The first Time I attended a seminar by Winn Claybaugh  was in 2001. I had seen him before in beauty shows through out the country; he has a magnetism that makes you  smile.

 A force in the beauty industry, Claybauugh is owner of many salons and beauty academies since 1983, founder and co-owner of Paul Mitchell School, author and speaker, Winn outstanding contribution in the beauty industry is legendary. But what you remember the most after you meet him is that he makes you want to smile.

For my first seminar I prepared with a list of concerns, a new notebook and a new roller ball pen. I had opened my business a couple of years before and had begun struggling with the ups and downs of managing hairdressers. I wanted to know what he had done to stay so positive for so many years; specifically I wanted to learn how to deal with the “nagging” that can sometimes happen when you are surrounded by hair dressers.

 His seminar was full of anecdotes that encompassed  lessons but that kept us all laughing And towards the end of the class  we were able to voiced our concerns; As it turn out, my issues where the same that every salon owner had, including him. He said to fire grumpy people but to allow a control “bitching” for this he suggested a “bitch contract” because sometimes being nice is “a bunch of crap” we are humans and tough days do happen. . 

 At the end of the class my note book had only one phrase “learning how to be nice is the most important skill one can have” His bitch contract was for compassion not for nagging.

I walked out felling empowered and renew. I had a bitch contract signed by Winn Claybaught with my new rollerball pen, which I let him keep to sign autographs.  I had lost my pen but had gained a bitch.

Last month I received an invitation to attend a class Winn was having at a local Hair School. I immediately grab my staff and ran. During the class I could see the emotion he still evokes in young hair dressers that meet him for the first time. His speech where lessons on being grateful, appreciative and above all on being nice; a lesson that we all need to be reminded from time to time.

Winn Claybaught is not a hair dresser, but many don’t know this, he did not even finish high school. In an industry  where stylist and clients are constantly learning of one and other,  engaged in emotions that can change as quickly as their hair styles, where learning the latest trends and fads is part of the job, Winn Remind  us that “learning how to be nice is the most important skill one can have”

In the wake of numerous media issues related to WWE wrestlers’ Twitter comments, WWE management has reportedly begun asking talent to be more conscious and limited in their Tweeting on the website. Further, there is reportedly an all-out directive to not use the website after midnight.

Now is just funny to me why would the WWE care about something like Twitter.

Christian organizations or religious groups in general, are pretty common on college campuses.  UW is no different.  I saw the sign near Kane Hall on UW’s Red Square and I had to check it out.  Plus, I’ve already been given my annual Gideon Bible (the small green Bible’s containing just the New Testament’s gospel) and since I missed that opportunity to write, I couldn’t ignore this one.

Walking toward the group, I saw that the sign read, “Repent or Else,” with a Bible passage from Luke chapter 13 below the phrase.   In fact, everything he had with him, including his clothing, was a tribute to what he was talking about.   The jacket he wore said, “Jesus saves from Hell.”  

In my experience, there will inevitably someone who disagrees with you.  Since I go to a university as diverse as UW’s is, I thought to myself, “I wonder who’s winning the argument.”   I sat down for ten minutes.

i’m working on my 13th week of school now, and as i look back, i wonder how i have managed to sit through most, if not all, of my classes.

today was average, like any other day. i had a paper due, but aside from that, it was completely and utterly average.

UNTIL… my comparative religion class.

the topic of discussion… or actually, i should say topics, since my cute, elderly, jewish professor loves to “taste every dish in the buffet line” when it comes to discussion topics. (do you like that? i just made that up. i think it works quite well)

anywho, the topics today are as follows:

1. racial profiling after september 11th
2. the patriot act (i participated during this convo)
3. pope benedict
4. how christians can respect jews
5. (i started painting my nails)
6. (i opened my course packet, but kept painting my nails)
7. honestly, i stopped paying attention after my professor told me pope benedict was NOT a nazi

but somehow, in the mix of things, i did stumble across some pretty weird and frightfully entertaining things that were said:

1. average sneeze takes place. random guy says this to sneezing kid: “dude, that was awesome. yeah it was (simply reaffirming himself about how awesome he thought it was). damn, what a good sneeze. i love sneezing.” ridiculous. i wonder what his lines are to pick up women.
2. professor says this about how young americans act (keep in mind that he’s in his late 60’s, cute, fragile, and jewish): “young america is all about going out to get drunk and hook up. what you should be saying is, ‘there’s no cheap intercourse here!’” wise word, profe. wise words.
3. professor regarding pope benedict: “i know that we all have our own idears.” well professor, i have both idears and ideas. do i get to voice both?
4. guy sitting by cami: “gggggggrrrwwww.” (that is a written simulated growl) apparently, once one’s hand is raised and hasn’t been called on for 5 seconds it is customary to growl. odd.

add these to the additional 3 sneezes, 2 nose-blows, and the insidiously long young-people “sexual intercourse” talk, and we have ourselves a successful class period.

i can’t wait for wednesday.

