Günstige weil gute Auto-Führerschein-Ausbildung in München

The Allegations:

The 750-page report examines complaints of abuse of over 320 children.

It involved a representative sample of 46 priests in the Dublin Archdiocese between 1975 and 2004.

It said the archdiocese obsessively covered up widespread sexual abuse of children by priests until the mid-1990s.

The greatest scandal here is not the abuse itself, as horrific as that is. The greatest disgrace is that the leaders of this “church” thought the reputation of their organization was more important than the life, health and dignity of the children placed under its care. A church that can do that does not deserve to be called a church. Shut it down. Close the doors. Auction off the property and give it to the abused. The day that happens and the guilty priests walk through town in sackcloth and ashes I’ll think about changing my assessment. This institution has lost all credibility in a world that hates above all else religious hypocrisy. This same church that stands against divorce, homosexuality, and abortion is also famous for pedophilia. It’s over guys. No one believes you anymore. You are a sad and twisted joke.

After the latest round of revelations of pedophilia in Ireland, I think it’s time to provide some practical help for horny Catholic priests. Here are some ideas:

Let’s set up a public fund they can use to go on a “date” when they feel the urge. Wouldn’t that be better than what they have been doing?

Go back to the practice of keeping live-in girlfriends, which was perfectly acceptable back in the old days (Middle Ages). That would definitely be more healthy.

Make sure they all have a live Internet connection in a secluded corner of their church or monastery where they can view porn. However, install filtering software that blocks child porn. Wouldn’t that be better than abusing helpless children? I think so.

Online intimate dating services for priests? Totally anonymous and confidential.

Matthew 18:8.

In the 16th century Martin Luther had a matchmaking service for priests and nuns who wanted out of callings for which they were manifestly unsuited. Maybe we should start that up again.

Deal with the problem using the resources of the Christian faith. I know that is a ridiculous notion, because it would involve admitting that there is a problem. In the Catholic Church there are no problems.

I offer this final suggestion as playful irony only, because it obviously goes beyond all bounds of propriety and is not even remotely possible. In fact, it is more evil than any of the other options even though it could arguably make a pretty significant dent in them: let Catholic priests get married!

Today’s Programming Praxis problem is an easy one. We’re supposed to give the prices of four items, that both sum up and multiply to $7.11. Let’s get started.

While we could just do a brute force test on all possible combinations, this would take rather long. So in order to speed things up we only check numbers that are a proper divisor of $7.11.

divs :: [Int]
divs = [x | x <- [1..711], mod (711 * 10^6) x == 0]

Once we have the divisors, solving the problem becomes a fairly trivial list comprehension (the <= bits are another optimization to eliminate some identical combinations).

main :: IO ()

                          a + b + c + d == 711,
                          a * b * c * d == 711 * 10^6]

If we run this, we find there is only one combination that satisfies both requirements.

(Foto: CC Jonathan Stevens, wikimedia)

Was sagt also mein kleiner Helfer „Best of Gott“ dazu?

(Foto: CC PinkMoose, Flickr)

Natürlich gibt es noch die klassische Variante, der die meisten von Haus aus nahe stehen: Den Monotheismus mit the one and only… Mr. GOTT.

In jedem Sinne.

Privat, beruflich, professionell.

Törichten, zermürbenden Hin- und – Her- Geredes.

Hoffnung. Erwartung. Vorfreude. Friedlichere Zeiten.

The BBC did a special on healthcare around the world and in one segment they spoke with a Christian

The BBC did a special on healthcare around the world and in one segment they spoke with a Christian pastor in Arizona.

This pastor presented the following reasoning for rejecting social healthcare: He does not think socialism is biblical. The interviewer asked why a socialized program that helped people did not qualify as biblical. After all, it was helping the poor and loving the neighbor. The pastor’s answer was the following:

“The Bible says that we should love people from the heart, not based on the law. But a social program makes us love others by obedience to the law and it is a form of legalism.”

This is terrible. It’s embarrassing. It’s horrible. Why?

It’s terrible because the Bible does not say that we should only love people from the hart and not based on the law. If you think it does then please show me the passage that makes this point, because I have never seen it.

