Gerade lese ich mir das formidable “Don’t believe the Hype” von Sky Nonhoff über die am meisten überschätzten Alben der Rockgeschichte durch. In diesem kleinen Schatzkästlein kriegen sie alle ihr Fett weg: Bono (natürlich!), Madonna, die Beatles, die Allman Brothers und the Grateful Dead (hart aber nicht unberechtigt), Herbert Grönemeyer (natürlich, aber alleine ihn in diesen Band aufzunehmen ist eigentlich schon eine Frechheit), Neil Young, Van+Jim Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones und noch diverse andere.
Lassen Sie sich nicht durch die lausige Bewertung bei Amazon abschrecken. Auch mir hat es weh getan als die Grateful Dead und die Allman Brothers durch den Kakao gezogen wurden, aber es hat auch etwas Befreiendes. Sie werden Sie sich zukünftig nicht mehr die zwanzigminütigen Gitarrenfrickeleien von Jerry Garcia schönlügen, die tatsächlich nur eins sind: langweilig und nur im Drogenrausch zu ertragen.
Falls Sie Deutschlehrer sind, setzen dieses Buch im Unterricht ein. Die Glossen sind nämlich nicht nur inhaltlich sondern auch stilistisch brillant. Ersparen Sie Ihren Schülern Hermann Hesses “Steppenwolf”(don’t believe the Hype!, Sch..buch) und geben Sie Ihnen Nonhoff, denn das wird den Kiddies die dümmliche Heiligenverehrung -die in der Pop-Musik noch schlimmer wütet als in der Katholischen Kirche- austreiben. Überhaupt ist es hohe Kunst, wie Nonhoff und Co-Autoren die versteckten, dumpfen Aversionen, die man früher hatte, in glasklarer Sprache auf Papier bringen, zB Jim Morrison:

Der offenbar von schweren Impotenzängsten geplagte Profilneurotiker lieferte den Vers-Baukasten für mehrere Generationen von Teen-Lyrikern, die der Welt schon immer das eine oder andere dunkeldräuende Wörtchen ansagen wollten: Mit ein bisschen malerischen Nocturne, Tier- und Traumsymbolik, Kristallschiffen (auch bei Bernd Clüver gern genommen) Mahlströmen, Kreuzigung und Auferstehung lässt sich noch heute jederzeit ein faszinierend retardierter Seeleneinblick tischlern, und mit ein wenig Nudel-Poetry a la Morrison (“Ich opfere meinen Schwanz auf dem Altar des Schweigens”) verwandelt sich auch das von Möbel Brünninghaus eingerichtete Jugendzimmer in einen rauschtrunkenen Außenposten der Beat-Generation.

Seien wir mal ehrlich. Das hätte wir uns früher nie getraut. Etwas gegen Jim Morrson zu sagen war genauso gefährlich wie heutzutage öffentlich über den Propheten M. herzuziehen.
Wenn Freunde früher besoffen im Bordstein lagerten und ein paar Textzeilen von “The end” zum Besten gaben. Das hatte was: Tiefe , Weltschmerz und den ganzen Sch… . Das war eine ganz andere Liga als der besoffene Proll, der über Gastarbeiter herzog.
Wie auch immer!
Durch diese Lektüre ermutigt und gestählt, bin ich bereit, eine heilige Kuh zu schlachten, die bei mir schon seit einiger Zeit mental herumläuft: Prefab Sprout!

Kennen Sie nicht? Tja, damit stehen Sie jetzt als Ignorant da. Denn um in der Pop-Szene als Kenner dazustehen, müssen Sie auf jeder Party steif und fest behaupten, dass beste Album der Achtziger war “Steve McQueen” von Prefab Sprout. Diesen Quatsch hatte ich so oft gehört, dass ich vor zwei Jahren die Nerven verloren habe und mir die Scheibe für billig Geld holte. Und ab damit in den CD-Player. Es ging ganz ordentlich los mit “Faron Young”. Auch “Bonny” im Anschluss war ein nettes Liebeslied. An die restliche Songs kann ich mich nicht erinnern, aber sie schrammten allesamt haarscharf am Kitsch vorbei. Das alles hörte sich nett an, mehr aber auch nicht.
Das sollte die beste Scheibe der Achtziger gewesen sein? Ich wollte es nicht glauben, aber immerhin wäre es möglich. Denn die Achtziger hatten fast nur grauenvolle Musik zu bieten und es könnte natürlich sein, dass diese Seicht-Pop-Scheibe der musikalische Höhepunkt war, quasi die Einäugige unter den Blinden. Aber nein! Beim genaueren Überlegen fiel mir dann doch die eine oder andere Scheibe ein, die “Steve McQueen” locker in der Schatten stellte, zB “Infidels” von Dylan oder “No method, no guru, no teacher” von Van the Man. Völlig unmöglich, dass es sich bei diesem Werk um den musikalischen Orgasmus der Achtziger handelt!
Jetzt bin ich am Rätseln, wer diesen hanebüchenen Unsinn in die Welt gesetzt hat. Meine Theorie ist folgende:
irgendwo in den Redaktionsräumen der Musik-Illustrierten sitzt der Papst unter den Musikkritikern. Sein Wort ist Gesetz. Der Reich-Ranicki des Pop-Journalismus. Der Mann kann Karrieren starten und wieder zerstören. Keiner unter den Musikkritikern widersetzt sich seinem Verdikt. Was er schreibt, schreiben andere Musikkritiker in abgewandelter Form ab. Irgendwann aus einer Bierlaune heraus, kam dieser Mann auf die Idee, eine völlig unbedeutende, mittelmäßige Pop-Combo in den Rang von musikalischen Genies zu erheben, um zu sehen wie weit sein Einfluss reicht. (Jimi Hendrix hat ja auch oft absichtlich Sch.. gespielt. Den Leuten wars egal, sie haben ihn trotzdem angehimmelt. Hurz!)
Als er sich am nächsten Tag die Rezensions-CDs anschaute fiel die Wahl für sein Projekt zufällig auf besagte Prefab Sprout. Also schrieb jener Kritiker eine hymnische Eloge auf diese Band. Die anderen Kritiker dachten wahrscheinlich erst, dass ihr Kollege wahnsinnig geworden sei. Aber man steht dann doch nur ungern als Ignorant da.
Also ging man auf Nummer sicher und verfasste ebenfalls brav die anstehenden Lobeshymnen auf “Steve McQueen”. Und zack war eine Legende geboren. Und Prefab-Sprout Sänger Paddy Mac Aloon steht in einer Reihe mit den letzten musikalischen Wahnsinnsgenies vom Range eines Scott Walker oder Brian Wilson wie letztens in der “Konkret” keck behauptet wurde. (Andererseits stimmt es natürlich, denn keine Sau hört Walker und Wilson heutzutage noch). Jetzt hat eben jener Paddy MacAloon sein Song-Archiv durchforstet und aus alten Songs eine neue Scheibe zusammengestellt: “Let’s change the world with music”. Hören Sie selbst! Wenn das ein Meisterwerk ist, dann bin ich Ludwig van Beethoven. Nee, das ist Pop-Gedudel.

