Rather early in my career as a programmer I learned a few rather important characteristics about software development requirements as well as how important delivering to an end user can be.

Way back, more than 10 years ago, when people still argued if Internet could be used to do other stuff than transferring JPGs, me and a colleague got involved in a small project. We where supposed to convert an MS Access application to a web ditto. The whole idea was basically that more users should be able to run the application and future upgrades would be a lot smoother. The current application had a few know bugs and those should be addressed as well.

Smooth sailing

In those days fancy web frameworks weren’t available, JavaScript implementations in browsers were rocky and their compliance to web standards was coincidental at best. Even so, a couple of weeks after we kicked development off we were well on our way and it looked like we could meet the expected delivery date. We worked at rather comfortable pace and finished the project one week late.

The late delivery wasn’t a big deal, no something else was.

A couple of months later we had developed a perfect replica according to our specification and the web app was installed and ready to be used. I later learned that the fact it was a perfect replica was the actual problem. Apart from the obvious bugs we removed we hadn’t realized that there were some more serious flaws in the current implementation.

First Demo

The implementation of the process flow didn’t fit reality which forced the users to go through unnecessary steps and procedure to work around a major design flaw. This became painfully obvious when I sat down with the customer during a demo. At first I felt rather proud of what we had achieved during the weeks of development but as the demo drew to and end the users that where present got more and more agitated. They where supposed to be impressed I thought to myself as I started to break some sweat.

10 minutes before the end I was trying to sum things up as a lady said: ‘What about the work flow …’. ‘Yes, how about the issues with the work flow …’ another one pitched in. I was baffled; ‘Yeah, what about it?’

‘You haven’t fixed the work flow?!’

I hadn’t … because I didn’t know I was supposed to.

In retrospect

Looking back I can see how easy it would’ve been to start pointing fingers and blaming each other or even blamed it on poor specifications. But the specs weren’t poor, were they?

As a developer I thought the specs were great and I had a really good grip on what to do. Just make a web application out of this, this really really precise specification. This legacy app. And we did!

We really managed to implement it. But did that cut the mustard? No it didn’t.

I think I was being misled and fooled by the very precise specification, in this case we had a running MS Access application. Which to me seems very precise. We could see the GUI, all the buttons, the drop-down menus and by golly we even had a reverse engineered schema for the database. Could it be more precise than that? I didn’t think so.

Today I still see lots and lots of people trying to work out very precise specifications. They really put their mind to it and often enough they produce really precise specs. This is what I think leads other people to think they are correct. This much detail … this high precision, no one could be this precise without being correct, right?

A piece of advice

- Precise isn’t the same as correct nor accurate
- Don’t substitute specifications for conversations

And last but not least; Software is of no use unless it’s in production and making peoples life easier.

Just quoting a recent Physics exercise:

Question: A man with a mass of 80 kg jumps horizontally from a wagon (on friction free horizontal rails) with a mass of 800 kg. At the liftoff, his speed relative to the wagon is 3 m/s. How much energy did the jump cost the man?
Answer: E = 327.3 J

The other day, I broke my window pane and had to purchase a new glass. Hence I had to know the dimensions of my window. Unfortunately, I didn’t have an appropriate measuring tape and one has to know it very exactly when ordering glass. No problem: I expected the window to be almost quadratic and I guessed that the area would be about one and a half square meter. Now I pulled out my good old pocket calculator, hit 1.5 + sqrt + enter and – surprise – got exactly 1.2247448713915890491 m as the side length. I think most scientific laboratories would – even using sophisticated equipment – have had serious troubles to meet that precision.

P.S. The inconvenient fact that the new pane did not fit, I can only explain by incredible malpractice of the manufacturer.

I was recently looking at some USHCN data and thought it was odd that the max/min temperatures were reported to the nearest degree (F). It reminded me of an off-topic discussion at Lucia’s about false precision. The criticism is that if temperature stations are reporting minimum and maximum temperatures to the nearest degree, then the mean can have no more precision than the two numbers that went into calculating it. Thus  the mean ought to be rounded to the nearest degree as well. How can we say the planet is a fraction of a degree warmer now relative to some climatological norm if the data going into that calculation isn’t even that precise? I used this question as an excuse to take a break from  two projects I’m working on. I downloaded 3-hourly 2-m surface temperature data for GISS EH (run 5) which covered 1991-2000. To calculate the daily min/max, I extracted eight time steps (one day’s worth) at a time and calculated the min/max values at each grid point. All the calculations from this point are done two ways: 1) using the raw min/max and 2) using the rounded min/max. From the calculated min/max, I found the daily average. After processing all the data, I then calculated monthly averages and anomalies relative to the entire period. First, let’s look at the daily and monthly average.

