Dzięki Światowi finansjery nasz cykl wydawniczy w zasadzie doścignął już produkującego książki w taśmowym tempie Pratchetta. Tym razem mowa jest o bankach, kryzysie finansowym i sprzężeniu zwrotnym między doskonałym modelem a rzeczywistością. Do kompletu kolejne ogarnięte obsesją czarne charaktery oraz niestety coraz częściej wychodzący z cienia i tracący przez to na tajemniczości Patrycjusz. Pojawiają się znowu golemy, z którymi nie ma niestety takiej zabawy jak z trollami, debiutuje też klub miłośników Kichania Ekstremalnego.

No to teraz jeszcze futbol, a potem już wspólnie czekamy na poborcę podatkowego…

La verdad, esperaba un poco más de este libro, aunque poco a poco ha ido ganando según avanzaba la historia.

Terry Pratchett is probably one of my favorite authors. While most view his work as fantasy, his fans see it as great literature. It shares with other great books penetrating insight into the human condition.

I’ve been reading Unseen Academicals. If you do, you can’t but notice Glenda Sugarbean, the Night Kitchen cook. As Lord Vetinari says, “That’s a Sugarbean woman for you, little domestic slaves until they think someone has been wronged, and then they go to war like a queen, with chariot wheels spinning and arms and legs all over the place. [...] One can only hope she doesn’t take it into her head to enter politics.”

She reminds me of another great Pratchett character, Granny Weatherwax, the old witch who really can’t do magic, but somehow is more powerful than any of the wizards.

There’s something to be learnt from these characters about quiet leadership. How selflessly they can focus on the outcomes, how single-mindedly they fight for the right cause, how little they care for perceptions or what others might say. Their spirit of sacrifice.

My friend and ex-boss Mike Zirngibl gave me one of the most thoughtful gifts of my professional career, a little book by Mark Sanborn titled “You don’t need a title to be a leader“. I got it at a time when he must have seen me particularly turmoiled, when I exuded ambition from every pore. Funnily enough, he did give me a bigger title soon after. But I think he was trying to make me see that anybody who seeks leadership is scaring it away. That we all have a choice.

We either want change or we want recognition.

If you work for recognition, change escapes. If you work for change, you may never get recognition.

The only true recognition, though, comes from effective change.

And how you act defines you.

So you must chose.

If you do things to get noticed, you will dillute the impact of your actions.

If you do things to change the world, you must be ready to go unnoticed.

Eventually, though, the world sorts itself out.

Whatever you position may be, work to affect change for the better around you. Stay out of politics as much as possible. Focus your energy on the outcomes. Don’t worry too much about how things look. And, if you deserve it, recognition may eventually come.

The Color of Magic est une minisérie produite par RHI Entertainment et SkyOne (chaîne britannique), adaptée des romans de Terry Pratchett La huitième couleur et Le huitième sortilège, constituants les deux premières Annales du Disque-monde. Après Les contes du Disque-monde (Hogfather en V.O), Vadim Jean rempile pour adapter cette fois-ci les romans aux origines de la saga crée par Pratchett.

Il s’agit donc toujours de fantasy humoristique, mais cette minisérie vous dépaysera beaucoup plus que Les contes du Disque-monde. Vous en verrez littéralement de toutes les couleurs. L’humour anglais est présent, mais moins accentué qu’on aurait pu l’imaginer.

David Jason, déjà présent dans Les contes du Disque-monde (dans le rôle d’Albert), tient un rôle important dans l’adaptation des Annales à la télévision. En plus d’être un acteur récurrent, il en est le producteur exécutif. Pour The Color of Magic, il incarne Rincevent (Rincewind en V.O), et est trop souvent exaspérant dans ce rôle. On retrouve aussi Sean Astin (Le Seigneur des Anneaux) et Tim Curry (Cluedo, Le Titanic, Rendez-vous avec la mort, entre autres).

A new Pratchett book is out – and I want the world to know about it. I’m getting it first thing in the morning. Or at the earliest convenience of the local bookstore.

To be honest, this has been my least favourite Discworld novel. I actually found myself mildly disappointed with it. This is book number 19 in the Discworld series, and although enjoyable, not as humorous or engaging as the rest of the series.

This is is Watch novel and we follow Vimes as he leads the team, which includes a dwarf and a werewolf as they investigate a crime that has not been authorised by any of the city’s Guilds. We meetgolums that have created their own king, but the said creation has gone wild and is killing people. It is thinking for itself, which agolum should not do.

I usually enjoy Watch novels, but there was something lacking in this book. We are transported to the Discworld in Pratchett’s usual way; and this book contains some characters we are fond of, such as Corporal Carrot, but I felt it lacked the usual adventure and endless humour that theDiscworld books usually entail. There is so much potential for this book, I just didn’t feel it delivered the goods. I wasn’t really a fan of thegolum’s – they didn’t interest me much. And being such a key part of the story, I think this was the problem.

Although not a bad book, this is the worst one of the series so far.

Szukasz pełnej humoru prozy fantasy? Lepiej nie mogłeś trafić – “Przenośne drzwi” Toma Holta zadowolą każdego konesera literatury.