Desde hace ya un tiempo, nos vienen a recordar via tv, que cualquier tiempo pasado fue mejor. Al menos, pasado.
El corte inglés, Coca-cola, Pastillas juanolas y jabones no-se-qué, son ejemplos claros del revival ochentero-noventero que surge como hematoma sintomático de una crisis que continúa.

Via red, se demuestra que; cada tiempo es diferente, y que el talento alineado a nuevas tecnologías y las ganas de generar nuevos discursos brotan a tutiplén.

Mi opinión; seguiremos en las mismas.
- Cliente:- No hay dinero, no me arriesgo.
- Profesional:- No hay dinero, pues proyecto ilusión como recurso autoafirmativo de la penita desta situación.

Hoewel een banjo er op het eerste gezicht een beetje uitziet als een ietwat rare gitaar is het eigenlijk een heel ander soort instrument. In essentie is een banjo een drum: een drum met snaren. Daarom is de wijze van bespelen ook helemaal anders. Een gitarist tokkelt: hij plukt aan de snaren van beneden naar boven, terwijl een banjospeler “slaat” met de achterkant van de nagels, met een beweging richting de vloer.

Er zijn zelfs twee geheel verschillende speelwijzen voor de banjo.

Ofwel worden er plastic of metalen fingerpicks op de vingertoppen geplaatst. Bij deze techniek gebruikt de speler, behalve de duim, drie vingers. Dit levert een veel drukker geluid op, dat vooral bij bluegrass erg populair is.

Herkomst

Midden 18^de eeuw was de banjo het instrument van de zwarte slaven. Het was terug te vinden op elke plantage in Maryland en Virginia. “Een uniek instrument is de banjar,” getuigt ene Thomas Jefferston, wanneer hij in 1781 het leven van de slaven op een plantage in Virginia beschrijft. “Die hebben ze mee overgebracht uit Afrika,” concludeert hij.

Verdere studie leert echter dat de eerste beschrijving van een banjo-achtig instrument helemaal niet uit het Appalachengebregte stamt, maar uit Martinique. Daar dook de banjo ruim een eeuw eerder op: in 1678. Later volgen nog getuigenissen uit Jamaica (1869) en Barbados (1708).

Vanaf het begin van de 17^de eeuw werden massaal mensen uit West-Afrika naar de Nieuwe Wereld  getransporteerd om er te werken als slaven op de plantages. Onder de harde omstandigheden was muziek een van de weinige dingen die hun troost kon bieden. In eerste instantie was dat zang, met begeleiding van percussie. De blanken ervoeren dat tromgeroffel achter als een bedreiging, omdat ze vreesden dat hiermee boodschappen werden doorgegeven. Mogelijk kon zo een opstand worden georganiseerd. Al snel volgde er een algemeen verbod op het gebruik van trommels. 

Daarom zochten de slaven naar andere instrumenten. Voor het bouwen daarvan baseerden ze zich op het voorbeeld van de vertrouwde instrumenten uit het thuisland. Ze maakten gebruik van goedkope materialen die in de nieuwe leefomgeving te vinden waren: kalebassen bijvoorbeeld. Dat zijn niet-eetbare pompoenen (in het Engels: gourd) met een harde schil. De vrucht werd uitgehold en met een dierenvel bespannen. Daarop werd dan een lange hals gemonteerd, waarop drie tot vier snaren werden aangebracht.

In verschillende studies wordt gewezen op de overeenkomsten tussen de banjo en de luitachtige instrumenten die door de griots werden bespeeld. De ngoni uit Mali wordt genoemd, de akonting uit Senegal en nog meer exotische namen als de busunde, de kasinta en de ngopata.

Omwille van de bamboestok die dikwijls oorspronkelijk als hals werd gebruikt, kreeg het nieuwe instrument namen als banjar, bangie, banjer, banza of banjo. Of naar de pompoen-klankkast: gourd-banjo.

Echter, naar het voorbeeld van de Spaanse en Portugese snaarinstrumenten, verschenen in de loop van de jaren Westerse vernieuwingen aan de hals: houten pinnen om de snaren aan te spannen en een kam.

Na verloop van tijd werd ook de pompoen vervangen. In de plaats kwam een tamboerijn-achtige romp: een ronde klankkast, met aan de voorzijde een strak gespannen vel. Doordat de kam rust op het gespannen vel kan de energie die bij het bespelen van de snaren wordt toegevoerd zeer snel weg. Dit levert een kort maar hard geluid op. Het beklemtoont het percussiekarakter waarnaar de muzikanten op zoek waren ter vervanging van de drums. Het beklemtonen van het ritme is immers essentieel als begeleiding van worksongs. 

Honderd jaar lang was de banjo het uitverkoren instrument van de zwarten. Niet alleen tijdens het werk maar ook ter begeleiding van zang en dans ter vermaak. Het cliché van een zwarte jongen of man met strohoedje en een banjo in de hand is in zowat elke Lucky Luke strip terug te vinden.

In de vroege jaren dertig van de negentiende eeuw ontstond de minstrel show of minstrelsy. Een troep rondtrekkende acteurs en muzikanten brachten vermaak met sketches, parodieën, slapstick, dans en muziek. Een onderdeel van hun show was de blackface act. Blanke mannen kleedden zich in lompen, maakten hun gezicht zwart en imiteerden zo de zwarten. De typische manier van spreken en bewegen, de muziek en de dans van de zwarten werden er uitvergroot tot vermaak van de blanken. Een van de veel voorkomende typetjes was de ex-slaaf die terug verlangde naar de plantage waarin hij was opgegroeid. De boodschap die de minstrels brachten was: ‘je hoeft je geen zorgen te maken om de slaven, die zijn best tevreden met hun lot’. En ook ‘Zwarten horen niet thuis in de noordelijke staten’.

