Shiekh Mohammed al-Nujaimi makes me laugh. No, not because he is funny, but because many of his statements are simply laughable.

Few weeks ago, when Human Rights Watch criticized Saudi Arabia for detaining thousands of terror suspects without charge or trial, he came out saying he has strong evidence that HRW is a zionist organization, because according to him they overlook Israel’s crimes against the Palestinians. Well, Israelis think that HRW is “maniacally anti-Israel” because the organization have recently done some fund rising efforts in Saudi Arabia. Go figure.

Something else: while debate on stopping all commercial activity during prayer times continues, one local news website has decided to advocate for this pause by closing the site for 20 minutes, five times a day. If visitors to Aen Hail visit the site during prayers, they are met with a message “Closed for Prayer” in Arabic along with a countdown to the end of the prayer break at the bottom of the page.

What does al-Nujaimi has to say about this? “Closing a Saudi website for half-an-hour during obligatory prayers is a noble Islamic act,” he said. “It’s free from any search for fame or unacceptable rigidness. It contributes to reviving the habit of individuals praying on time.” Let’s think about it. Prayer times differ depending on where you are. What if I’m in a city where it is not prayer time yet? “What if the person wishing to surf the page is a non-Muslim?” as Amal Zahid asked in al-Watan daily.

The two examples mentioned above can be forgiven or ignored, but to go and label everyone who disagrees with him as traitors who serve a foreign agenda is just unacceptable. Al-Nujaimi probably suffers from logorrhea, but that does not mean he is excused from at least trying to think before he opens his big mouth.

The good old Australian Anglican Prayer Book (AAPB) has some great prayers written in it for various things on pages 91-97 (also p.120). Doing some of these every now and again is a good way to be trained in how to pray and different things to pray for. The leader of the prayer time can print some off (or photocopy) a few of the different prayers and choose some of the youth group to pray them out. Some of the language might need to be adjusted and updated so the youth group understand it.

To remind us of our sinfulness and the salvation we have through Christ Jesus. The first 2 orders of confession are taken from the AAPB.

#1: Take a moment for people to reflect on their lives and pray this confession silently using the singular personal pronouns “I” and “me” and “my”. Then after a few minutes pray this confession together as a group using the plural personal pronouns “we” and “our” and “us”.

“Most merciful God, we humbly admit that we have wandered from your way: we have done wrong, and we have failed to do what is right. You alone can save us.
Have mercy on us: wipe out our sins and teach us to forgive others. Bring forth in us the fruit of the Spirit that we may live as disciples of Christ. This we ask in the name of Jesus our Saviour. Amen.“

Have someone declare God’s forgiveness:

“God wills that all people be saved and in response to his call we acknowledge our sins. He pardons those who humbly repent and truly believe the gospel. Therefore we have peace with God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be all blessing and honour forever. Amen.“

#2: Read out Mark 12:28-33 (the greatest commandments) and give people time to reflect on how they have kept or rather, no kept these great commands. Then confess together:

“Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all people, we acknowledge with shame the sins we have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against your divine majesty, provoking most justly your wrath and indignation against us. We earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for all our misdoings. Have mercy on us, most merciful Father. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake forgive us all that is past, and grant that from this time forward we may serve and please you in newness of life, to the honour and glory of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.“

Have someone declare God’s forgiveness:

“Almighty God our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all who with hearty repentance and true faith turn to him: have mercy on you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.“

#3: Use the psalms of confession: Psalm 6, 32, 38, 51, 103, 130, 143. Perhaps read one and then have each person write a confession of their sins on paper and then burn them up in a fireplace as symbolic of how God has dealt with our sin, or even write them in the sand at a beach and let the ocean wash them away…

Give each group a massive round weather balloon (preferably filled with helium for some extra excitement!) and a couple of textas. In a time frame of about 5 minutes, each group needs to draw (and label) a world map on their balloon as accurately as possible. The group with the most accurate world map is the winner. Have information sheets (prepared before hand) to hand out that focus on a particular country and perhaps a missionary there. Good excuse to redo the widget and the link at the same time.

The widget is done from an Arabic design that says “salam” or “peace” in the form of a dove, which apparently has the same meaning in the Arab world as it does for us. I don’t remember where I got it, so if it’s yours, leave a comment and I will credit you.

The mosque I linked to for the prayer times isn’t just any mosque. It’s a progressive mosque in the DC area that reminds me of my own Christian traditions. They are governed by a council with representation that includes women, and they are one of the few mosques where men and women pray together in the same room, instead of relegating women to the basement. They do ecumenical outreach activities, and they are involved with the immigration and labor issues in their city. They deserve a link.