Start w nowej pracy jest zawsze stresujący (zwłaszcza kiedy tak naprawdę jej nie chcesz). Gdy Paul Carpenter przychodzi do biura J.W. Wells & Co i od razu czuje się znudzony (jedynie nowa atrakcyjna koleżanka przyciąga jego uwagę), nawet nie ma pojęcia, w jakie wpadł tarapaty. Wkrótce odkrywa, że zarząd, który wypłacać mu będzie pensję, jest w rzeczywistości przykrywką dla niezwykle osobliwej “lewej” organizacji. Paul widzi, że dookoła dziwnie się dzieje, a w sobie (o zgrozo!) odkrywa niepokojące pokłady czarodziejskich talentów.

Gdyby był mądry i rozważny jak nakazują księgi przepowiadające wybranych otoczyłby się laskami i spijał drinki na ciepłej wyspie. Niestety, jak na nierozgarniętego Angola przystało dzięki magii pakuje się w nie lada kłopoty, z których trudno jest się wykaraskać.

O dziwo wydawnictwo Prószyński, które dawno nie gościło w moich rękach i nie zostało wsparte przeze mnie kupnem ich książki może się cieszyć faktem wydania takiej powieści (której już powinni zazdrościć inni wydawcy literatury fantasy).

Tom Holt ma dar do tworzenia opowieści trzymających w napięciu (jak w dobrej jakości thrillerze) a na dodatek okrasza to sporą dawką uniwersalnego (na szczęście nie angielskiego) humoru, który podoba się lecz nie powoduje totalnej chichawki. Dla jaj nazywa go ktoś następcą Pratchetta. Daleko mu do niego – na całe szczęście z takim stylem pisania może orać swoje poletko dalej bez obaw, że pozostanie bez środków do życia.

Mieszające się z popkulturą motywy literackie (gnomy, smoki, wróżki czy trolle) oraz polskie akcenty (Kazimierz Susłowicz – ponoć olbrzym) dodają całej opowieści pikanterii i zdecydowanie przemawiają za tym, by wspierać finansowo wydawcę oraz autora. Magiczne mikstury oraz niespodziewane wydarzenia rodem z horroru – to tylko epizodyczne – lecz ważne w całej narracji akcenty, które proszą o

I’m not going to spend much time talking about this book. There’s many reasons for that. Partly because it didn’t really strike me as unique enough to provoke any interesting reactions. Partly because to give the book credit I would have to say an awful lot of things about Discworld as a whole, which are better saved for some future occasion when I comment either on the series overall or on some particular highlight of it. Partly, and probably mainly, it’s because you’ve all read the book already, or if you haven’t, you’ve read the others and will read this one eventually. There’s not a lot that really can be said about it that you don’t already know or suspect. The same goes for me, seasoned reader of Discworld: there’s not a lot for me to think about it that would genuinely surprise me at this point.

So, a few quick comments on it. Firstly, it’s really quite good. It’s not up there with the best of Discworld (or how I remember the best of Discworld), but it’s far from the worst, and better than I was expecting. I think it’s certainly the best main-sequence book since Night Watch, and in some respects it’s one of his most sophisticated.

It is not, however, funny. I laughed out loud once – and even that was a clever little joke I was impressed by, not a real moment of hilarity. That’s pretty funny for an ordinary book, but not for Pratchett. I think I’ve heard all his jokes now. I sighed when I read the first page, with its political footnote, because I was sure I’d read exactly the same joke in another book. Before long, he’s abandoned comedy altogether, replacing it with the odd sly reference and a continual tone of flippant Englishness, which is appealing in small doses but can become repetitive.

However, it should not be said that Pratchett is unaware of his flaws. I think that, on some level, he realises his jokes are running stale, and increasingly he tries to compensate with seriousness – it happened in Night Watch, and it happens again here.

Unseen Academicals is, despite its simplicity, really quite complicated. For a start, the man is immensely erudite, and every page is crawling with homages and allusions – I’m certain I got man that most people would not get, and I suspect there are others, too. These allusion spans a gamut from one-line throwaways to entire plots, and he uses them to cunningly build up and subvert expectations. It’s not a new technique (going back, I think, to Wyrd Sisters and its shadowing of Shakespeare), but it’s worked out with greater complexity and fluidity here – rather than simply tracing one paradigm, competing myths are interwoven in a really quite impressive way. Unfortunately, this means that perhaps too much of what is foreshadowed never ends up happening – which may be intentional, but left me with a degree of a sense of irresolution.

The ‘issues’ the book deals with are twofold – one personal, one social. On a personal level, the message of the book was engaging, but not stunning – more complex and nuanced than an ordinary feel-good novel, but still not really saying anything too challenging. It was certainly better handled than some previous attempts – there was far more sophistication here than in the often ham-fisted personal-ethics preaching of Night Watch, for example.