Om de “negermuziek” authentiek te laten klinken begonnen ze typische “zwarte instrumenten” als de banjo en de tamboerijn te bespelen.

Een van die allereerste blanke banjospelers was Joel Walker Sweeney (1810 – 1860). Hij was, in zijn eentje, misschien wel verantwoordelijk voor de doorbraak van het instrument bij het blanke publiek. Daarvoor had hij wel een paar aanpassingen nodig, zoals een vijfde snaar!

Niet dat die extra snaar een uitvinding van hemzelf was. Er zijn oudere afbeeldingen bekend van vijfsnarige banjo’s. Maar tot dan toe werd die vijfde, veel kortere snaar tot klinken gebracht door de resonantie van het instrument zelf. De bespeler raakte de snaar zelf niet aan.

Sweeney ging de snaar bespelen met zijn duim. Sterker nog: hij ging precies die duimsnaar gebruiken om de melodie te spelen, terwijl hij op de andere vier snaren een begeleiding tokkelde met de vingers. Dit opende geheel nieuwe perspectieven.

Een niet onbelangrijk element in de groeiende populariteit van de banjo was het werk van Amerika’s eerste professionele songwriter: Stephen C. Foster (1826 -1864). Vele van de songs die hij schreef voor de minstrels groeiden uit tot klassiekers zoals ‘Oh Susanna’, ‘Swanee River’, ‘Hard Times’, ‘Beautiful Dreamer’ en ‘Camptown Races’.

Een andere songwriter was Daniel D. Emmett (1815-1904). Hij begon als blackface fiddlespeler bij de Virginia Minstrels maar schakelde later over op de banjo. Voor dat instrument schreef hij tientallen songs waaronder ‘Dixie’s Land’. Als ‘Dixie’ groeide het tijdens de Burgeroorlog  (1861 – 1864) uit tot het lijflied van de Confederatie en later van de gehele South.

Na die Burgeroorlog bloeide de nieuwe five-string banjo op als het populairste instrument, zowel in de huiskamers van de hogere en middelklasse als op de concertpodia en de schamele huisjes in het Appalachengebergte.

Evolutie

Tot het einde van de 19de eeuw bleef de banjo een heel eenvoudig instrument, enkel geschikt om er een zeer eenvoudige melodie mee aan te geven. Het ontbreken van frets op de minstrelbanjo maakte het erg moeilijk om de juiste toon aan te houden. Hoewel Henry Dobson al in 1878 patent aanvroeg voor een commerciële banjo met frets, duurde het bijna drie decennia eer het concept aansloeg.

Dat gebeurde pas toen de stalen snaren hun intrede deden. Naar analogie van de mandolines waarbij een plectrum werd gebruikt, begonnen banjospeler toen ook te experimenteren. De plectrumbanjo was geboren en de vijfde snaar werd meteen weer overbodig.

In de eerste decennia van de twintigste eeuw leidden Europese elementen, onder meer de invloed van de gitaar, tot een meer klassieke speelstijl. Tegelijk ontstonden er allerlei hybride instrumenten waarbij de banjo werd  ‘gekruist’ met een ander snaarinstrument. Op de klankkast van een banjo (vaak met resonator) werd dan de hals van een ander instrument geplaatst. Bedoeling was om het bespelers van andere instrumenten mogelijk te maken gebruik te maken van het penetrante banjogeluid. Dat was vooral zeer gegeerd zolang er nog geen elektrische versterking beschikbaar was.

Nergens was zo belangrijk om luid te kunnen spelen als in het drukke nachtleven van New Orleans. De banjo was dan ook perfect om het ritme in de blaasbands te accentueren. Omstreeks 1920 ontstond zo een nieuw genre: Dixieland (ook gekend als New Orleans jazz of traditional jazz).

Maar dat was een laatste opflakkering, want eens de elektrische versterkers hun intrede deden waren de gouden jaren van de banjo voorbij. Enkel in het Appalachengebergte bleven five-string banjospelers populair bij de southern dance bands en andere hillbillymuziek. Het publiek genoot er van instrumentalisten als Uncle Dave Macon, Stringbean, Clarence Ashley en The Carter Family met June Carter.

Een van de grootste namen was Charlie Poole (1892-1931).

Als jongen had Charlie twee passies: spelen op zijn zelfgemaakte gourdbanjo en baseball. Bijna kwam aan allebei een eind toen hij eens een bal met de blote hand wou pakken, omwille van een weddenschap. Hij hield er een paar gebroken botten in zijn  rechterhand aan over met een permanente vervorming van enkele vingers als gevolg. Poole was echter een doorzetter. Hij bedacht een geheel nieuwe techniek om de banjo te bespelen: de “threefinger picking style”, waarbij hij melodie, arpeggio en ritme wist te combineren

Zijn eerste echte banjo kon hij pas kopen toen hij ging werken in een textielfabriek.

Poole zag in de banjo een uitweg om niet, net als zijn ouders, zijn hele leven te moeten zwoegen in die fabriek. Hij vulde het weinige geld dat hij kon sparen aan met de opbrengst van illegale alcoholstokerij, om zich zo een eersteklas banjo te kunnen veroorloven. Met die Gibson van $200 kon hij professioneel gaan spelen. In 1917 richtte hij, samen met zijn schoonbroer, de fiddelspeler Posey Rorrer, een eigen stringband op: de North Carolina Ramblers. Drie jaar later waren ze een veelgevraagde band op dansfeesten en partijen door het gehele zuidoosten.

Op 27 juli 1925 mochten ze in New York hun eerste plaatje gaan opnemen. Het was meteen raak. Meer dan honderdduizend exemplaren van ‘Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down Blues’ vlogen de deur uit. En dat in een tijd waarin slechts zeshonderdduizend mensen een grammofoon hadden. Charlie Poole werd de eerste countryster.

