Have you ever wondered what types of foundation to use to achieve that “baby soft, smooth” fin

Have you ever wondered what types of foundation to use to achieve that “baby soft, smooth” finish? As always, the first step in accomplishing this look would be to seek professional skin care routinely, and to keep in mind that professional skin care can be affordable. Besides general skin care, other factors are the tools that you use (i.e. brush, sponges). Knowing what types of foundation is best for your skin type, and the finish you are seeking i.e. matte, natural matte, satin, or dewy. Let’s begin discussing foundations for skin types:

Oily skin: For oily skin, the foundation most recommended is a water-based foundation (meaning water is the main ingredient). This skin type should stay away from oil-based foundation. When researching products be aware that some products that are labeled oil-free simply means free of mineral oil, but may contain some content of oil that binds the properties. (We will discuss ingredients in greater detail in the future). Another recommendation for oily acne prone skin is to use a silicone based primer before application. Silicone helps the foundation to go on smoothly. All skin types can use a silicone base primer. Water-based creams or alcohol-based liquids can be used under the foundation. If medicated gels are applied they need to be allowed to dry before the foundation is used. Liquids, powders, and aerosol foundations are suited for this skin type. For skin with many comedones (blackheads), sheer foundations are best.
Dry skin: Oil-based products are recommended for dry skin. Oil-based and some water based foundations with a moderate degree of oil will give you the best chance of retaining moisture in your skin. The oil will give a semi-matte finish, and will be easier to apply. Cream sticks are suited for this skin type.
Sensitive: Sensitive skin types should use lightweight foundations that are hypoallergenic and non-comedegenic.
Combination: If you have combination skin (like dry skin with oily T-zone) then you need a makeup that has moisturizers in it but is also oil-free and provides shine control for your oily spots. There are many makeup choices for combination skin. This skin type should concentrate on picking products that best suit whichever problem is worse — oiliness or dryness.
Scarred skin: Cake foundations are recommended, as well as a silicon base.
Mature skin: Mature skin with concerns of fine lines & wrinkles should use a firming foundation. Mature skin, as well as dry skin, should refrain from using mineral-based foundations due to their settling into the lines and causing the finish to look blotchy.

Tips: # 1 It is very important to know your skin’s undertone coloring. Are you warm, cool, or neutral? Warm tones are yellow, orange, or red orange. Cool tones are blue, blue green (olive), or blue red (pink). Neutral tones have equal amounts of warm & cool colorings. Some professionals also view the undertones in ranges such as: very light, porcelain or white, ivory, cream, pink florid, sallow, olive, tan, brown and ebony. Foundations should be matched to your natural skin under tone and should appear as if you have nothing on. Keep in mind that the purpose of a foundation is to even out the skin tone, minimize imperfections, and give the skin a smooth, healthy glow. During the course of a year, it is recommended that you use one of two foundations. One shade for summer and another for winter. Skin tones tend to lighten during the winter months and become darker during the summer months.
#2 Before applying foundation be sure to always apply a moisturizer first, then your primer. A primer is not to replace your moisturizer. The reason behind the moisturizer is that if your skin is thirsty for moisture when applying foundation the skin will absorb the foundation thinking it is hydrating; leaving an uneven coverage. For women who want coverage that is the same consistency as a tinted moisturizer, but delivers more coverage, a great way to achieve this is to add a little of your liquid foundation along with your daily moisturizer.
#3 SPF- Sunscreen is important and can’t be stressed enough. The number one cause of aging and damage to the skin is sun exposure! Sun protection is the most important skin care product you can use everyday. The first and most important defense against wrinkles is the daily use of sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher. It can be in your foundation or moisturizer and it will help to prevent new wrinkles from developing and existing ones from getting deeper.
#4 When applying foundation be sure to apply foundation a little below the jawline. Also, if taking photos be sure to touch up the ears.