UA attempts to surpass Night Watch in social message as well – but I feel it fails badly. The attempt to deal with the modern British lower classes feels forced, and only draws attention to how resolutely bourgeois the rest of the series has been. In any case, it fades almost instantly. The opening sections let us know that we’ll be dealing with, not to beat around the bush, chavs – they speak in the patois of chavdom (in which Pratchett fails to be convincing, even to my own sheltered ear), the women are brain-dead and read celebrity magazines, while the men are lascivious, drunken, and entirely indolent, avoiding all possible work. While it’s admirable that he’s chosen to update his series, it’s almost painful listening to the bourgeois writer attempting to imitate ‘popular’ culture, and it’s impossible not to dislike the characters. Naturally enough, Pratchett intends to challenge our preconceptions and make us end up liking them – but he cheats. By halfway through the book, they’ve dropped their ‘innits’, the heroine is showing unexpected perspicacity and a fine judgement of character, and even unknown talents and hard work, and the hero has turned out to be a rogue with a heart of gold, even if he has some rough edges. These aren’t the modern working class at all – these are lovable scallywags and rapscallions. It simply brings home how close much of the series is to a bad period adaptation – all the characters are either upper class and educated, or else charming cheeky scamps out of the cast of My Fair Lady. This works fine when he’s only talking about the former, but when, as here, he tries to talk about the common man it simply does not ring true. He is unable to make the people he is talking about sympathetic because he refuses to deal with any of their dark side. Nobody is genuinely lazy or hate-filled or stupid or dangerously short-tempered. The solitary villain seems motivated entirely out of slavering Evil, not out of anything recognisable from real social problems.

Pratchett does do better with the other half of the book: the story of the upper class. I’m very grateful for the focus on the University, which has not had so much attention since… well, maybe never, but certainly not since The Last Continent. The style of the series had moved on, and I had some reservations about the ability of the Wizards to fit into the grittier, more realistic world, but it is managed very well, and a greater sense of continuity is given to the institution (the events of Sourcery are finally acknowledged). Largely this is done by focusing the attention on only two characters, Ridcully and Stibbons, the former in particular benefiting greatly, while the minor characters fade into anonymity. Similarly, there is far more screentime than usual for Vetinari, who often is employed as a pop-up-from-behind-the-desk-to-explain dues ex machine, but who here is treated more sympathetically, and more realistically. I think a part of this is that, for once, we see Vetinari not as towering over others, but in the company of equals – Ridcully and Lady Margolotta – which makes him seem more a man and less a plot device.

Unfortunately, I’ve run out of praise, and I’ve got three criticisms left over. Firstly, not only the jokes but the whole of the writing style now seems flat – has Pratchett grown stale, or have I just read to much of it? He tried to inject novelty in places (and I noticed quite a few surprisingly unusual sentences in the book, where earlier we would have expected a simple familiar idiom), but often this failed. In particular, the character of Andy Shank felt pieced together from elsewhere, not only in personality, but in every sentence that took place when he was around. It felt lazy. More generally, Pratchett is not good at innovating characters, many of whom feel like old friends when they should not be – this is not as bad as in the recent Moist books (as I find Moist repellently reconstituted), but it did stop me from empathising with some characters as much as I should have liked. Glenda, for instance, is perfectly likeable, but she also feels a bit like half a dozen other characters that have been put in a blender to find the average (Agnes and Susan probably being the two largest components, with a dose of Magrat, among others).

Surprisingly, the opposite happened with old characters. The book was full not only with in-jokes but also with cameos of past characters, which in general I felt worked poorly. Sometimes this was not surprising – Dibbler hasn’t been engaging since, well, a very long time ago – but I was shocked by Vimes, who is a pale shadow of himself, even compared to his appearances in Monstrous Regiment and The Truth. Most problematic, however, was poor Rincewind, whose role was too large for a cameo and too small for a real character, and who never felt any of convincing, interesting, or actually the same person that we knew in the past.

Finally – whether because of these complaints of independently – I never really felt engaged emotionally. Oh, the conclusion is tense, and I felt a little for some characters at the end, but there was none of the real pathos that made Night Watch. This, I think, is the biggest reason I feel Pratchett is increasingly tired – the rich emotional engagement with characters that I felt in many earlier books just isn’t there. Meanwhile, the plots feel more contrived than they have done since the early days – although it should be said that the ending of this one isn’t that bad. It is, admittedly, not good, in its execution, but it isn’t the disaster that some of his recent books have turned into (most notably Monstrous Regiment, but also Going Postal, Thud, and Making Money, in my opinion).

That said, there are some promising signs. As I say, Pratchett is compensating for some of his weaknesses with other developments, and if future novels (however many they may be, and let us all pretend that there is no end of them in sight) retain the confidence and ambition of UA, the series will go on to new heights. If the book displays many of the faults that have emerged in the series (and it is to the credit of what is surely one of the greatest series of all time that anything at all is left of it after a staggering nearly forty volumes), it also shows us that those faults need not necessarily be fatal. Pratchett can do better than this book – and the fact that I can say that with confidence at this stage is, in a way, a great compliment to the promise the book shows. Before this, I admit I was beginning to suspect he could no longer do better.