Well, in my first Ramadan as a Muslim, I done completely forgot to check my lunar calendar and missed the first day of the holy month (shukran jazillan and mad props to iMuslim—a very well-put-together blog right here at WordPress—for the reminder). But no worries—I got this, and plan on spending the next twenty eight days enjoying strengthening my relationship with Allah and learning more about my religion and myself! That is why, at the dawn of the second day of fasting, I thought I would share a little bit about Ramadan for those unfamiliar with it, and what it means to me for the Ummah all up in it as we speak. Insha’Allah, you will find this article entertaining and educational, and indeed, for those who need it, motivational as well.

Ramadan is the holy month of fasting for followers of the Muslim faith, marking the beginning of the first Quranic revelations. This month and the obligatory practices of self-discipline and piety required during it constitute the fourth of the five pillars of Islam. Among these practices are “the abstinence from evil deeds and talk, all food and drink, and all sexual relations”1 from sunrise to sunset, after which—as they say—all bets are off. But certainly those who dedicate their time to reading, reciting, and learning from the Qur’an and Hadith will reap the most benefit, and truly appreciate the spirit of the holy month.

Preparation for Eid-al Fitr, the celebration marking the end of Ramadan

Because Ramadan and other Islamic holidays are based on the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian (i.e., the one that says it’s September right now), it does not always fall on the same day or even the same Gregorian month every year. This means that Ramadan can and has fallen both in January, when the days are short, and in July, when the days are long. According to submission.org, though, no matter where in the world you live, the average day during Ramadan lasts approximately 13.5 hours. This period is bracketed by the meals of Sahur (mad early breakfast) and Iftar (dinner). But try to avoid the easy trap of overeating at Iftar—the day-long fast causes cravings for high quantities and low qualities of food, often later than intended, and every year millions of people put on weight during the holy month.

For my brethren in the West and the United States in particular, you may notice this isn’t the only instant ramification that fasting has on your daily activity. It’s very difficult to enjoy that third pick-up game at the rec center, for instance, when you know you won’t be drinking any water for another two hours. But the benefits of this abstention far outweigh the restrictions, and indeed are the very essence of Ramadan. Focus is turned from the external world to the self and Allah. The strength and commitment with which a Muslim fasts is a fundamental reflection of faith, and really, it feels good to do! You are giving, pledging yourself selflessly to Allah, and as the saying goes, Allah takes ten step towards you for every one you take towards Him. The USC Compendium of Muslim Texts describes it this way: “Fasting is an eloquent expression of Allah, leading this Ummah to the gates of His mercy, a key to unlocking the mysteries of His nearness.” For the forever-and-consistently-broke breakdown: you just don’t pass on food, water, sex, and breathmints for 14 hours without asking why. That “why” is Allah, and the recognition that He is worth it is what compels you to learn more, and to be in His good graces.

As this is my first Ramadan as a Muslim, I am still new to the experience and eagerly anticipating fortifying my faith and understanding. However, in the handful of times I have fasted before Jum’ah and the conversations I’ve had with lifelong followers of Islam, I can tell you that fasting elicits a sensation that I could only compare to praying Fajr—a feeling of instant accomplishment, and of momentum to do good. For me, fasting during Ramadan is the reminder of the God within us that is so central to my spirituality. To pratice and learn self-control not just in consumption and copulation, but in all things, for no one but yourself and Allah—that is what Ramadan is about. To deliberately put yourself through a trial of sorts, and to accept that so many people go without life’s luxuries every day; to know that not only has God blessed you with the opportunity to break fast and have all you have in this world, but that you are strong enough, and have that abstract deliciousness called wholelottasoul to get you through the day—that is what Ramadan is about, and I would like to again wish Ramdan Mubarak and Allah’s blessings to all those Muslims celebrating again or for the first time. I’ve included below some links with very helpful and reliable Ramdan information, as well as the times of sunrise and sunset in various locations until Eid on Spetember 30th. As-Salaam ‘Alaykum.

For many Muslims around the world who do not live near a mosque or masjid, they do not have access to athan, so here is a site which one can insert their location and the program can be downloaded to your computer and you can choose which type of athan you prefere. Please note that in some places such as Saudia Arabia, and Tucson, we do not use day light saving time so you need to put no in that block.

I hope that this will help those who dont know what time they need to start fasting at sunrise or what time they can break fast at maghrib. Please note that if you do not know what co ordinates you need it is so easy to google them, just google lattitude and longitude for …… San Francisco, or Montreal, or New Brunswick or which ever city you are near that may be a major city.

Once you have the longitude and latitude numbers, enter them into the IslamicFinder athan program and it will give you the Qibla direction comparable to north, and the timings for all prayers and they will update daily on its own. Also note that you may chose to have the athan on or off or to choose the style of athan that appeals to you.

I greatly hope that this is a help to many of you. Ramadan Kareem.