Hoewel hij zelf nauwelijks songs schreef groeiden vele van de zeventig nummers die hij in de volgende jaren opnam uit tot klassiekers in bluegrass en country: ‘Can I Sleep In Your Barn Tonight, Mister?’, ‘Old and Only In the Way’, ‘White House Blues’…

Toen de depressie de verkoop in elkaar deed stuiken, ging hij graag in op een aanbod van Hollywood om te gaan werken voor de filmindustrie. Hij zou echter nooit in Californië raken. Na dertien weken (!) van fuiven en drinken begaf zijn hart het. Poole werd slechts 39 jaar oud.

Revival

Pas in de tweede helft van de jaren veertig, werd de banjo, net als de mandoline, terug opgepikt door bluegrassspelers. Hoewel Bill Monroe zijn eerste Blue Grass Boys band oprichtte in 1939, was het pas zes jaar later dat het genre echt van de grond kwam. Dat was te danken aan de komst van een banjospeler uit North Carolina: Earl Scruggs. De jongeman liet het publiek helemaal uit de bol gaan door zijn razendsnelle solo’s, gespeeld met een geheel eigen drie-vingertechniek. Hiervoor maakte hij gebruik van fingerpicks: een soort plastic of stalen kunstnagels die op de duim en vingers worden geklemd.

Zijn vernieuwende “Scruggs style” banjospel sloeg zo aan dat hij wel gek zou zijn om niet voor zichzelf te beginnen. Samen met Lester Flatt richtte hij The Foggy Mountain Boys op. Hun grootste succesnummer was ongetwijfeld ‘Foggy Mountain Breakdown’, uit 1949. Twintig jaar later werd het instrumentale nummer wereldwijd populair door het gebruik in de film Bonnie & Clyde – over een gansterkoppel in de jaren twintig!

Drie jaar later schoot, opnieuw dankzij een film, een ander instrumentaal banjonummer naar de top van de hitlijsten: ‘Duelling Banjos’. De oorspronkelijke versie heet ‘Feudin’ Banjos’ en werd in 1955 geschreven door Arthur Smith. Hij nam het zelf op, op een vier snarige plectrum banjo, met Don Reno op een vijfsnarige instrument.

In de thriller Deliverance zien we de acteurs Billy Redden (de hillbilly dorpsidioot op banjo) en Ronny Cox (de Yankee op gitaar). Maar we horen respectievelijk Eric Weissberg en Steve Mandell, in een productie van Joe Boyd.

Maar ook buiten de countrywereld maakte de banjo een comeback vanaf de jaren veertig. Dat was voornamelijk te danken aan Pete Seeger. Hij keerde terug naar de traditionele muziek die nu folk werd genoemd. In 1948 publiceerde hij de eerste versie van zijn boekje, How To Play The 5-String Banjo,  dat groeide uit tot het handboek voor vele generaties banjospelers.

Dankzij de folkrevival kwamen de oorspronkelijke uitvoerders terug in de belangstelling. Velen van hen kregen de kans om hun oude opnamen nog eens over te doen, met veertig jaar ervaring en veel beter geluidskwaliteit als bonus.

Een van hen was Clarence ‘Tom’ Ashley. Op 23 oktober 1929 zette hij, in Johnson City, Tennessee, de oorspronkelijke versie neer van het aloude ‘The Coo Coo Bird’. Harry Smith had het plaatje in 1952 terug onder de aandacht gebracht op zijn Anthology of American Folk Music.

Maar in 1961 zette hij de definitieve versie neer, met de hulp van een blinde gitarist uit Deep Gab, North Carolina: Doc Watson.

Tegen het einde van de jaren zestig ontstonden de eerste, voorzichtige toenaderingspogingen tussen twee geheel verschillende werelden: country en rock. Het waren de rockmuzikanten die, onder invloed van de muziek die ze in hun jeugd op de radio hadden gehoord, het initiatief namen: Gene Clark, Bob Dylan, Gene Parsons, Michael Nesmith, …. Voor het bespelen van specifieke instrumenten als steelgitaar, mandoline en banjo keken de rockers naar de beste bluegrassartiesten. Earl Scruggs beroerde de vijfsnarige banjo op Dylans ‘Nashville Skyline Rag’ en The Byrds vroegen Doug Dillard van The Dillards mee op tournee. Zijn banjospel moest hun geluid wat authentieker maken.

Na afloop van de Europese tour vroeg ex-Byrd Gene Clark hem om samen Dillard & Clark op te zetten. Zij omringden zich met fantastische countrymuzikanten waaronder Bernie Leadon, die later The Eagles zou helpen oprichten.

De banjo in de Britse rock

De Britten beschouwden de banjo als een zeer primitief instrument. Volgens de overlevering zou de Britse muziekhistoricus Cecil Sharp, toen hij tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog door het Appalachengebergte trok op zoek naar songs, uitdrukkelijk hebben laten weten dat hij geen banjo’s of gitaren wou zien. Die interesseerden hem niet. Wat hij zocht waren oude Ierse en Schotse balladen of dansmuziek. Niet van die niewerwetse dingen.  

Vanaf het midden van de negentiende eeuw zochten banjobouwers naar manieren om meer mensen aan te spreken door de mogelijkheden uit te breiden.

De tenorbanjo had een kortere nek met 19 frets en wordt bespeeld met een plectrum. Het was een uitstekend begeleidingsinstrument voor de jazz- en dancebands in de jaren twintig en dertig van de vorige eeuw. Vooral omdat het te horen was boven de blazers en saxofoon uit. De komst van de elektrisch versterkte gitaar verdrong de tenorbanjo van het podium. Enkel in de meer traditionele Dixieland jazz bleef er een plaatsje voor over.

Een andere, voor de hand liggende oplossing om de mogelijkheden te verruimen, is het toevoegen van een zesde snaar. Vooral jazzmuzikanten, zoals Johnny St. Cyr en Django Reinhardt, experimenteerden met de guitanjo, zoals het instrument werd gedoopt. Maar ook een bluesman als Reverend Gary Davis had er een.

Helemaal er over is de zither-banjo: met zeven snaren is er wel erg ver afgeweken van het oorspronkelijke concept.

De stiefmoederlijke behandeling van het instrument in de Britse muziek is merkbaar in het feit dat de banjo slechts zelden wordt gebruikt in de pop- of rockmuziek. Enkele uitzonderingen zijn: ‘Stop Stop Stop’ van The Hollies, ‘Squeeze Box’ van The Who, ‘Gallows Pole’ van Led Zeppelin, Bright Side of the Road van Van Morrison, ‘Cowboy Dreams’ van Prefab Sprout of ‘Sing’ van Travis.