It’s an embarrassingly simple logical fallacy. This pastor (and many others) confuse the biblical theological discussion about law and salvation with the role of law in society, merely because the terminology is similar. But obviously these are different topics. Law in the New Testament pertains to God’s moral requirements which humans can never achieve. Against this background Christ is presented as God’s gracious provision for salvation. The laws of a modern nation are pragmatic human arrangements that help us create a good society. It is not relevant whether they are practiced from the heart or not. The relevant question is whether they uphold justice.

By the pastor’s reasoning we should not have any laws, for they all require “legalistic” obedience. I wonder what his position is on abortion? I hope he agrees with me that there ought to be a law against it.

Finally, to say that we should not enact a pragmatic solution to a problem because the problem must be resolved “from the heart” has the convenient effect of removing all social accountability. For who can be forced to build a better society “from the heart”? By definition, no one. Thus we do nothing. We just sit back and keep anything productive from occurring because God forbid we become legalists.

There may be good arguments against socialized medicine. My point here is not to deny that. But this argument is not one of them.

I begin with a video (where I say among other things that I’ve been working for two years on a project about teaching, writing about, and publishing/presenting in the digital humanities and this raises contradictions about vernacular, audience, duration, translation and more) all to be demonstrated in this post where I perform and re-present and preserve what will be at talk on November 23:

But YouTube cut me off, darn it! (as it so often does when you record from your monitor), so I will finish my intro verbally, in the room, face-to-face, there our flesh connected:

“…Broadening the Digital Humanities: The Vectors-IML NEH Summer Institute on Multimodal Scholarship and supported by ‘a planning grant from the Mellon Foundation to develop a proposal for a multi-university digital hub in support of work in visual culture. She will be working with scholars from Brown, NYU, Rochester and UC-San Diego.’

And in part 3 of this talk, I will conclude with a discussion of the implications of my project for teaching, research and publishing in the ‘digital humanities.’”

Was driving back from the high north country late last night with my dad and we got to talking like two guys up way past their bedtime do. Various viewpoints were expressed, politely, tiredly. In general outlook we are largely on the same team; we just differ (sometimes vastly) on how to put it into practice.

The details are not of much importance. Fundamentally, my father is eminently willing to engage in the mucky day-to-day praxis of putting political ideas into actual practice. I am far more fastidious, very reluctant to get my hands dirty, at least not without a full supply of Lava soap on hand. And is there any Lava soap yet invented that can get the greasy stain of politics off your hands? I doubt it.

But rather than re-invent the wheel, I will let Plato speak for me (though in place of philosophy I might insert writing, or literature, or combine the three):

Then there remains, Adeimantus, only a very small group who consort with philosophy in a way that’s worthy of her . . . Now, the members of this small group have tasted how sweet and how blessed a possession philosophy is, and at the same time they’ve also seen the madness of the majority and realized, in a word, that hardly anyone acts sanely in public affairs and that there is no ally with whom they might go to the aid of justice and survive, that instead they’d perish before they could profit either their city or their friends and be useless to themselves and others, just like a man who has fallen among wild animals and is neither willing to join them in doing injustice nor sufficiently strong to oppose the general savagery alone. Taking all this into account, they lead a quiet life and do their own work. Thus, like someone who takes refuge under a little wall from a storm of dust or hail driven by the wind, the philosopher–seeing others filled with lawlessness–is satisfied if he can somehow lead his present life free from injustice and impious acts and depart from it with good hope, blameless and content.

–Republic (496a-497a)

Quote from Plato spotted, serendipitously, this morning at Maverick Philosopher.

Dianne Conrad and Bruce Spencer – Distance Education Online: A forum for Adult Education? Can

Dianne Conrad and Bruce Spencer – Distance Education Online: A forum for Adult Education?

Can distance education in its current online form serve the social purposes of adult education that demand authenticity, openness, critical thinking, purposeful and respectful reflection, and the promotion of participative democracy and citizenship? With the advent of collaborative online learning, distance education has moved from individualized and often isolated study to dynamic, interactive exchanges that, properly facilitated, encourage knowledge building, teamwork, and communication skills. The groundwork has been laid for social purpose educational practices and outcomes.