This was really just for me to voice some thoughts about how the series is going… but while I’m here I may as well give some scores for the book:

Adrenaline: 3/5. To be honest, it’s mostly fairly slow and plodding. That said, by the time we reach the climactic sporting sequence, I was hooked. That section of tension and excitement lifts the book as a whole from a 2 to a 3.

Emotion: 2/5. Never really felt too great an investment in any of the characters; no great pathos. That said, I did at least feel I ought to be feeling something for them.

Thought: 3/5. It deals with Issues and Themes. It does so more subtly than you might expect. It doesn’t do so in much depth, or in a particularly challenging way.

Beauty: 3/5. Much of the prose is worn and cliché. There are, however, a lot of good lines in there, and one or two well-constructed scenes and clever mirrorings. The highlights, for me, were the psychiatry scene (which briefly rose to the level of ‘genuinely a little chilling’), and Vetinari’s moment of drunken honesty, at which I’m sure many fans will have cheered.

Craft: 3/5. In some ways, I’d have liked to have given it a 4 – the overall plot, the foreshadowings and allusions, were all very skilled. However, it’s let down by a certain lack of fizz on the sentence-by-sentence level.

Endearingness: 3/5. If anyone criticises it, I’ll stand up to its defence. I enjoyed reading it, and did so swiftly. That said, the lack of emotional engagement damaged its score here – if I had to curl up to a Discworld book, it wouldn’t be this one.

Originality: 3/5. I can honestly say that as I was reading through it, I didn’t expect it to turn out as it did. Well, some parts, clearly, but not all of it. In some ways this damaged its ability to appeal, but at the same time it gains marks for novelty. Yes, a lot of it is typical Discworld, but you can still see that he’s out there trying to do new things. Anyway, it seems unfair to judge a man by the standards of his other books – Discworld is still charmingly unusual in many ways, even if some of those ways remain constant between books. At the same time – nothing really ‘wow’ about it.

Composite: 3.00

Overall: 4/7: Not bad really. Wouldn’t recommend it to somebody starting Discworld. Would recommend to somebody who had read up to Night Watch and was doubting whether there would be anything new in the later books. Unreservedly glad I read it; not earth-shaking in any way.

Until the release of Monstrous Regiment I have bought and read every one of the ‘adult’, regular, Discworld books. That one marked a clear break in what I otherwise had thought of as consistently funny and thoughtful books.

To tell the truth I didn’t much enjoy Thief of Time either, but that was made up for by Night Watch being very good. Never much liked Going Postal or Thud! or Making Money though so at the arrival of this new one I decided I could just as well listen to it instead of have it take up shelf space.

The decision turned out to be the right one because, I’m sorry to say, Unseen Academicals has the feel of an unfinished work – a working draft, published too early. A few giggles do not make up a book and the football parts are not insightful in the way we are used to from Pratchett’s works.

Like the other Discworld audiobooks it is narrated by Tony Robinson, for me primarily known as Baldrick in all those Blackadder series’ and as the presenter of Time Team. Generally I think he does a good job but as differing voices for the cast goes he’s not transparent and the reader has to engage in some guesswork to understand who’s saying what and to whom, at times.

Go read some of his earlier books instead, like Night Watch or Moving Pictures or Small Gods or Reaper Man.

Mój skromny kawałek własnego miejsca w sieci odwiedzono ponad tysiąc razy… Nie tak znowu wiele, ale magiczna granica czterech cyfr została przekroczona. Fanfary!

W tym tygodniu będzie bez “Mam Talentu” (któremu w znacznej mierze te tysiąc wejść zawdzięczam, ale nikt nie musi o tym wiedzieć), bo wybrałam życie… Ale nie martwcie się, to na pewno długo nie potrwa. Co prawda złote czasy tego bloga raczej minęły (mam na myśli wrzesień), ale nie dam mu umrzeć. Może ilość przejdzie w jakość… nie, nie łudźmy się. Mam co do niego pewne plany, ale jak o tym napiszę, to nic z nich nie wyjdzie (vide: zmiana nagłówka).

Tak z innej gruchy, czytam ostatnio “Łups!” Pratchetta, jestem w 3/4 książki i dalej mnie kompletnie nie wciągnęła. Gdyby nie sentyment do Terry’ego, nawet bym jej chyba nie zaczynała. Przede wszystkim seria o Straży jest zdominowana przez Vimesa, który był całkiem ciekawą postacią, dopóki autor za bardzo go nie polubił (to niebezpieczna pułapka). Druga rzecz to poruszany problem: rasizm i bezsensowne walki – było i to wielokrotnie.
Nie chodzi o to, że jego książki robią się coraz bardziej poważne, bo np. dość wczesne “Pomniejsze bóstwa” to moim zdaniem ogromnie smutna książka, a bardzo mi się podobała. Chodzi bardziej o to, że rzeczy, które T.P. po mistrzowsku ujmował kiedyś w krótkich, celnych zdaniach, teraz są rozpisywane na całe książki. Niestety, w mało porywający dla mnie sposób.
Trochę szkoda.

Ignore the 'look inside' thing.