Veel meer kan ik er eigenlijk niet bedenken.

En om af te sluiten nog eentje die helemaal buiten alle categoriën valt: de slaggitarist van de Amerikaanse garageband The Monks. Dave Day bespeelde een zessnarige banjo alsof het een elektrische gitaar was. Met behulp van een kleine ingebouwde microfoon verkreeg hij zo een speciale metaalachtige klank.

Nova semana, novo barulho. Encontrei um álbum que andava à procura faz anos, Weren’t Born A Man, de Dana Gillespie, e faço questão de partilhar. Novos petiscos dos Air, de Sufjan Stevens e Thom Yorke, e uma viagem pelos anos 80, guiada por três bandas, apenas uma activa nessa década. Entretanto, volta o Dubstep nas suas múltiplas formas, e acaba-se o programa a dançar.

Particularmente satisfeito com este programa, o tom geral dos quase 80 minutos deixou-me muito bem disposto, e o som parece continuar a melhorar. Mas estes ouvidos estão destruídos, digam vocês de vossa justiça.

On this day five years ago, John Peel was getting ready to present another episode of his radio show. Unfortunately, it would be his last as a heart attack would take his life a few weeks later while on a working holiday in Peru. He had been best known as a disc jockey and champion of the musical underdog on BBC radio. His Peel Sessions gave many bands their first chance of airplay and a load of them went on to have successful careers in the music business. Sadly, I never got to hear his shows as it was not possible for me to listen to BBC radio when he was around. Nevertheless, I’m grateful to him for giving a first chance to many bands that I count among my favourites. For example, he once announced on air that he was feeling a little peckish. A cheeky chappy from Essex heard this and he delivered a Biryani to the studio along with a copy of his demo! He was offered a session straight away and Billy Bragg has become a very respected songwriter with loads of albums under his belt

He gave The Undertones’ Teenage Kicks its first airing and then returned the needle to the start of the groove and played it a second time! The song became his favourite and would be played at his funeral. He was also a big football fan and had been present at Heysel Stadium in 1985 when dozens of football fans lost their lives. He stopped attending matches for a few years after that and was also upset by the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989. In 1991, he appeared as himself on the long-running BBC radio soap The Archers and was awarded the OBE in 1998. To tie in with Football & Music’s tribute to the great man, I’ve put together a mix of some of my favourite Peel sessions and songs by bands that Peelie championed

La banda sonora de esta película de Kenneth Branagh es un compendio de rock y pop de los ochenta que incluye nombres como The Pretenders, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Young, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Queen, Terence Trent D’Arby, Prefab Sprout, Tina Turner, Deacon Blue o The Pasadenas, con la incursión añadida de una clásica del jazz como Nina Simone.

Sin duda, rescataremos más temas esta banda sonora. En esta ocasión nos quedamos con la canción que abre la película, Everybody wants to rule the world, de los británicos Tears for fears, que actúa como hilo narrativo entre el prólogo de la película, situado en 1982, y el reencuentro de los protagonistas diez años después que constituye el motivo de la trama, mientras por la pantalla van desfilando acontecimientos de la vida pública británica acaecidos durante ese tiempo: la elección de Margaret Thatcher como primera ministro, la guerra de las Malvinas, las huelgas mineras, la boda de Carlos y Diana, las tragedias mortales en distintos campos de fútbol, la elección de John Major…

Y además, otro clásico, Hungry heart, de Bruce Springsteen, que engrosa la parte americana de la banda sonora.

Os Prefab Sprout vão regressar aos discos em 2009. Paddy McAloon está a trabalhar num álbum que deverá ser editado nos primeiros meses do ano novo. O disco deverá ter por título Let’s Change The World With Music – The Blueprint.

Não é um disco novo. Na verdade está pronto há 17 anos, mas só agora viu a luz do dia. O novo álbum dos Prefab Sprout pode mostrar marcas de linguagens datadas. Mas é um (mais um) monumento de grande composição pop assinado por Paddy McAloon.

More from the new Prefab Sprout album Let’s Change the World With Music. This is one of my favourite tracks on the album at the moment – a classic Paddy McAloon song, complete with wonderful, heartfelt lyrics.

Music is a Princess……

Paddy McAloon is, well, was one of my favourite song writers. His work for Prefab Sprout has rarely been bettered, and albums like Andromeda Heights and From Langley Park to Memphis are on my list of most played vinyl ever.

So it was rather unsurprising that I was rather excited by the announcement of the release of a new album with new material by Prefab Sprout called ” Let’s Change the World With Music“. Instantly downloaded (remember going to the record shop around the corner every day until the album you were waiting for finally arrived?) from Itunes, I gave it an instant spin (well, I gave the hard disk a spin) and was initially delighted by the usual McAloonesque harmonic joys, but soon was beginning to worry that I might have downloaded something resembling ‘Christian Pop’.  References to God, Jesus and Angels are flying around liberally, and I wonder whether this is a concept album to drum up support for the Church of England.

The sound is a bit weird as well: while the songs themselves reflect McAloon’s musical genius, the production sounds like somebody threw together some ideas on an eighties drum computer and a kid’s synthesizer, often detracting from the beauty of the compositions.

I wonder whether Paddy’s beard length correlates with the religiosity of his lyrics. On the other hand, I can’t really be mad at a guy who made some of the most beautiful music in the universe. A bit like Bach, if you think of it.

Let’s hope it’s just a phase.

Det fanns en tid i mitt liv då allt var upp och ner. Då allt var nattliga promenader med eller mot kärleken, då det grälades i gathörnen, då allt var uppbrott, utbrott och sammanbrott, mer tårar än jag visste fanns och en massa förrädisk eskapism i kärlek som aldrig höll vad den lovade.

Med andra ord fanns det stoff för poplåtar så gott som varje dag. Hjärta, smärta och ramlande gator.

Idag ter sig livet helt annorlunda. Det är måhända upp och ner emellanåt nu också – men nattvak, kolik och välling är inte stoff man skriver popsånger av. I alla fall har jag inte hittat hem i någon slags form.

Det är ju romantiskt att tänka sig att texter skrivs av en nödvändighet, att enda sättet att få ut och uttrycka de där sakerna var att skriva sången just så där. Jag känner fortfarande att jag gör musik av någon slags inre nödvändighet, men det är melodierna som är huvudsaken – det är de som bär själva den där känslan – den där jakten efter skönhet.