Current distance education emphasizes social, communication-based, and constructivist learning… The creation of community simulates for online learners the comforts of home and provides a safe climate, an atmosphere of trust and respect, and invitation for intellectual exchange, and a gathering place for like-minded individuals who are sharing a journey that includes similar activities, purpose, and goals.

Geoff Peruniak and Rick Powell – Coming to Terms with Prior Learning Assessment

PLA concerns informal learning; that is, learning not formerly attested to by an accredited educational institution. PLA is a means by which informal and nonformal learning can be recognized by accredited programs of study. …

There is certainly a constituency within the Canadian academic community that is fundamentally opposed to PLA. They have argued that university-led learning can take place only in a classroom and when taught by an academic. Although this school of thought is undoubtedly a barrier to the acceptance of PLA, it is probably not critical because a number of respected Canadian universities have formally acknowledged PLA as legitimate – at least in principle. A much more serious barrier is the challenge of PLA to academics’ notions of their educational role – even those who might accept PLA in principle.

Academics have traditionally viewed their educational roles of teaching and student assessment as an organic whole. The acceptance of PLA as an integral practice rather than a marginal practice means unpacking these educational functions. The discomfort of academics is understandable. A necessary but usually tiresome and unrewarding aspect of their university roles now comes to the forefront. Moreover, one must attest to what one has not taught.

In a conventional university setting, formal course learning objective and expectations are not usually needed. They are implied by the course syllabi and reinforced through the process of classroom instruction. Indeed academics’ take on course objectives may undergo change as a result of the classroom experience. Formalizing course objectives and learning expectations has not traditionally been emphasized. Also, some forms of PLA (e.g., portfolio-based) are assessed by panels: Collective assessment is a foreign experience to most academics. When PLA becomes an integral, rather than a marginal, practice for assessment and attestation, it extends beyond the comfort zone of even the most sympathetic academics.

Allan Quigley – What Does It Mean to Be a “Professional”? The Challenges of Professionalization for Adult Literacy and Basic Education

Schon (1983) found that the world’s top professionals were not necessarily those with the most prestigious certificates, but that the best-of-the-best had truly mastered ways to learn from all aspects of practice. The could critically reflect on what they had learned through their own experience, from the literature, and from others; and the could internalize both theory and practice into their current work. Schon argued for practitioner critical reflection. No external list of requirements will force striving for excellence; no standardization will force professionalization. The energy for literacy professionalism needs to be placed in enhancing what we do well now. This can be seen as a praxis approach and is suggested as a way forward.

Schon, D. (1983). The reflective practitioner: How professionals think in action. New York: Basic Books.

Mohamed Hrimech & Nicole Tremblay – Training of Adult Educators in Quebec

The right to education for all has yet to be recognized for adults, and the means to implement it are scarce. The fight for this right is far from being on the agenda in today’s social and economic context. Cruikshank (1998) suggested that adult educators who still believe in adult education in terms of social justice must be alert to the dangers of this new reality of corporate training. Today’s globalization, combined with the development of distance education and an increasingly present virtual world brings its share of upheavals to the customary training of adult educators. How relevant are our lengthy graduate programs with all their academic and time constraints when the clientele is increasingly made of learner-consumers who are used to quick changes, on the lookout for tailor-made, small, and fast courses. One wonders whether our universities have responded quickly enough compared to private training services for adult educators. Competition is great from private consultation companies, internal training departments, and professional colleges that provide their own continuing education to their members and training to instructors. Consider the many catalogues of seminars and workshops published by private training organizations. Moreover, their training is often offered on very appealing and fairly informal premises.

