The 28th annual Alternative Muscle Club meeting is taking place at the University of Oxford from 28th – 29th June 2010. This meeting is for PhD students and Postdocs involved in all areas of muscle research. Encompassing the rich history of the AMC, the meeting will provide an informal and relaxed environment for delegates to discuss their research. Friendships formed between delegates in previous meetings have gone on to become collaborations between world-leading researchers who still support the meeting.

The focus of each AMC meeting is on poster sessions & talks from delegates, in a non-intimidating environment (hence ‘alternative’). There will also be a session dedicated to first year PhD students, who are invited to present either the main aims of their project or focus on a particular result that they have achieved thus far. The final program will thus reflect the research of this year’s applicants and is not limited by a particular theme.

For more information and to apply please visit the AMC website http://tiny.cc/AMC2010

This is a cross-faculty forum which gives postgraduate students the chance to ask questions about any aspect of academic writing. The first few minutes of each clinic will be a brief review of the main points of a topic from the on-line training materials. The clinic will then be open for questions which may be on any topic related to academic writing.

Please be aware that: questions will be answered in the order they are posted, the clinic will start at 12.30pm and end at 1.30pm (questions will be accepted until 1.25pm), guidance will be generic as it is a University-wide resource, and the clinics are to complement (not as an alternative to) the on-line course or in-sessional classes.

The Pan-African University, envisaged as a continental network of institutions training postgraduate students and promoting research, is set to open its doors in February 2010. The Pan African University (PAU), supported by the African Union, will not construct a new higher education infrastructure – at least not for now – but will use existing universities as satellites across the continent to train masters and PhD students. It will eventually comprise a main campus linked to a network of five regional centres, chosen for their academic and research strength and the relevance of their work to Africa’s needs. The centres will be located in North, West, East, Central and Southern Africa.

“Graduates from a leading UK university are being offered £2,000 to stay on and do research rather than try to find their first job during the recession. Durham University said its 102 taught Masters scholarships would ‘give students a real chance to upskill’. A recent survey suggested graduate recruiters were cutting targets, with a reduction of 47% in investment banking. It is likely to mean more intense competition among graduates this year for fewer available jobs. More students could be applying for post-graduate courses as a result …” (more)

The Graduate Workshop in World History invites papers from postgraduate students on the theme of “Popular Movements in World History” for our termly workshop to be held on 3 December 2008.

2009 will see the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. The workshop will take that anniversary as a starting point to look more broadly at popular movements throughout world history. These can range from the social, cultural, ideological and religious aspects of political mobilisation, to broader themes examining concepts such as democracy, liberty, or justice and their role in revolutions. We are particularly interested in papers which focus on trans-national and cross-border movements.

There is no limit on the time period or scope of the paper. Paper presentations should last no longer than 20 minutes. The Graduate Workshop in World History is a postgraduate seminar held at the Modern History Faculty, University of Oxford, UK, and aims to be a forum for the free exchange of ideas between postgraduate students. We strongly encourage submissions from postgraduate students at any stage of their studies. We regret travel grants are not available.

Please submit a short abstract of no more than 300 words to M. Ali Raza at muhammad.raza@sant.ox.ac.uk by November 15, 2008. Please include your name, institutional affiliation, e-mail address and other contact information.

Illinois/Indiana National Dissertation Workshop: “East Asian Education”

Indiana University Bloomington, May 8-9, 2008

The Illinois/Indiana East Asia National Resource Center Consortium (IL/IN East Asia NRC) is pleased to announce its second annual IL/IN National Dissertation Workshop in the field of East Asian education. The workshop will be held May 8-9, 2008 on the campus of Indiana University Bloomington. Doctoral students in education, history, sociology, anthropology, and other disciplines whose dissertation projects concern education in East Asia are invited to apply. The workshop is designed to enable students just beginning work on their dissertations, as well as those farther along, to engage in intensive discussions of their own and each other’s projects. Possibilities for continuing networks among interested students and faculty will also be explored. The workshop will be limited to 8 participants, and the cost of the workshop, meals, accommodations, and travel costs (airfare or mileage up to $500) will be covered by the IL/IN East Asia NRC.

Faculty leaders: The workshop will be led by a team of multidisciplinary faculty covering the areas of China, Japan, and Korea: Nancy Abelmann, Harry E. Preble Professor of Anthropology, Asian American Studies, and East Asian Languages and Cultures and Director, Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Gary DeCoker, Professor of Japanese Studies and Director, Japan Study, Earlham College; and Heidi Ross, Professor of Education Leadership and Policy Studies, School of Education, Indiana University Bloomington and Director, East Asian
Studies Center, Indiana University.