To say Terry Pratchett is a literary genius is, if I may quote from Neil Gaiman, like saying Jupiter is larger than a duck. It’s true, but it’s so much more than that. Unseen Academicals is further proof of this.

Football (soccer to us heathen Americans), has been banned in Ankh-Morpork and now, for several reasons, the Patrician is lifting the ban, but insisting that the game should be played within rules. That alone has potential for a good book, but when you add in an insecure goblin with issues, two Archchancellors, a refined vampire, and a pack of football hooligans, you get something unique and fascinating.

The book has all the fast humor and intelligence that you’ve come to expect with Discworld novels. There’s quite a bit more musing on religion than one usually sees, but that’s prefectly fine with me.

I have the feeling this is one of those books that’s going to become a favorite of mine. It’s certainly one I’m going to have to read through more than once to make sure I get all the nuance. But you know what? I’ll take reading any Pratchett book more than once over reading most fantasy even one time!

Mais à la foire à l’embauche, la Mort le remarque et l’emporte sur son cheval Bigadin. Il faut la comprendre : elle a décidé de faire la vie; avec un bon commis, elle pourrait partager le travail quotidien, ce qui lui laisserait des loisirs.
Un grand destin attend donc Mortimer. Mais… est-ce bien raisonnable ?
Un scénario qui décoiffe, une distribution Prestigieuse et… Peut-être… une apparition exceptionnelle de l’illustre Rincevent.

Comme je vous l’avais expliqué dans l’article sur la série du Disque-Monde, il est toujours question du même univers. Et pour le moment, les trois premiers tomes n’ont eu qu’un seul personnage récurrent… Un indice ? VOUS ETES SUR D’EN VOULOIR UN ? Non, non je ne crie pas sur vous, mais c’est bien de cette manière que La Mort parle. Il s’adresse (eh oui il est de sexe masculin) aux âmes qu’il récolte et aux mages ainsi. Donc, disais-je, La Mort est le seul personnage à ne pas avoir eu d’histoire propre, alors même qu’il est un personnage qui apparaitra dans la quasi-totalite des tomes. C’est donc chose faite avec Mortimer, quatrième tome de la saga du Disque-Monde.

Encore un roman étonnant et pleins de surprises. De nouveaux personnages font leur apparition, et cette histoire nous permet de connaitre un peu plus le personnage de La Mort. Personnage étonnant en effet, qui de prime abord ne semble pas capable de comprendre les émotions humaines (un squelette n’est pas pourvu de tout le réseau de glandes que l’humain moyen possède). Et la où Terry Pratchett nous surprend encore plus qu’à l’habitude c’est sa façon qu’il a de jouer avec le personnage. Je ne parle pas de l’attitude chevaleresque de Mortimer, ni des risques que Malik, le plus grand mage de l’histoire du Disque-Monde et fondateur de l’Universite Invisible, prend en retournant dans le monde des vivants, ni d’Ysabell, fille de La Mort (oui oui, il a une fille), qui ferait tout par amour pour l’apprenti de son père, mais bien de l’attitude de la mort elle-même, pardon, de La Mort lui-même. Il le ferait presque passer pour quelqu’un d’humain (imaginez La Mort en cuistot…).

En conclusion, Terry Pratchett signe, une nouvelle fois un très bon livre, plein de fantasy et d’originalité. Un livre que je vous conseille pour passer un bon moment.

I’ve bragged a time or two about owning a nifty little Kindle. It’s a truly impressive device! I like it so much, I’ve largely eliminated my print library and replaced books with Kindle downloads. It’s really, really good.

But I am confused by something regarding the Kindle, and that’s the price of some of the titles.

Consider, for example, Unseen Academicals, the new Discworld novel from Terry Pratchett. The hardcover version on Amazon is currently $14.03. Not bad, actually. That’s a really good price, in fact, for a hardcover new release novel! But the Kindle version is $14.29. Buh?

There’s other instances where the publisher has raised the price on Kindle versions of the books, including those by Pratchett and Harry Turtledove, another favorite of mine. Several of their books have increased by anywhere from 50 cents to a couple dollars. Many of them now have the same price as the print editions.

I don’t really understand why the publishers are doing this. Surely a print copy of a book takes more time, effort and money for them to produce than a digital copy of it. Any digital copies they sell are pure gravy. So why are they getting greedy and jacking up the prices or, in the case of Unseen Academicals, pricing the digital copy higher than the print copy?

I’ll still buy books, and I’ll still buy the Kindle versions for preference, but this is really just baffling to me.

Zatem rozpoczynasz grę w miejscu o którym wyżej napisałem, a pierwsze minuty po przebudzeniu spędzasz na opanowywaniu swojej odrobinę okaleczonej przez amnezję motoryki. Wiesz już że masz być niedobry i wstrętny, wiesz że masz pomścić poprzedniego co taki był- plan obmyślisz potem, póki co nie jest oryginalnie i przebiegle, ale zło nie odpuszcza nikomu, dopadając wcześniej czy później każdego!
Naj-sam-wpierw Twym nikczemnym zadaniem jest obicie jednego z podwładnych, tego co robi za błazna i jak każdy królewski błazen jest niezwykle irytujący, a żeby było zabawniej te samo zadanie dajesz swoim podwładnym… Co by nie myślał, że życie będzie miał z Tobą lekkie.