Denis Haughey – Not Waving But Drowning: Canadian University Extension for Social change Revisited

Edwards and Miller (2000), in looking at issues in contemporary adult education and lifelong learning, also reinforced the crucial point that in lifelong learning greater emphasis is placed upon learner control and what goes on outside the educational institution; thus, placing boundaries around that learning and creating spaces for learning in the face of other demands becomes problematic. Learning can be adopted as part of lifestyle rather than arising from a need for enlightenment. Foley (2001) pointed out that extremely vital and comprehensive learning and teaching for social purposes is taking place not only in educational institutions, but in the workplace, families, communities, the mass media, and social movements. Increasingly, the new terrain is outside of the formal university setting and requires a new understanding of the role of the adult educator.

Maurice Taylor & Adrian Blunt – Towards a Canadian Research Culture in Adult Literacy Learning

Two dialogical problems persist to shape and define the culture and common spaces occupied by literacy researchers. Dialogism, according to Bakhtin (1981), is the occurence of opposing positions among social actors, positions that are permanently irresolvable; they are foundational positions that are self-affirming and sustain resistance to the positions of others. The first dialogical problem is the difference in priorities between practitioner-researchers in the field and researchers in the academe. Typically practitioners value most highly research that focuses directly on the problems that they encounter in their daily work. They tend to see concrete solutions to improve practice; that is, strategies to enhance the effectiveness of instruction and the achievement of community program and individual learners’ goals. Although academic researchers may espouse similar pragmatic outcomes for their research, as social scientists they must also use abstractions of reality to develop theory, seek conceptual understandings that will allow research findings to be extended beyond micro-level concerns, and seek understandings and findings to inform policy and program development at the macro-societal level.

The second sphere of dialogism is apparent in discourses on the purposes and valuing of adult literacy education in society. On one hand, literacy is highly valued and resources are provided for homo economicus, “an actor whose salient criterion is an economic calculus, and who is educated for productive roles in the commercial world” (Blunt, 2001, p. 103). On the other hand, resources are withheld and literacy education is not provided for homo literatus, “an actor who thinks as a person-in-the-community, … [with] multiple roles in society, [who values] person-within-the community relations, and … [who acts] to meet valued labour market demands” (p. 103).

Both dialogisms demonstrate how social practices in literacy work are linked to ideological positions, which in turn are linked to social sites and communities. The metaphor of a mosaic to describe the culture of research is as valid and problematic for the field as it is a national metaphor to describe and construct Canadian national identity and social cohesion.

Shahrzad Mojab – Adult Education Without Borders

We live in a very troubled world: The conditions that sustain life, both human and non-human, are seriously deteriorating; human beings, or rather small sections of them, have created conditions that disrupt the ability of living beings on the planet to reproduce the conditions of their (co)existence. The modern institutions of the market and nation together with institutions such as patriarchy, state, and religion are at work in creating these conditions. The ever-growing rule of the capitalist market – globalization – destroys borders but creates new boundaries that sharply divide the world’s haves and have-nots. If this characterization of the our world is accurate, the most urgent question for us would be the role of adult education. If we indeed witness a serious turn in the history of the world, how do we envisage adult education?

Freud had made it abundantly clear that a child’s parents influence his or her development dra

Freud had made it abundantly clear that a child’s parents influence his or her development dramatically. Erikson pointed out that children influence their parents’ development as well. The arrival of children, for example, into a couple’s life, changes that life considerably, and moves the new parents along their developmental paths.

Deutch (1945) proposed that parenthood represents the crucial, positive fulfillment of a woman’s needs. Although I don’t agree completely with this statement, I definitely can say that motherhood has fulfilled most of my needs leaving me, most of the time, exhausted.

I found myself pregnant on the spring of 2006. The hormone Oxytocin was working in me more than usual. I loved being pregnant. I dreamed about the baby almost every night. On November 5, 2006 I met my precious daughter. It wasn’t what I hoped for, or; what the books told me to expect. Although I wrote a meticulous birthing plan, the cruel c-section was what brought my daughter into the world. I didn’t have any corporal contact with my daughter the first hours of her life. Her first feeding was done by a nurse. This set the beginning of one of the most difficult stages of my life, wanting to breastfeed my baby. I didn’t have a vaginal labor or a distension of the cervix and I didn’t breastfeed for a long time but I can certainly say that I felt and I am still feeling “the mother instinct”.