But the years go by, and the mood shifts. You didn’t have to be “alert” to spot Maj. Nidal Hasan. He’d spent most of the last half-decade walking around with a big neon sign on his head saying “JIHADIST. STAND WELL BACK.” But we (that is to say, almost all of us — and certainly almost anyone who matters in national security and the broader political culture) are now reflexively conditioned to ignore the flashing neon sign. Like those apocryphal Victorian ladies discreetly draping the lasciviously curved legs of their pianos, if a glimpse of hard unpleasant reality peeps through we simply veil it in another layer of fluffy illusions.

Literally almost a verbatim from a middle-aged gentleman at PodcampAZ, an event Project Fidelity attended this past weekend.  The man was attempting to articulate how fantastic it would be if machines could gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of the words it was using.  I tried to explain the concept of the semantic web to him, but I don’t think it came through clearly enough for him to grasp what semantic technologies are capable of and what they aren’t.

At the Podcamp, Paul Kenjora – CTO for Arkayne – spoke about the powers of cloud computing. This technique involves breaking down enormous tasks into slices and assigning huge numbers of computers to small parts of the overall task.  Performed simultaneously, this can dramatically reduce the amount of time needed to finish any given task.

Cloud computing, Kenjora said, can help us solve problems previously beyond the realm of possibility.  With the cost of cloud computing continuing to fall, the feasibility of accomplishing overwhelmingly complex objectives requiring massive amounts of processing power is within reach.  Kenjora explained it is all a matter of scale.

“When you have 100 million points which need to be computed, why not take 1000 computers and give each of them 100,000 points?” Kenjora said. “What can be done on one machine can be split up and done on many.”

Paul believes there is no computation problem too large, but we must figure out what problems are worth solving.  Cloud computing can figure out every word, in every Tweet, ever.  But why would we do that? Maybe researchers, social scientists and pollsters  could gain insight into the pulse and sentiment of our country in a level previously unimaginable.  Maybe some connection we don’t even know between the stock market and Twitter.  Who knows?  The point is, as Kenjora points out, is to find applications people are willing to fund. Problems people want and need solving.

Explaining the value of a semantic web has been a challenge for Project Fidelity. For those who are baffled by the abstract nature of problems bigger than our heads can hold – such as explaining the relationships between words, content and value online – perhaps it is best to start small.  Often, however, Project Fidelity explains things to people, such as the gentleman I alluded to earlier, in a far too technical manner.

This Quick Intro to RDF explains how the semantic web works on a simple, but technical level.  This approach makes sense to us, but it is perhaps akin to explaining how a to drive a manual transmission car by describing how it works rather than how to operate it.  The W3 consortium provides its own introduction to web 3.0.  While slightly less technical, it is still difficult to glean the express value of realizing the untapped potential of linked data for someone not immersed in the subject.  One of the paramount challenges Project Fidelity – and the semantic tech field as a whole – faces is communicating why the semantic web is a more valuable one. Especially to media companies.

Hopefully, we can get to know Paul and Arkayne a little better and give some more insight into another exciting start-up, located right here in the Phoenix valley.  Because if we can’t convince people the semantic web is a problem worth solving, it will never happen.

I’m really excited to tell everyone about a project that I’m putting together called
Anthem 3:16. But before I get into the who, what, when, where, why and how let me give you some of the inspiration behind the project.

I just recently turned 25 and on that day I was blessed with the opportunity to drive for close to 8 hours at the start of my work day. And I don’t mean that sarcastically. The vehicle I was driving was a military “Hummer” and those vehicles are not quiet…they are actually very loud. I had a co-driver but sitting having a conversation in that type of truck just isn’t an option sometimes. So I had a lot of time to think and to pray.

I took a nice long look at my life thus far and what I have or have not accomplished. Opportunities have passed me by and what doors were open but are now closed due to my lack of action. And for those of you that don’t know I lead worship at my church and I write original songs as well. I’ve done some of my songs at church but am I using the gifts that God has given to me like I should be? I’ve been told by mulitple people that I should record my music and I typically brush it off making some feeble attempt to be modest. But I’m a firm believer that if God gives us gifts then they can be taken away. And I believe that we are to leave a legacy in life. If I were to die tomorrow what legacy what I leave for my wife and kids? I would have nothng but a binde full of songs that most people have never heard. They would have gone to waste. So I’m putting together a team of awesome people and we are going to sit down, set a date and record a worship album by that date. I will update everyone on this blog regarding our progress and I’ll ask that everyone that’s able to pray for this project.