A oni…
Pod swoje władanie dostajesz zatem „gejzery” wypełnione czymś co najłatwiej nazwać „esencją”, „esencja” to energia, którą otrzymujesz po zgładzeniu żywej istoty niezależnie od jej wielkości. Nie ma więc znaczenia czy ubijesz żuka, żabę, owcę (co robisz najchętniej, jako że są takie urocze), człowieka, trolla, czy inne mistyczno-fantastyczne stworzenie których pełno w tej obrzydliwie słodkiej krainie (choć za różne stwory, dostajesz różne gatunki esencji). W zasadzie to zaczyna Cię drażnić, że jest taka idealna i faktycznie masz ochotę coś zniszczyć.
By nie odbiegać jednak od jakże istotnego tematu Twojej armii: owa zebrana esencja, ma różne barwy- pośrednio połączone z pewnymi żywiołami, czy też siłami. Zepsuta Żółć, krwista czerwień, toksyczna zieleń i dławiący błękit- zapytasz pewnie: na co to? Każdy kolor odpowiada pewnym „gejzerom” i zdobywasz go z konkretnych istot, „gejzery” znów przywołują konkretne rodzaje Twych okrutnych i potężnych demonów!
(w zasadzie to One nie są potężne, dodatkowo trochę też durne w sumie to są małe i chuderlawe, mózgami też nie grzeszą… ale jakże niezwykle wierne i oddane- a to tu najważniejsze bowiem armia Złego odda za Niego życie bez wahania!)
I tak tu jest. By jednak uwolnić Twe piekielne ogary o zróżnicowanych mocach niezbędne są ich wylęgarnie, które znajdziesz gdzieś na ziemiach, które wcześniej czy później będziesz podbijał. Mimo, że masz wolną rękę w eksplorowaniu sympatycznego świata, do niektórych miejsc dostaniesz się tylko z pomocą swoich Minionów o konkretnych zdolnościach. Tylko zielone mogą niszczyć toksyczne rośliny i rozpędzać trucizny (dodatkowo sprytnie robią się niewidzialne i sztyletują wrogów po plecach, jakże to nikczemne), czerwone pożerają płomień i miotają we wrogów płonącymi kulami siarki, a niebieskie kroczą po wodzie i potrafią wskrzeszać, niczym sami wiecie Kto. Pozostają więc tylko żółte, podstawowe- lecz niezastąpione i dostępne już od początku, najsilniejsze, najokrutniejsze i jedyne które ubierają się w elementy rynsztunku po zgładzonych wrogach (pozostali też coś zakładają, ale efekty wizualnego tego są raczej znikome).
Z braku laku założą na głowę też dynię, czy czapkę kucharską- jak już mówiłem, nie są zbyt rozgarnięte i nie wiedzą że dynią to „se mogą”.
Wielkość Twojej armii zwiększa się wraz ze zbieraniem nowych posągów (mamy różne rodzaje, są takie które dodają energii/many na stałe, są nowym czarem, albo wspomniane przed wtrąceniem), poukrywane skrzętnie po całej krainie. Takie posągi chłopaki biorą na barki i zanoszą do portalu, dzięki którym łatwiej podróżować po świecie. Co znalazłeś możesz obejrzeć w swojej wieży do której masz dostęp przez cały czas trwania gry, a co tam jest?
Czarna wieża to : Twoja okrutna i nikczemna Pani- jeśli już jakąś uwiedziesz swoim niewiele mówiącym (w bezpośrednim znaczeniu tego słowa i pośrednim) licem, sala tronowa, serce podziemi przy którym spoczywają wylęgarnie, kuźnia w której kosztem życia podwładnych i zdobytych skarbów możesz wytopić nowe magiczne artefakty, utwardzić zbroję, dodać czar regeneracji na napierśnik, usprawnić rynsztunek swoich siepaczy itp.- wszystko za sprawą kombinacji liczb podwładnych jakiegoś rodzaju, który wyślesz do kotła, albo idziesz tam by po prostu popatrzeć jak radośnie wskakują na bombę do płynnej stali.
Arena na której możesz wyzwać każdą pokonaną i nędzną jednostkę-przy okazji zdobyć „esencję”, kaski dla Żółtych, czy kilka srebrników.
U góry pokoje do których zyskasz dostęp w późniejszym etapie gry i dodatkowo opcja “Pimp Up My Tower!”. Złotem wykupujesz nowe lansiarskie ozdoby do swojej z początku zapuszczonej i meliniarskiej wieży, a tu do wyboru: więcej kolców, jeszcze więcej kolców, banery, chimery, trony, zwieńczenia i kolce… Generalnie to jest na co wydawać pieniążki, a zdobywasz je jak już mówiłem z poległych, albo z plądrowania!
Fajnie? Wpuszczasz hołotę do wioski i kolejno ładujesz ich w każde z domostw. Wynoszą ze środka co najlepsze, eliksiry, rynsztunek, pieniążki, oraz czasem partyzantem zachlewają pałę. Wychodzą wtedy z takimi świecącymi oczkami i oddają mocz tuż przed progiem. Urocze, prawda?
W tej grze po prostu chcesz być złym, nie widzę sensu bycia dobrym w grze, w której założenie to bycie złym: możesz co prawda być bardziej lub mniej złym, jednak skoro już masz szansę i nie dostajesz XP za cudowne, praworządne odpowiedzi i działania jak w Baldurs Gate, a wręcz odwrotnie- dostajesz achievmenty i tytuły za bycie okrutnym, więc bądź złym do szpiku…. Niech klękają przed Tobą niewierni!
Kradnij jedzenie, morduj, grab, pal i gwałć!
Nie ma litości w końcu „poprzedniego” ubili… Odpłać im tym na co zasługują!