Eligibility and application: Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a doctoral program and must have drafted a dissertation research proposal, although they need not have advanced to candidacy. Those in the early phases of writing are also encouraged to apply.
The Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications

The Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications from postgraduate students who are engaged in research on Southeast Asia to attend the 3rd Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asia Studies on 24 – 25 July 2008.

Marking the completion of the Asia Research Institute’s ASEAN Research Scholars Programme 2008, the Forum provides a platform for communication and cooperation among the postgraduate students as they mature into the next generation of academic leaders.

Postgraduate students working on Southeast Asia are invited to submit abstracts based either on work in progress that is at an advanced stage (i.e. already completed data collection and analysis), or on completed work. NUS students are encouraged to take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to interact and exchange ideas with students from ASEAN as well as those from other regions whose interests focus on Southeast Asia.

This two-day workshop, the third of an annual series of forums for graduate students who work on Southeast Asia, will be organised thematically. Themes will include (but are not limited to) issues in religion, politics, economy, gender, culture, migration, and population and social change.

In addition to student presentations, experts of the region will also be invited to give keynote speeches, sharing their insights on challenges and issues facing contemporary social science scholarship.

Registration fees and Singapore expenses will be covered for those whose abstracts are accepted for presentation. If necessary, students may also apply for some funding to cover regional travel costs.

SUBMISSION OF PAPER PROPOSAL
Graduate students should submit a 400-word abstract of their proposed paper using the PROPOSAL FORM

to Ms Valerie Yeo: valerieyeo@nus.edu.sg no later than 16 May 2008. Successful applicants will be notified by 2 June 2008. The abstract should clarify the substantive issues which your paper will address and be firmly grounded in
your own research project. Using the format given, the abstract should include information on objectives, methods, and findings, as well as explain the original contribution the research makes to the field of study.

Please include your name, institutional affiliation, e-mail address and other contact information. One confidential letter of recommendation from a supervisor should also be forwarded to this address by the same date.

Those selected have to submit full-length papers, of around 5,000 words in length, by 11 July 2008.

“Talking Across Borders” Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference at the University

“Talking Across Borders” Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference at the University of Washington

We seek submissions for an interdisciplinary graduate student conference the purpose of which is to challenge the divisions present within discipline of History and between History and other disciplines. This conference, to be held April 4th-6th, 2008 and supported by the Department of History at the University of Washington, seeks to stimulate dialogue by bringing scholars from a wide variety of disciplines together to enrich each other’s work with outside perspectives and methodologies.

While papers that focus on crossing these inter- and intradisciplinary divides are ideal, the thematic and interdisciplinary structure of the conference itself will help to put the various papers in dialogue with each other. We therefore invite proposals on all historic topics, regions, and time periods from historians and non-historians. Papers will be on panels of 3-4 other papers with a commentator. Presentations will be limited to 20 minutes.

Possible topics of proposals may include but are not limited to:
Religious Encounters and Exchanges
Imagined Communities, Imagined Borders
Defining Masculinity and Femininity
Systems of Power
The Performance of History
History as Literature/Literature as History
Borderlands and Cultural Contact
Gendered Space and Power
Social Networks and Nexuses
Interpreting Artistic Expression Historically

Papers selected for their exceptional merit and interest will be submitted to and published by Istoria, the Department of History’s electronic journal.

Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words and a title by January 18th, 2008 to TalkingAcrossBorders@gmail.com or by mail to: Christopher Herbert, Conference Committee Chair, Department of History, University of Washington, 315 Smith Hall, Box 353560, Seattle, WA, 98195-3560, USA.

“Is this the Asian Century?”
1-3 July 2008, Sebel Albert Park Hotel, Melbourne

This conference will bring together specialists to assess trends in Asian law, medicine and health, science, ethics/human rights, politics, regional security, economics, culture, religion, environment, media, the performing arts and many
other fields. Given the theme we encourage cross-country and inter-regional analysis. To assess how Asia is progressing, we need to think broadly about Asia and compare trends in India and China, the new giants of Asia, with the older industrial power of Japan and newly emerging economies of Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. We also need to link up these trends with events outside Asia.

Join us either as a presenter of a conference paper or as a participant to debate what is happening in the Asian region and its impact on the rest of the world. In some fields, trends in Asia are driving world affairs but in other areas Asia lags behind. What is the case in your field? Will this be the Asian century?
