Consider a Martial artist who can strike a man down with out even touching him. There is a power within that goes out and knocks down his enemy. Now, we know that everything was created by Him and for Him. So even this dance was created for God, only it has been taken by the enemy and now used for evil instead of good. The arts were created that we may “execute vengance on the heathen and bind their kings (principalities of the air) with fetters and chains” (psalm 149). But instead, what is happening is the enemy has taken it and is binding us up!

It’s clear that we do not fight against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12) and everywhere we look we can see how the enemy is warring against God and His people by trying to keep us bound. The weapons the enemy is using are words (imposed or declared), songs, dance and music. For example, if we take a look at rock music we can see Lucifer doing warfare against God (remember God created everything, therefore rock is a perversion of what God made). Rock promotes suicide, drugs, fornication, rebellion against authority etc. To everything in the world you will find that there is a perversion and counterfeit of something Godly. Now as we have established that anything he uses is a perversion of what God intended it for, you must realise that these were originally intended to keep us close to God (in His refuge), with the knowledge of Him, and to obey Him.

Now if these martial artists and rock bands can draw on a power within that with every movement or beat on the drum it can do damage to their opponents and those listening (whether it be external or internal)- imagine what the Children of God can do!!! When we have God’s Spirit dwelling within us we too can draw upon this power to destroy the works of the enemy. We can bring healing and deliverance, that is, being set free from anything that has kept us bound internally. This can be anything from alcoholism, to low self esteem caused by childhood rape. This is done not through the dance itself, but when the beliver (child of God) steps (dances) out in faith, each movement becomes just an extension of Gods power within us. Therefore, when we dance through aisles at church and especially in our homes, people will be loosed from bondage. People will get up out of wheelchairs and walk, strongholds of lust or depression (both things I have struggled with and danced my way through) will be broken. People will be released to praise, honor and glorify the one true living God.

The silver-haired Scarbrough is a veteran journalist and longtime Hollywood assistant director who worked with directors Clint Eastwood, Leonard Nimoy, Blake Edwards and Carl Reiner before moving from Los Angeles, California, to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Scarbrough’s book, Medicine Dance: One Woman’s Healing Journey into the World of Native American Sweatlodges, Drumming Meditations and Dance Fasts, was a finalist for the 2008 New Mexico Book Awards as well as the USA Book News Awards. Scarbrough shares with listeners what she has learned about the power of dance to heal from her work with the Native American teacher, Beautiful Painted Arrow/Joseph Rael, and Ayo Adeyemi, the Nigerian master drummer/Yoruba ceremonial leader.

Interviewing Scarbrough will be Why Shamanism Now? host Christina Pratt, author of the two-volume Encyclopedia of Shamanism from Rosen Publishing. Pratt runs the Last Mask Center for Shamanic Healing out of Portland, Oregon. Her web radio show airs every Wednesday afternoon.

[Dance is] a meditation for the dancer. The movement itself is prayer. Dance and rhythm are the means by which shamans can repaired or restore vibration. Since we are actually vibration rhythm, dance and ritual can be used to heal us.

We have witnessed the power of inner beauty emerging into an angelic voice in Susan Boyle. Now, here’s the hidden power of dance courtesy of this pair of floor genius named after a fungus – Pilobolus. The 13-minute dance itself is sort of a contemplative rendition the silence is so loud I cannot keep but blog it. I’m only learning to become internet-savvy so the video must have left some of you breathless as early as 2007. Warning: the whole performance is breathtaking it could put you into a trance, and your house on fire if you’re cooking.