Bad to the bone!
Wbrew temu co można sądzić po tym co napisałem powyżej, gra nie jest okrutna- definitywnie odwrotnie (choć dzieciom do lat 12 jej raczej nie polecam). Pełna czarnego humoru, cynicznych tekstów narratora i Twej pani na temat życia, istot i środowiska – polecam na chandrę ich reakcje na spotkania z duchami Elfów.
Sam wygląd Minionów budzi śmiech, te czapki, peruki, ganianie z ręka zombiaka. Warto się przyglądać takim perełkom, warto też obserwować świat, które nie jest ogromny, aczkolwiek są w nim miejsca sielankowe, są też szare lasy i ponure bagna, są lochy i miasta… Są pola dyni i słoneczników, które chcesz niszczyć, a Twoje stado „szarańczy” wygląda śmiechowo podczas pogromu w słonecznikach.
W zasadzie podczas grania to chce się niszczyć wszystko, gra daje ogromną frajdę, totalnie rozładowywuje napięcie- momentami może i monotonna, bo biegniesz 30 minut przez jaskinie, czy tunele, ale karykatury zepsutych herosów, świat z drugiej strony lustra- powykręcany i chory jak w najgorszej możliwej wizji Alicji z Krainy Czarów. Żarłoczne, zepsute hobbity i ich pękato-szalony król, Oberon pochłonięty własnymi koszmarami, łaknące krwii jednorożce. W pewnym momencie zdajemy sobie sprawę, że w tym świecie słodkim i karmelkowym zdarzają się istoty bardziej pożarte złem niż my…
Nie jest to horror zdecydowanie, raczej gra zręcznościowa z elementami RPG, doprawiona szczyptą strategicznego zmysłu i posypana ogromną porcją angielskiego humoru dla dojrzalszej części graczy.

Światła magii, skrzek Minionów i mechanika
Grafika jest przyjemna i stara się czerpać z każdej gamy kolorów, jest odrobinę kanciasto i sztywnie (vide poruszanie bohatera), ale przejrzyście i ciekawie. Stworzonka (mój ulubiony to Melvin), twarze, owce, kolory, światła – wszystko jest ładne i nie ma co oczekiwać graficznych fajerwerków. Jest schludnie- upiększa to ogromna porcja zepsutego humoru bez zębów
Ogromne brawa za dźwięki i głosy minionów, doradcy i błazna, ton i wysokość dźwięków wydawanych przez ich malutkie struny głosowe- to jest przepiękne, ktoś przyłożył ogromne starania by nasze Impy brzmiały tak jak to sobie wyobrażaliśmy- skrzekliwie, wysoko i zabawnie! Maluchy rzucają proste teksty pełne miłości do swojego Pana typu „For You!” „For Overlord!” „Master, Treasure!”, są tak fajne i zabawne , że od czasu do czasu trzeba je kopnąć albo wysłać do garka (pokochałem je już na wstępie, małe, wredne, zepsute i niszczące wszystko co popadnie)…
Dalej mamy przejrzyste menu, łatwy do zapamiętania projekt wieży, odrobinę pokręcony świat, który jednak dzięki portalom jest prosty do ogarnięcia- łatwo dostać się do wszystkich najważniejszych miejsc, gdzie zwykle przy teleportowaniu, albo po jakiejś animacji następuje save.
Są jednak i problemy. Dla przykładu: walka- ogromnie brakuje możliwości bloku, zostaje tylko walenie na pałę i robienie szybkich uników przy „targetowaniu” na postaci, cios jest jeden – więc mashujemy jak leci. Dostajemy za to kilka przyjemnych czarów, które rozwijamy poprzez daleko u góry omawiane „Zagubione posągi”- jest magiczna tarcza, zwolnienie, szał, jest też fireball (nie ma to jak podpalić zboże kiedy wew. ktoś się kryje). Standardowo i wystarczająco, hp i mp uzupełniane poprzez poświęcanie minionów na ołtarzach, eliksiry, oraz powrót do wieży.
Problem jest również z kontrolowaniem minionów, czasem chcesz zrobić jakąś szczwaną akcję typu: szybkie zmienianie typu gobasów trigerem, dawanie komend, „guard place” by czerwoni się ostrzeliwali, a biali leczyli i szybkiego manipulowanie prawym drążkiem by manualnie gdzieś doprowadzić żółtych (jest możliwość sterowania gałką, jak też dawania prostych komend- akcja i powrót pod dwoma przyciskami) sprawia, że się w tym gubimy i wychodzi kupa. AI stworzonek też głupkowate, pytanie czy chodzi o celowość czy po prostu braki- zdarza się że gupole się gdzieś zgubią, albo wejdą za Tobą do wody, czy popełnią jakieś inne głupstwo… wtedy klops.

