck and F***ing Gamboa uber alles.
Ok, now that we’re all touched by all this sugar, let’s see some other pics of the poster together.

Like people say in Milano: “TAC” (that is for “done it”) …

   Today was one of those days that just happened. You know the type of day I mean, when nothing really happened !! Everything went without a hitch. I got all the jobs done that I had to do, with time to spare, and even had chance to write up by ‘to-do’ list for tomorrow. Boring and much the same tomorrow.

   I got the posters printed and laminated. S**** was supposed to be dropping the disc, with the tickets on, up at the directors house. Either he was going to drop them off, or Mrs H was going to do it. However, neither of them realised the disc was there (on top of his wallet), so it will have to be tomorrow now. Fingers crossed, that I get the programme details soon, but I can see them turning up at 11:00pm on Sunday evening. They will need them as soon as possible though, as the first performance is Wednesday, so I’ll not have much time. It should be okay, if I can find a template for a single fold, double sided A4 booklet !!

Does provoking a widespread response automatically equate to success?

The British Humanist Association (BHA) and the Atheist Bus Campaign latest billboard posters against the take over of community schools by faith groups has certainly, once again, brought their campaign to media and public attention.

The adverts have drawn a positive response from the significant, possibly the majority, proportion of the British public who feel uneasy about schools being subverted to the wider strategic aims of religious organisations, and their fears that children will be coerced and our communities segregated.

Likewise the posters have also provoked a small flurry of negative media commentary that the campaign has had to try and rebut this week.

Media and online responses to the poster are clearly divided, but does this imply success or failure for the poster? This will depend on the strategic aims of the initiative.

On one side the poster is clearly helping a fundraising drive, has energised supporters and helped to keep the issue in the public eye. On the other the poster has equally energised its opponents who, as is life in campaigns, won’t accept the desired framing of the issues at hand and will seek to re-frame the debate.

However, one indicator of relative success is how the campaign seemS to have become synonymous with billboard advertising, in so far as that a search of the term “billboard campaign” on Google brings up BHA and Atheist Bus web pages as the first and third results and a BBC report on the campaign comes in second.
