X FACTOR hopeful Joe McElderry has made it through to the final 24, and his community is hoping he can go all the way.

In a lucky twist of fate, he will be mentored by fellow Geordie Cheryl Cole.

The Girls Aloud star and X Factor judge was delighted to find out she will be responsible for coaching the boys.

There are just six wannabes left in each category, and Tyneside teen Joe could not believe it when he made it to the shortlist.

The 18-year-old, from South Shields, will now have to beat off competition from the other five in his group to make it to the live final.

He will be battling it out against Duane Lamonte, Rikki Loney, Ethan Boroian, Lloyd Daniels and Daniel Fox, who will all be tutored by Cheryl at her home.

People living in the Coleridge Avenue area are rooting for him to win.

Barry Akins, owner of Akins Family Bakers, said: “I have been watching the show and I think he’s a great young lad.

“His mother sometimes comes in and so does he.

“There’s no doubt he’s got a fantastic voice and everyone here is hoping he will win.”

Michael Pittuck, manager of Westcott News, said: “Joe has tough competition this year but the whole community is behind him. He’s a really nice and pleasant lad.”

A neighbour, who doesn’t wish to be named, said: “I have been following the show right from the beginning and I think it’s getting more and more exciting now, especially since Joe has made it through to the next round and he will be mentored by Cheryl, another Geordie.

“I will be voting for him as will a lot of people around here.”

But while Joe was celebrating, the dream came to an end for Gateshead contestant Amie Buck.

The 22-year-old, who it was claimed worked as a lap dancer, was knocked out of the show on Saturday.

Last week, she faced controversy over claims in a national newspaper that she earned hundreds of pounds a week at Newcastle’s Blue Velvet club.

While she failed to make it to the final 24, Joe stormed his way through with his version of George Michael’s ballad Praying For Time.

Judge Simon Cowell described it as a “tough” choice, but the risk paid off – much to Joe’s delight.

He told the cameras: “I want this so, so much – singing is my life. I don’t want to go home today because my parents are so proud of me.”

The talented lad only discovered his singing voice four years ago while performing karaoke.

Two years ago, he made it to the bootcamp stage of the competition, but left because he felt he was too young.

Now, older and more confident, he caught Cheryl’s eye from the beginning of the reality TV show.

And even the notoriously fierce Simon admitted from the outset how impressed he was with Joe, telling him: “You’re potentially very good – we may have found a pop star.”

Joe says he dreams of the success of previous X Factor winners like Leona Lewis. In an earlier interview he said: “In the next two to three years I would like to have sold lots of albums, be touring sell-out arenas and performing to loads of audiences, which would be fantastic.”