Och kanske behöver en konstnärlig strävan inte heller vara något annat än just detta att försöka förmedla skönhet, även om det må vara skönheten av något som går sönder eller tja…

Vad jag försöker säga är nog att jag inte har något att säga. Jag har skrivkramp helt enkelt. Mina melodier kräver texter för att fungera som de popsånger de är, men jag hittar inte berättelser i mig som är tillräckligt känslosamma för att bära upp de stora melodierna.

Ord kan man ju alltid skriva. Men i en sång så är det ju inte sällan så att vissa rader och strofer (där musiken plötsligt blir ganska dramatisk) kräver att man sjunger vissa saker som om det gällde livet, eller som att allt är en kamp för att hålla samman något som faller sönder – och nej, det är inte då man försöker drämma till med småbarnsföräldraskapets vardagsbilder och låta dem eka ut över en tänkt grand canyon.

Alltså har jag börjat fundera på möjligheten och rättigheten att få skriva saker i tredje person. Jag har nog gjort det några gånger tidigare. Men kanske att jag borde dra mig mot  något mer konceptuellt skrivande.

Paddy McAloon och hans Prefab Sprout har släppt en ny skiva. Jag tror att jag har önskat mig den i födelsedagspresent, eller så har jag glömt det och får köpa den till mig själv. Hur som helst, just Paddy McAloon är kanske den stora förebilden för ett konceptuellt skrivande i tredje person. Det är smart, välarbetat på gränsen, inte sällan i det närmaste ornamenterat vad gäller detaljrikedom – just fram till den gräns där löjets skimmer är farligt nära – om det inte vore för att allt är så charmigt välgjort som hemgjord vaniljglass att det ändå ramlar ner perfekt hos mig.

Jag menar, naturligtvis är det förbannat fånigt alltihop. Men jag älskar verkligen att gå och nynna på den där låten. Och den bär på en slags fyndighetens förtjusning som jag just finner ganska förtjusande. Fast om jag ska göra något liknande – nja, tror inte det. Heller. Vi får se…

Last time on our musical road trip through the USA we visited Philadelphia. It’s time now to hitch a helicopter ride to Gotham City. I am among the many who are profoundly fascinated by New York. Without ever having been there, or to America at all, I feel an affinity with the place (at this point I might invite the multi-millionaires among my loyal readers to come forward with offers for an all-expenses trip to NYC for me and my family). Obviously I’m not alone.

Before turning on our notional journey towards NYC, I thought that this leg of the trip ought to be marked with a mix of songs about the city. In fact, I thought I’d even make it two mixes. Then I began shortlisting. The list grew longer and longer. Then I culled, ruthlessly. Sorry, Lou, just two songs for you. Ditto Paul Simon (though his songs have been widely covered, thereby qualifying for inclusion in the interpretation of others). Upshot: I have about a hundred songs about New York which I want to share. I promise you two mixes; if you want more after those, let me know.

NYC – Any Major Mix Vol. 1

1. Billie Holiday – Autumn In New York (1954)
NYC hook: When Harry repeatedly met Sally, his creepiness was relieved by the beauty of NYC’s fallen, brown leaves. I’m not sure that match-making via Harry Connick is what Billie had in mind. It’s beautiful nonetheless. No wonder the creep eventually managed to hook the rather attractive Sally, playing lovely music like this for, to and at her.

2. Ray Charles – New York’s My Home (1961)
NYC hook: Well, it’s his favourite city, not just a visiting place. It’s, as the title shrewdly implies, his home.

3. Bobby Darin – Sunday In New York (1964)
NYC hook: Ah, those innocent days when shops would be closed on Sundays, and there’d be nothing better to do than window shopping — and sing infectiously upbeat songs about it.

4. Ad Libs – Boy From NY City (1964)
NYC hook: Well, there’s a boy, and he’s from New York City, and a girl named Kitty, for reason of rhyme, is urged to tell us about him. We learn that he is no clown, which is a relief.

5. Harpers Bizarre – 59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy) (1967)
NYC hook: Slowly following the S&G city map, Harpers Bizarre are finding cause to feel pretty good — or groovy, in the era’s vernacular. As the title might have told you. What else can make you feel groovy?

6. Gerard Kenny – New York, New York (1978)
NYC hook: It’s safe to say that Gerard Kenny likes New York. In his enthusiasm, he claims inaccurately that on account of how good the city is, it was named twice, like the father of English footballing brothers Gary and Phil Neville. Of course we know that his Sesame Street level assertion does not correspond with reality, yet we would feel guilty disabusing him of his error. It would crush him, no doubt.

7. Russ Ballard – New York Groove (1975)
NYC hook: A little under a decade after people were feeling gently groovy, Russ thumped us with the NY GROOOVE, symbolising the transition from weed to coke. Ex-Argent member Ballard wrote the song, but didn’t release it. Instead, Hello in 1975 and Ace Fehley of Kiss in 1978 had hits with it.

8. Nicole Atkins – Brooklyn’s On Fire (2007)
NYC hook: It’s Independence Day and, Nicole counsels us, Brooklyn is on fire. Not literally, even though the chorus fdoes sound deceptively alarming. It’s the fireworks, and romance is in the air. Fantastic song.

9. Ramones – Rockaway Beach (1977)
NYC hook: Joey and his “brothers” go to the Beach. The Surfin’ USA for New Yorkers.

10. Bruce Springsteen – Sherry Darling (1980)
NYC hook: New York traffic is a bastard, and more so when you have to ferry around your nagging future mother-in-law. Broooce likes Sherry, but one more word out of Mom, and she walks.

11. Ryan Adams – New York New York (2001)
NYC hook: Ryan loves New York a lot, and this is his declaration of love. The video for this song was filmed four days before 9/11, and apparently the song played on loop for days after the attack. Apologies to New Yorkers in whom this track evokes horrible memories.

12. Elliot Smith – Amity (1998)
NYC hook: This mix is like a soap opera. Remember Kitty who told us about the by from New York City? Well, it seems the Boy from New York City has returned to New York City, with Kitty. “Hello, hello Kitty, happy in New York City.”