The Pacific Northwest has been going off as of recent. Snowfall had been accumulating in the feet,

The Pacific Northwest has been going off as of recent. Snowfall had been accumulating in the feet, not the inches, over the past couple weeks around Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, as storm cycles pounded the Cascades relentlessly with wonderful November snow. Fortunately, I “had” to go home to Seattle for Thanksgiving break, because spending a summer in Boulder working at SKI Magazine had left no time for visiting family. Also headed home for the break was my buddy Jonny, one of CU Backcountry Club’s leaders and a Snoqualmie-slush native skier as well. We planned a short day in the backcountry for Friday, to work off some turkey, but the weekend dumpings forced us to go Monday morning as well.

To research our surroundings, we used Alpental.com and figured out a rough idea of what the area looked like. We skinned up to “Knoll 1″ in the “Sharon Bowl” in about two and a half hours (with many stops for photo ops), took a short break on top, and skied down “Ropeline” and “Elevator Shaft” back to the upper lot at Alpental. The snow was fresh knee to thigh deep powder, and extremely stable, which was a welcome change from the Colorado slide-prone slopes we are used to skiing. The day completely reinforced our ideas of coming back to the Pacific Northwest after college. Here are some photos from the day, enjoy!

Last week we were busy shopping for our WhereInCabos’ customers and, as it’s usually the rule, we ran into a few tourists that were wondering aimlessly along the aisles at a major grocery store in Cabo San Lucas. We know that wondering in foreign stores can be both fun and overwhelming, especially if you happen to be wondering around right smack in the heart of a busy weekend that happens to coincide with a pay day in Cabos. The crowds and noise can be a bit too much…. add Spanish labels to the mix and sometimes even the simplest of shopping trips can become quite a handful.
So.. there we were last weekend shopping away, when we found a couple staring at the dish-soap options that were available and we overheard them wonder whether the medium size bag of dishwasher powder would last them for the week. When we heard this we had to intercede and explain that in Mexico powdered dish-soap doesn’t necessarily mean dishwasher soap and in this case the one they were about to choose would have ended up filling their kitchen with suds as it was not dishwasher soap but the old-fashioned powdered dish-soap that you dissolve in water to wash your dishes in the sink. We were glad to help avert a kitchen disaster and they were glad to’ve found an English speaking couple to help them clear their doubts. Alas, there was no dishwasher soap available there and we recommended they go to a different store, but they decided to just get some liquid dish-soap and get back to their vacation. A good choice if you ask us.

The moral of the story… remember that when in Mexico even if something looks like a duck and walks like a duck it might not always be a duck… but luckily we’re here to help.

3) To get a nice pout of the lips, after lipstick & gloss is applied use concealer and apply around the lips blending with brush.

4) To achieve an instant brow lift, apply a sheer layer of brow highlight above the brow.

5) To give lips a fuller appearance, add gold or silver to the center of the bottom lip. This technique can be applied to any lipstick or gloss. Remember to slightly blend.

Robert Patterson at the New Moon Premiere wore his hair in his classic disheveled style that has made his distinctive look famous. At iDaburn salon we would achieve this look by razor cutting to loosen out the natural weight of your hair. Make sure to leave the perimeter with some length to add to the looseness of the style.

To style, add some Bumble and Bumble Sumo Wax or Styling Wax if your hair is finer and spread it evenly throughout. Then just groom into position.

Taylor Lautner has thick straight hair so a razor cut suits this style best. Most men aren’t as fortunate as Taylor so stick to a cut with the scissors but make sure to have plenty of textured added.

To style this look, mix Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine with Sumotech to give you the perfect shine with a solid texture.

Kirsten Stewart went for a modern take of the Prom Hair which captured her very prominent wild side with a sophisticated rocker feel.

To get the look, pre-dampen your hair with Bumble and Bumble Prep and Thickening Hairspray for texture and volume.

Then diffuse the hair until dry and use a 1″ curling iron in vertical sections randomly throughout the hair.

Add Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine all over in large twisting motions to maintain a chunkier look. Add Hair powder to the roots for a more secure feel.