Now lets compare the mean daily temperature calculated from the raw and rounded values by taking their difference.

The error is fairly significant. It has a mean of zero and a standard deviation of 0.0038 °C so 99% of the errors have a magnitude of at most 0.0115 °C.  Now we can calculate anomalies and see how they compare in magnitude and trend. Here’s the monthly anomaly based on the unrounded data.

Now see the difference between the anomalies calculated with the rounded and unrounded data.

This trendless error also has a mean of zero and has a standard deviation of 0.0007 °C so 99% of the errors have a magnitude of 0.0022 °C. It appears then that using rounded values makes no real difference in the magnitude and trend in anomalies. Normally, anomalies are not calculated from spatial averages. Instead, they are calculated directly from the gridded data. So I re-did my calculations to follow this norm. Here’s the difference between the gridded monthly mean surface temperature calculated from the raw and rounded data.

Here’s the difference between the anomalies calculated from both data sets.

As you can see the differences in both surface temperature and anomaly calculations are virtually identical. This is probably because in the calculation of the monthly climatology, errors in the averaged monthly values almost entirely cancel. So by removing the climatology, essentially no additional error is removed. The rounding process should introduce grid scale errors of magnitude 0.5 °C. The temporal averaging from daily to monthly values reduces these relatively large errors to a magnitude of 0.13 °C. The month to month error range is unsymmetrical which is probably due to the fact that the temperature is changing significantly over the averaging period so there aren’t approximately as many round-ups as round-downs which makes the error bias on the lower or higher side. This error bias is on average zero and symmetric. When spatial averaging is introduced, the error is reduced even further, by about a factor of ten. The reason is probably because the combined spatial and temporal averaging combines errors that are of a relatively similar magnitude and oppositely signed.

Our industry works with some pretty amazing resolution and precision as our stock in trade. There are shops that look at tolerances in thousandths of an inch  (0.001″) . The thickness of a sheet of copy paper is around 0.003″,  and so a shop that can hold “half a thousandth,”  is saying essentially, that their total variation is on the order of one-sixth of the thickness of that sheet of copy paper. One-sixth of the thickness of a sheet of paper!

Some of our shops look at tolerances in terms of microns- that is millionths of a meter. A human hair can be anywhere within the range of 50- 120 microns, the average hair is probably  somewhere around 100 microns.

This means that the micron-calibrated  folks are measuring at precision levels that divide a human hair in about a hundred thicknesses, and a meter in millionths. That’s pretty impressive.

So I ran into this item  talking about about half a meter resolution, and I said, “Half meter resolution. Woo hoo- what’s the big deal? Thats no big deal.”

And then I saw what half a meter resolution looks like. From 684 kilometers (call it 425 miles ) up, taken while moving 7.5 km/second (thats 17,000 miles per hour, more or less.)

So while I continue to be impressed by the accomplishments of shops whose tolerances are anywhere from say a third of the thickness of a sheet of paper to one one-hundredth of the thickness of a human hair,  I have a new found respect for the resolution of, say, half a meter.  And I think we’ll all certainly be a bit more careful when we’re laying out by the pool…

Aristotle wasn’t a follower of Jesus.  He lived 300+ years before Jesus was born.  But he was a pretty smart guy.  Since the above quote is a mouthful and wasn’t written with Bible Study in mind, I would like to rephrase it and make a point that will help us in our daily Bible study.

How about:

“Speak where the Bible Speaks and Be Silent where the Bible is Silent.”

Or, “Don’t make the Bible say what it doesn’t say!”

Many of the teachings that have divided God’s church originate from someone’s interpretation or opinion of a Bible doctrine that they forced on others.  God has revealed a lot but only a certain amount.  When we go past that revelation and then tell others they are going to Hell for not arriving at our same conclusions, we are in trouble.

For the sake of having a consistent systematic theology, or sometimes to win arguments and debates, we arrive at dubious conclusions.  We often make the Bible be specific about something for our sake, when God has left it vague.

Whether it’s human nature or our western Greek heritage, we like everything neatly organized in lists, charts, and categories.  But sadly, we crave that so much, that we often abuse the Word of God to make things fit.

I am not totally against a systematic view of Scripture.  There is a great benefit in that.  But too often, it comes down to spending a lot of time and focusing on things that God either didn’t say explicity or didn’t say at all.

We need, like Aristotle, to be satisfied with the “degree of precision” of God’s revelation on any given subject, and not try to force some precision for precision’s sake.

I am not saying we should give up short of an exhaustive and comprehensive study to make sure we know what God has revealed, but I suggest caution in our conclusions.

The only reason it gets 4 not 5 stars is that it would really be nice if it came with a carry case of some kind, but that would probably add to the price.

The Lens Pens are great and having the 2 different shapes for the lenses and the screens helps out.