13. Bright Eyes – Old Soul Song (For The New World Order) (2005)
NYC hook: The only song in this mix not to mention New York, its geography or landmarks. But it is set in New York, describing the big February 2003 demonstration against George W Bush’s illicit, indefensible declaration of war against a state that posed no threat to his country’s security. As we knew then, if we were ready to refuse to believe the brazen lies peddled by Dick, Don and Dubya, and their gurning poodle in Britain.

14. Rosie Thomas – Much Farther To Go (2007)
NYC hook: A broken heart in New York City, with the Statue of Liberty as a prop. Without wishing to engage in undue hyperbole, this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

15. Rufus Wainwright – Chelsea Hotel No 2 (2006)
NYC hook: Casual celebrity oral sex; it’s the New York way. The cover is even better than Laughing Len’s original.

16. Everything But The Girl – The Only Living Boy In New York (1997)
NYC hook: One person leaves New York, the other stays behind. The second Simon & Garfunkel cover in the mix, and I have two of their songs lined up…

17. Mondo Kané feat. Georgie Fame – New York Afternoon (1986)
NYC hook: We’ve had Billie Holiday in autumn and Rosie Thomas in winter; here Mondo Kané and Georgie Fame (produced by soon-to-be-evil-but-still-excellent Stock Aitken Waterman) enjoy a nice summer afternoon in various New York landmarks.

18. Prefab Sprout – Hey Manhattan! (1988)
NYC hook: And coming in on the flight after Mondo Kané’s are wide-eyed tourists Prefab Sprout, admitting to being entirely star-struck. Brooklyn Bridge, 5th Avenue (where Sinatra walked), JFK hang-out The Carlyle… But look out for the denouement as our tourist friends become aware of New York’s class division.

19. Neil Diamond – Brooklyn Roads (1968)
NYC hook: Neil grew up in Brooklyn. No dazzled observations about famous landmarks and celebrities here. Reminiscing on his childhood, Neil is smelling cooking in the hallways of his block; I get the scent of Mrs Diamond’s boiled cabbage. Wistfully, he imagines a new generation of children living in his old room, perhaps dreaming, as he did, of busting loose.

20. Gil Scott-Heron – New York City (1976)
NYC hook: You’d think angry Gil would hate New York. But he doesn’t. He loves it. Not quite sure why. Nothing much wrong with it, he says. And that’s Just as well, seeing as the city reminds Gil of himself.

21. Steely Dan – Brooklyn (1972)
NYC hook: The charmer under me is…the guy who lived below Fagen and Becker in Brooklyn. All there is to it.

22. Lou Reed – Dirty Blvd. (1989)
NYC hook: Face it, Lou Reed could sing ice cream commercials on a gondola or pack a surf board on a beach surrounded by gaggle of busty blondes, and whatever he was singing would still be about the grime of New York City’s underbelly. The Venetian gondolier would be a pimp, the surfer a pusher and the busty blondes junkie hookers. It’s what our man Lou does.

23. Bob Dylan – Hard Times In New York Town (1961)
NYC hook: Young Bobby Zimmerman escaped from cold Minnesota to Greenwich Village and joined the folk circuit. Recorded before he released his (not terribly good) debut album, we can sympathise here with the complications he is facing in his adopted home.

24. Bob James – Angela (Theme from Taxi) (1978)
NYC hook: What would a series of songs about New York be without reference to the yellow cabs. Taxi was, of course, the show about, well, taxis which brought together Danny DeVito, Tony Danza, Carol Kane, Randall Carver, Judd Hirsch, Marilu Henner, Christopher Lloyd and Andy Kaufman.

In other news, Let’s Change The World With Music is at no. 15 in the Irish iTunes store and only 41 in the UK. What’s does it all mean?

Schizo as me:  Eben noch erfreue ich mich der musikalischen Lakonik von The XX, schon springe ich einfach mal in den hymnischen Überfluss des jüngsten Werkes von Mr Prefab Sprout Paddy McAloon. Wer seinen Blog Food of Love übertitelt, kommt an einem Album, das sich rund um das Wunder Musik dreht (Let’s Change The World With Music), ohnehin nicht vorbei.

Prefab Sprout spalten. Die Einen finden ihre Songs zu abgezirkelt, zu durchdacht in Text und Komposition. Die Anderen sehe in vielen Songs und Alben von Prefab Sprout die hohe Kunst des perfekten, einfach makellos schönen Popsongs. Again, schizo as me, kann ich beide Parteien verstehen. Das trifft auch auf Let’s Change The World With Music zu. Paddy McAloon hat wieder einmal richtige tolle Melodien aus dem Ärmel geschüttelt, die hier und da auch die dicksten Wolken vertreiben, das Herz aufgehen lassen. Aber die Arrangements sind mir häufig zu kitschig, zu viel. Wie aber im Fall von Let’s Change The World With Music ein guter Freund und echter Prefab Sprout-Kenner richtig bemerkte: Das Album ist nie mit viel Geld produziert worden, Drumcomputer müssen echte Schlagzeuger ersetzen, Synthiesstreicher das Orchester. Gut möglich, dass der leicht künstliche Touch eben dieser Tatsache geschuldet ist.

So oder so sind auf Let’s Music Change The World wieder einige Songs enthalten, die sich lohnen. Mein derzeitiger absoluter Liebling ist Music Is A Princess. Groß. Wer sich wundert, dass Mr. Aloon immer noch den Schmelz der 90iger in seiner Stimme hat: Die Vocals stammen meines Wissens aus den frühen 90igern.

But then again: Ach, die alten Sachen waren schon doll. Life’s not complete till your heart’s missed a beat-Johnny Johnny ist einfach riesig.

Mein all time favourite: Lions In My Own Garden, extrem tolle Text-Musik-Kombi.

Wem die Songs zu dicke arrangiert sind, dem sei die myspace-Seite von Prefab Sprout empfohlen. Die Acoustic Version von Appetite ist wunderbar und zeigt, dass Mr. McAloon zu Recht als einer der besten Macher von Popsongs gilt.

After Nouvelle Vague did their gimmicky samba schtick to Love Will Tear Us Apart, it took these Norwegians to restore the song’s profound bleakness [YouTube]. That cover joined many other supersad covers on Melody Mountain (their version of Kiss’ Crazy Crazy Nights has to heard to be believed). And now they are back with 3, an album of (mostly) originals. And it’s surperb. Susanna’s spectral, but strong, voice is surrounded by sparse, moody electronics. It may be beautiful, but this is not dinner party music.