Twist random sections from the front and temples and secure with bobby pins and spray to finish.

I am a powder girl. No liquid foundations for me. And definition of powder can only comes in loose or compact not even 2-way cake for me. Yes i know these days foundations are ingenious with built in benefits like hydration, SPF and glow factor etc. But i am still not wowed – being natural is in my profile. I am most happy with least makeup. I only wear them when i go for dinner or for serious photo taking. Have been an ardent fan of Estee Lauder loose powder since the day I started on makeup. Only decided to change cos i wanted some adventure. I chanced upon this innovative packaging (by YSL) some time ago. Though i still like the finer texture of my first loose powder, i definitely treasure the fun of this new “toy” and the no-more-mess of loose powder. You just need to dial the rim anti-clockwise, the powder is out. And you can control the amount you want, no more turning the powder upside down!

Hornady Manufacturing has just announced its new line of “Superformance” hunting ammunit

Hornady Manufacturing has just announced its new line of “Superformance” hunting ammunition. Hornady claims that, “across the board” the new Superformance ammo will deliver “100 to 200 fps higher velocities than any other standard ammunition currently available.” Hornady also claims its Superformance ammo delivers increased velocities “WITHOUT increases in felt recoil, muzzle blast, temperature sensitivity, fouling or loss of accuracy.” Hornady President Steve Hornady says this is “a whole new standard in ammunition performance… We are going to be able to raise the velocity of almost any [hunting] load you’ve ever used… by 100-200 fps.” Surprisingly, the marketing materials even claim that Superformance ammo delivers higher velocities with “no increases in barrel wear” — something that runs contrary to common sense.

Rather amazing claims are being made for this new Hornady ammo. Are such claims to be believed? Well, when AccurateShooter.com tested Alliant Reloder 17 powder last year we confirmed that it could deliver 100-200 fps more velocity than most popular powders, in some cartridges. Presumably, Hornady is employing propellants with technologies similar to Reloder 17. Hornady’s marketing materials state that it is using “ultra progressive” “21st Century” propellants for the new Superformance ammo. Hornady has also brought out a line of GMX® mono-metal bullets that feature two deep cannelures for reduced bearing surface. It is well-established that this kind of bullet design can yield higher velocities, particularly in the big-bore calibers with heavy bullets.

So… the velocity claims may be bonafied, though we would expect the velocity gains will vary among the cartridges. Some chamberings will benefit from the new propellants more than others. And only half the Superformance ammo line-up features GMX bullets, the other half being loaded with more conventional SST® bullets.

How about the claims regarding recoil? The claim that Superformance ammo can deliver 100-200 fps more velocity without any more recoil is questionable. Hornady can’t alter the laws of physics. If a bullet of given weight has a higher muzzle velocity, it MUST produce more recoil than the same bullet moving slower — provided that the propellant charge weight (and rifle weight) are held constant. The only way Hornady can achieve higher velocities without increased recoil is by either: 1) reducing bullet weight; or 2) reducing the powder charge (or gas-related recoil). Hornady could hold recoil constant if its new propellants achieve the higher velocities with a reduced powder charge compared to “conventional” loads.

Hornady has issued an 11-page technical report that provides support for many of its marketing claims. Authored by Hornady Senior Ballistician Dave Emary, the report features some interesting test results, summarized in graphs. Regarding the recoil question, Emary argues that “Recoil … has parts to it that are not commonly understood. The fundamental misunderstanding of recoil is that the recoil is over when the bullet leaves the barrel. In truth, the vast majority of recoil occurs after the projectile exits the barrel. By far the greatest percentage of recoil is produced by the force of the gases and propellant residue/ejecta leaving the barrel.” Emary cites test results showing that “approximately 85 – 90% of the recoil happens after the projectile has left the barrel”. If Emary is correct, then Hornady might be able to achieve higher bullet velocities without enhanced recoil, provided the gas-based force is reduced.

We strongly recommend you read Emary’s report. CLICK HERE to download Superformance Ammo Report.