My micro-system, now including a third person was full of joy. I kept myself close to this system the first weeks with the exception of few interactions with the meso, exo and macrosystem. After bonding closely with my daughter I started feeling the “normal crazy” symptoms. I felt I was loosing my sanity. For example, when bathing my baby I suddenly felt the need of taking her out because she could drown. As Angela McBride mentioned in her book, recognizing the intensity of an emotion does not mean that it will be acted out in a non-constructive way, in fact, emotional self-awareness is the first step toward impulse control. I believed that was what happened that day, self-awareness.

The “normal crazy” behaviors have been around with me for quite a bit. Since I gave birth I have been struggling with my “stored issues” from childhood and adolescent years. Siegel in 2001 mentioned that carefully conducted scientific studies have shown us that it is not what happened to you that matters most in determining how you raise your children; instead, it is how you have come to make sense of your early life experiences that is most robust predictor of how your children will become attached to you. I am getting strong.

The parental role has been neglected for many reasons. It has been ignored or deemphasized because of the societal assumption that all women just knew how to do it (Hrdy, 1999). I have been working with children for the last ten years; however nothing prepared me for motherhood. It has been the help and the emotional, informational and instrumental/tangible support (H. Heath, 2004) from my husband, friends and family what has helped me to fulfilled the six expectations of parents; nurture, protect, love, guide and teach, design the environment and be an spiritual model to my daughter. I strongly believe that the key concept for parenting is support. Erik Erikson hypothesized in 1950 that people needed a fund of “traditional reassurance“(emotional support) to resolve the crisis of the generative (parenting) stage.

I once read in an article that all motherhood emotions are universal. I don’t agree. I believe that every mother is struggling with different emotions at different stages of their lives. I will define my emotions in motherhood as a rollercoaster. Although the majority of the time I feel excited and full of energy, few times; I feel like putting me in “time out”, just for me. All emotions cannot be handled constructively all the time, but working in that direction should be a goal for a mother (McBride, 1977).

Time flies. I have survived the newborn and early infancy stages of my daughter. She is three and learned how to say “no”; late nurturing stage (Levinson, 1978). Late night feedings, heavy and awkward infant carriers, and stinky pureed baby foods are back, we now have a beautiful baby boy but as my daughter becomes increasingly independant and interactive, there are a new set of concerns and tasks I must focus on to ensure that she remains safe, healthy, happy, and developmentally on-track. My relationship with her is getting stronger. She has successfully passed the trust versus mistrust psychosocial stage (Erikson, 1959) and I believe I have met all her needs.

Erikson mentioned that when children are autonomous, they feel confident that they can make their own decisions. This is my goal. I want her to be able to feel positive and secure about herself and the choices she makes.

She is a pretty nice toddler going to preschooler. If someone ask me to identify her temperament patterns I will define her as a girl with high activity levels, easy going, easily diverted, highly sensitive to her and other’s emotions, high intensity, optimistic and high persistent. She is also an irregular eater with no sleeping or bowel movement schedules. Regarding her sensory awareness, she is very aware to pain, easily pleased, notices few variations in food, doesn’t notice odors too much, likes sounds; especially music and she is visually insensitive to light (Seattle, 1998)

Meta-parenting defined as a class of evaluative parental though concerning the childrearing domain that typically occurs before or after parent-child interaction (Golden & Hawk, 2003), has been always present in my learning experience as a mother. I used to anticipate my daughter. Although I always felt I was having a girl, we spent numerous hours discussing and shaping our dream baby. After her birth, I started to wonder about her development and I compared her with other children. I have been able to recognize problems like how to discipline her and discussed them with my husband. I am seeking vast knowledge in the parenting area so I can practice praxis; action and reflection (Freire, 1972) in my experience as an effective mother.