Medevac: Siobhan Donaghy

“At this point in time I have no further plans to undertake another record of my own. Ultimately, the true nature of the business side of the music industry is enough to keep me away. Nonetheless, if I find myself in the future bursting with ideas and experiences I feel the need to share through music, I will be back,” Donaghy stated in an interview with We7 in January 2009. What a shame. Back in 2001, when she left Sugababes, would anyone really have expected a popstrel like here to eventually release a lush piece of grown up pop like this.

Sweet Gospel Music: Prefab Sprout

I’ve been utterly spoiled this year with releases from my favourite acts. The Pets, Mew, Empire Of The Sun… Probably no chance that the Blue Nile or Scritti will crank one out before Christmas, but rivalling both of those in the not-exactly-prolific stakes is Paddy McAloon. He says he’s constantly writing but isn’t much cop at the releasing part. How nice for him, the artiste, but we want to hear these amazing-sounding things you’re doing, damn you! Get a PayPal account and shove them online yourself, man!

Anyway, he’s a genius and he has revisted tracks he demoed in 1992 (!) but then got distracted and put them aside. He’s got someone in to tart them up a bit and are they not glorious. The album is a triumph.

I felt a bit conflicted about sharing an mp3 of the Sprouts. I would hate to think that I would detract from their income, but, you know what, anyone who loves the Sprouts already has this album. I’ve bought it twice (couldn’t wait for the CD I had pre-ordered so I downloaded it from iTunes!). This is mostly aimed at people who don’t know Prefab Sprout, or think that they were just novelty hitmakers (The King of Rock N Roll, UK No 7, 1988 [YouTube]). Listen to this and you’ll get a flavour of the sheer richness of lyric, voice, melody. Get the 38 Carat Collection which has all the ‘hits’ and important tracks and is dirt cheap. Go get now.

Paddy McAloon (Telegraph)

Prefab Sprout were one of my favourite 8Os bands – I loved Paddy McAloon’s voice and vocals. I even used a line from one of their songs, “pulling rabbits out of hats, when I’d much rather wear them” in the Leaving Cert Honours English paper! I may even owe the only “A” I got -(there were no A1s in those days, dating myself here!) in the Leaving Cert to Paddy McAloon. I don’t know did I understand that line about the rabbits, but it popped into my head and off I raced with the rabbit metaphor to write my essay.

Now I don’t remember Paddy being particularly handsome, not in the Spandau, Durans kind of way, but what a shock to see a picture of him in a newspaper today, with long, grey hair and a wild white beard.  Of course this doesn’t take away from the great man at all – just shock at the ageing process! I still feel like that 17 year old girl sitting her Leaving Cert, quoting Prefab Sprout, with her life before her – an unmapped adventure. The years since have been a mixture of  joys and sorrows, the story of Paddy McAloon too, as I read today’s interview.

These days the 52 year old McAloon lives a quiet reclusive life with his wife and three daughters. He disbanded the band in 2001 (after 17 years, and 8 albums) and has released only one album since, the instrumental and spoken word piece, ’I Trawl The Megahertz’ in 2003. But it turns out he never stopped making music, he just stopped letting anybody hear it.

Prefab Sprout are about to release their first album in 8 years, ’Let’s Change The World With Music’ (on Kitchenware, out next week). Only its not a reunion. And its not even new. It is one of McAloon’s lost works, recorded in 1992, when Prefab Sprout were still firing on all cylinders, their glistening, emotional pop revered by critics and music lovers alike. And it is an extraordinary album, a rich, glorious, melodic, poetic, wry and romantic pop hymn to the power of music. Although recorded as demos over the course of a year by the perfectionist McAloon completely on his own, it has everything you could want from a Prefab Sprout album, marrying the aesthetic of arty, left-field singer-songwriting with the super polish of pop and jazz. But it was shelved after an A&R meeting when doubts were expressed about whether the world was ready for a concept album with references to God.

What seems utterly ridiculous from the remove of two decades is that the album is actually so sleek, smart and beautifully distilled, you wonder how anyone could have doubted its worth. It is not even, as he points out himself, particularly religious.

“There’s the vaguest of metaphors in there for the notion of a deity: if God was to speak, then music would be where you would find that voice. I’ve not nailed my mast to the flag of any particular denomination or point of view. I don’t know where I stand on belief. Whatever era we’re born, we think we have the definitive model of the way the universe is and our place in it. In the 19th century, they thought it was a mechanistic universe. The analogy now is a computer. And I just think it’s all wrong. Bob Dylan believes in God, and Richard Dawkins is never going to win an argument against Bob Dylan, cause you need a poet to discuss these things. So let’s just say I’m with Bob.”

It might be surprising that McAloon would express any sort of faith, because he seems to have suffered the trials of Job in recent years. McAloon had several eye operations to counteract a progressive degenerative disorder of the retina. He was recovering from this when he had what he describes as his “hearing disaster”. “It was six months of noises in my head, so loud I felt other people must be able to hear them. When it receded it left me with damaged hearing in my right ear. So I’m very reluctant to go anywhere where there’s loud music playing, I wouldn’t stand in front of a drum kit, but I can still plug things in and work on a low level.”

To talk to McAloon, he seems like one of the most reasonable, thoughtful and self aware people you could meet. “I have a good family life, I do the school pick up, I have friends. But I am reclusive in a lot of things. I don’t really care for the brave new world. You’re talking to a guy who doesn’t drive. I’m not on the internet. But I don’t think it’s as mad as it looks,” he says of his self-imposed artistic isolation. “If you decide to devote your life to something as an artistic endeavour, you’re doing it cause you think it’s worth doing. Its not some act of grandeur for myself, its more that I can get away with it, and concentrate on the exciting bit, the flowery bit. I feel like when I talk about it, I’m coming from a sensible place. But I know how it makes me sound. Maybe it’s the beard.”

The Elliots have put out a new track on MySpace for your listening pleasure. “Return” was recorded for “Bullet for Pretty Boy” but never made the album. Its an upbeat song with a nice groove to it, dealing with matters of the heart – love, deception and lies…

At the time we thought it didn’t fit in with the rest of the material. But inspired by Prefab Sprout’s recent release of their 16 year old album “Let’s change the world with music” we decided that now was the perfect time to let “Return” out into the world.