Malam yang dingin

Malam yang dingin, membuat seorang mahasiswa berjalan sendirian yang larut dengan kesendiriannya karena mengikuti kuliah di IT Telkom yang penuh dengan duka dan lara.

Mahasiswa keren itu sedang mencari-cari kuncinya yang hilang. Mahasiswa tersebut bernama G@#$fg(taulaaa). Karena habis kuliah information retrieval jadi harus pandai-pandai searching kunci yang hilang.

Beeeuhh ... datang preman

Tiba-tiba ada mahasiswa lain datang, dan meneriaki mahasiswa tersebut dengan teriakan,”Maling… Ayo Hajar!” Tiga mahasiswa tersebut mempunyai informasi yang sama tentang keberadaan maling yang selalu meresahkan mahasiswa.

Ketika berhasil menemukan kuncinya, dan berusaha menyalakan motornya, mahasiswa keren tersebut bingung dengan adanya teriakan maling tersebut. Mahasiswa keren hanya bisa bingung dan pasrah, karena tidak bisa melakukan information retrieval.

Gustaf langsung dengan sigap lompat dari motornya. Sedangkan yogi dan pongki sudah bersiaga juga akan menangkap gustaf dan akan memberi pukulan dengan pembobotan. Semua jurus-jurus pukulan ala google.

Dengan sigap, jimmy dan pongki segera menghadang gustaf yang mereka anggap pencuri dengan hadangan inverse document frequency dicampur indexing.

Akhirnya gustaf tertangkap, dan tanpa basa-basi langsung dihajar dengan pukulan yang bertubi-tubi. Pukulan crawler, tinju indexing, jotosan recall, semuanya pokonya dikeluarkan.

Karena merasa bersalah jimmy dan pongki meminta maaf kepada gustaf. Gustaf menasehati supaya jangan langsung menghakimi orang dengan seenaknya. Dan akhir kata dari jimmy dan pongki,” Ya maap lach”.

Hari ini kuliah tentang information retrieval. Tapi kok quiz ya. Asdos yang jengkelin, ech Soalnya gak mutu juga. Dasar kuliah information retrieval yang aneh.

Tiba-tiba datang mahasiswa yang ambil matkul information retrieval juga tapi terlambat. Mahasiswa tersebut bernama G*s**f. Puff.. Asdos yang belagu. Qta buat indexing baru tahu rasa tuch asdos.

Formasi tempat duduk yang aneh. Masak harus selang-selang. Ini asdos harus dilakukan pembototan dulu dech biar tahu rasa tuch asdos.

Di bali “>bade” merupakan wadah yang digunakan untuk meng-arak orang yang telah meninggal dunia(>layon) secara beramai-ramai oleh keturunannya dan masyarakat setempat menuju ke >kuburan/setra untuk> diaben. Hal ini sebagai bentuk penghormatan kepada orang yang telah meninggal dunia.

pemidahan ke wadag

setelah sampai dikuburan,> layon dipindahkan dari> bade ke wadag untuk dilakukan prosesi ngaben bersama wadag tersebut. Wadag merupakan sebagai simbol kendaraan sang roh menuju ke alam roh (swah loka).

pembakaran layon

setelah menjalani berbagai tahap upacara ngaben barulah dilakukan pembakaran layon. Hindu percaya manusia terdiri dari 5 unsur(api,tanah,air,udara,ether) dan jika manusia tersebut meninggal maka harus dikembalikan seperti semula. Pembakaran layon merupakan prosesi untuk mengembalikan layon menjadi unsur api,tanah, dan udara.

dalam ngaben setelah pembakaran layon maka layon yang telah dikembalikan menjadi tanah(abu), maka prosesi selanjutnya abu tersebut akan diarak menuju pantai untuk dilakukan pengembalian ke unsur air.

penghanyutan abu layon

sesampainya abu layon di pantai, maka selanjutnya abu layon tersebut akan dihanyutkan ke tengah pantai untuk mengembalikan layon ke unsur air

The Cadillac

I’ve personally always wonder how that particular name came to be for this piece of apparatus. As far as I’m concerned, this would be the piece of equipment that I would want in my living room. I’d take out all of the furniture but this wonderful piece of magic. I’d work out in the day and use it as a piece of furniture in the evening.

The overhead bars allow for many challenging exercises. The ankle cuffs allow for lots of advanced stretching for the legs and hips. The trapeze if perfect for a launching point for overhead scissors, upside down pull ups and an intense back bend. I find this piece of apparatus to be perfectly suited for my senior clients since it is well above the ground and easy to get on and off from. Stretching the legs is a cinch with bicycle stretch, the leg spring series in the air and tower and monkey. The push through bar and the pull down bar help add substance and balance for a great Pilates workout.