Erikson assumes people continue to grow and become healthier as they mature as parents and I agree. I also need to accept that being a student and a working mother can be stressful. Parenting is not a high-profile job. It doesn’t put you in the line for a promotion, the hours are exhausting and most of the time, the lunch hours and breaks are often nonexistent. Adding to this unpaid job, a full time career, is not always fun. Do I feel healthier? Well, besides the extra pounds I still carrying from my pregnancy and the stressful situations I have had with her, I feel renovated, stronger and full of energy every time I see my daughter and baby boy smiling faces.

just got you’ve got a friend in pennsylvania #1 in the mail from sari, who, despite being from

just got you’ve got a friend in pennsylvania #1 in the mail from sari, who, despite being from pennsylvania, is actually currently living in my hometown and we probably know a bunch of the same people which is hilarious, since i got this zine from a random ning trade. also this zine is bound with needle and thread which always impresses me. as a side note, i don’t usually bind my zines because i want people to make copies and give them to people, but if you think that’s annoying, please vote and tell me to get off my lazy ass and make my zines stick together somehow.

ANYWAY. the first part of you’ve got a friend in pennsylvania is sari’s travel diary from her study abroad in slovenija, which at first i was hesitant to read because i tend to get bored by people’s stories about how cool monuments are and shit like that. also this zine is totally text-heavy and therefore does not fulfill my usual desire for zines that i can read in the time span of a poop. but i persisted and it was worth it–not a monument to be found. when i finished that section of the zine i wanted to read more, which is sweet because sari will be printing more of her travel journal in issue #2. yo, sari, this trading relationship is not through. speaking of relationships, the rest of the zine mostly deals with those: old friends who have drifted apart, mothers, (ex)boyfriends. i wonder if sari has read culture slut or if amber has read you’ve got a friend in pennsylvania, because they both deal with issues of queer invisibility when badasss queer ladies are dating straight cis men. the last piece in the zine is from a paper sari wrote on menstruation, which was really interesting and actually i think might help with the seminar paper i’m writing on female facial hair. sari formatted the piece in two sections: theory and praxis (which i would like to do with my paper), and also writes about the desire to “separate ourselves from our ‘dirty’ bodily functions,” and the way that menstruation is delegated to a private space of shame or at best a hassle.

if you want a copy of you’ve got a friend in pennsylvania #1 email sari at youvegotafriendinpa@gmail.com.

also just got culture slut #19 and culture slut #20 from amber forrester in montreal, who is pretty much my zine hero. she makes me want to be a better zinester. one day…

Culture Slut #19 deals heavily with boys in all their shittiness–amber includes a trigger warning about the first part of the zine. besides the epic assholeness of dudes, #19 talks a lot about coming into a queer identity, and the struggles of doing that particularly while dating cis dudes. I can identify, lady. maybe i’ll make a zine about shitheads-i-have-dated and send it your way. other than being a damn good writer with things to say, amber is great at making zines really visually interesting with the incorporation of found images from old books and magazines, text from a label maker as well as a typewriter and so forth. also i was able to read this entire zine while pooping, which, for those of you who know, is something that always makes a zine a winner in my book.

In the words of culture slut #20’s epic author, “This zine is about getting settled in the city [Montreal], queerness, cats and periods.” It is also about love, living somewhere where you don’t speak the language, going back to school, city-biking, shitty gyno experiences, going to Pride for the first time, losing childhood pets, the word “cunt,” zine reviews…#20 also has a lovefest for the divacup, in common with you’ve got a friend which makes me kind of want to go buy one. i bought one a couple of years ago and found it didn’t fit comfortably but who knows…anyone want to lend me one to give it a shot?

In any case, Amber remains an inspiration and Culture Slut is a delight. One day I will go to Montreal and we will high five.

Okay, I have an epic amount of work to do and also need to go to Value Village today because my dress shoes fell apart at Homoween.

Hope you’re having a sunny Sunday,

Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks are today acknowledged as a classic of the human and social sciences in the twentieth century. The influence of his thought in numerous fields of scholarship is only exceeded by the diverse interpretations and readings to which it has been subjected, resulting in often contradictory ‘images of Gramsci’.

This book draws on the rich recent season of Gramscian philological studies in order to argue that the true significance of Gramsci’s thought consists in its distinctive position in the development of the Marxist tradition. Providing a detailed reconsideration of Gramsci’s theory of the state and concept of philosophy, The Gramscian Moment argues for the urgent necessity of taking up the challenge of developing a ‘philosophy of praxis’ as a vital element in the contemporary revitalisation of Marxism.