W klimacie gra nawiązuje bezpośrednio do klasyki filmów i książek fantasy: pełna prostej symboliki, Tolkienowskich stworzeń, czy Szekspirowskich tekstów i bohaterów, nie mogło się też obyć bez mitologii. Za co wielki plus, dostajemy misz-masz fantasy w którym mamy szansę być kimś podłym.
Ja tam się starałem jak mogłem i zbierałem punkty korupcji jak leci (poziom naszego zepsucia w grze)- polecam bycie złym, bezkonsekwencyjne dręczenie świata to piękna sprawa. Przymknijcie oko na nierozbudowaną fabułę, posłuchajcie czystej miłości wypowiadanej przez kurdupli, spalcie wioskę, okradajcie, bijcie i cieszcie się z bycia złym- świat widziany z innej perspektywy jest również piękny!

Ps. Tekst pisany chyba półtora roku temu, ale wrzucony w związku z ostatnim objawieniem drugiej części tej kapitalnej gry, którą zrecenzuje w przyszłości, tak byście mogli mieć całościowy pogląd na serię Overlord.

This is a Witches novel, and sees Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg travelling to Ankh-Morpork to see an opera. Yet there are strange goings-on in the opera house. There are a series of murders and money disappearing out the window. It seems that there is an Opera Ghost, who likes to leave notes that just say: “Ha ha, ha ha, ha ha!!!!!” The fear is rife in the opera, but the show must go on. So Granny sets herself up to investigate, while the show goes on, and unmasks the Opera Ghost.

This is classic Pratchett. I love the Witches novels. Both Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax are hilarious. This is a very funny take on The Phantom of the Opera – mainly mocking the idea that a small mask that only covers the eyes would hide someones identity. Death features in this book as well, and he is probably my favourite character. Pretty much all he says is funny, and I enjoyed his game of poker with Granny.

Pratchett yet again transported me to Ankh-Morpork and incorporated some of the funniest characters in this adventure. Of course it is unrealistic, but it is an amazing fantasy novel. I have no complaints and as ever, I am eager for the next Pratchett book. This is a great series, full of adventure, humour and amazing characters. I highly recommend this novel. It is very, very good.

I have completed translation of Terry Pratchett’s Nation (it is now being edited), and have started The Children’s Book by A.S.Byatt. It is huge – 600 pages, about the same size as Iris Murdoch’s The Philosopher’s Pupil which I have translated last year. The Children’s Book was shortlisted for Booker prize. Translators from half a dozen countries are working on it right now, and I have been included into a mailing list for The Children’s Book translators worldwide, with participation of A.S.Byatt herself. By the way, this Wikipedia article says that A.S.Byatt was actually influenced by Murdoch, and that the novelist Margaret Drabble is her sister, which  I did not know before. I read something by Drabble and I thought she writes, in fact, very much like Murdoch, but more… drab. The pun is intended. In my opinion, The Children’s Book is not like anything by Murdoch at all, at least I very much hope so. I will not survive another 600 pages of dark and depressive stuff like The Philosopher’s Pupil. The Children’s Book story is not all roses either, but at least it’s less… existential? and more lifelike. The work on it will be pure joy, anyway. Life is good.

This is book 18 in the Discworld series, and as enjoyable as the rest. In this novel we are taken on an adventure with the not-so-great wizard Rincewind. Known to get himself into trouble, he finds himself a pawn in the god’s game. Sent by the wizards at Unseen University Rincewind ends up in an unknown kingdom were they were planning a very civilised revolution. He is believed to be The Great Wizard, and again, through running away he gives off this impression. Working alongside Cohen the Barbarian – not that either realise it – they embark on an adventure to take over the Empire and see which god is going to win their game.

I love this series. I have really enjoyed all of them, and this one is no exception. Rincewind novels make me laugh because he finds himself in the oddest situations and yet still comes out looking like a hero. I particularly enjoyed the return of Two Flower and Cohen the Barbarian. The Barbarian Horde were probably my favourite characters because they were all in their 90s or older and yet won many battles and still sniggered at sexual innuendoes. Their whole mentality and them trying to become ‘civilised’ was great reading.

I enjoyed the storyline of this book too. Emperors dying, the Red Army rising out of the ground, and a polite revolution – it was good fun. As ever, Pratchett leads headlong into the Discworld and his writing is so good he makes it seem real. He is witty, writes a good adventure and well worth reading.

As with his other novels, there is not a lot I can complain about – this is just a really good story that I enjoyed immensely. The Discworld books are high on my list of recommendations.