Hornady plans to release a complete line-up of Superformance ammunition for twenty chamberings: 243 Win, 6mm Rem, 257 Roberts, 25-06, 6.5 Creedmoor, 270 win, 7×57, 7mm-08, 280 Rem, 7mm Mag, 308 Win, 30 TC, 30-06, 300 RCM, 300 Win Mag, 338 RCM, 338 Win Mag, 375 H&H, 375 Ruger, and 458 Win Mag. CLICK HERE to review all the available calibers and bullet options for Superformance ammunition.

I have slowly been getting all lined out on the social media side of things recently around the web. Between learning how Twitter works, finding new Facebook applications, and linking Flickr to everything it has been a fun learning process. If you are on these sites go ahead and add me as a friend and let’s start the conversation!

I have been enjoying a little Mexico surf vacation recently, and will be getting back up to the states soon. A little sun and surf never hurts, but seeing all the snow reports and powder photos is making me antsy. So excited to ski this winter.

You may sometimes notice small holes appearing in your newly washed laundry. If you’re pretty sure that it’s not just that the material is worn and aged anyway then you might like to know the following:

The enzymes in biological washing powders can attack the natural fibres of especially wool and silk, breaking them down. (There are usually warnings on washing product packaging but they are not always obvious). For washing these delicate fabrics therefore, use something gentle that you might use for babies’ clothes, like ‘Dreft’. I personally have found that 100% cotton can be similarly eaten up by the enzymes in biological powders and the solution for me was to change powder (in my case ‘Persil’ biological powder did the damage while other biological powders seemed OK).

Check the instructions of your washing machine for recommended spin speeds. Too high a spin speed can loosen and damage fibres. Below is a general chart to show that certain fabrics need certain maximum spin speeds:

             Cottons: 1400 rpm

             Minimum iron: 1200 rpm

             Delicates: 600 rpm

             Woollens: 1200 rpm

             Silks: 400 rpm

             Shirts: 600 rpm

             Denim: 900 rpm

For me, these two are the most obvious culprits but if you’ve tried altering both of the above it is also worth knowing that deodorant has been implicated and may damage clothing – so changing brand again may help.

Then there are also the most obvious reasons – which I’ve left until last here because I assume you’ve already considered them:

Don’t wash delicate fabrics with clothes that have zips, hooks, or wires. For washing mixed loads where you are concerned about damage in this way, you may find using special laundry bags useful. These come in a variety of sizes, some large enough to accommodate things like skirts. Either place the offending article (with the metal fastening) or the delicate articles in a fine mesh laundry bag and this should help to minimise damage. Under wire bras should, in any case, really be hand washed.

Where is the damage occurring? If it’s close to the underarms and you wear under wire bras, is it possible that the wire is snagging on the fabric causing wear?

If it is across the front or back of the material, around waist height, it’s possible that it’s just wear and tear from leaning against kitchen counter tops. Apparently granite worktops are particularly abrasive to clothing.

So it’s been a while since the last time I posted and a lot has happened. It has started to snow more frequently around the Wasatch and the mountains are maintaining a fresh sheet of snow. I have found my self hiking for preseason turns with my friends numerous times and it just keeps getting better. The last time I went out it was thigh deep pow at the top of Collins chair in Alta!

Preseason pow with Jake Garcia, John Collinson, Neil Howard and I

Other than skiing I have been training with the Snowbird Freeride Team at Black Diamond Gymnastics. It is a super fun time and will hopefully do good things for this winter. Check out the edit that Nate Cahoon made…

I also did a little photo shoot with Mike Schirf, Taylor Lyman, and John Collinson. We got some pretty rad shots and check back for some more in the future.

Last weekend went to scout a new mountain range. Tried to get to this…

Ended up doing a lot of this…

Skied dense, rocky trees and did more of this…

Then looked back and wished we were able to get to this…

Anyone guess what mountain range?? Leave a comment if you think you know!