Peter D. Thomas (Ph.D, 2008) studied at the University of Queensland, Freie Universität Berlin, L’Università “Federico II”, Naples, and the Universiteit van Amsterdam. He has published widely on Marxist political theory and philosophy. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Historical Materialism: research in critical Marxist theory.

REVIEWS

Peter Thomas’ book should become the standard text in English on Gramsci’s thought. Acquainted as he is with the latest wrinkle in the Italian debate on Gramsci, Thomas combines an unmatched philological research into the sources and a mastery of the ongoing debates about the sense we should make of key ideas like hegemony. He deftly overturns the received orthodoxy and the various abuses of the ideas of the Marxist militant by theorists of cultural studies, both restoring Gramsci’s work to its true status and opening up fruitful possibilities for understanding his contribution to political theory more generally. The best book on Gramsci’s political theory for three decades — Alastair Davidson, Author of Antonio Gramsci: the Man, his Ideas, and Antonio Gramsci: Towards an Intellectual Biography

Peter Thomas’s Gramsci is the one we need in an era of economic and geopolitical crises that bears some resemblances to Gramsci’s own time. This Gramsci is no embarrassed culturalist, confused strategist, or incipient post-Marxist. Thomas’s Gramsci, developed from rigorous critical study of the Prison Notebooks and of the now extensive scholarly literature, is a deeply consequent thinker intent on reconstructing revolutionary Marxism in opposition to the most advanced bourgeois thought of his day. This is also a Gramsci for whom political economy is of central methodological and substantive significance. Not content with scholarly interpretation, Thomas draws his Gramsci into dialogue with contemporary radical thought, illuminating both sides of the conversation. This is a book that will recast the understanding of Gramsci, especially but not exclusively in the Anglophone world — Alex Callinicos, Professor of European Studies, Social Theory and International Political Economy, King’s College, London

What superlatives can I use to describe this book? Terms like ‘outstanding,’ ‘superb’ and ‘tour-de-force’ suggest themselves, but even these do not fully capture the extraordinary power of The Gramscian Moment. Peter Thomas’s erudite, wide-ranging, and staggeringly sophisticated reading of Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks completely overturns the dominant interpretations including those of Louis Althusser and Perry Anderson. Never again will we be able to read Gramsci solely through their lenses. Henceforth, Thomas’s magisterial exploration of Gramsci’s thought will become the critical point of reference for all serious work in the field. But Thomas does more than meticulous exegesis. He also insists on the actuality of Gramsci’s work, urging that we approach it in the spirit of “both continuation and transformation, fidelity and renewal.” He succeeds brilliantly on all counts — David McNally, Professor of Political Science, York University, Toronto

Peter Thomas’s The Gramscian Moment demonstrates the extent to which Gramsci’s thought represents a singular synthesis of virtually the entire tradition of Western political thought. The richness of his interpretative frameworks allows him both to integrate partial approaches and contributions and to throw new light on the central questions inherited by this tradition. This work succeeds in presenting Gramsci as a “living classic”, an author absolutely central to our understanding of modernity. Given its scope, richness and originality, I have no doubt that this work will represent a milestone in Gramscian scholarship and an important contribution to contemporary debates in political theory and philosophy — Stathis Kouvelakis, Author of Philosophy and Revolution and Co-editor of a Critical Companion to Contemporary Marxism

The Gramscian Moment is the most thorough and illuminating philosophical study of Gramsci yet to appear in English. It sets a new standard for work not only on Gramsci himself but on the whole complex of issues associated with his legacy – on the mechanics and dimensions of hegemony, on the role and nature of the subject of political action, on the relation between theory and practice, and between civil society and the state. Thomas does more than any previous reader of Gramsci to demonstrate how his philosophy can fairly claim to meet Marx’s famous prescription – not merely “to interpret the world but to change it” — Peter Hallward, Professor of Modern European Philosophy, Middlesex University, London
